| The next BioShock will be an open-world game Posted: 12 Apr 2021 01:01 PM PDT We heard a while back that 2K Games was spinning up a new studio to work on the next entry in the BioShock series, and now some new job listings have provided a few more details about what we can expect when we finally see it. Unlike the BioShock games of the past, the next chapter in the FPS game series will be an open-world game, featuring "character-driven stories" and both primary and secondary missions. The studio working on the next BioShock game is called Cloud Chamber, and it's currently hiring for several positions. These include an AI programmer, UI/UX designer, a tools programmer, senior world designer, a senior technical designer, and a senior writer. This last, based in the Montreal office, will be a position responsible for helping to create the narrative content for BioShock 4, and the ad says the studio is looking for someone "who can weave impactful, character-driven stories in an open world setting." The senior writer will also be "brainstorming primary and secondary mission content with the design" and helping in "the creation and execution of the core story including the writing of dialogue and other narrative elements as director." The position reports directly to the project's lead writer. |
| Hearthstone’s latest balance patch brings merciful nerfs April 13 Posted: 12 Apr 2021 12:15 PM PDT The balance patch for Hearthstone we heard about last week hits Blizzard's card game tomorrow, and it's bringing with it some expected nerfs to a few of the best - or most broken - decks. Along with the balance changes, you can also expect some annoying UI/UX bugs to be addressed in the next update, which is due out tomorrow, April 13. Perhaps the most important change in the 20.0.2 patch is to Deck of Lunacy, which has become the centrepiece of the No Minion Mage deck. This card transforms spells in your deck into spells that cost three mana more, while keeping their original mana cost. Costing two mana itself to cast, Deck of Lunacy has proven to "provide a game-warping effect on turn 1 or 2," according to Hearthstone's developers, and they've increased its cost to four mana in order to rein it in somewhat while maintaining the "wacky, over-the-top" intent of the card. Similarly, Sword of the Fallen - which casts a Secret from your deck each time your hero attacks - is getting nerfed, with its durability being reduced from three to two. The idea here, the devs say, is to "reduce the overall value of the card and make those turns against 3-4 Secrets less common." | Best gaming microphone – top XLR and USB mics in 2021 Posted: 12 Apr 2021 10:05 AM PDT There's nothing quite like the added vocal clarity offered by the best gaming microphone, whether you're streaming, recording your own podcast, or you just want everyone to comment on your velvety voice when playing your favourite multiplayer games. And since we're spending more time indoors on Discord and Zoom than ever before, now is the ideal time to upgrade and cut out all that background noise. Even the best gaming headset, the Razer BlackShark V2, which boasts a particularly clean mic for an all-in-one solution, can't keep up with a dedicated microphone. After all, these products are designed from the ground up to capture your voice as close to the way it sounds in real life as possible. Better yet, they're becoming more affordable and accessible, with many falling below the $100 price tag and ditching some of the faff required to set them up. XLR microphones are still the go-to if you don't want to compromise on sound quality, but the popularity and prevalence of plug-and-play USB microphones mean you no longer need to be an audio engineer to take the leap as these cut out the need for separate interfaces entirely. We have a selection of both types in our list of best gaming microphones, and a buyer's guide to help you through what you'll need to get started. | Civ 6 gets its civilisations balance pass and trebuchets next week Posted: 12 Apr 2021 10:01 AM PDT The final free update of the Civ 6 New Frontier Pass is coming next week. This patch has been greatly anticipated, especially because it's going to be doing a much-needed pass on many Civ 6 civilisations by tweaking the abilities of the Civ 6 leaders and the civs themselves. When we looked into which civs the Civ 6 community wanted to see fixed, there wasn't a lot of consensus, although certain 'easy wins' involve factions like Spain and Georgia. These two were confirmed as civilisations being targeted by the patch, along with Khmer, China, Mapuche, and Canada. The full list of civs and their respective changes will be revealed when the patch notes drop on release. Also included in the new, free update are three new military units: Line Infantry, Men-at-Arms, and the long-requested fan favourite, the Trebuchet. Military units across the board have also been rebalanced to account for the extra soldiers. The AI has also been given an upgrade on how it handles naval units. | This Dota 2 mod turns it into a PvP roguelike game Posted: 12 Apr 2021 09:57 AM PDT Many Dota 2 mods take it far and away from the MOBA game that plenty of people know it as. Despite being a chess-focused spin on card battlers, Auto Chess started life as a fan project created within Dota 2. That said, it's getting a MOBA spin-off, so perhaps everything is coming full circle after all. Anyway, the latest Dota-related project to catch our eye is a mod called Atomic War. This one turns Dota 2 into a PvP roguelike game where you snap up heroes, equipment, and spells to build your strongest squad to fight against others. It's also sitting on a five-star rating after 1,574 votes. Atomic War is currently in alpha testing, so you may experience some oddities while you play it. Developer Atomic Nucleus Studio explains that matchmaking might be difficult, so you may want to find rooms in the lobby list by using the filter world 'Atomic'. It may save you having to wait for too long. The developer further explains that bots are automatically added if you start the game on your lonesome. If you're new to the mod, it may be a wise idea to start with your robo pals as you learn the ropes. RELATED LINKS: Dota 2 heroes, Dota 2 custom games, Which MOBA is best? |
| Call of Duty: Warzone can’t be confused with Warzone.com, says Activision Posted: 12 Apr 2021 09:36 AM PDT Call of Duty: Warzone publisher Activision says there's no way the gaming public could confuse its free-to-play battle royale game with a browser-based strategy game also called Warzone - the publisher of which has sought to block Activision from registering Call of Duty: Warzone as a trademark. Activision has now counter-sued, seeking a court declaration that would protect it from such lawsuits in the future. Activision Publishing, Inc. vs. Warzone.com LLC is a complaint for declaratory relief, which essentially means that Activision is asking the court to find that Warzone.com's trademark has not been infringed upon by the publication of Call of Duty: Warzone and the registration of the associated trademark by Activision. Such a finding would preempt future lawsuits against the publisher over the use of the term 'warzone,' which could prove important: as the complaint points out, there are at least 16 other games with 'Warzone' in the title available on the App Store, Google Play Store, and as browser-based games. Activision argues that the two Warzones in question are so dissimilar that it would be impossible to confuse one for the other - which is a crucial element of proving trademark infringement under US law. |
| No new Total Warhammer 2 DLC news expected “for a couple of months” Posted: 12 Apr 2021 09:01 AM PDT Total War: Warhammer III is coming, but its predecessor Warhammer II still has one last arrow in its quiver before it walks off into the sunset, its work finally done. During the big hubbub around the third game's announcement, a bunch of news came out of the official FAQ Creative Assembly always releases whenever it reveals, well, anything. This document mainly focused on Warhammer III, but it had a few things to say about Warhammer II as well. One was that the popular Total War game would be coming to the Epic Games Store, but another was that there would be one final piece of DLC released for the game before it gets consumed by its younger sibling. Now, Warhammer II recently received a free piece of DLC as part of the Rakarth update, but we're led to believe the final expansion mentioned in the FAQ will be a premium expansion, probably a final 'Lords' pack. Everyone (no one) hopes it will be Beastmen themed. Whatever it's going to be, we won't find out for a couple of months at least. | How to install Minecraft Forge Posted: 12 Apr 2021 08:59 AM PDT Want to know how to install Minecraft Forge and manage your mods? It's pretty simple to set up and once you get started, you'll have a place to keep track of all your mods, whether that's tweaking your interface or spicing up your exploration. Minecraft mods are not in short supply, so when it comes to managing the Forge mods you're using in Mojang's sandbox game, the sheer volume of mods can be a tad overwhelming. Minecraft Forge only works for the Java Edition, so if you're not living your best modding life on the original PC version, then there's plenty of fun to be had exploring Minecraft PE seeds to keep your busy for hours. If you do have the Java Edition, then Minecraft Forge is a fantastic tool for managing every single one of your compatible mods. When approaching it for the first time, it can be a little daunting. But don't fret, we've created an easy step-by-step guide to installing Forge for Minecraft so you can quickly and seamlessly alter your Minecraft experience. | Samsung’s high-capacity 860 Evo SSD is up to 45% cheaper Posted: 12 Apr 2021 08:36 AM PDT While the best SSD for gaming is an NVMe drive, they can get seriously pricey when you're looking at larger capacities. Hard drives are dirt cheap in comparison, but just aren't worth the dip in speed when even current generation consoles house M.2 SSDs. Fortunately, 2.5-inch SATA SSDs are a good middle ground, being around four times faster than a mechanical hard drive without costing you an arm and a leg. They're even better when they're on sale, too. Samsung's 1TB 860 EVO SATA SSD is heavily discounted in both the US and the UK, and is the perfect compliment for the best cheap gaming PC - especially when games like Microsoft Flight Simulator need to be installed on a solid state drive. With sequential read and write speeds of 550MB/s and 520MB/s respectively, this can freshen up any PC, helping it boot faster and decreasing load times in some games. In the US, the drive has a 45% ($89) discount, bringing the price down to $110 from $199. UK customers can take advantage of a similar 38% (£65) reduction, with a new price of £105 compared to its £169.99 MSRP. | World of Warcraft player brings down Torghast boss while solo and naked Posted: 12 Apr 2021 08:07 AM PDT World of Warcraft players have a thing for trying to accomplish challenges without any clothes on. One WoW Classic raid team managed to defeat Onyxia's lair without any clothes or world buffs, and someone even found a way to one-shot enemy players while, yes, naked. It doesn't matter if you're a human or a raid boss - if someone has brought you down while in the nude in WoW, you've been disrespected. The latest victim of the World of Warcraft's community crusade to bring any clothed foe down is a boss from the eighteenth floor of Torghast's Twisting Corridors Mode. One mage player managed to bring him down while naked and solo (thanks, Wowhead). Perhaps solo isn't entirely accurate, as he does spawn a bunch of nude dudes to help him see the fight through. Still, though, it's an amusing watch. What's especially impressive is that he managed to beat the boss while on floor 18 in layer eight. In Twisting Corridors, bosses and enemies scale up in difficulty the longer you carry on for. There are 18 floors to every layer, so you can get a sense of the challenge here. | Path of Exile 2 – all the latest info Posted: 12 Apr 2021 07:28 AM PDT There's no doubt the Path of Exile 2 release date will be on the mind of RPG games fans until it's revealed. We're no stranger to Grinding Gear Games launching Path of Exile updates with numbers on them. GGG has done a wonderful job keeping PoE topped up with content that keeps the game fresh with new challenge leagues, loot, and skill tree updates. Typically, the New Zealand-based developer keeps up with a new expansion every three months, which is mighty impressive. A big update like Path of Exile 2, though, is exciting. GGG has the opportunity to introduce bigger changes that'll really change the landscape of the game. We should also be getting a chonking big story to get through, and new classes to make PoE builds around. Keeping tabs on a new release can be a lot of work though, as various strands of information are scattered around the internet. To make that a touch easier, we're rounding up everything we know right here. So, here's what we've found out about the Path of Exile 2 release date, beta, gameplay, and more. | It’s not just GPUs suffering chip shortages, there’s a year-long waiting list for routers Posted: 12 Apr 2021 07:13 AM PDT We're no stranger to stock shortages plaguing the best graphics cards, latest consoles, and, to some extent, the best gaming CPUs, but chips are now so scarce that they're affecting routers, too. Bloomberg reports that supply chains are running dry, causing broadband providers across the world to wait more than double the length of time to receive their orders. Usually, carriers would wait up to 30 weeks for a new batch of routers to arrive, but quotes now exceed a year at 60 weeks long as manufacturers continue to suffer from 2020's factory shutdowns. This could eventually cap the amount of new subscribers a broadband provider can accommodate, which is particularly frustrating given the elevated demand for home broadband equipment but might see a respite as global lockdowns begin to ease. No company's run out of routers just yet, with Zyxel Communications' head of European regional business, Karsten Gewecke, saying it has "been very close several times." With the supply chokehold getting tighter, however, the Taiwan-based manufacturer says "it could still happen." RELATED LINKS: Best SSD for gaming, How to build a gaming PC, Best gaming CPU |
| Best Warzone loadout drop: the top class setups for Season Two Posted: 12 Apr 2021 06:47 AM PDT Looking for the best Warzone loadout to secure the win in Call of Duty's battle royale? Warzone has been out for a while, and it's clear that the best way to secure a win is to create a custom Warzone loadout drop and grab it in-match via the Warzone Buy Stations and regular drops. In case you're new to Call of Duty: Warzone and are just getting to grips with some of its curious additions – like the Gulag respawn mechanic – then loadout drops are a way of using your create-a-class setups from multiplayer in Warzone. Purchasing one of these will let you drop in your very own custom loadout almost instantaneously, meaning you can go from having a couple of common rarity weapons and some tactical gear to boasting two custom primary weapons of your choice, your favourite equipment, and even perks. However, weapon balancing is very different in Warzone than it is in multiplayer, and your choice of perks, gadgets, and primaries will not translate perfectly to Warzone's demands. We've earned plenty of wins and are pretty confident that we have the best loadout for Warzone to help you secure your first W, no matter how you prefer to play. |
| The best strategy games on PC in 2021 Posted: 12 Apr 2021 06:10 AM PDT What are the best strategy games on PC? Some would say StarCraft II, others Civilization VI while yet more still would say "actually, Civ 4 was the better civ ga-" but at that point we'd stop listening because who cares. Join us as we explore a curated collection of the genre's greatest hits, from newcomers to classics. Fun fact: the strategy genre was first invented back in 1938, when Winston Churchill looked out an aeroplane window over France and thought, "Hey, this would make a really cool videogame, whatever that is." Probably. Since then, there have been about a hundred million different strategy games, simulating as many different kinds of fighting as we humans have had reasons to fight one another. Turn-based or real-time, grand strategy or tactical... this genre is as diverse as they come. But which are the absolute top strategy games on PC? Well, just drag a selection box over our bodies and right-click on the horizon, and we'll find out. We have a strategy editor on our team now, so we can't be wrong. | How Final Fantasy XIV kept us clubbing through lockdown Posted: 12 Apr 2021 05:38 AM PDT For many of us, the first few months of lockdown are a distant haze of Zoom calls, forced quizzing, and desperate attempts to create a functional working space in a tiny flat. Time ticked away slowly, and it wasn't long before people started to crave real social interaction. Multiplayer games have helped to fill that void, providing social spaces where players can escape the monotony of their daily routines. Some players have gone a few steps further, creating their own virtual nightclubs in Final Fantasy XIV. Endless Nights, a group that hosts huge events and parties in the world of Eorzea, has paved the way for players to keep clubbing and partying through a time of confusion, frustration, and isolation. The Tavern is its main event, a casual bar setting with in-house bards providing the beats and role-playing staff ensuring an authentic nightlife experience. Endless Nights' other core event, The Afterparty, is designated as a strictly adult venue, intended "to provide patrons with the darker and more passionate side of nightlife". | Lady Dimitrescu comes to Fallout 4 with this Resident Evil Village mod Posted: 12 Apr 2021 05:08 AM PDT Lady Dimitrescu hasn't even hit our PCs yet, and the internet is positively obsessed with the mutant countess. Named Alcina Dimitrescu in full, she's an antagonist in the upcoming horror game Resident Evil Village, standing at 9ft 6in tall and clad in a vintage white and black gown ensemble - and she's been, er, getting fans a little hot under the collar since her first reveal. Such is the gaming world's captivation with her that she's now come to Fallout 4 ahead of her actual debut. Fallout 4 modder Vtaw has created a very authentic outfit mod based on the good countess, which it seems is based like-for-like on her upcoming appearance in Resident Evil Village (you can get an idea of Lady Dimitrescu in the clip below if you haven't yet been introduced). Her billowing, long-sleeved ivory gown - which looks like it's heavily inspired by 1910s women's fashion - is just as it appears in those gameplay previews and towering bus adverts we've seen so far. The satin gown cinched at the waist, massive black hat and matching gloves, ornate necklace, and cluster of dark roses pinned to her front - it's a really close match to the real deal. | Best Warzone guns: the top weapons to use in Call of Duty battle royale Posted: 12 Apr 2021 05:00 AM PDT Warzone guns are, unsurprisingly, pretty key to victory. Even if you win your Warzone Gulag fight right at the end of the match and parachute in, you'll still need to scrounge together some weapons to stand a chance at winning the match. Warzone guns behave very differently than they do in core multiplayer modes, so the knowledge base doesn't transfer. Besides, with the largest map in Call of Duty history, 149 other players to outlast, and new mechanics like an armour plate system, your needs are very different than in a match on Rust or Crash. So, what are the best Warzone guns and weapons to pickup and fight with, or to base your best Warzone loadout drop around? We've secured several wins in Warzone, watched even more streamer wins, and lost many more matches on top of that, so we're confident we can present you with a list of the best Warzone guns to use in Call of Duty's sophomore battle royale experience. Naturally, personal preference does play a huge role here, so if you disagree with some of our picks then there's nothing wrong with you racking up headshots and team wipes with a different gun in Warzone. |
| Best assault rifle Warzone: what is the top AR in battle royale? Posted: 12 Apr 2021 04:43 AM PDT It's tricky to pick the best assault rifle in Warzone as it's the weapon class with the most options and the most variation between each pick. You've got fast-firing, highly mobile Warzone assault rifles like the FFAR 1 and Groza, all the way up to hard-hitting battle rifles like the Cold War AK47 or Oden. And there are even multiple ways to build each assault rifle in Warzone if you want to make the most out of the best Warzone loadouts. We've already broken down the best SMG in Warzone and the best sniper in Warzone, so it's time to run through arguably the most widely used weapon type in Call of Duty's battle royale. The Season 2 Reloaded update has nerfed the most popular assault rifles in the game. These weapons may have lost some power and accuracy, but they're still among the best weapons in Warzone. So, which of these Warzone guns is the best in its class? Naturally a huge part of this call comes down to personal preference, but there's no escaping the fact that some of the assault rifles in Warzone boast far superior DPS stats or better magazine sizes than others. Join us as we rank all of the best assault rifles in Warzone, starting with the pinnacle of the weapon type and working down to the weakest choice. |
| The best Dota 2 heroes for beginners Posted: 12 Apr 2021 05:01 AM PDT What are the best Dota 2 heroes for beginners? Getting started in Dota 2 can seem like a bit of a daunting task. 120 heroes staring at you from the pick screen, arranged in all sorts of categories, grimacing at you unattractively. Learning the game is complex enough without having to narrow down your hero choices, so we've done all the hard work for you - we advise picking one of the following. All of the heroes play a very specific role in battle. Some of them can be played in multiple roles, sometimes even within the same game. To do well at Dota 2 it is important to understand what these roles are and how they interact with each other. But it is equally as important to realise that a hero's role should inform how you play them and the items you purchase. If you're finding these basics a touch confusing, don't worry: so did we when we started playing. But now we've learned the strategies behind a great team, we can provide you with advice to help you choose the right character, and understand their position in the five-player team. | Best SMG Warzone: which submachine gun to use in battle royale Posted: 12 Apr 2021 04:09 AM PDT When it comes to picking the best SMG in Warzone, there are so many candidates to pick from since the Cold War guns made their way to the battle royale game. The recent changes to the Warzone meta with nerfs to the FFAR 1 and AUG have made SMGs a viable pick once more. Not only have the nerfs had a big impact on the meta, the changes made to attachments in Season 2 Reloaded have given SMGs a huge boost in damage and mobility. The main factors you need to consider in Warzone when picking an SMG are mag capacity, DPS, and the amount of time it takes to aim down sights or transition from sprinting to firing. SMGs aren't used that much in Warzone where the extremely long lines of sight favour assault rifles and the best Warzone guns like the AX-50. If you're looking for a long-range option to compliment some of your best Warzone loadouts then here's our guide to the best sniper in Warzone. However, when you reach the final circle or need to cross some close-quarters streets to reach the next zone you'll be grateful you have the best SMG in Warzone. |
| Diablo 2: Resurrected players have already found an item duping glitch Posted: 12 Apr 2021 03:36 AM PDT Ah, hello, old friend. Some cheeky scamps have figured out how to duplicate items while playing the Diablo 2: Resurrected alpha. One player took to the game's subreddit to share some footage on it, with others piling in to explain how it's done. Pulling it off is pretty simple - all you have to do is move an item to your shared stash, save and exit, and then move the same item out of your shared inventory and hit the Alt and F4 keys when you log back in. I doubt it'll stick around for long - this is an alpha after all - but it's amusing to see it return given the series' history with the bug. In a Diablo 2: Resurrected interview last month, we asked Blizzard how it's striking a balance between keeping cheesy strategies intact and stomping out things like item duping. While the team is happy to keep your overpowered character builds the same, item duping is something that isn't sticking around. "I think the main thing is going to modern Battle.net," lead producer Chris Lena explained. "Being on that system gives us a lot of inherent security features that Diablo 2 currently doesn't have. So that's a big part of it. |
| The best Akimbo pistols in Warzone Posted: 12 Apr 2021 02:43 AM PDT Looking for a breakdown of the best Warzone pistols to use with Akimbo? When Warzone first launched pistols were at the very bottom of the list of best Warzone guns to include in your Warzone loadouts. However, the addition of the Akimbo perk has transformed these middling sidearms into unstoppable close-quarters killers. The obvious con is that you can't aim down sights with dual pistols, but their hip-fire accuracy and time-to-kill is so good that you won't need to. Right now there are several highly viable Akimbo pistol builds for Warzone. The reason these are so powerful is that you only need to get one loadout drop to have a class with Ghost, a long-range primary weapon of your choice, and the pistols can act as your best close-quarters option. If you're going for a loadout without Overkill then these are the ideal secondary weapons. You can always grab a fully modded Warzone MP5 off an enemy after you eliminate them if you want something with a bit more range. Below we'll lay out our picks for the top six Akimbo pistol builds for Warzone. If you only jumped into Warzone recently then you'll have quite a hefty grind waiting for you to full level these sidearms up. |
| Genshin Impact’s main story continues today Posted: 12 Apr 2021 02:33 AM PDT Genshin Impact has been going strong for over six months now, but we've yet to see the culmination of its main quest. The anime game gets an update every six weeks or so that offers plenty to distract you in the meantime, but today we've got a new chapter in the Archon quest as part of update 1.4, Invitation of Windblume's second stage. Archon Quest Chapter I: Act IV - We Will Be Reunited takes us back to the Abyss Order storyline, with the last one featuring the Fatui as the big bad. The latest tale is set in motion when Ganyu and Lan tell you that the Treasure Hoarders of Mondstadt and Liyue are coming together to do something with ruins associated with the Abyss Order. To play this one, you'll need to be Adventure Rank 36 or above. You'll also need to have the Lupus Minor Chapter: Act I - The Meaning of Lupical and Chapter I: Act IV (Prelude) - Bough Keeper: Dainsleif quests wrapped up. The quest went live at 4am BST on the European server, so it should just about be available for everyone by now.
