Siege Survival offers a civilian’s frightening perspective on Total War

Siege Survival offers a civilian’s frightening perspective on Total War

We've put countless cities, towns, villages, and dwarven holds under siege during our thousands of collective hours in the Total War strategy games, but these experiences have always been from the perspective of the battlefield commander. What are those sieges like for the people living in these settlements? Siege Survival: Gloria Victis is an upcoming hybrid of strategy and survival games that puts you in the tattered boots of a city resident, and it's your job to live and help your town repulse a Viking invasion.

Holed up in the keep of a medieval town under siege, you'll have to gradually piece together the means necessary to survive the onslaught of enemy troops and help the castle defenders push them back. Rather than commanding formations of troops, you'll be controlling a small but growing group of rag-tag survivors, and you'll have to decide how each one spends his or her time and resources.

At night, for instance, you can sneak into the occupied city to forage for food and scrounge materials. That's dangerous, however - hostile troops patrol the city districts, and you'll have to be careful about how far you press your luck on nightly excursions.

A lot more games are about to get Nvidia DLSS with upcoming support for Unity

A lot more games are about to get Nvidia DLSS with upcoming support for Unity

Nvidia is doubling down on Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), announcing at GTC 2021 that Unity will support the feature natively by the end of the year. This marks the second major game engine to integrate the technology following Epic Games' Unreal Engine plugin, meaning you'll likely be able to boost fps on the majority of future titles if you own a GeForce RTX graphics card.

Adoption has been somewhat slow since the original version of DLSS launched in 2018, but has ramped up since the second iteration landed early last year. DLSS 2.0 no longer comes with the same graphical sacrifices of its predecessor, but still manages to double the frame rate in games like Fortnite, Outriders, and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, where fps can mean the difference between a win and a loss. It's particularly helpful at reducing ray tracing's performance tax in the likes of Cyberpunk 2077, too.

The trick is to make implementation as simple as possible for developers since DLSS is only available on the best graphics cards from Nvidia. With native support arriving as a part of the 2021.2 update, Unreal devs will be able to add the feature to their games "in just a few clicks."

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s first DLC is delayed into May

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s first DLC is delayed into May

The first DLC expansion for Assassin's Creed Valhalla has been delayed, but don't worry - it's not by much. Wrath of the Druids, which will explore some of England's Gaelic folklore and culture, has been pushed back to May 13 to allow for "a more refined experience," Ubisoft says.

The publisher of the medieval open-world game says an article with more details about the decision to delay the game is forthcoming, but it's not hard to guess at the reasons: in addition to dealing with work-from-home conditions for most of the past year, Assassin's Creed Valhalla has had somewhat more than the usual share of bugs to deal with since launch. Early on, fast travel needed an urgent fix, and both the Yule and spring Ostara festival events introduced their share of wonky glitches.

Not all the patches Ubisoft has pushed out have been to correct problematic bugs, however. A significant patch last month added more cats to the Viking game's world, which was cause for much rejoicing here at PCGamesN.

Nier Replicant features cut content from the original and something for “Dad Nier” fans

Nier Replicant features cut content from the original and something for “Dad Nier” fans

Nier Replicant isn't just an opportunity to introduce the original game to Automata players, it's a chance for the developers to gamble on design and story decisions they've passed upon before. We recently got the chance to speak to producer Yosuke Saito about his return to the game, and tells us that some of the ideas for the upcoming PC game's new content began swirling around more than ten years ago.

"There are some extra story sections that we were unable to put into the original," Saito tells us. "There is also a heartrendingly sad but unbelievably powerful new boss lying in wait for you somewhere. Please enjoy it all."

There's more, too. Saito tells us you'll find plenty of links to Nier: Automata and "something" to do with a beloved character from the original game. "There are loads of extra bits in there," he confirms. "There's a new story, an extra link to Automata, and something for fans of 'Dad Nier' too, so I think that people who played the original version ten years ago will be more than satisfied as well."

This fan-made CS:GO mod reworks classic map Office with a modern spin

This fan-made CS:GO mod reworks classic map Office with a modern spin

If you're a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive fan who's into giving the FPS game's community creations a whirl, you'll know the CS:GO modding scene is thriving. Neat fan-made weapon skins and custom maps hit the multiplayer game's slice of Steam Workshop every day, but the past week or so has seen more than the usual number of impressive goodies.

A new fan-made map by three CS:GO modders - Stefftek.de, アクアAqua, and Cloud - called CS_Bureau is one such treat. It's a hostage rescue map that takes inspiration from CS:GO's Office (CS_Office) map and reworks it, giving it a more modern flavour, as well as a bunch of easter eggs and other little titbits. The scenario hinges on a group of suspected terrorists' infiltration of a fictional marketing company in Germany, who have - as you'd expect - taken hostages.

"Among the hostages is the managing director, for whom a ransom demand is outstanding," the creators explain. "The hostage-takers have locked themselves in the conference area of the restored office complex. The Federal Police's GSG9, a specially trained anti-terrorist unit, is tasked with freeing the hostages. Enter the complex. Shooting clearance has been given." Gulp.

Minecraft’s Caves & Cliffs update has been (partially) delayed

Minecraft’s Caves & Cliffs update has been (partially) delayed

The huge Caves and Cliffs update for Minecraft revealed earlier this year has been partially delayed. Developer Mojang says the 1.17 update to the sandbox game will now arrive in two parts, with the first arriving this summer as originally planned, and the second being pushed back to the holiday season.

Mojang says it decided to split the update in two to ensure quality, manage technical complexity, and keep the development team healthy. Broadly speaking, players can expect to see some of the new blocks and mobs in the summer chunk of the update, while the more complicated parts that change the way world generation is done will arrive in the chunk scheduled for the holiday season.

"This update is huge, we are changing the very shape of the world in Minecraft," vanilla gameplay designer Henrik Kniberg explains. The new mountains and cave systems planned for the update require a change to the world height, and that introduces new problems to solve when it comes to Minecraft's performance. "There's just more going on when the world is higher," Kniberg says.

Crusader Kings 3 mods will soon be able to add in same-sex marriage

Crusader Kings 3 mods will soon be able to add in same-sex marriage

Last month's big 'Corvus' patch for grand strategy game Crusader Kings III introduced a host of free new features alongside the Northern Lords flavour pack, but it also had a surprising effect: mods that had allowed characters to take same-sex concubines stopped working. Paradox says this functionality will be returning soon, along with support for same-sex marriage mods, in upcoming patches.

In the latest developer diary, Paradox explains that same-sex concubinage was "unintentionally possible" to mod into the game prior to the 1.3 patch, but that due to some of Crusader Kings III's underlying code, this could lead to a "variety of errors." That led the team to restrict the functionality in patch 1.3 while it worked out a solution.

"Since then, we've made changes to properly support same-sex concubinage, and it will come alongside other modding improvements in 1.3.X," the dev diary reads. "Further, we plan to support same-sex marriage for mods in 1.4. Due to larger technical risks surrounding it, it was not feasible to include that in 1.3.X; we need more time to test it to ensure that this support does not introduce bugs in the vanilla game."

Stellaris’ 3.0 Dick patch isn’t even out yet, and it’s already been updated

Stellaris' 3.0 Dick patch isn't even out yet, and it's already been updated

If you haven't seen it yet, our Stellaris: Nemesis review is out, and the verdict is good. The new expansion - even though it really only targets the endgame - is one of the most meaningful released for the space 4X game to date. Between that and the free 3.0 'Dick' patch that will also be releasing alongside the DLC tomorrow, Stellaris could be on the cusp of a glorious new era.

Even though we're less than 24 hours from release, the 3.0 patch has already been patched to version 3.0.1. To be fair, the dev team at Paradox Development Studios did indicate in their 3.0 patch notes dev diary that they were already working on their first patch for the new update, they just weren't ready to talk about the details.

Seems they got everything together quite quickly because this week's dev diary highlights all of the changes coming in the 3.0.1 patch that will supersede the previously announced patch version. For anyone keeping track, this means we're jumping from 2.8.1 to 3.0.1.

Outriders missions guide – main quest list and all side quest locations

Want to know how many missions there are in Outriders? This looter-shooter has a fair amount of stuff to do before the all-important Outriders endgame - where all the best loot is - so it's only reasonable to want to know how far away you are from that point. It'll take the average player roughly 25-30 hours to finish the main campaign.

While the main missions are rather self-explanatory, there are a few different types of side quests available. Alongside the more traditional missions, there are also several wanted posters, bone piles, and historical trinkets to investigate - and doing so nets you some rather awesome rewards. Make sure you complete some of these at a high world tier to grab some valuable Outriders legendary weapons or even some Outriders legendary armor!

So if you need to know how many more missions you need to play before you enter the endgame, this guide will list every single main story mission, and just for good measure, every side quest location as well.

Cyberpunk 2077’s latest patch fixes some progression-blocking quest bugs

Cyberpunk 2077’s latest patch fixes some progression-blocking quest bugs

The latest Cyberpunk 2077 patch is out now, and it's a relatively minor one. Hotfix 1.21 is aimed at "further improving the overall stability" of the open-world game and "fixing the most common issues that could block progression," developer CD Projekt Red says. The bulk of the newly published patch notes cover the individual quests and open-world events that have been fixed in the patch, but the most impactful change probably will be improvements to Cyberpunk 2077's memory management.

CD Projekt Red doesn't get into specifics about the technical side of the patch, only saying that it's made "various memory management improvements" aimed at "reducing the number of crashes". Regardless of what exactly is happening under the hood, better stability is always a good thing, and hopefully this hotfix will help if you're still experiencing occasional (or frequent) crashes.

Most of the latest patch notes, as mentioned above, cover the specific quests and events that have gotten attention so as to prevent progression blocking. Several elements of quests like Big in Japan have been fixed - for instance, now you can get into Dennis' car from the right-hand side, and the car should spawn correctly - and some of the cyberpsycho sightings have been repaired so they don't keep you from progressing further.

Outriders Forgotten Chapel guide – how to unlock the secret side quest

Wondering how to access the Outriders Forgotten Chapel quest? There's plenty of content to sink your teeth into in People Can Fly's RPG shooter, and once you've finished the Outriders story missions, you'll probably want to whack up the difficulty and challenge yourself on higher Outriders world tiers in search of glorious loot.

Even when you think you've polished off the story, if you're just shy of 100% completion, there's a side quest you may have missed. This hidden side quest is called Forgotten Chapel, and completing it gives you a random legendary - fingers crossed that it drops one of the best Outriders Legendary weapons or Outriders legendary armor pieces for you.

This side quest is hidden away relatively late in the game, during the 'Sacrifice' mission that sees you explore the Canyon of the Grand Obelisk. The Outriders Forgotten Chapel quest is not repeatable - once you've got your legendary from the quest, that's your lot. If you want a legendary with better stats, it's best to wait until you can complete this quest on a higher world tier. Here's how to unlock the secret Outriders quest, Forgotten Chapel.

The best joystick for PC – take flight with these top sticks

Looking to sink your teeth into some of the best flying games on PC? It's not a genre that's exactly loaded with regular triple-A releases, but new plane games like Microsoft Flight Simulator keep the torch lit. So if your idea of a relaxing evening is a short haul flight from Fort Worth to San Francisco then you really owe it to yourself to own a joystick.

Of course, commercial flights are just one use - you could use a joystick for shooting down hostiles from your starfighter in Star Wars Squadrons, so picking up a dedicated joystick rather than using the best PC controller (you weren't trying to use the best gaming keyboard, right?) is a great way to improve your accuracy and immersion.

There are a lot of gaming joysticks to choose from. You could grab a simple all-in-one HOTAS controller which combines both the throttle and the flight stick, or you could go for a dedicated flight wheel with multiple instrument panels and a triplet of the best gaming monitors to create the ultimate flight simulator setup. The amount of cash you're spending on a flight sim setup can vary massively, so to ensure you've got all of the options we've rounded up the best pick for every price point and use.

Age of Empires fans already think the new United States civ is overpowered

Age of Empires fans already think the new United States civ is overpowered

Age of Empires 3's definitive edition just got its first major update since releasing late last year. As well as a new hefty balance patch, the United States has been introduced to the game as a new playable civilisation. You can get a full overview of what they offer on the official Age of Empires forums, but it's not even been 24 hours yet and already players are worried it's slightly broken.

The US in Age of Empires 3 gets some pretty interesting advantages over other civilisations. For starters, it begins with a 'book' crate, which gives it a head start on all the other civs towards 'aging' up. The civ also gets 'Immigration' cards instead of the usual ones that other civilisations get. These cards are drawn from the pool of all the other civs, meaning that you can claim some of the best bonuses from across the game.

Add its Gatling Gun – essentially the world's first machine gun on wheels – and you can see why the US is poised to become a powerhouse. We've already seen some early forum discussions on the United State's impact on the game, though some people seem mad simply because the new US civ exists.

Apex Legends new legend: when will we meet Valk?

As Apex Legends Season 9 approaches, so does the next Legend joining the Apex Games. Predicting which Legend will join the roster is always tricky to do as there are many unused character files hidden within the Apex Legends game files. Fortunately, the developers have dropped a number of hints over the past few months that could give us an idea of what to expect.

The prevailing theory thus far is that the next Legend to join Apex Legends is none other than Valk. Not much is known about this character other than the bits of information that have been data mined. Unlike a lot of the Legends, Valk is one of the few to have a complete character model at the ready. We also have an idea of what Valk's abilities are likely to be, though these have most likely been redesigned.

The introduction of Season 9's Legend will bump up the number of characters in the game to a whopping 17. Give our Apex Legends character guide a read if you haven't caught up with the battle royale game in a while. Here's everything you need to know about Valk, Apex Legends newest legend.

Diablo 2 Resurrected players figured out how to use other classes in the alpha

Diablo 2 Resurrected players figured out how to use other classes in the alpha

Diablo 2 Resurrected's first alpha has been and gone, giving us a glimpse of what Blizzard is cooking up for its remake of the fan favourite. The single-player alpha featured the first two acts in their entirety and gave you three classes to pick from: the barbarian, the amazon, or the sorceress. As ever, players fancied a different option and figured out how to use other classes outside those on offer.

Players on the game's subreddit note that Diablo 2 Resurrected's base game is by and large no different to the original. Blizzard has also previously explained that the game will have mod support and that the studio wants to keep things as intact as possible. Putting two and two together, it looks like players found that they could use an old, popular hero editor mod to swap their characters out. All you had to do was make a character, tell the editor that your barbarian is actually an assassin, and the rest took care of itself when you loaded in.

Someone even did an ability showcase for all the classes not present in the recent alpha, which we'll include below. It's worth pointing out, though, that these classes weren't intended to be in the alpha, so all of them are still subject to change, even if Blizzard is trying to preserve as much as possible.

Warzone new map – when is the nuke event in Warzone?

Want to know more about the new Warzone map? It looks like Verdansk, Warzone's first large-scale map is finally coming to an end when Season 2 finishes in April. Hardcore players know all about the nukes hidden within the Warzone bunkers, but they haven't been used since they were introduced to the battle royale game. Judging by the latest rumours, the nukes may be the key to Verdansk's revamp.

Raven Software and Infinity Ward, the game's developers, have made an effort to tie together the stories from the Cold War campaign, Zombies, and Warzone. Verdansk is based on Modern Warfare's campaign and is currently 37 years ahead of the Cold War timeline. There is a chance the next Warzone map will take players back in time to sync up all three modes.

The Season 2 Reloaded update didn't bring much to Warzone other than a few balance changes despite the file size being over 50GB. It looks like the latest update has been data mined, revealing plenty of new information about the new map. Here's everything we know about the new Warzone map so far.

Call of Duty Cold War and Warzone Season 3 – everything we know

Are you ready for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone Season 3? It feels like we've known about the biggest change to the battle royale game for some time now. The leaks have all but confirmed there will be a new Warzone map, but there's plenty of other things to look forward to.

Every season new weapons and maps are introduced to Cold War, and most of those weapons end up making their way to Warzone at some point in time. One of the biggest changes to both games in Season 2 came in the form of new weapons: the FARA 83, LC-10, and ZRG 20mm. These guns didn't make a huge splash in Warzone, but they've been used a lot in Cold War's multiplayer modes.

Zombies is also set to receive new content this season, most likely in the form of a new Outbreak map which could take the zombie fight over to Berlin. It's important to remember that all of the leaked content for Season 3 is unlikely to launch at the same time. The devs usually like to space out their content drops over the course of a season. Here's everything we know about Cold War and Warzone Season 3.

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands’ next update is on the PTR

Fancy giving World of Warcraft: Shadowlands' Chains of Domination update a spin? Now you can, as Blizzard has stuck it on the PTR for testing. The update went live in the wee hours of the morning here in the UK, with Blizzard providing a healthy serving of patch notes to fill you in on what it all entails.

You're getting to try out new covenant campaign chapters with 40 new renown levels to hit. There's also a new zone in the Maw to explore called Korthia. While you're there, you can try out some of the Archivist and Dreadlord quest lines or the Visitor dailies. You can also try out the new Maw Assaults or Tormentors of Torghast additions.

You'll have to wait a few days to try the Sanctum of Domination raid, though, as Blizzard isn't starting testing until April 16. When that day comes, you'll be able to test the Tarragrue and Guardian of the First Ones encounters. The raid itself takes place in Torghast, tasking you with swatting aside nine bosses before you get to take on the Banshee Queen.

The best Genshin Impact Rosaria build

The best Genshin Impact Rosaria build

Looking for the best Genshin Impact Rosaria build? The newest character has arrived in the Genshin Impact 1.4 update. She is a Cryo based four-star character, and is a rather powerful, frosty DPS dealer. Rosaria has been part of Genshin Impact for a while as an NPC, but she's now a playable character.

So what exactly is her deal? Well for one, she is a member of the Church of Favonius in Mondstadt, the big town with giant windmills you visit towards the beginning of Genshin Impact. She's also got a rather interesting definition of piety and seems somewhat selfish. She refuses to attend choir practice on the grounds that she finds it boring.

But as a fighter, this pale nun has some great skills and is perfectly capable of dealing all the Cryo-based Genshin Impact element damage you'll need. We're confident that Rosaria will be a great fit onto any team that needs some more Cryo damage; to get the most out of her icy skills, here's the Genshin Impact Rosaria build you should aim for.

Upcoming PC games 2021 and beyond

What are the best upcoming games to keep an eye on this year and the next? Hope, anticipation, agony, and elation - it's the endless cycle of emotions we go through during the annual PC release schedule.

Year in, year out, games - via Steam and otherwise - are produced in such varying degrees of quality that not a single one of them is destined for certain success. Masterpieces are released alongside utter disasters, series are born while others dwindle and, occasionally, a game actually lives up to our expectations.

So how can we possibly navigate the dizzying number of announcements, trailers, and teases to find which of the upcoming PC games we should devote our finite supply of hype to? Us old PCGamesN sages have been round the videogame block plenty of times already, so we're perfectly placed to tell you about the titles you should be saving your pennies up for. Below you'll find the upcoming PC games you should keep on your radar, as well as their expected release dates.

The best Genshin Impact Jean build

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 02:30 AM PDT

The best Genshin Impact Jean build

Looking for the best Genshin Impact Jean build? The leader of the Knights of Favonius is probably the second best Anemo character in the game, only outclassed by Venti (here are the best Venti builds in case you're interested). You do meet her as an NPC quite early into the game, but will need to spend money via the gacha mechanic to unlock her as a playable character.

Some heroes in Genshin Impact do one thing very well, but Jean has at least a couple of ways to help the party. Not only can she dish out the damage and inflict debuffs with her Anemo powers, but she can also keep the team nice and healthy. This ensures that they can take more risks when attacking tougher enemies.

So no matter if you're looking for a support build or a physical DPS build, Jean's main job is to heal all of the other characters in the party. This Genshin Impact Jean guide will have two builds that achieve both a DPS and utility role, as well as explain all of Jean's abilities and skills that she uses in combat.

More than 475,000 Call of Duty: Warzone accounts have been banned to-date

Talk of cheating is never too far away from Call of Duty: Warzone. Since February of this year, Raven Software has kept fans abreast of the ban waves it has been sending out. Since that initial blog post, we've had seven high-volume sets of bans, two coming this month alone. Now, though, The CoD team has posted another grander-scope update, telling fans that more than 475,000 accounts have been banned as of this very day.

"Cheaters are never welcome," the post reads. "To date, our security and enforcement team has issued more than 475,000 permabans in Call of Duty: Warzone. Yesterday's large banwave was our seventh high-volume set of bans since February. In addition, our security and enforcement teams also issue bans daily – seven days a week – to individual offences or repeat offenders. The combination of daily bans plus large-scale banwaves are an integral focus of our efforts."

The Call of Duty team goes on to explain that it's also tackling the commercial market of cheat providers and resellers, which includes suspicious accounts that are farmed and sold to repeat offenders. Just recently, the team banned around 45,000 fraudulent black market accounts.
