Creative Shelf Styling Ideas Worth Trying Posted: 30 Mar 2022 02:20 PM PDT This post is from the blog, InMyOwnStyle.com When it comes to styling shelves for our home decor, many assume that the only decorative objects to use on shelves are books, vases, plants, family photos, artwork and small decorative accessories. These are standard shelf styling items, but I know of a few more that you may not have thought of. To help you make the most of your shelves and bookcases, I gathered some creative shelf inspiration or shelfie ideas that are not only easy to do, but will add color and personality to your decor. These details when decorating a home can make a big difference. They are not really needed, but can make something look so much better. This shelf styling tip is my favorite easy trick. Adding a decorative element on the outer edges of shelves can make a boring bookcase or shelving unit come to life. Using ribbon to do this is the easiest way, but consider how wood trim molding bought at the home improvement store would look across each shelf. Adding trim of any kind will take a plain bookcase up a few notches on the style scale. Narrow craft store ribbon attached to the shelves in a pantry closet using decorative nail head tacks. The shelf edges in this linen closet were gouged and rough. Something the builder of the house just painted over. To hide it without having to sand and repaint. I added white grosgrain ribbon the same width as the shelf edge and attached it with tacks. Doing this was not necessary, but every time I opened the closet, I smiled to see something pretty instead of ugly. For open storage shelf styling on a budget, use dollar store baskets or cover shoeboxes with decorative paper in the way of maps or leftover wallpaper from another project. I used purple ribbon and white thumbtacks to add a pop of fun color to the open shelves. If you are crafty you can make DIY trim from paper to decorate the front edge of open shelves in holiday or any style you want. If you like to be organized, you can add clear plastic label clips to the front edge of shelves. This can done on any shelf. They will help you easily find everything at a glance and will keep the shelves organized since you will know exactly where to place them. Decorate Open Shelving Using Backdrops Open shelves, cabinets and bookcases in a living room, bedroom or home office can become one of the most decorative elements in a room. Instead of focusing on what to place in open shelves or bookcases, think about how adding a colorful or patterned backdrop to the back of the shelves can make the items in front of it look even better. I make my shelf backdrops using corrugated cardboard or dollar store foam boards and choose what I wrap them with depending on the color scheme of the room. There is another nice aspect of adding a shelf backdrop when using the same wallpaper or wall paint color that a bookcase is on. It can make a closed back bookcase or shelf look like it has an open back. This can create a focal point and make the bookshelf or shelves look really nice when viewing the wall with the bookcase as a whole. I have even made shelf backdrops for a medicine cabinet in my previous home to add a pop of color and pattern. Having many items on your shelves that are all the same color makes the overall impression look less cluttered and more styled. Office Shelf Styling Ideas When it comes to office bookshelf decor, sometimes you may need the shelves to be purely functional to hold printer paper, files, etc without using any decorative accessories. If this is the case for you, then add color to the organizers you have. Plain cardboard file holders can be covered with gift wrap to add style. Shoeboxes can become decorative boxes in which to hold smaller items. Store printer papers in low sided rectangular baskets. Make the most of everything with square shapes by stacking them. Use the top shelf for the non-functional items where they will add to the overall look of the open shelves or bookcase, but not be in the way. As you can see, shelf styling doesn’t always have to be about adding decorative items to the shelves. Take a look around your home to see if any of the shelves or bookcases could use a little detail or infusion of color. Perhaps you have a few questions about what you should ask your real estate agent when you begin to look for lakefront homes? I have a list of items that you will want to know before purchasing. Have you ever dreamed of living on a lake? Does the idea of lake house living appeal to you? For my husband and I, the answer was an emphatic YES. We made the dream happen and bought our waterfront property as our primary residence in 2015. We did a lot of planning in advance when we set out to find a house on the shores of a large lake. We learned a lot along the way. We had never lived on a lake before and that led to some lessons learned. After looking at many lakes, we bought our lake home on the shores of Lake Murray in South Carolina. It is a large lake with approx. 600 miles of shoreline. It has both developed and rural residential areas. Many of these questions can only be answered by someone that lives on a lake or previously has as they will know the answers from experience. Knowing the answers to the following questions can make the difference between buying your dream home and envying your neighbors who made better decisions. You would be surprised by how many people move to another lake home a few years after they initially buy because they weren’t happy with their initial choice. What Type of Lake Home and Surroundings? When deciding to buy a lake home, have a very clear image of what you want in not only the house, but the community surrounding it. Create a list of items to check off. Starting with must-haves and progressing to less important features. Unobstructed Water View – Many lake homes are located on coves where the view out the windows or porch or deck to the water can be filled with the boats and docks of neighboring homes. It is nice to have your lake house living room have a wall of windows that look out to a beautiful view. Screened Porch for the Summer Months – Mosquitoes, midges, and mayflies are part of the lake living environment and can ruin time outside if you don’t have a screened-in outside space. Sunrise and Sunset – Note what direction the house is facing so you can determine if you will be able to see one or both every day. Also take note that west facing homes will be much hotter in the summer. Developed or Rural Community? Many lakes are in rural areas or off the beaten path. It is very important to consider how close you are to the things that matter most to you. Do you want to be close to shopping, entertainment venues, restaurants, airport and healthcare or away from it all? Are the roads paved to the house? If not, who maintains the road? Will there be a yearly cost for you to maintain it? Do good internet and cable providers have service to the rural area? If not, you may need to pay to have special tech installed in the home. Utility companies – drinking water – septic system? Is the water from a well or a city water system? Does It Matter Where You Live on the Lake? Yes, it matters where a lake house is located on a lake. On larger sections of a lake you will get a big water view, but also know that more boats will be going by fast and more frequently. It will be like living on a highway. Jet skiing is popular, but do you want to hear jet skis all the time? It may be better to look for an area with less motorized boat traffic. Noise travels over the water. I was once out kayaking with my husband and he was talking on his cell phone. I could hear almost every word from about a mile away. Kind of cool, but not cool if it’s a nearby restaurant with live music every weekend – not so great. Check out the neighbors’ boats. Unless you love the high speed “cigarette” boats, you might want to avoid properties close to neighbors with noisy boats. Are there lake resorts nearby? Resorts are wonderful for vacations. But do you really want to share “your lake” with all of the tourists staying at those resorts all summer? Are Trees Blocking the Water View? Perhaps you’ll find a neglected property where trees and bushes have been neglected and some trimming and strategic tree removal will open the water view. Depending on the local codes or what the lake management allows, you may be allowed to remove the trees. If not, you can remove some of the lower limbs (limbing up) on big trees to open the view. If you need to do this to create a perfect water view – there can be a significant cost to hire a tree trimming service, so keep this in mind. Tour the House Both During the Day and Night Just as with noise, lights on lake homes or nearby street lights can be seen from a long way off. You should visit the lake home you are considering during the day and at night. Every light you see on nearby homes on the lake at night are doubled in the water. This can make what seems like a serene setting during the day – very lit up at night when you may prefer less bright light so you can enjoy sitting outside at night. How Deep Is the Water in Front of the House? Another question that needs to asked is how much the lake level changes seasonally and how will this affect your boat and dock? What are the Lake Levels Through The Seasons? – Lakes are either natural or manmade. If it is a natural lake, the water level won’t change as much as a manmade lake that is managed by either an electric company or the Army Corps of Engineers. Generally – a lake that is managed by the Army Corps of Engineers will go through many different lake levels, some drastic all through the year versus an electrical power company that owns or manages the lake. If you’re on a lake with a dam, the power companies also manage the lake level to ensure a reliable power source, so this increases the consistency and reliability of the water level. The power company managed lake I live on drops the lake level 3 to 5 feet every winter, restoring the level in March. Every 5 to 7 years, the level is dropped significantly further (8 to 10 feet). This is done to manage lake weeds and improve water quality. If the level drops a lot in the winter, our floating dock and boat will sit in the mud. On some lakes, boat docks are on rollers and must be pulled in or out with chains or ropes to reach the water. This could be a long distance away from the shore as the level changes. This can be a lot of work. Is the house on a flood plain? Will you need to purchase flood insurance? Will you have to take your boat out over the winter months? If so, where will you store it? If the home is in a residential community, the homeowners association may not allow you to bring it on your property over the winter. Also remember that most lakes, especially the larger ones, are public lakes. Don’t be surprised to see fishermen in their boats very close to your dock and backyard. A little disconcerting, but normal when you realize that people who don’t live on the lake still want to enjoy it. What Shape is the Home’s Shoreline In? Some municipalities do not want you to mess with nature and do not allow shoreline weeds to be removed or to alter the shoreline in any way without permission. If you want to swim in the lake in front of the house, this could pose a problem. You should also think about installing riprap if it’s not already in place. Riprap is a border of rocks or other material which protects the home’s shoreline from wind and boat wakes that cause wave erosion. We lost approximately 5 feet of our shoreline to water erosion in the first several years after we bought our lake home. It was expensive to have riprap installed, but there has been no further loss of shoreline. What About Snakes and Other Wildlife? Lake environments bring snakes, as well as beavers, muskrats and wildlife you may not want to see. You can find snakes anywhere, not just lakes. But they seem more prevalent around a water body, especially lakes with warmer water. The vast majority aren’t poisonous, but they may make you squeamish. We started seeing snakes routinely after moving in. We finally realized that the bird feeder that the previous owner left was bringing snakes to our property. Birds are messy eaters that create a lot of bird seed droppings under the bird feeder. The seeds attracted rodents. And that attracted the snakes. As soon as we removed the bird feeders, the snakes disappeared. Another pest can be beavers – at night they eat the bark on trees close to the shore and can take small trees and shrubs to the ground. They use the branches to build their homes. We needed to install hardware cloth around every tree so they could not damage the trees and shrubs. It is common at night to see raccoons and other wildlife on our lakeside deck and property looking for food. Find Lake Community Groups Online Join Community Groups – Join a Facebook group for the lakes that most interest you. You will learn a lot about the lake and area lifestyle. These Facebook groups are sometimes restricted to residents, but you can often receive an exception if you’re planning to move there. Be wary though when you read people commenting in the group that it’s a terrible lake. That may be an honest opinion. But people may say it jokingly as they want to keep their lake paradise for themselves. Where to Find a Lake House Real Estate Agent? If you are thinking about starting your lake home search and need to find a real estate agent, the best option is to seek recommendations from people you may know that live in the area. The lake we chose wasn’t even on our “lakes to consider moving to list” when we started our lake home search. Good friends who knew we planned to relocate to a lake mentioned it. We had never heard of Lake Murray, SC before and in all the 7 lakes we looked at, it was the lake and community we liked best. We found our real estate agent through Lake Homes Realty that represents thousands of lakes, lake properties and local real estate agents for each lake. What are Unseen Costs When Buying a Lake Home? There are additional costs associated with living on a lake or any body of water. If you like to have fun in the water, water skiing or play water sports, you can spend $500 to $1000 on a kayak (or much more). How about a paddle board? Fishing gear? Canoe? Pontoon, speed or fishing boat? Final Considerations When Choosing Your Lake House We will never regret buying our dream lake house. It has been a great investment and we love lake life and living on the shores of a lake. Vegetable Fried Rice Posted: 30 Mar 2022 05:31 AM PDT Fried rice is a take-out classic because it’s fast, easy, filling, delicious, and inexpensive, which is everything I want from a meal made at home, too! I love making vegetable fried rice at home because it’s an easy way to use up odds and ends in my fridge, it’s always satisfying, and it’s FAST. Plus, I can always add some meat or seafood if I’m feeling it! Originally posted 6/2/2010, updated 3/30/2022. What is Fried Rice? Fried rice is a Chinese dish made with cooked rice that is then stir-fried in a wok with other ingredients, like meat, seafood, vegetables, and eggs, and then seasoned with a savory sauce. It’s extremely flexible and budget-friendly, which is why we love this dish! The recipe below is an American adaptation, using a skillet instead of a wok and ingredients that are easily sourced in most American grocery stores. If you’d like to try an authentic Chinese Fried Rice recipe, be sure to check out Chinese Fried Rice from Rasa Malaysia, Egg Fried Rice from Red House Spice, or Classic Chicken Fried Rice from The Woks of Life. Use Leftover Rice for Best Results To avoid clumpy or gummy fried rice, use rice that has been previously cooked and completely cooled, preferably overnight. The slightly drier, less starchy rice is perfect for stir-frying because it can absorb moisture from the sauce and vegetables without becoming overly sticky. If you don’t have leftover rice from the day before, simply cook some rice, spread it out thin on a baking sheet or wide baking dish for faster cooling, then refrigerate until completely cool before using in the stir fry.  Do I Need a Wok? Woks are wonderful for stir fry because the large surface area makes it possible to add a lot of ingredients without overcrowding. While using a frying pan doesn’t work quite as well, we can make up for the crowding issue by cooking the ingredients separately, then combining them at the very end.  What Else Can I Add to Vegetable Stir Fry? Here’s my favorite part. A simple Vegetable Stiry is a blank slate for all sorts of add ins, whether it’s more vegetables, a meat or seafood, a different sauce, or even a crunchy topping! Here are some other fun add-ins for your stir fry: Other vegetables like beansprouts, mushrooms, green beans, corn, broccoli, red chiles, or kimchi Meat or seafood like chicken, beef, shrimp, pork, or sausage Other sauces like oyster sauce, sriracha, or chili crisp Crunchy toppers like cashews, peanuts, sesame seeds, crushed ramen noodles Vegetable Fried Rice Vegetable Fried Rice is a fast, easy, delicious, and budget-friendly meal that you can whip up with ingredients on hand at any time! Course Dinner, Lunch Cuisine American, Chinese Total Cost $4.50 recipe / $1.13 serving Prep Time 15 minutes Cook Time 12 minutes Total Time 27 minutes Servings 4 about 1.25 cups each Calories 371kcal Author Beth - Budget Bytes Ingredients 2 cloves garlic, minced $0.16 1 tsp grated fresh ginger $0.10 1 carrot, diced $0.16 1 red bell pepper, diced $1.50 4 green onions, sliced $0.40 2 large eggs $0.46 1 cup frozen peas $0.50 3 Tbsp cooking oil, divided $0.12 3 cups cooked and cooled rice $0.62 3 Tbsp soy sauce $0.18 1 Tbsp toasted sesame oil $0.30 Instructions Prepare the vegetables before hand so they're ready to go when needed. Mince the garlic, grate the ginger, dice the carrot and bell pepper, slice the green onions (separate the green ends from the white ends), and measure the frozen peas. Lightly whisk the eggs in a small bowl. Heat a large skillet over medium. Once hot, add 2 Tbsp of cooking oil and swirl to coat the surface. Add the eggs and gently scramble until cooked through. Transfer the cooked eggs to a clean bowl or plate. There should be a good amount of oil left in the skillet. Turn the heat up to medium-high. Add the diced carrots and stir and cook for about two minutes. Next add the bell pepper and the white firm ends of the green onions. Cook and stir for one minute more. Finally, add the frozen peas and stir and cook until heated through. Transfer the vegetables to a clean bowl or plate. Add the remaining 1 Tbsp cooking oil to the skillet and swirl to coat the surface. Add the garlic, ginger, and cooked and cooled rice to the skillet. Stir and cook for about 2 minutes, or until the rice is heated through. Pour the soy sauce and toasted sesame oil over the rice. Stir the rice and sauce together until evenly combined. Turn the heat off. Add the eggs and vegetables back to the skillet with the rice and stir to combine. Allow the residual heat to heat everything through. Top with the remaining green ends of the sliced green onions. Taste and adjust the soy sauce or sesame oil to your liking. Nutrition Serving: 1.25cups | Calories: 371kcal | Carbohydrates: 44g | Protein: 10g | Fat: 17g | Sodium: 807mg | Fiber: 4g How to Make Fried Rice – Step By Step Photos Prep the vegetables before you begin cooking because once you start, it will go fast! Mince two cloves of garlic and mince or grate about 1 tsp fresh ginger. Peel and dice one large carrot and one red bell pepper. Slice four green onions, separating the tender green top half from the firm lower half, and measure out one cup of frozen peas. Lightly whisk two large eggs. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add 2 Tbsp cooking oil and swirl to coat the surface. Add the eggs to the skillet and gently scramble until cooked through. Remove the scrambled eggs to a clean bowl or plate. There should be quite a bit of oil left in the skillet after removing the eggs. Turn the heat up to medium-high. Add the diced carrot to the skillet and stir fry for about two minutes. Next, add the bell pepper and the firm white ends of the sliced green onion. Stir fry for about a minute more. Lastly, add the frozen peas and stir fry just until heated through. Remove the vegetables to a clean bowl or plate. Add another tablespoon of cooking oil to the skillet and swirl to coat the surface again. Add the minced garlic, ginger, and three cups of cooked and cooled rice to the hot skillet. Stir and cook for 1-2 minutes. Don’t worry if the rice sticks a bit to the bottom. It will loosen after the sauce is added. Add 3 Tbsp soy sauce and 1 Tbsp toasted sesame oil to the rice. Fold the rice and sauce together until the rice is evenly coated in the sauce. Add the vegetables and eggs back to the skillet. Turn the heat off and stir to combine, allowing the residual heat to reheat everything through. Top with the sliced green ends of the green onions and you’re done! Give it a taste and add extra soy sauce or sesame oil to fit your taste buds. What do you like to put in your fried rice? Diablo 4's art style promises a "return to darkness" Posted: 31 Mar 2022 02:21 PM PDT I remember when Diablo 3 was released. One of the (many) talking points around the game was its art style, and the perception that Blizzard had made the art style lighter and friendlier versus the gothic greys of the previous two games. The criticism seemed a little overblown and silly at the time, but here we are reading the latest quarterly update on the development of Diablo 4. It focuses on the new game's art, and the phrase "return to darkness" is used repeatedly. Read more

Alice Bee is away this week, adapting to life in a brand-new country, leaving Nate and Matthew to dwell on the merits of The Mandalorian, and whether a show following the life of a Halo grunt would be better than big flashy Master Chief quips. Matthew puts forward the idea of a Hitman TV show in the vein of Succession, focusing not on Agent 47, but the elite corporate villains he assassinates, as they deal with various cast members being offed in mysterious circumstances. The Fertile Crescent review (early access): a bite-sized chunk of phenomenal RTS design Posted: 31 Mar 2022 09:00 AM PDT I’m not going to bury the lede here: The Fertile Crescent is, to my delight, a proper little belter of a real-time strategy game. Having just hit early access, this Mesopotamian pomegranate-’em-up is certainly no epic, and you can see pretty much everything it can do within a couple of hours of play. Superfuse is making a violent play to be your next co-op Diablo-like Posted: 31 Mar 2022 07:00 AM PDT Diablo meets The Boys is the four-word elevator pitch of Stitch Heads and Raw Fury's new isometric hack and slasher - and judging from the amount of loot, blood and minced limbs I saw in my hands on demo last week, I'd say they're pretty bang on the money, albeit with an extra dash of Borderlands thanks to its cel-shaded comic book visuals. Whichever way you slice it, though, Superfuse makes a striking and violent first impression. Perhaps it's because I'm playing as its Berserker class, a large walking slab of man muscle whose axe and (comically large) fists can pulverise anything and everything standing in its way. Or maybe it's because the devs have given me free rein of the game's extensive skill tree, letting me pile in dozens of points into attacks, abilities and power-ups normally reserved for later on. Superfuse may be a loot-driven hack and slash with hundreds of different weapons and armour components to pick from, but its skill tree is equally vast, giving you as much flexibility in how your attacks play out onscreen as your various wardrobe choices - and some of its effects are deliciously gory. It’s a concise expression of everything the town’s been through: the rampaging bandits, the cannibal kidnappings, the swirling tornados. Filling the graveyard has been a solemn bid for order in the wake of so much chaos. It’s not that way in Bripton, the next town over. The graveyard there is uncannily empty, save for a similarly bare tree. But you can change that, should you so choose: shoot up the bank or fight a duel and, the next time you return to that settlement, new plots will have appeared for every life snuffed out. Weird West even suggests you head to the local cemetery to loot any bodies you’ve missed - though its reputational system implies you should ensure nobody’s watching first. Read more

Access to some payment systems has been lost following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, so the devs say if you can't figure out a way to buy it, hey, just download it. Nightmare Reaper is a retro-FPS roguelike that's bloody fun Posted: 31 Mar 2022 03:25 AM PDT Nightmare Reaper is rad, which is something I didn't think I'd say. DOOM and its DOOM-like spawn don't often do it for me. Bouncing around an arena and carving demons into hunks of meat gets a bit repetitive for my tastes. Which is weird! I love FPS games and repetitive things, like dying in Hades over and over again. I'm into Nightmare Reaper because it's repetitive... but not. It's a roguelike DOOM-inspired shooter where you blast through procedurally-generated levels and their demonic denizens, earn cash, put points into a skill-tree, and get as far as you can. The quest for loot has elevated this from a potential "Meh" to a solid, "Oh yeah". Read more
