More Nosferatu than Twilight: New ‘Salem’s Lot’ to Make Vampires Scary Again

The Stephen King vampire novel Salem’s Lot is slated to be remade (again) with Lewis Pullman in the lead. And the actor is eager to revive the fear of vampires. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, the actor previewed the goals for the upcoming Salem’s Lot adaptation. The most notable being returning them to their original state as the scary creatures they originally were instead of the dazzling sweethearts they had become with films like Twilight.

 

"It’s really exciting to bring vampires back. They’ve become a little bit sparkly and not so scary. When they originated, they were terrifying. I think Gary’s really keen on bringing that back, and I think [Salem’s Lot] is going to do it. I’ve been genuinely terrified on the set multiple times, so that’s a good sign. I think he did a great job."

 

In the remake of Salem’s Lot, which is directed by Gary Dauberman, Pullman plays Ben Mears, a writer who goes back to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration but finds that it is being terrorized by a vampire, forcing him to join forces with a motley crew to fight it. The book has been adapted numerous times, usually for television and in the form of miniseries, with David Soul and Rob Lowe playing Ben Mears in 1979 and 2004 respectively.

 

 

Tobe Hooper directed the iconic television adaptation of the novel in 1979. It aired as a miniseries, but its three-hour run time means it's also viewable as a straight movie. Salem's Lot was the first King novel to be adapted into a miniseries. Its success inspired many of his other works to be adapted into a miniseries.

 

Dauberman’s adaptation of the Stephen King novella will be a full film, a difficult job given the length of the book.

 

"Talk about scary for two reasons! Because it’s Stephen King, and the legacy is strong for a reason. And then also the material. Salem’s Lot is just one of the coolest books, and I think there’s a reason why it hasn’t been made into a feature. It’s been made into these two-part series, but it’s such a long book. It’s hard to condense that into a feature length film, but [writer-director] Gary Dauberman has really tapped into the vein of this genre. It feels like he has liberty to play with it a little bit and reinvent it."

 

'Salem's Lot (1975) is the second novel published by Stephen King, after Carrie and before The Shining. Throughout the 80s, King maintained it was his favorite story he had ever written. The plot follows a writer named Ben Mears, who grew up in a small town in Maine called Jerusalem's Lot, or 'Salem's Lot for short. Mears returns to Salem's Lot after 25 years away to write his next book about the malevolent Marsten House, only to find that the house has been purchased by a vampire who is quickly taking over the town.

Get Ready: Marvel Comics Introduces Gay Spider-Man!!

He won’t make it for Pride Month (wait — is it really “he”? Do I have the correct pronoun?), but coming this September is Marvel’s latest attempt at woke pandering, Web-Weaver — a “not-so-mild mannered Van Dyne fashion designer [who] after getting spider powers, shows everyone a very different kind of Spider-Slayer,” according to ScreenRant.

 

Web-Weaver will debut in Edge of Spider-Verse #5.

 

“Since the Spider-Verse’s introduction during Dan Slott’s epic run [chee-yeah, RIGHT!!!] on Amazing Spider-Man, the community of Marvel’s multiversal spider variants has grown more diverse across lines of race, ethnicity, ability, age, and gender,” writes ScreenRant’s Jonathan Jones. “It’s long past time that the LGBTQ+ community gets to be represented there more and more. That’s what makes the news about Web-Weaver’s debut so exciting.”

 

Writer Steve Foxe announced on Twitter he had “the huge gay honor” of co-creating Web-Weaver with Kris Anka. Both Foxe and Anka are members of the LGBTQ community.

“Something I realized immediately when conceiving Web-Weaver is that he can’t — and shouldn’t — represent ALL gay men,” Foxe continued. “No single character can. His fearlessly femme identity is central to who he is, but it’s not the STORY…which you can experience for yourself in September!”

 

Anka said that “from the jump, I looked at a lot of [designers] McQueen and Mugler for this as inspiration. I cast a wide net for the original designs while also looking at new and unique spiders that [Foxe] has recommended, which eventually paired down to this look.”

 

Kraven the Hunter in the background of the cover is now called Hunter-Spider, by the way. 

 

CBR reports Dan Slott, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller co-wrote the issue, along with art by Bob McLeod. Edge of Spider-Verse is a five-issue series by Slott, Mark Bagley and others which also features alternate universe Spider-characters Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Mobile.

‘Wednesday’ Producer Teases a ‘New Interpretation’ of The Addams Family

Tim Burton’s “Wednesday” series will debut on Netflix later this year, and executive producer Gail Berman has teased a little bit of what to expect. According to Berman, Wednesday is a more “contemporary” interpretation of The Addams Family than any of the previous adaptations that viewers have seen. The producer also mentions how, as a lifelong fan of The Addams Family, working on the show is essentially a dream come true.

 

“All the props go to [creators] Al Gough and Miles Millar. It's their baby with Tim Burton. It's a modern telling of the story, it's a clever new interpretation. You haven't seen this before. I love The Addams Family, I always thought it was an amazing, underutilized brand. I met with Kevin Mizracki a long, long time ago. The rights had become available and we took a leap. I had a deal at the time with MGM for television, and they got on board right away for an animated feature. It's been a wonderful partnership, and Wednesday was an outgrow from that.”

 

Wednesday recasts the titular character as being a few years older than how she is usually depicted.  Jenna Ortega plays the lead and the premise is centered on Wednesday at school and her interactions with professors and classmates, the other family members will be there but will serve more as background characters. 

 

 

Her parents, Morticia Addams and Gomez Addams, will be portrayed by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman, respectively. Emma Myers, Moosa Mostafa, Naomi J. Ogawa, Joy Sunday, and Victor Dorobantu are all featured in the series, along with Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Georgie Farmer, Percy Hynes White, and Emma McShane. Wednesday also features Christina Ricci, who portrayed Wednesday Addams in the first live-action movie and its sequel Addams Family Values, in a supporting role.

After Roe v Wade will Disney Start Playing Politics in Georgia Again?

The state of Georgia, and notably Atlanta, has promoted itself for more than ten years as the best location in the world for Hollywood to generate money. The incentives offered there have been very well-received by the film industry, and the studio facilities there are excellent for what most high-end production studios require.

 

Hollywood has been inundating the state with new residents, which has been starting to sway it towards more coastal values was something the conservatives who created the film pitch may not have anticipated, though. The southeastern state and the film crews who live there are under further stress as a result of today’s Supreme Court of the United States decision. Many immigrants from California and New York don’t have the same goals for Georgia that the state’s residents do.

 

Numerous Marvel films as well as others are produced in Georgia. Because of this, the Peach State is gearing up for a potential political conflict later this year as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision on abortion. Georgian conservatives certainly don’t intend to give it up the Peach State, and Hollywood can’t readily leave the state either.

 

 

While Disney waded into the abortion laws in Georgia back in 2019, their recent political battle in Florida proved unsuccessful. However, entertainment businesses were successful in North Carolina when it came to the subject of transgender restrooms. Will major movie studios encourage Georgia to change its present law to allow abortions after six weeks? Or will they recall Disney’s Florida loss in the culture war and decide to back off? Let’s hope they will get back to politically neutral entertainment.
