| Hamilton’s Renée Elise Goldsberry Is Going To Be In She-Hulk, And We’re Satisfied Posted: 12 Apr 2021 10:03 AM PDT It's always exciting to see who Marvel has cast for any of its many upcoming projects. At best, fans get to see a new face for an old beloved character, and at worst we get something to talk about. Some recent casting news is finally getting the crossover market that comprises Marvel fans and fans of Broadway musicals: Renée Elise Goldsberry will be in She-Hulk. Renée Elise Goldsberry’s Work Before She-HulkRenée Elise Goldsberry may be best known for her role as Angelica Schuyler in Lin Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. Goldsberry's performance as Angelica stole every scene she was in, whether with her presence on the stage, her voice, or her unmatched delivery. In a show with a largely male cast, Goldsberry stands out for more than just being one fourth of the named female characters. If you haven't seen Hamilton, give the filmed original cast performance a watch on Disney+. If nothing else, you will see the energy that Goldsberry can bring to She-Hulk. After her work on stage, it's exciting to see Goldsberry return to television, though she has appeared in several other series, including Altered Carbon, The Good Wife, and a few episodes of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. ![]() Image via Disney+ What it Means For The SeriesLooking at She-Hulk as a series and as a character, it seems like the perfect fit to have talent like Goldsberry around. Right now, we have limited information on the cast list for She-Hulk. There is Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk herself. Mark Ruffalo will reprise his role as Bruce Banner. And Tim Roth once again play as Emil Blonsky, the Abomination. While it's unclear what her role will be, we can be sure Renée Elise Goldsberry will be another strong female character in a series that should be defined by them. Though a lot is still up in the air for She-Hulk, what we're hoping to see is a series that captures the best of the character: a woman who is intelligent, powerful, and not defined by her relationship and submission to men. Frankly, it would be odd for She-Hulk not to be the strong female character 2022 will need. She graduated at the top of her class and is functionally immortal. That's the energy we need now, and bringing Renée Elise Goldsberry in on She-Hulk is an exciting step in the right direction. She-Hulk is currently in production and will debut on Disney+ in 2022Featured image via Marvel Comics Hamilton’s Renée Elise Goldsberry Is Going To Be In She-Hulk, And We’re Satisfied |
| Outriders Content Patch Deletes Saves For Some Players Posted: 12 Apr 2021 07:03 AM PDT There’s a huge risk to having a game rely heavily on an online connection. If the players can only play the game with stable internet, then some might be left out. A whole other issue that can occur is the ever-present technical issue that might shut a game down for a short while. Yeah, it’s frustrating, but the assumption is that the game will go live again shortly. Well, in the case of some players who invested time into Square Enix’ Outriders, the game might be back but their save files are not. Players across different platforms are reporting that an Outriders content patch deletes saves, and in turn, possibly dozens of hours of progress in the game. Here’s what you need to know about this potential bug that might affect your characters. How to Avoid an Outriders Content Patch that Deletes Saves and Progress![]() Image Credit: Square Enix Per Eurogamer, numerous Outriders players took to Reddit this weekend to talk about the game. In a new patch that went live for PS4, PS5, and PC, players are jumping back into the game to find their characters missing. It’s annoying to lose a save in general, but this is particularly frustrating for a game that functions solely online and relies heavily on loot-shooting your way to better gear and abilities. If you lose that progress, then it’s incredibly deflating to have to start from the beginning again. While early talk, including our Outriders review for Xbox, was positive, this is another bump in the road for People Can Fly and Square Enix. The game’s online-only model is already showing signs of trouble for players. Server crashes and now save file losses, are making it increasingly difficult to enjoy an otherwise good game. Here’s the thing that something like an Outriders content patch that deletes saves does to a game’s credibility. If you lose your save, then yeah, that’s awful. The real issue here is that some might be unwilling to try the game now. Games like Outriders measure success by their online player base. If that starts to go, then you find yourself in a situation akin to another Square Enix release. Marvel's Avengers player decline causes matchmaking issues, which in turn makes it hard to play the game. These problems aren’t new in gaming as more titles rely on internet-based game ecosystems. As someone who is enjoying their time with Outriders, I hope Square Enix and People Can Fly figure this one out. After the rough launch of Balan Wonderworld, this game could be a big win for the publisher. We’ll watch this story closely, so keep checking in with Comic Years for more updates. | Jeremy Renner Photo Hints At Ronin Flashbacks In Hawkeye Series Posted: 12 Apr 2021 04:04 AM PDT When fans finally saw Jeremy Renner don the Ronin costume in Avengers: Endgame, they loved it. In the film and the comics, the Ronin persona represented a dark part of Clint Barton's life. But in the MCU, his life was especially painful. Thanos snapped away his entire family. Ronin became an extension of his rage, guilt, and sorrow. Both The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision examine grief and trauma endured by their central characters. So, we should not be surprised by the inclusion of Ronin flashbacks in the upcoming Hawkeye series. Jeremey Renner Might Be Revealing We See Ronin Flashbacks in the Hawkeye Series…or Not![]() Image via screengrab Many MCU actors tend to reveal things too early, but Renner always plays it by the book. So, when he released a photo of himself in the Ronin costume, with the caption "Back When…", we know it's with the blessing of Marvel Studios. Now, here's the real question: Is this a throwback to Endgame's production, or something new. Because it's an Instagram story, it will disappear in less than 24 hours now. But an image and two words haven't stopped us from speculating before! More than likely, if this is indeed from the set of Hawkeye, we’ll see Ronin Flashbacks in the series. It would be in the form of a flashback. There are several reasons to flashback to Clint's blip era murder spree. He killed a lot of mobsters around the world, so all of their family members returned only to find out that their loved ones died in their absence? They're going to be pretty angry. But this might also suggest more about the deaf superhero Echo (also getting a Disney+ show). In the comics, Maya Lopez was the first Ronin,, and Clint took the mantle while on a mission with the Avengers to save her. ![]() (Image: New Avengers (2004) #11, Marvel Comics) However, in the show, if she's using the Ronin identity after Clint finally lets it go, that could make things very complicated. It’s also possible that some fallout from his time as Ronin will be what brings Clint Barton back into the hero game. But we're just going to have to wait to find out. Hawkeye is in production and will debut on Disney+, possibly in late 2021.Featured Image: Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios Jeremy Renner Photo Hints At Ronin Flashbacks In Hawkeye Series |
| Ancient Aliens Movie To Be Directed By Cobra Kai Creators Posted: 11 Apr 2021 05:20 PM PDT Everyone’s favorite extraterrestrial pseudo-documentary series is getting a movie! The Cobra Kai creators are writing a script for an Ancient Aliens movie thanks to a deal between Legendary (which controls the Ancient Aliens Movie rights) and Counterbalance Entertainment (the creators and showrunners of the aforementioned Netflix hit). Counterbalance's Josh Heald will direct the feature with the company's Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg producing, along with Luke Ryan writing the script and executive producing. So, What Is Ancient Aliens About Anyway?Ancient Aliens is a History Channel series that premiered in 2009. It’s filmed in a documentary style and “explores the controversial theory that extraterrestrials have visited Earth for millions of years.” Each episode looks at the accounts, controversies, and theories surrounding the age-old debate of whether extraterrestrial life has visited Earth. Throughout each show, experts (I say this with a grain of salt) talk about alien theories, offering their own insight and opinions. Some of the more questionable experts have included Reverend Barry Downing (he described angels as “ancient astronauts”) and creationists like Michael Cremo and Willie E. Dye. The show has been largely panned by archaeologists and historians as promoting and presenting pseudoarcheology, pseudoscience, and racism. Many argue that the show caters to the entertainment factor of aliens and conspiracy theories, but the fanbase doesn’t seem to mind. The series has been going strong for sixteen seasons and has even inspired its own convention: AlienCon, an event that is based around Ancient Astronaut Theorist discussions and has attracted around 50,000 visitors a year since 2016. Is This A Good Pairing? While this might seem like a strange combination, the pairing of the Cobra Kai team and Ancient Aliens could work. Given the popularity of Cobra Kai (it’s spawned reaction videos, memes, and lots of quotable lines), and the loyal fanbase of the History Channel series, it makes sense that Ryan, Heald, Hurtwitz, and Schlossberg were brought on to create more addictive content. In addition, having a popular series such as Ancient Aliens connected to Counterbalance Entertainment could continue to elevate the studio in the entertainment media world. The story itself will be a “two-handed, globe-spanning adventure featuring ancient sites and artifacts, confronting the theories and questions raised by the popular docuseries,” which sounds like it might be more of an adventure movie. Personally, I think this would be a better fit for a topic that involves aliens and conspiracy theories. Though in terms of real history, this film may be as accurate as Alien Affliction, a B horror movie from the early 2000s. What do you think about an Ancient Aliens movie being made? Do you think the Cobra Kai team is the right one for this project? Let us know in the comments! Featured image via History Ancient Aliens Movie To Be Directed By Cobra Kai Creators |
| Rare Superman Comic Sells For Record-Breaking Price Posted: 11 Apr 2021 01:19 PM PDT It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s a record-breaking price! A rare Superman comic (Action Comics #1 to be exact) sold for a record $3.25 million in a private sale, breaking the previous record of $3.2 million set in 2014. Vincent Zurzolo, COO of ComicConnect.com, brokered the sale and said that only about 100 copies of Action Comics #1 exist today. This most recent copy is one of the best-kept ones. The Origins Of Action Comics #1 AKA The Rarest Superman ComicAction Comics #1 was first launched on April 18, 1938, by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. While they may not have the name recognition of someone like Stan Lee, their contributions to superhero comics are immense. Siegel and Shuster met in Cleveland and bonded over their shared love of science fiction pulp magazines. Eventually, they came up with the idea of Superman and (unsuccessfully) pitched it to several publishers. It wasn’t until 1938 that DC Comics agreed to publish Superman’s adventures in their new comic book, Action Comics, which became the world’s introduction to Superman. This launched the Golden Age of Comics and led to a number of new characters that had superpowers and secret identities; the idea of the superhero was born! Many of these characters have interesting backstories which aren’t well known and can change without warning. The history of Batgirl that you know will depend largely on when you started following the character. Superman, however, is arguably one of the most recognizable comic book superheroes to this day, so it makes sense that the comic that first introduced him to the world sold for a record-breaking price.
I’m Ready To Sell Off My Rare Comics Too!Before you get excited and start thinking you can make millions of dollars off your comics, keep a few things in mind. There are only a few comic books that will fetch a lot of money, mainly due to how rare they are and their age. If you’re serious about selling, it’s best to get your comic books appraised by a professional. They can let you know what to expect in terms of value and realistic pricing. What superhero comic would you be willing to shell out millions for? Do you think this rare Superman comic was worth it? Let us know in the comments! | Why Was Evan Peters Cast In WandaVision? Because Of How Grief Works. Posted: 11 Apr 2021 09:06 AM PDT The internet exploded when Evan Peters appeared in WandaVision. Aside from his ongoing roles in FX’s American Horror Story, the actor is best known for his performances as Peter Maximoff/Quicksilver in the X-Men franchise. And, as fans of Marvel may know, this role was played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So why exactly did the actor pop up in an MCU property? Why was Evan Peters cast in WandaVision? A recent interview let us know that there are more reasons than we thought. The WandaVision finale aired earlier this year. Though, we’ll still warn you that this post contains spoilers for the entire season. Not caught up? Check out the Comic Years podcast to find out what you missed. Why Was Evan Peters Cast In WandaVision If Not To Just Confuse Us All?WandaVision follows Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. Scarlett Witch (portrayed by the always impressive Elizabeth Olsen), as she learns how to cope with trauma and grief following the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. She is a woman who has lost her entire family and the love of her life, as well as five years of her own life. Earlier events in Age of Ultron also took away her brother, Pietro Maximoff, who the titular villain killed. The Pietro and Quicksilver that the MCU all knows and loves used Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the actor. While he only played the character briefly, he still left an impact that fans would never forget. Meanwhile, in another not-so-distant franchise, the character continues to exist. Evan Peters has played Quicksilver/Peter Maximoff (close enough to Pietro, right?) in the X-Men franchise since Days of Future Past in 2014. One of the most important reasons for having different actors play the same character is due to studio interference. X-Men characters are a part of Marvel, sure, but Fox previously owned the rights to these characters, and not Disney, the company that owns Marvel. This all changed in 2017 when Disney announced an acquisition with 20th Century Fox, meaning that there is now room for merging franchises. ![]() Image via 20th Century Fox. Is The Answer To Why Was Evan Peters Cast in WandaVision Simply To Shake Things Up?The inclusion of Evan Peters in WandaVision could have had some serious implications. And the moment that we first saw the actor in the fifth episode of the show made us all start making predictions and assumptions that didn’t seem too farfetched at the time. Notably, the idea that Pietro was conveniently “recast” could mean two things: the X-Men were officially in the MCU and that Wanda may have opened the door to the multiverse. Fans of the show gravitated towards the second option. This is largely because, while Pietro and Peter share the same identity, they remain two different people with different lives. The Peter we know from the X-Men franchise is a goofy mutant born in the 50s. The MCU character is a Sokovian-born human born in the late 80s with a completely different personality. ![]() Image via Disney+. Why We’re Waiting For That MultiverseThere are too many powers that exist in the world of Marvel to fit all in one universe. The world that we know is more commonly known as Earth-616, the “Prime Universe.” But there are other incarnations of it, and there is far more to be explored. The multiverse’s existence says that there are parallel universes filled with their own heroes, villains, and everyday citizens. While their existence has been referenced in the MCU before, like in Spider-Man: Far From Home, nobody has visibly made the leap (yet). When a different-faced Pietro/Peter knocked on Wanda’s door, we assumed that her powers were strong enough to break down the walls of the multiverse. And we’re still not fully convinced that she didn’t. But we’ll leave the predictions for when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness comes out. Why Did They Bother Casting Him Then? Many of us were disappointed when it turned out that Evan Peters in WandaVision had zero relation to his role in X-Men. He wasn’t from the multiverse, and he certainly wasn’t Mephisto, another highly predicted character reveal. Nope, he was just a regular guy with a funny last name: Ralph Bohner. More like Ralph Boring. This revelation made a lot of us pretty upset. We spend days predicting, dreaming, and thinking we nailed the hints. But was the casting decision really all for nothing? Ultimately, WandaVision was not designed to be an action-packed tale of heroic discoveries. Instead, the series served as a platform for unpacking trauma and lots of it. It looks at the stages of grief and examines how sometimes we don’t need a big bad villain to understand how a character thrives or copes. ![]() Image via Disney+. Ralph Bohner Was There For Trauma-Related ReasonsA recent interview with the series creator, Jac Schaeffer, revealed a different purpose and answer to “Why was Evan Peters cast in WandaVision?” The reason only draws deeper upon topics of trauma and grief. To ensure that they nailed these weighty topics, they brought in plenty of consultants, including a grief counselor. Exploring these ideas with The Empire Film Podcast, Schaeffer explains that this grief counselor unpacked the way that many people dealing with grief remember the faces of those they have lost. This can include “the anxiety of not remembering the faces of your loved ones, misremembering, or actively misremembering things as a self-preservation tactic.” The casting of Evan Peters works for these reasons. After Peter’s arrival, Wanda is certain that something is off, even if she can’t put her finger on it. She knows that he is supposed to be his brother, but not everything is as she remembers. While it could be explained as her having anxiety over not remembering all of his face’s details, we think that it falls into the category of misremembering him as a self-preservation tactic. Wanda Maximoff starts by not wanting to remember any of the bad things that she lived through. In fact, she blows up at Monica just for mentioning Pietro. Her seeing her brother as somebody else helps with self-preserving the truth of what happens, allowing her to think of him as nothing but positive (and alive.) Schaeffer goes on to add that having Peters in the role also adds a “meta layer for the audience,” but we already know how that went over. Again, we were pretty darn surprised that it ended up just being for the shock. ![]() Image via Disney+. Evan Peters May Still ReturnIf Evan Peters does return to the MCU, we’re sure that it’ll be when the X-Men and the Avengers cross paths. If this happens, do we think that Wanda will remember his face? Or will it be mentioned in passing, like her pausing on the term “kick-ass,” pointing at how Peters also played a role in Marvel-adjacent comics adaptation Kick-Ass (read our retro review here!). So, why was Evan Peters cast in WandaVision? Not to open the multiverse or hide a later reveal. He was cast to make further commentary on how people cope with loss. Considering how deep the series got in handling sensitive topics, we think it’s a pretty neat addition. WandaVision is currently streaming on Disney+.Featured image via Disney+. | Batman The Long Halloween Part 1 Trailer Gets Us Hyped For Some Holidays Posted: 11 Apr 2021 05:00 AM PDT Imagine a killer that only works on holidays. What rules would they follow? All statutory holidays, or just the big ones, like Christmas and Halloween? Personally, I think their greatest odds would be to throw in some of the weird national days in there, too. Like, “World Party Day” (April 3rd), “National Barbershop Quartet Day” (April 11th), or, my personal favorite, “National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day” (April 12th). I guess we’ll find out the answer in one upcoming animated DC film. A new trailer for Batman The Long Halloween, Part 1 has arrived, and we’re already waiting in anticipation. Take a look at the trailer for Batman The Long Halloween, Part 1 below! The New Trailer for Batman The Long Halloween Looks Pretty ExcitingDeath and destruction in Gotham isn’t anything new. However, when a murder occurs on Halloween night, Batman knows that something needs to be done. Is this murder the work of the Falcone Crime Family, or is it something more? This question is answered slowly when more murders start to pop up on Thanksgiving and Christmas, (bat) signaling that something big is going on. The film is based on the thirteen-issue comic series Batman: The Long Halloween published from 1996 to 1997. The original comics were written by Jeph Loeb, with artwork by Tim Sale. Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) returns to the DC Universe in the role of Batman for the film. He is joined by Josh Duhamel (as Harvey Dent), Billy Burke (as James Gordon), Troy Baker (as Joker), and more. Notably, Naya Rivera will be voicing Catwoman/Selina Kyle. Rivera tragically passed away in 2020, and so this will be one of our last chances to hear her on screen. Part One of Batman The Long Halloween will release on June 22, 2021. If Batman thinks that Halloween starts on June 22nd, then we guess it will be a long one. At least it’s not as far away as the release date for The Batman, which continues to face pushbacks due to the coronavirus pandemic. | The Comic Years Podcast: Home Movie Or Theatrical Experience? Posted: 10 Apr 2021 05:03 PM PDT Movies have always been a theatrical experience. Or rather, they used to be. While TV movies had a taboo around them for being less than theatrical releases, that is not the case anymore. Big studio films are being made for and released on streaming platforms. From major studio blockbusters to award season fodder, more and more original movies are becoming home experiences than theatrical ones. So it's something we absolutely have to discuss on this episode of the Comic Years Podcast. Join Joshua M. Patton, Meghan Hale and myself, in this home vs. theatre podcast. Home Vs. Theatre Podcast Tries To Discuss Pros And Cons![]() The worst way to watch movies on TV! | Image via Dimension films. Some of us prefer to watch movies at home, while others love the theatrical experience. So we try to break down which side of the fence each of us falls on. While ComicYears.com Managing Editor Joshua M. Patton surprises us all with his choice, our movies & TV editor Meghan Hale is very passionate about hers. Both discuss their choices and why exactly one is more appealing over the other. I'm more on the side of the home viewing experience myself, but that is more dictated by the experience in the theatres, than the movies themselves. But we also do get into what kind of movies lend better to each experience. Some movies might be better viewed in a controlled environment. While others in a crowd can enhance the experience. The answers are just as surprising as well from each of our guests. Does The Theatrical Experience Come With More Pressure?Joshua also brings up the sentimental aspects of the theatrical experience, which creates way more memories than home viewing. But on top of the debate, we also discuss what the status quo is going to be once the pandemic improves. Given that a big reason for movies like Black Widow to be premiering on streaming and theatres, is the global pandemic that has been 2020 and 2021 so far. Joshua brings up now this is not the first time that one industry was at risk when it came to releasing content on a newer different medium. | Extreme Carnage Keeps The Marvel Comics Event Train Rolling Posted: 10 Apr 2021 01:10 PM PDT We're in the final weeks of King in Black. Right after, we go into Heroes Reborn. But immediately following that, we get The Hellfire Gala. And now we have another Marvel event just after the X-Men extravaganza: Extreme Carnage. That's right, less than one year after a symbiote event, we're getting another symbiote event. It’s too many events. I'm writing the word "event" too many times. However, in the event that we all feel overwhelmed by said events, we'll still try to cover as much of the Extreme Carnage event as possible. (Heads up: I'll fail) What is Marvel Doing with this Extreme Carnage Event? Something Kind of Interesting![]() The best Venom is back! Sorry, Eddie. (Image: Extreme Carnage Alpha #1, Marvel Comics) From Empyre to X of Swords to King in Black to Heroes Reborn to Hellfire Gala to Extreme Carnage, Marvel just keeps the event train rolling. However, if we look at how they constructed each event, we see Marvel playing with the mechanisms of events. Empyre and King in Black were very straightforward events. A main series with a lot of tie-ins. With X of Swords, we somewhat returned to the standard X-Men event format, where all the series told a single chapter at a time, but on a massive scale, ending with X of Swords Chapter 22: Destruction. We generally got 2-3 chapters per week for 2 months. With the next event, Heroes Reborn, Marvel is releasing the eight-issue series week to week. For an Avenger title, that's ambitious, especially with all the one-shots and various other mini-series tying in. And now, with Extreme Carnage, Marvel is, to paraphrase Doctor Moira MacTaggert in House of X/Powers of X, breaking all the rules of event comics. Actually, HoX/PoX also broke the rules while telling a story about breaking the rules. As Marvel describes:
The First Three One-Shots Sound Pretty Cool, Actually.![]() I love red/orange/yellow heads. (Image: Extreme Carnage: Scream #1, Marvel Comics) Marvel released a few details recently about some of the one-shots, starting with Extreme Carnage, continuing in Scream, and then to Phage. However, they also revealed that Flash Thompson's Agent Venom will return to the Marvel Universe, probably in a big way. In Extreme Carnage: Scream, we'll see:
Following Scream, we'll get a symbiote we haven't seen any of in quite some time. In Extreme Carnage: Phage, writer Steve Orlando and artist Gerardo Sandoval will "explore how Phage fits into [the world Carnage builds] has been a great moment. He’ll come out of our issue with a power and charisma even more terrifying than before – and trust me, he’ll live up to his name in the first five pages alone!” as Orlando said in the Marvel announcement. So, Will Marvel Really Let the Extreme Carnage Event Cap at Just Ten Issues?![]() Take out the spikes, veins, muscle-red body color, razor-sharp teeth, freaky eyes, and giant bone claws, and he's kind of hot. (Image: Extreme Carnage: Phage #1, Marvel Comics) One alpha, eight one-shots exploring the symbiotes featured on Leinil Francis Yu's wraparound variant, and probably one omega issue. If Marvel commits to ten issues of Extreme Carnage, that will be more impressive than a massive event. And if that's the case, maybe I won't fall behind in covering each week!
