When is the Age of Empires 4 release date? With the latest Age of Empires game landing over a decade ago, anticipation for a new entry in the classic, empire-building RTS couldn't be higher if you placed it atop a saddled war elephant and marched it towards a Barbarian outpost. Someone at Microsoft must have heard the cumulative prayers of veteran empire-builders the world over, as Age of Empires 4 – not to mention remasters of all three of the original games – is officially on its way and it will return to the Medieval period of Age of Empires II. We have rounded up all the Age of Empires 4 news and information to present you with everything we know about it. Join us as we run through the scarce few details about Age of Empires 4 that do exist and ruminate on the civilisations and nations we could be guiding from humble hunter-gatherers to fully-fledged empires. We'll also muse over the studio working on it, and generally get overexcited about potential new features. |
| Age of Empires 2 DE is getting co-op and a new expansion this year Posted: 10 Apr 2021 11:13 AM PDT As exciting as all of the Age of Empires 4 news has been, there was plenty of love given to the definitive editions as well. Age of Empires II continues to be a behemoth of an RTS game, and is easily the most popular out of the series' legacy offerings. It's no wonder then that this year will see more new content coming to the beloved strategy game, as World's Edge announced two key updates for 2021. First up, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is getting a new expansion titled Dawn of the Dukes which focuses on eastern Europe. Details on the new expansion were slim, but there was mention of at least new campaigns, and possibly new civs to boot. This follows on from the Lords of the West expansion that was released at the start of the year. The new expansion is due to drop over the summer. Secondly, it was announced that co-op will be coming to the game (and series) for the first time. RELATED LINKS: Age of Empires 2: DE review, Best strategy games on PC, Best RTS games on PC |
| Age of Empires 3 DE will get a new civ next week, and a new expansion later this year Posted: 10 Apr 2021 11:08 AM PDT The Age of Empires fan preview event today blew the lid on Age of Empires 4 and gave us a first glimpse at what it's going to be like. You can read a summary of the key details if you're interested, but there were also new things announced for the Age of Empires series definitive editions as well. Age of Empires 2 DE is a getting new expansion and co-op, but Age of Empires 3 DE is also getting some love as soon as next week! This coming Tuesday, AOE3 will receive its first major update and DLC pack, which will introduce the United States into the game as a separate civilisation. They will get a new unique explorer unit as well as nine other units, home city, and a brand new 'age up' mechanic, among other things. For a limited time, you'll be able to unlock the United States civ for free by completing a new challenge, or you will be able to purchase it via Steam or the Windows Store. Later this year, the game will also be showcasing new African civilisations that will be introduced in a future expansion. | Age of Mythology has not been forgotten – “we’re not pretending it’s not there” Posted: 10 Apr 2021 09:29 AM PDT There were a lot of cool announcements to come out of the Age of Empires 'fan preview' event this past weekend. New expansions for both Age of Empires II & Age of Empires III Definitive Editions were talked about, and we got our first proper look at the upcoming RTS game Age of Empires 4 in action as well. But there were also some notable absences. One was the fact that nothing was announced for the first Age of Empires, but another was that - once again - we're not getting the Age of Mythology sequel and/or remaster we all deserve. Naturally, amid all the talk about Age of Empires 4, one of the first questions asked during a recent Q&A with World's Edge and Relic prior to the event was "Age of Mythology when?" Adam Isgreen, the franchise creative director at World's Edge, took the question in good humour and led the response: "I've said this before, and I will say it again, I have not forgotten about Age of Mythology," he said. |
| Age of Empires 4 – everything we learned from the recent RTS fan preview Posted: 10 Apr 2021 11:24 AM PDT Everyone's been eagerly awaiting news on Age of Empires 4 for a while now, and we've finally been treated to some juicy details and extended gameplay thanks to the Age of Empires fan preview event run by World's Edge today. The reveal broadcast covered a lot of different topics, and didn't just focus on Age of Empires 4 itself, but there was still plenty of information to glean from it. Sadly, a concrete release date wasn't on the cards - all we know for sure is that Age of Empires 4 is targeting a Fall 2021 release, but there were other bits and pieces to take away. In terms of civilisations, there will be eight at launch from Europe, Asia, and beyond, with a strong suggestion that more will be included post-launch, probably as DLC. We already know about the Mongols and the English. In addition, a Chinese civ has been confirmed, along with a civ called the Delhi Sultanate. The design of each civilisation will be fairly asymmetrical and diverse. For example, the English behave like a traditional AOE civilisation, where as the Mongols will have bespoke mechanics that make them very different to what's been done before. |
| This Skyrim mod remasters the children Posted: 10 Apr 2021 08:04 AM PDT Now that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim's been out a good long while, some of the RPG game can feel a little stale. A new Skyrim mod overhauls the children of the fantasy game, sprucing up the ones already there, and adding a couple dozen more besides. The Kids Are Alright Renewal updates the models for kids already scurrying around Tamriel, adjusting skin colour, hair, and more on the existing models. Boys and girls have more defining features, like added musculature for boys, and softer skin on girls, and a glitchy mouth mesh in some of the models has been fixed. Another 27 have been placed throughout the world, scripted to hang around places where youth are known to be. Many of the added children are for humanoid races, like Argonians and Dark Elves, to liven up their communities. Dedicated mod users might recognise some of this, as it used to exist in a previous, much more substantial mod. According to creator triptherift, a mix-up involving the original being accidentally taken down led to this replacement. The first version had become quite feature-heavy, and this time triptherift intends to keep it as streamlined as possible. You can read more on Nexus. | Final Fantasy 14 patch 5.5 will finally mark gathering areas on your map Posted: 10 Apr 2021 05:53 AM PDT The preliminary notes for Final Fantasy 14 patch 5.5 have been posted by Square Enix, and one change in particular should make the MMORPG game that much more pleasant overall. Gathering areas will now be specifically marked on your in-game map, removing the need for third party resources. The addition is listed in the items sections, where it's written that players can now see where a particular item can be found on any given area through the gathering log. "Selecting the location of a given item in the gathering log will display the map for that area," reads the text. "A circle indicating the general location where said item may be gathered will also be displayed." This comes as a relief to players of the fantasy game. Until now, the information available for items and resources only included the region or sector, forcing you to just start exploring when you arrived in the hopes of eventually finding what you need. Players often used wikis and other sites that were maintained by community members to learn more specific locations. Now it'll be all in-game, no more alt-tabbing to and fro for those gathering sessions. RELATED LINKS: FFXIV Shadowbringers review, FFXIV Gunbreaker job guide, FFXIV Dancer job guide |

| GTA 5 was the most watched Twitch game in March Posted: 10 Apr 2021 05:10 AM PDT Three things in life are guaranteed: death, taxes, and people still buying Grand Theft Auto 5. After jumping back into the Steam top seller's list recently, the open-world game was the number one game on Twitch for March 2021, the first time it's attained the honour. The achievement was logged by StreamElements, a toolkit and support network for streamers. According to its data, Grand Theft Auto 5 logged the most hours watched on Twitch during March of this year, viewers tuning in for a combined 181,000,000 hours. This is nearly 40,000,000 above the next entry down, League of Legends, and over 70,000,000 above Fortnite. It's the first time Rockstar's behemoth has placed this high, at least since 2016 when StreamElements began recording this data. Just chatting is still plainly number one on the list, making up 265,000,000 hours watched in total for the month. More and more variety streamers are coming to the platform, and the streams are getting more, um, varied, shall we say. Over two million hours of sleep streams were watched, led by Ludwig Ahgren, whose endless subathon stream is actually still going, over three weeks strong at time of writing. | One Minecraft player’s ten-year journey to the Far Lands Posted: 10 Apr 2021 10:50 AM PDT Few games offer the kind of freedom that Minecraft does. Whether you're building gigantic fantasy structures, making your own games, or just exploring random Minecraft seeds, Mojang's iconic sandbox game is still brimming with possibilities over a decade after its initial launch. One player has been pushing one such possibility to its literal limit by hiking through blocky hills and square valleys in search of the Far Lands, a location so far away from your spawn point that Minecraft's procedural generation begins to fail. After ten years, and over $450,000 raised for charity, his lonesome journey has gathered a considerable following, even if he still has a long way to go. "I was just looking to make something a little bit different," Kurt 'KurtJMac' Mac says. "At the time, I hadn't done any research into how far away the Far Lands actually were. It was just a spur of the moment decision: 'Oh yeah, I can do that, let's try to walk to the edge of the map, that sounds interesting'. I didn't fully grasp the sheer distance, time, and effort that would be required." The Far Lands isn't so much a place as it is a glitch that overloads the world, warping the terrain, and causing massive rifts to appear. The glitch is only present in older versions of the game (Mac plays on Beta version 1.7.3) and occurs 12,550,821 blocks away from any seed's given start position. At the time of writing, Kurt is roughly 4,857,000 blocks into his journey; about 39%. RELATED LINKS: Minecraft console commands, Minecraft skins, Minecraft mods |
| Outriders will restore your lost legendaries from inventory wipe bug Posted: 10 Apr 2021 03:44 AM PDT An irritating Outriders bug has been wiping players' inventories, and now its occurrence has been (hopefully) reduced, the devs plan on restoring everyone's lost legendaries. A "mass restoration" event is due for the coming weeks in the multiplayer game, to give everyone back their most valuable loot. Developer People Can Fly posted about the event on the official subreddit. Since the latest patch has a fix for the disappearing equipment and weapons, the plan now is to remedy those inconvenienced. A one-off restoration is planned, on a date to-be-determined, that will give everyone back their legendary and epic pickups. It's "unlikely" that blue items will be included. When this happens, everything should just slide into your inventory alongside your existing collection. Items restored this way might not have the exact stats from when you last used them. All the proper details are in the air still, but People Can Fly is hoping to do this in the "coming weeks". The inventory wipes stem from crashes in multiplayer, and have been plaguing the action-adventure game since it was in beta. The team has been working hard to address all these issues as well as maintain the servers since launch of the full version. | TimeSplitters 2 remastered is out now on PC (inside Homefront: The Revolution) Posted: 09 Apr 2021 04:02 PM PDT Finally, Free Radical's cult classic, TimeSplitters 2, is available in remastered form on PC - inside Homefront: The Revolution. 2016's Homefront sequel has always had an arcade machine that let you play the first two levels of TimeSplitters 2 inside, but a developer recently revealed that the entire game was there all along, hidden behind an unlock code that had been lost to time. Now, just a few days later, players have figured out how to get access to the full game. According to developer Matt Phillips, who implemented the TimeSplitters 2 port, the full game was meant to be unlockable through some good, old-fashioned cheat codes. "The unlock code has been lost to time," Phillips says. "I don't have the notebook with it in anymore. I once gave it to a friend to leak in some Discord channel and they called him a liar and banned his account." With that in mind, the community immediately started working to find the code - and did so in a matter of days. The full list of codes to unlock the various TimeSplitters 2 modes are available here, and Steam community guides have even provided save files to minimise the amount of time you need to spend playing Homefront: The Revolution. |
