| Upcoming 4X Humankind reveals Americans as its first Contemporary culture Posted: 13 Apr 2021 02:13 PM PDT In Humankind, Amplitude's forthcoming 4X game that seems ready to take on the hoary Civilization franchise, you won't be stuck to playing a single culture throughout any game - or, you will, except that culture will take on new characteristics as eras progress. Amplitude today has revealed that one of your cultural choices in the game's Contemporary Era will be Americans, and they'll have their own emblematic unit and district to consider when you hit that timeframe. In the Contemporary era, Americans represent the 'expansionist' mindset among Humankind cultures. That's led to quite a bit of (sometimes heated) discussion on the Humankind subreddit, with several fans saying they had expected the US to be a merchant or militaristic society rather than an expansionist one. There are certainly arguments to be made for America slotting into just about any of Humankind's announced cultural affinities, but given the global dynamics of the Cold War that typified much of the 20th century's geopolitical history, 'expansionist' is probably at least as correct as any of the other possibilities. That said, the Americans' emblematic unit is the F-35 Lightning combat aircraft, and the emblematic district is the Defense Agency. | Apex Legends Season 9 – everything we know Posted: 13 Apr 2021 02:04 PM PDT Wondering what's coming to Apex Legends Season 9? The ninth season of the battle royale game is right around the corner, and the devs are releasing regular content ahead of the forthcoming update. War Games will be taking over Apex Legends from April 13, giving players a chance to try out some experimental game modes for the next two weeks. Apex Legends has always been set in the Titanfall universe, but it looks like Respawn Entertainment plans to make the connection stronger in Season 9. What this means for Apex Legends remains to be seen - could titans somehow make their way to the battlefield? There's been plenty of rumours suggesting main characters from Titanfall could join the Apex Legends roster, though nothing concrete has happened so far. Season 8 introduced us to Fuse, the explosives expert from Salvo, and brought about huge changes to Kings Canyon, drastically improving multiple areas of the classic map. Both Fuse and the new 30-30 Repeater failed to snatch one of the top spots in our Apex Legends weapons tier list and Apex Legends legends tier list, though this could all change next season. Here's everything you need to know about Apex Legends Season 9. RELATED LINKS: Apex Legends characters guide, Apex Legends skins, Apex Legends map guide |
| Our favourite budget gaming headset from Asus just got up to 30% cheaper Posted: 13 Apr 2021 01:28 PM PDT If you're building the best cheap gaming PC, sometimes the budget doesn't stretch far enough for flashy peripherals, but spending less doesn't mean you have to go without - you just need to know where to make the smart sacrifices. If you don't mind forgoing RGB lighting that you wouldn't be able to see anyway, the Asus TUF Gaming H3 is the best gaming headset on a budget for the past two years running, and it just got even cheaper. Those of you in the US can grab the headset 30% cheaper on Amazon, bringing it down to $35 rather than its usual $50 price tag. Folks over in the UK aren't missing out either, as a 9% discount brings the cost down to £50. Don't let the price fool you, though, as the Asus TUF Gaming H3 goes toe-to-toe with premium alternatives. The sound is punchy with its proprietary 50mm Essence drivers, it's true to its name with a durability that can withstand more than a few knocks, and it's comfier than most with a clamp that has just enough force to keep them firmly on your head. | Warframe’s Call of the Tempestarii update arrives with a kickass space shanty Posted: 13 Apr 2021 12:27 PM PDT Warframe's much-anticipated Call of the Tempestarii arrives today, bringing with it some of the biggest changes the space-ninja MMORPG has seen in years. Along with a new questline that takes place out in the newly revamped Railjack space, Call of the Tempestarii introduces Sevagoth, the 46th warframe, and an absolutely badass space pirate sea shanty. In Call of the Tempestarii, you'll be traveling across the Corpus Proxima, exploring a sector ripped apart by war alongside the Railjack AI Cephalon Cy. You'll travel through dangerous void storms, battle all new Corpus bosses, and investigate "ghostly disturbances" in the eerie questline. We've gotten a pretty good rundown of the changes coming in this update thanks to Digital Extremes' dev workshop update, but today the studio has pulled everything together with a launch trailer that includes the aforementioned space shanty. The trailer only features a few bars of the tune, but just based on that we can already tell it's another genuine banger - I like this one even more than 'We All Lift Together,' the work-gang tune that accompanied the release of the Fortuna expansion back in 2018. | MSI rolls out a BIOS update to fix AMD USB issues, but it’s still in beta Posted: 13 Apr 2021 11:58 AM PDT MSI is the first manufacturer to roll out a new BIOS update containing AMD's AGESA 1.2.0.2 firmware, which should fix intermittent USB issues for those running a Ryzen 5000 CPU on a 500 series motherboard. The update is currently in beta, but installing it is a no-brainer if you're already suffering with problems. The issues have been around since Zen 3 processors launched late last year, but AMD only started investigating reports in February. The red team found a fix three weeks later, but the lengthy distribution time means it needs to go through motherboard partners before you can install it onto your system. Fortunately, MSI's been quick to the mark meeting the schedule, releasing the update for 21 of its motherboards since April 8. This is split across five X570 and 16 B550 variants, but don't fret if you can't see your model listed as there are plenty more updates on the way. Eventually, no one will be left out of the loop with the latest generation, X470, and B450 motherboards all getting the fix. | Microsoft Flight Simulator World Update 4 revamps France and Benelux Posted: 13 Apr 2021 10:12 AM PDT Just a touch behind schedule, Microsoft Flight Simulator's World Update 4 has arrived. The major update to the simulator game focuses its attention on France and the Benelux Union, adding a huge list of new points of interest, some new hand-crafted airports, and new activities - plus some welcome tweaks and fixes. The free update adds more than 100 new points of interest to France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg in Flight Simulator, as well as to several other areas in the game. Now you'll be able to swing by Reims Cathedral and the Royal Saltworks at Arc-et-Senans before taking in Luxembourg's Musée Draï Eechelen and Vianden Castle on your way to the Palais de Justice in Brussels. Head across the Atlantic to take in the revamped lighthouses at the Caserne Loubère military base in French Guiana, Pointe aux Canons in Sainte Pierre, and on the La Caravelle peninsula in Martinique. You'll have newly handcrafted airports to work out of once you download the update, too: there's the tiny Megève altiport high up in the French Alps, Nice Côte d'Azur Airport on the gorgeous Mediterranean coast, and Rotterdam The Hague Airport, for all passengers bound for visits to the International Criminal Court. | Posted: 13 Apr 2021 07:55 AM PDT The developers at Firaxis are big supporterss of XCOM 2 mods, and while they seem to have left the community to their own devices they havealso made it so easy for modders to really change the whole game. Showing their commitment to the fans, Firaxis actually teamed up with Pavonis Interactive (the creators of the original Long War mod for Enemy Unknown) to make sure that the modding tools were as streamlined as they could be before releasing them into the wild. Below is a selection of some of our favourite mods from the venerable turn-based strategy game, although it's worth pointing out this is a slightly fragmented list due to the slightly weird nature of the XCOM 2 DLC library. The difference between vanilla XCOM 2 and War of the Chosen is a little bit like night and day, so the modding objectives for both versions of the game can be quite different. A mod for one won't necessarily work for the other without some tinkering. Some mods on our list have versions available for both, and we've marked them where relevant. | Genshin Impact 1.5 release date and everything we know Posted: 13 Apr 2021 09:49 AM PDT Want to know everything that's coming in the Genshin Impact 1.5 update? It wasn't all that long that we were speculating about the current update to the hit free-to-play RPG, and now we've got even more stuff coming our way. There is a slight snag though: this may be the last time players will know well in advance what's coming to the game. Not long after the 1.4 update dropped, details were leaked from various sources about what's coming in the next update. So many in fact that it prompted Mihoyo to speak out publicly about the consequences of leaked information. So far, nothing has been officially announced and all the information gathered could change in the 1.5 update, but according to the leaks, at least two new Genshin Impact characters are coming to the game, as well as a rerun of a previously released character, several events, and a new gameplay feature, among many other offerings. | A Roblox player managed to “sneak” into the White House press corps Posted: 13 Apr 2021 08:29 AM PDT Roblox is a true sandbox game that lets players do just about anything - but infiltrating White House press briefings probably wasn't on the design document when its developers began working on it. But one Roblox player seems to have done exactly that - beginning with a government roleplay group, a player developed an online persona that's managed to pose questions directly to the US president's press secretary. Politico has the full story of 'Kacey Montagu,' a name that's popped up several times in White House press briefings with Biden administration press secretary Jen Psaki. This person doesn't exist, as the story explains - it's the name of a persona for a person whose identity is unclear. Montagu began, it seems, in a Roblox role-playing group called nUSA, which is dedicated to simulating a fictional US government the way that high school students will sometimes participate in a 'mock UN' exercise. From there, they created an email address for the persona, as well as Twitter accounts that re-publish widely available information (such as the vice president's daily schedule) to burnish the persona's credentials as an official reporter. | PoE: 3.14 release date: everything we know about the Path of Exile Ultimatum Posted: 13 Apr 2021 08:27 AM PDT Want to know everything that's coming in the Path of Exile 3.14 Ultimatum update? Along with the latest news about Path of Exile 2, a wealth of new information about the Path of Exile Ultimatum expansion was unveiled during a livestream from developer Grinding Gear Games. We now know more about what to expect from the update, including the new Ultimatum trials and a whole bunch of reworks and updates to the already released league updates. Compared to previous expansions, 3.14 has far less new stuff, but when we say the prior league updates and expansions are getting reworks, we're talking extensive reworks. Not only will more recent leagues get balance updates, but 3.14 also introduces a ton of loot drop updates and tweaks to older items to make them more competitive with items from more recent updates. Given that Path of Exile is now almost eight years old, that's a ton of expansions to adjust. Honestly, trying to round up everything into one neat package is an undertaking, but we figure that it's best to just keep everything as brief and simple as possible for you. Here is everything that's coming in the Path of Exile 3.14 Ultimatum update. RELATED LINKS: PoE 3.9 release date, Best free PC games, Free MMO list |
| Call of Duty: Warzone’s windows are stressing players out Posted: 13 Apr 2021 08:22 AM PDT Since the start of the month, Call of Duty: Warzone players have been using the 'FixWZ' hashtag to highlight issues they've found with Activision's popular battle royale game. You'll probably see it on the game's subreddit or in Warzone itself, but it typically draws attention to things like overpowered guns or bugs like the stim glitch. Over the past couple of days, though, it has been about windows. It looks like Warzone has a glitch that stops anything from passing through 'em. It sounds like a minor nuisance, but it has led to some pretty glorious goofs. Look, I appreciate that a broken game is frustrating, but some of these clips are hilarious. My personal favourite comes from one player who tries to toss some C4 through a window only to have it stick to, well, nothing and blow up in his face. Another Reddit post sees a player relentlessly melee a big slab of glass he can't bust his way through, while a separate clip is just two bros shooting each other, wondering why neither of them is taking damage. |
| Age of Empires 4’s biggest challenge will be its own legacy Posted: 13 Apr 2021 08:14 AM PDT What do you do when your biggest threat is your past self? Recently we were treated to our first proper overview of Age of Empires 4, the long-awaited new entry in one of strategy gaming's most enduring series. We got a taste of the campaign, new civilisations, and insights into the design. It was a lot to take in. One thing that became apparent quite quickly is how similar Age of Empires 4 seems to its most influential predecessor. Age of Empires 2 is easily the most popular RTS game on the market right now, let alone the most popular in the series. It was the first Age of Empires Microsoft decided to uplift into HD back in 2013, and the only game in the series that has seen consistent support since then, which has only continued through its definitive edition. We also know it's set to get even more support across 2021. In other words, it's a behemoth, and Microsoft's decision to set Age of Empires 4 in the same time period and act as a spiritual successor (of sorts) to Age of Empires 2 is bold. And risky. | Dota 2 patch brings bottle refill changes and some unannounced updates Posted: 13 Apr 2021 07:51 AM PDT It's been a big month for Dota 2, with the arrival of the MOBA game's new hammer-swinging hero Dawnbreaker and the chonky 7.29 gameplay patch late last week. Since these, Valve's battler has seen a couple of weeny follow-up updates to make a few changes here and there, with a new one dropping today that adjusts how a key item works, and brings a handful of unannounced changes. Today's Dota 2 gameplay update brings just one solitary change to the multiplayer game, but it's one to make a note of: "Bottle now only refills two charges when capturing Water or Bounty runes". This follows some discussion on Reddit wondering if a change some players had spotted following the recent 7.29 update - that a full bottle item with three charges would lose a charge (down to two) if you scooped up a Bounty or Water rune - was a bug or a gameplay update. From today's notes, we now know the bottle's functionality has got an official change - so, going forward, the storage item will work a little differently, and tactics for mid-laners around planning instant restores of health and mana (or gold!), might need to shift to account for the fewer charges. | Nvidia triples the expected revenue of its crypto mining GPUs amid a strong Q1 Posted: 13 Apr 2021 07:30 AM PDT It might seem as though the graphics card landscape is as dry as a bone from the outside looking in, but Nvidia revealed to investors that it's doing particularly well during the first quarter of 2021. In fact, the company is doing so good that it's on track to exceed the estimated $5.3 billion revenue it originally predicted, in no small part thanks to its dedicated crypto mining GPUs. Nvidia announced the Crypto Mining Processor (CMP) series in February as an attempt to alleviate the demand placed on its gaming graphics cards, but they're flying off digital shelves fast enough to warrant tripling the projected outlook from $50 million to $150 million for Q1 - and this doesn't even factor in how well GeForce models are doing. Nvidia's attitude has progressed since the original crypto mining boom, from brushing it off due to its volitility to CEO Jensen Huang expecting it to be a "small part" of the business moving forward. It looks like crypto mining could be a much larger chunk of the pie, though, with CMP cards potentially balancing the scales so you can once again get your hands on a GPU to play games. | Minecraft book: how to make paper in Minecraft Posted: 13 Apr 2021 07:37 AM PDT Want to know how to create your own Minecraft book? Books can be used for enchanting, crafting, or even to make your very own Minecraft enchanting table and a lovingly crafted bookshelf to go alongside it. Books can also be enchanted themselves and, combined with a Minecraft anvil, they can enchant other items, such as your weapons or your Minecraft shield. There are a few ways to get your hands on enchanted books: you can trade them with librarian villagers, find them in rare pillager raid drops, or even from fishing. If you've got an abundance of these enchanted books, you can disenchant them using a Minecraft grindstone. There are other ways of obtaining normal books, you can get three books by mining a bookshelf, but if you'd rather save yourself the trouble, here's everything you need to know about creating a Minecraft book yourself. The number one ingredient you need to make a book is, of course, paper, so here are all the details you need to get started. | Fortnite is getting a Horizon Zero Dawn Aloy skin and limited-time mode Posted: 13 Apr 2021 07:21 AM PDT Update - April 13, 2021: Confirmed! Epic Games has confirmed the collaboration on PlayStation's blog. Aloy is dropping into Fornite on April 15, so you only have two more days to wait. The limited-time mode, Team Up! Aloy and Lara, kicks off on the same day and runs until April 18. Original story follows. We're getting a skin for the game's protagonist, Aloy, which is relatively customary at this point. Over the past few months, we've seen characters from Tomb Raider, Terminator, Street Fighter, and God of War make their way to Epic's mishmash of pop culture. Most of these characters were datamined beforehand, too. Dataminers have also found mention of a limited-time mode. As ShiinaBR explains, it's called "Team Up! Aloy and Lara", and it involves using loot from wildlife and technology to upgrade your weapons. Apparently, all weapons can be upgraded to legendary quality, though it looks like we'll have to keep our wits about us. Dataminers have dug up teases that wildlife might be "lurking in the bushes". | Stellaris: Nemesis review – begun, the endgame has Posted: 13 Apr 2021 08:33 AM PDT For the first time in four years, Stellaris has a new ending. The final third of Paradox's sci-fi grand strategy game had been virtually unchanged since the release of 2017's Utopia expansion, which offered a one-dimensional path through the later stages of a campaign. No more - Stellaris: Nemesis, the newest add-on for the 4X game, builds on the systems introduced in previous DLC to deliver a new endgame, representing the most relevant and exciting addition to Stellaris in a long time. Nemesis is themed around a central choice - do you want to save the galaxy, or destroy it? Experienced players will remember the original endgame crises that could trigger, usually involving giant NPC-controlled fleets. Now, a new ascension perk enables factions to instead become the crisis, granting Menace points via offensive actions such as conquering planets, vassalising, and just generally destroying things. As you accrue more Menace you also gain access to higher crisis perks, ranging from alternative ship types and purge bonuses all the way to the ultimate goal: the galaxy-ending Aetherophasic Engine. This weapon of total destruction (no messing around with puny mass destruction here) eradicates every single star in the galaxy so your species can transcend to another dimension. To do that, you need vast quantities of Dark Matter, which is only obtainable by killing stars. RELATED LINKS: Stellaris review, Stellaris mods, Stellaris DLC guide |
| Nier: Automata’s Steam version is getting an upgrade Posted: 13 Apr 2021 05:20 AM PDT Square Enix is giving Nier: Automata's Steam version some TLC. The publisher took to Twitter to tell fans that an "upgrade patch" for the sombre RPG is currently in development. That's all the details we have right now, but Square Enix says it'll have more information to share with you at a "later date". This all follows Nier: Automata's Become As Gods edition coming to Game Pass on PC after being available on Xbox One. Fans reckon it's a much better version of the game on Steam, so they started review bombing the one that's available on Valve's storefront. When the game was initially released in 2017, people came across UI problems, awkward controls, a locked framerate, and other issues. As such, a mod called Fix Automata Resolution swiftly became the recommended way to play one of Yoko Taro's best games on PC. The Become as Gods version that Game Pass has got, meanwhile, comes with a borderless window mode, runs smoother, and has upscaled textures, which the Steam version owners would quite like. |
| Galax says its Micron-filled DDR5 RAM is “coming soon” Posted: 13 Apr 2021 04:36 AM PDT Galax might not be the first company you think of when you're looking for the best gaming RAM, being more prominent in the enthusiast graphics card market, but it's preparing its own DDR5 memory. The brand teased that it recently received DDR5 chips from Micron, meaning we should see the next generation of Gamer and Hall of Fame (HOF) series RAM in the near future. It's not clear how far into development Galax is with DDR5 RAM, but the batch pictured in the Facebook post only contains 100 DRAM modules, which is nowhere near enough for mass production. It's a good sample size to test the memory speeds, timings, and stability, however, which would match the rumoured timelines for Intel and AMD to release compatible platforms later this year. Galax already offers DDR4 RAM, with its HOF Extreme limited edition kit capping out at 5000MHz. DDR5 has a lower voltage and higher data rates that will reportedly start at a base clock of 4800MHz, but has a much larger ceiling, supporting frequencies as high as 8400MHz. We're not quite sure where the DDR5 HOF kits will land in terms of speed, but the company's reputation for overclocking means we could see something towards the upper limit. | GTA 5 modder brings the Cayo Perico heist to single-player Posted: 13 Apr 2021 04:21 AM PDT While GTA Online offers plenty of hustle and bustle, some people prefer the solace of single-player. You can still live amongst Los Santos and go about your day-to-day grind, though chances are you won't be blown to bits by a rocket from a flying motorbike. While GTA Online's heists are one of the few things that tempt me to break stride, even those are coming to single-player thanks to the work of modders. HKH191 managed to bring the crime game's most recent outing, the Cayo Perico heist, to GTA 5's offline mode, finally allowing me to rob El Rubio as Trevor. You're even getting the Kosatka, a chonking giant submarine with missiles that features in the Cayo Percio update. The heist comes with five startup missions and one big finale. Much like GTA Online, you can do this one solo, but you can get a team of AI teammates if you fancy tackling this with a gang. The way you approach the finale still comes down to decisions you make, such as what vehicle you want to kick things off with. RELATED LINKS: GTA 5 mods, GTA 6, Buy GTA V |
| Starfield release date – all the latest news on the next Bethesda game Posted: 13 Apr 2021 04:14 AM PDT When is the Starfield release date? Starfield is the first new Bethesda series in 25 years, but it's likely it's a long way off yet. Regardless, that's still cause enough to scream so loud with excitement that it could be heard in space. But there's more: Starfield sees the beloved Fallout and Elder Scrolls studio leaving the ground and heading out among, well, the stars - an area of interest I suppose you could call a Starfield. What has the studio found there? That's what we're looking to work out, as the first meteorites filled with information begin to fall from the sky. Bethesda's online-only title, Fallout 76, disappointed us as much as it did fans of the post-apocalyptic games series. However, in some ways, Starfield is a surer prospect: a single-player game, just like Skyrim and Fallout 4 before it. In other ways it's bolder and stranger - a completely new universe, whereas Fallout and The Elder Scrolls are rooted in decades of established lore, locations, and creatures. Here's everything we know about Starfield. RELATED LINKS: Starfield release date, Best space games, Elder Scrolls 6 release date |
| This Witcher 3 mod adds a new standalone quest to wrap up Blood and Wine Posted: 13 Apr 2021 12:29 PM PDT If you've bested The Witcher 3 - and by Witcher 3, I mean the RPG game's full experience, two expansions and all - you'll have encountered Orianna's quest, Blood Simple. Featured as a possible main quest in the game's second DLC, Blood and Wine, it ends with something of a loose end - but now a new standalone quest mod aims to tell the tale to its end. Spoilers ahead, folks. Nikich340's Witcher 3 new quest mod is called A Night To Remember, and it continues Orianna's questline beyond where Blood and Wine stops - so, after the point at which Geralt lets the vampire go, having vowed to deal with her should they ever cross paths again. It's described as a "completely new adventure featuring characters new and old", with "new writing, cutscenes, voice acting, assets, a special reward, and some difficult decisions..." Gulp. What this new adventure - and these tricky new decisions - might bring exactly aren't detailed on the mod's page, but you can get a flavour of the quest in the clip below. Plus, the creator notes in the mod's comments that "after completing the quest you may try [...]other variants in main dialogue scenes to get another ending", so it sounds like there'll be different outcomes at its conclusion. Neat. RELATED LINKS: The Witcher 3 mods, The Witcher 4 news, Play The Witcher 3 |
