Alexa Devices Now Work With Xbox Game Pass Downloads

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 09:44 AM PDT

There’s nothing like a new game you want to play hitting Xbox Game Pass. One gripe I have, however, is that the Game Pass page doesn’t always update when a game goes live. If you want to find the game, then you have to go through the search process. It’s much easier to just shout at your Xbox, plus it makes you feel like you have control over your technology and not vice versa. Well, the Kinect used to be amazing for this sort of thing. With that platform dead and gone, Microsoft opened its voice-controlled device compatibility up to one of the biggest names in the business. That’s right: you can now use your Amazon Alexa devices to start Xbox Game Pass downloads. There’s a ton more you can do with the device connected to your Xbox too. Let’s talk about your options.

Good News: Amazon Alexa Works with Xbox Game Pass Now

In the last console generation, Xbox pushed its console’s media capabilities heavily. Now, the company is rightfully all about the games, including its service Xbox Game Pass. The service is wonderful, but it’s going to get a lot better. You can now download an Alexa app for Xbox that sets you up for voice-integrated download commands from the service. Here’s how to do it.

Firstly, download the Alexa app for Xbox. Then, go ahead and tell Alexa you want to download a new game from Xbox Game Pass. Something like “Alexa, download Grand Theft Auto V on Xbox Game Pass” should do the trick. You won’t need to install a new skill for Alexa for this work if you already have your Xbox connected to your Amazon device. If you don’t, then all you’ll do is follow the prompts on the Alexa app via Xbox to install the skill. From there, you’re good to go! Now, when a new game releases to Game Pass, you can install it via voice command.

It’s a bummer to see that this was the direction Xbox was heading with Kinect but it never quite landed. That’s fine because with Alexa integration people can just use the devices they already have with their Xbox. Microsoft is the first gaming company to partner with Amazon on Alexa compatibility, but I’m sure it’ll end up coming to PS5 at some point. Nintendo Switch users, don’t hold your breath. You can’t even voice chat on the Switch without the mobile app. You’re probably not getting Alexa commands.

What Else Can Alexa Do on Xbox Via Voice Command?

With Alexa, you can do a lot more than download Xbox Game Pass games. You can turn the console on and off, as well as capture screenshots and clips. Control for your media and volume is also possible, as is the launch of games and apps. RIP Mixer, because as you can see that was supposed to be part of the Alexa feature. Unfortunately, Microsoft gave up on Mixer last summer. Still, that’s quite a bit of control you have over your Xbox via Alexa devices.

If you’re thinking that all this seems cool but unnecessary, you’re probably right. You can easily just control these things with your controller. The thing is, however, that once you try it, you’ll never want to go back. I obviously have multiple Xbox controllers and an Xbox media remote, but the voice command thing just makes the process all that much smoother. US users can test out Alexa control for Xbox Game Pass now. Other markets can expect to see the feature arrive sometime this year.

Podcasts. Love them or hate them; they have quickly gone from a trendy form of entertainment to an integral part of our listening experiences. From listening on your morning commute to making your own as a way of self-expression, podcasts are a part of our daily lives. So, it seems only natural that using the platform would be a good way to promote our favorite shows’ upcoming seasons. The Boys: The Official Podcast is coming soon, and it’ll be used as a way to get us excited for an upcoming season of the show.

For Podcast Fans, The Boys: The Official Podcast Is On Its Way

The Boys pleased fans of the superhero genre and the satire genre alike with its bold portrayal of vigilantes. Landing on Amazon Prime Video in 2019, the series features an impressive cast, a daring premise, and a promising future. Now that we’re months past the season two finale and waiting patiently for the third season, creators thought it was time for something new. And what better way to deliver than with a podcast?

This podcast will take place over eight episodes. Each episode will discuss what went into the creation of season two and will feature most of the main cast members and people on the production team. Notably, the behind-the-scenes duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will be featured, along with fellow executive producer Eric Kripke. The Boys: The Official Podcast will be hosted by Tim Kash.

Podcasts Are Our New Favorite Way to Learn

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about something rooted in DC Comics being pulled onto Spotify podcasts. Last summer, it was announced that DC characters would soon have their own podcasts, with the franchise utilizing the spoken word to help us dive into the experiences of heroes and villains that we already know and love. While this show will look more at the creation that goes into them, future DC Comics will be treated as in-universe releases.

Are you excited to hear about The Boys: The Official Podcast? If you’re always adding to your “must-listen” list, check out The Comic Years Podcast while you’re at it. We chat about everything from WandaVision episodes to debating whether we like watching movies more at home or at the cinema.

Top 10 Mobile Gaming Tips for Beginners

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 04:47 AM PDT

Mobile games are more popular than ever before. This is because they appeal to people of all ages and a range of lifestyles. You can play them at home, or on the go, and there's no need to invest in state-of-the-art equipment. The mobile gaming industry is showing consistent growth. Big names are releasing more complex mobile games and the genre is now widely respected in the gaming community. Advances in mobile technology have also made it possible to enjoy features you'd normally expect on the latest console or PC. Many mobile gamers now make the most of high-quality graphics and online role-playing in real-time. There are plenty of new releases all the time, and players are coming up with better techniques. If you're new to the mobile gaming culture, here are a few lesser-known tips to help you keep up.

Stick to your budget

Mobile Legends

How much you decide to spend on mobile games is up to you, but it's a good idea to keep an eye on it. Often games start as free but include add-ons, powerups, and cheat codes for an additional cost. These might seem cheap at the time but they can add up. Here is a report on the average annual consumer spending on mobile games to give you an idea. It doesn't necessarily need to be an expensive hobby even if you're a real pro. You're only using your smartphone after all. It's logical that it should work out cheaper than investing in a games console or updating your PC for gaming.

Play with friends and family

Video Game Industry Mobile

Mobile gaming is popular with a lot of people, and it's easy to see from the success of Call of Duty Mobile to even other more basic games. Why not make the experience more enjoyable by playing with your family and friends? Mobile gaming is predicted to become even more social. As well as playing with people you know, you can easily connect with people all around the world. More games are being introduced where the players have to work together such as the popular Among Us, for example. This is a multiplayer game of teamwork and betrayal, where there's an imposter in the mix as you prepare your spaceship for departure as a team. You have to discover and vote off the imposter, which involves plenty of interaction with the other players.

Find the right games for you

Try out a few games and get to know your own taste and style. Perhaps you prefer team games or multiplayer competitive formats. Research some of the most popular Mobile games and see which ones align with your interests and preferred gaming style. If you're not a fan of one game, move on. There's a great deal of choice out there so you can find something you enjoy. It also depends on whether you prefer to play at home, or on the go.

Look out for rewarded videos

Largest Maps in Video Games

A nuisance as well as a perk of mobile games is having to watch ads. Look out for rewarded ads, however, as this could benefit your game. Rewarded ads are a type of video ad and if you commit to watching the entire thing you receive an in-app reward in exchange. This could include help completing the level, extra lives, or virtual currency within the game. You have to choose to opt in in order to receive your reward. You then won't be able to skip the ad. Here is a complete guide to rewarded video ads.

Enjoy gaming as a spectator sport

Video Game Industry Featured

Mobile games are fun to play but they're also great to watch. According to a recent report 71% of millennial gamers watch gaming video content and it's becoming increasingly popular to do so. You could learn tips and techniques by watching the pros, and start to hone your own skills. There are also plenty of how-to and advice videos on mobile gaming. Many gamers enjoy the video content almost as much as playing. If you're new to the gaming community it's a great way to learn more and network with other players.

Charge your phone

video games

It might seem like stating the obvious but you need sufficient battery to play mobile games. Certain games will eat away at your battery and if your phone happens to die during, you may lose unsaved rewards. Keep your mobile charged if you’re playing mobile games. Letting your phone die wil also have a detrimental effect on battery life. Here are a few more tips on how to boost battery life. If your battery is running low it could also affect performance. The game might lag and the graphics quality could decrease. If you want to beat your personal best, it's better to play with a fully-charged phone.

Top up your data

You need a decent internet connection for playing games well and if you're playing on the go, you might want to top up your data. Here you can find out how much data you need for gaming. With mobile games now being as complex as their PC and console counterparts, you need speedy internet and unlimited data if you're going to play often. It's frustrating if your data runs out mid-game, or any time, so it's a good idea to keep on top of this. Most smartphone plans can be upgraded to include unlimited data without a huge increase to the price. If gaming is making you finish up your data, shop around for a new price plan. You can then rest assured you won't run out.

Enable developer options

If you'd like to enhance the gaming experience on your phone try enabling developer options. This will allow you to adjust and optimize certain settings. One of the options you can select, for example, is to force 4x MSAA which will improve the quality of graphics in your games. You can also choose to limit background apps for faster performance. This means you can make the most of your phone's resources. Here is a complete guide on how to enable developer options

Avoid your phone overheating

Fire.

Power pill gone rampant. | Image via Netflix.

Depending on the model you have, you might find your phone overheats after you've been playing for a long time. There are several ways you can keep your smartphone cool. Trimming the fat with apps is one way to free up some memory and stop your phone getting overloaded. Limiting background apps will help here as well and you could even switch off other features such as Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS, if you're using your data. You could even invest in a cooling phone case or a stand with a built-in fan. This way you can enjoy gaming for longer without your phone, or your hand, getting too hot.

Watch out for poor posture

Almost every gamer is guilty of this but it's important to avoid playing in a poor posture. After time this could cause health problems such as back and neck pain, eye strain, or fatigue. Try to be mindful of how you're sitting and maintain correct posture while gaming. You'll find you play better as well. You could even set up an ergonomic station for gaming. Invest in a supportive chair, position your tech correctly, and make sure you get sufficient lighting. This way you can prevent your new hobby from affecting your health. It's also important to take regular breaks. It's harder to improve your skills if you’re tired. Taking a time out will also help you become a better gamer.

Peter David X-Men Legends Story Brings Back His Classic Run This July

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 04:01 AM PDT

When Marvel announced X-Men: Legends, an anthology series that explores lost chapters of Mutant history, they promised that legendary creators would return too. And so far, they've held that promise. Out the gate, we got Fabian Nicieza returning to a lost chapter, clearing up mysteries about Adam X. Next, we're getting Walt and Louise Simonson – as in, "we created Apocalypse and Archangel" Simonsons. But after that power couple comes one of the most prolific X-Men writers after Chris Claremont. Peter David is writing an X-Men Legends Story!

What Will Peter David Explore In His X-Men: Legends Story?

Peter David X-Men Legends Story, X-Factor, Leah Williams, Strong Guy, Wolfsbane, Multiple Man, Havok, Polaris, Quicksilver, Marvel Comics, Dawn of X, Reign of X,

Well, if this isn't meta…(Image: X-Men: Legends #5, Marvel Comics)

This new missing piece of X-Men lore takes place between X-Factor (Vol 1) #75-76. As described in the announcement:

Mutants have taken hostages, and X-Factor is taking the blame! But before judgment is rendered for Polaris, Havok, Wolfsbane, Strong Guy, Quicksilver, and Multiple Man, Val Cooper and X-Factor will take the stand! But who's telling the truth, and what really went down at the Latverian Embassy? It all makes sense…from a certain point of view.

And when Peter David went to write his X-Men: Legends story, he fell right back in. "X-Factor are old friends of mine, and I was delighted when Marvel gave me the opportunity to revisit them," David says in the announcement. "I have to admit, I was a little concerned since so many years have passed. But the moment I started writing them it was like no time had gone by it all."

David hasn't written X-Factor since his 2014 All-New X-Factor run. And currently, X-Factor in the Dawn of X era has a great writer, Leah Williams, who has proven to be a worthy successor of the title.  The Hope Summers sanctioned investigation team led by Northstar both honors David's style while forging a new path.

That's why Peter David returning for an X-Men: Legends story is great. Actually, it's why the series is great. Everyone wants their favorite creators to return to their beloved comics. With X-Men Legends, we can have Leah Williams doing new and wonderful things with her X-Factor while Peter David explores his, well, legendary run in X-Men Legends. Have your comics and read them too.

Army Of The Dead Official Trailer Reveals A New Kind Of Zombie

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 05:27 PM PDT

I was already among the fans who will line up, metaphorically of course, for Zack Snyder's new zombie-heist film on Netflix. But now, the newest Army Of The Dead official trailer has me all kinds of excited for some very specific reasons. The new movie from the former Justice League director is his first Netflix movie. It's also the director's first original movie, not related to an existing franchise or comic book adaptation.

Zack Snyder And Zombies Go Hand In Hand

Army Of The Dead official trailer Saw.

As previously mentioned when the movie's teaser released, Snyder doing a Zombie movie is very exciting. It's a return to the genre that made him an acclaimed filmmaker. The remake of The Dawn Of The Dead is what put Snyder on everyone's map. This time around, he takes that same genre and does something very unique and very new with it. As this trailer shows, Army Of The Dead is definitely one of the year's most anticipated movies.

Snyder's style of filmmaking perfectly lends to the typical zombie movie tropes. The trailer shows us how there's a lot of atmospheric suspense here, along with thrills, and of course, badass action. The new trailer begins with a stylized character development moment featuring the lead, Dave Bautista's character. Seemingly a retired person of former badassery, he is called back into action with the allure of money. The following montage sees him getting ready with blueprints and weapons, while reuniting with friends and pitching them a, 'one last job', kind of deal.

How Army Of The Dead Official Trailer Shows A 'Normal' Snyder Movie

Army Of The Dead official trailer shoot.

Image via Netflix.

One of the more unexpected surprises of the new Army Of The Dead official trailer, is how normal it is. Now, obviously, there are zombies and other craziness happening, but what I mean is that it's a normal world, with normal characters facing an outrageous threat. Taking a look back at Snyder's filmography since Dawn Of The Dead, it's been mostly set in fictional worlds with extraordinary circumstances. Watchmen, Sucker Punch, 300, and the entire DC Extended Universe, have all been about mythical characters, fantastical worlds, and completely escapist stories with a massive scope.

And obviously, a zombie movie falls into similar territory. But, as the first half of this trailer proves, besides the zombie threat, these are everyday characters living in an everyday world, motivated by regular desires. There are no superheroes in this bunch, despite Bautista's superhero-like body. It's exciting to see a movie set in the real world by Snyder, where audiences can relate to the characters, without allegory or metaphor, but because of the characters themselves.

Army Of The Dead Official Trailer Features A New Kind Of Zombie

After introducing us to these everyday characters with quirks, the new trailer lays out the story. The character played by Hiroyuki Sanada looks like the typical rich underworld mobster, who offers Bautista's character a huge payout, for a heist. Bautista assembles his team, and they lay down the plan. It's very much a Snyder-take on Ocean’s Eleven. For now.

The heist is seemingly successful, but what awaits the crew on the other side is an army of Zombies. This shouldn't be an issue for what looks like an elite team of mercenaries with massive weapons and a variety of skill sets. However, these zombies are different. They're not the drooling, slow-moving masses of bullet fodder that we're used to seeing in media like The Walking Dead.

As the trailer points out, these are smarter, faster, and a lot more organized Zombies. The trailer has some awesome moments showing some zombies engaging in hand-to-hand combat with the main characters. Others in acrobatic flips and wire stunts. While others, it seems, look like straight-up leaders of the Zombies, commanding them and even showing emotion to one another it seems.

How The New Spin Makes Things Much More Interesting

Army Of The Dead official trailer casino.

Image via Netflix.

Most Zombie movies or shows focus on how the zombie threat is more just the sheer number of them, over than any actual damage they can do one on one. Get up close, and you're in trouble. But if you have a butt-load of automatic weapons and explosives at your disposal, then it's pretty simple to deal with. But with Army Of The Dead, if the zombies have unionized, essentially, and are smart enough to strategize, target, and are capable of complex thought, it's a different matter entirely.

Zack Snyder's Army Of The Dead definitely seems to add to the larger Zombie mythos with these changes. Snyder's first time in a Zombie world was with an adaptation of the genre veteran, George Romero. This time, however, it seems like he's putting his own spin on the genre. With an original story that looks intriguing and exciting. It also helps that the Snyder Cut of Justice League was just released on rival HBO Max, because all of his current, new projects are with Netflix. So, the many fans of the Snyderverse eager to support the director, Netflix has a surefire hit on their hands.

Awards season is upon us once more, with the announcement of the finalists for the 2021 Hugo Awards. This year’s list includes some of our favorite books, graphic novels, movies, and shows from 2020. The category for best novel at the Hugo Awards is always stacked, and this year is no exception. Notably this category follows the trend set by previous awards, with women authors dominating as finalists for the 2021 Hugo Awards. Queen of the Hugo’s – N.K. Don’t discount Nghi Vo however, her novella The Empress of Salt and Fortune got rave reviews in 2020.

The New Blue Nintendo Switch Lite Looks So Good

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 12:06 PM PDT

I’m a sucker for console variants. It’s why I have like four 3DS editions in my nightstand. Do I need them all? Absolutely not. Do I immediately see a pretty new color or design and think “I have to have it?” You’re damn right I do. That’s the feeling I’m left with this morning after a new console announcement from Nintendo. The new blue Nintendo Switch Lite might not be the Pro console fans want, but wow, it looks too good to shrug off. Here’s when you can expect the console to hit shelves.

A Look at the Blue Nintendo Switch Lite

blue Nintendo Switch Lite

Nintendo loves releasing special editions to their consoles. It’s sort of funny that there’s an announcement out now for a new Switch Lite given all the recent console rumors. If fans expected a console announcement from Nintendo, then it was likely for the Pro rumors. A few weeks ago, new Switch model specs leaked to the press hinting at an upcoming announcement. Instead, we get a Switch Lite variant. That’s maybe not what you’re looking for, but the console looks pretty sleek.

Keeping with the matte Switch Lite finish, the Blue console hints at nostalgia. It’s funny, because blue consoles from Nintendo in the past don’t actually look like this color. A few DS Lite, 3DS, and DSi XL models are “blue”, but look much brighter. In fact, this new blue Switch Lite looks a lot more like the “purple” GameCube. I’m not complaining; the purple GameCube is one of my favorite colors for a Nintendo console. That shade of “blue” dates back to the accent colors of SNES and even a run of the Nintendo 64.

The new blue Nintendo Switch Lite will launch on May 21. If you want a game to pick up that day, then you might consider Miitopia, launching the same day. Of course, you have a slew of other Nintendo Switch titles you could grab as well, including recent releases like Monster Hunter Rise and New Pokémon Snap.
