Valorant is going to start storing voice comms to moderate abusive behaviour

Valorant is going to start storing voice comms to moderate abusive behaviour

Riot has announced that it has updated its privacy policy across its online games to allow it to start storing voice communications data. Online multiplayer game Valorant will be the first to see the new system in action, as Riot says it's moving to start moderating voice comms to verify reports of abusive and toxic behaviour.

A report by TechCrunch provides some details about the voice moderation system Riot plans to implement. Audio data will be stored regionally, and then pulled when a report is submitted. Riot says the audio will be evaluated to check for code of conduct violations, and if one has occured, the player in question will have a chance to see it. Afterwards, the recording will be deleted. If no violation is found, the audio will also be deleted.

Riot told TechCrunch that the system for monitoring voice communications is still in development, and may take the form of a voice-to-text transcription system or possibly machine learning. Modulate's ToxMod software already has the capability to 'listen' to human speech and recognise specific words, phrases, or abusive language in general, and Riot may use a similar AI-driven solution in its voice moderation.

Halo Infinite PC devs are “fighting hard” against “intrusive DRM” and kernel-level anti-cheat

Halo Infinite PC devs are “fighting hard” against “intrusive DRM” and kernel-level anti-cheat

Halo Infinite comes out this year, and it's coming to both PC and Xbox. Microsoft's gaming division has offered a broad commitment to PC gaming for both players and developers this week, and as the stewards of Xbox's flagship, 343 Studios has done the same. In a big blog post, the devs break down many of the features that'll be coming to the PC version of Halo Infinite - and perhaps more importantly, they've confirmed a few things that won't be in the game.

"There's a ton of preventative problem-solving" in developing the PC version, producer Jeff Guy explains. "Things like making sure our game plays nice with specific families of hardware or fighting hard to ensure we don't add intrusive DRM to our game."

The crowd-pleasing philosophy applies to the game's anti-cheat functionality. Security engineer Michael VanKuipers says the team aims "to make cheating more difficult in ways that don't involve kernel drivers or background services. We've done a lot of work securing the Slipspace engine and developing novel ways to protect and change the game to slow down cheat development. When people do cheat, we're focused on catching them through their behavior and not from data that we've harvested from their machines."

No new content for Imperator: Rome in 2021 as Paradox reorganises

Paradox Development Studios has been going through some growing pains, and an internal reorganisation has left Imperator: Rome without many of its key team members. The developer has assigned its portfolio of grand strategy games across three internal teams, but Imperator has, for the time being, been left without a place to call home.

"Earlier this year, PDS has split into three distinct studios," writes Paradox segment and portfolio manager Bevan Davies in a post to the Paradox Forums. "Internally, we call them PDS Green, PDS Red, and PDS Gold. Each team is in charge of both maintaining existing game(s), and developing new games."

Green is handling Stellaris, and is supported by Paradox Arctic, based in Umeå, and is now led by Stellaris veteran Rikard Åslund. The Red team is heading up the development of Crusader Kings III, helmed by Johanna Uddståhl Friberg, formerly the studio manager of Paradox Arctic. Paradox Gold is handling Hearts of Iron IV under the leadership of Thomas Johansson, who has lately been working in upper management.

Titanfall 2 suddenly got massively popular on Steam, so now it’s free for the weekend

Titanfall 2 suddenly got massively popular on Steam, so now it’s free for the weekend

Titanfall 2 - one of the finest mech games ever made, and one of the best FPS games to boot - finally came to Steam last year with a bunch of other EA titles. Now, nearly a year later, it's just seen it's highest Steam player counts to date, and Respawn is celebrating its surge in popularity by throwing a free weekend.

You can pop over to Steam to play Titanfall 2 free until May 3 at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. BST. That means you've got just shy of three full days as of this writing to plow through one of the most exciting and innovative single-player shooter campaigns in modern history, and dip your stompy metal feet into the high-flying, mech-bashing world of Titanfall 2 multiplayer.

It's probably something you've heard again and again by now, but you really ought to play Titanfall 2. Yes, it's single-player campaign really is as good as you heard. There's wall-running, zip-cord grappling hooks, and a variety of huge mechs to hop into and wreak havoc with. But there's also a metric tonne of character and heart packed into its relatively brief runtime, which doesn't waste a second on letting you feel bored.

Nacon GM-180 wireless mouse review – a budget cordless option

Nacon GM-180 wireless mouse review – a budget cordless option

Nacon isn't a name you usually hear among the Logitech, Razer, and Corsair clickers, with the brand often prioritising the lower-end market. However, if your wallet can't stretch to our favourite budget wireless gaming mouse, the Corsair Harpoon RGB Wireless, the Nacon GM-180 still packs a punch while cutting the cord at less than half the price.

With a $19.90 / £18 MSRP, it's easy to overlook the GM-180 but it has all the makings of a good mouse for FPS games: an optical sensor, a 2.4GHz lag-free wireless dongle, 30 hours of battery life, and even some of that RGB goodness found on premium alternatives. As with any budget peripheral, there are also some compromises, with a lower 2,200dpi limit and no software to customise the four options you can toggle between.

Although its slender size makes it a fantastic companion to the best gaming laptop, it doesn't look out of place sitting next to the best gaming keyboard that costs five times its price. Its flat design is much more suited to a palm rather than a claw grip, although it lends itself well to both right- and left-handed gamers with its ambidextrous shape.

Here are the Destiny 2 Trials rewards this week

Bungie's pinnacle PvP activity is back in rotation, and if you're looking for details on the Destiny 2 Trials rewards this week, you've come to the right place. Before you start working your way up through the ladder, you'll want to know what you're actually working for - so here's a breakdown of what's available each week, and what map you'll be playing on.

If you're not familiar with Trials of Osiris, it's a weekly PvP challenge where you enter a competitive gauntlet of 3v3 elimination matches. Flight Simulator now has a working helicopter add-on

Flight Simulator now has a working helicopter add-on

Like most flight simulator games, Microsoft Flight Simulator was primarily designed as a platform for a specific kind of flight - namely, fixed-wing aircraft. You know, aeroplanes. While there are lots of different kinds of planes, they have enough in common that you can usually fit a bunch of them into the same sim. But it turns out that Flight Simulator is robust enough to handle other types of flight, too - and a developer has just released a new helicopter add-on that proves the point.

FlyInside is a developer that's created payware add-ons for flight sims like X-Plane and FSX, as well as its own VR flight simulator. Now it's managed to inject its helicopter flight model, originally developed for its own FlyInside Flight Simulator, into Microsoft Flight Simulator - and it's built a Bell 47 to go along with it. You may recognise it as the one from M*A*S*H.

HeliSimmer.com editor Sérgio Costa (who's also a product development manager at MicroProse) has some hands-on time with FlyInside's Bell 47, which he says is a convincing recreation of the distinctive chopper, down to its signature 'soap bubble' canopy.

Here’s where Xur is in Destiny 2 today – Beyond Light, but not beyond Xur

Here’s where Xur is in Destiny 2 today – Beyond Light, but not beyond Xur

Xûr is Destiny 2's Exotic gear merchant. He appears every weekend to sell the game's most coveted items in exchange for Legendary shards, but if you're a casual player with limited shards to spend, it can be hard to know which of his wares is most worth your investment. That's where we come in.

As of June 12, 2020, it appears that Xûr is back to providing random rolls - so the Exotic merchant is providing more excitement than he has in a long time. Xûr appears every Friday at 10am PST / 1pm EST / 6pm BST, and will stick around until the Tuesday reset. We'll update this guide shortly after he arrives, so if you're reading this, you need only read on to learn where he is, and which are the best items he's selling this week.

Now we're in Beyond Light territory, but Xûr's first appearances have been at the usual spots - so maybe don't expect too many surprises from the merchant in the new year of Destiny content.

Halo and Microsoft Flight Simulator “are equally important”

Halo and Microsoft Flight Simulator “are equally important”

Five years ago, at E3 2016, we spoke to Phil Spencer about the future of PC gaming. Arguably the most memorable thing about Microsoft's conference that year is how often the words "Windows 10 and Xbox One exclusive" flashed up on the stream. PC was clearly a huge focus for Microsoft at the time, so how's that commitment holding up five years later?

Xbox Game Pass for PC, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, new releases like Microsoft Flight Simulator, and upcoming titles such as Halo Infinite and Age of Empire IV - ignoring the ongoing graphics card shortage, now is an especially good time to be a PC gamer. And it's clearly paying dividends, as Microsoft has just revealed that Halo MCC has seen more than ten million players on PC in just over a year, many of whom are new to the series.

We speak to partner director, Jason Beaumont, and studio head of World's Edge, Shannon Loftis, about ecosystems, Game Pass library curation, and how Microsoft hopes to reach three billion people.

Mining Chia cryptocurrency with your SSD could void your warranty

If you've just splashed out on the best SSD for gaming and are looking to make a bit of extra cash by using it to mine the new Chia cryptocurrency, don't be surprised if your manufacturer refuses to bail you out should your SSD give up the ghost.

Chia is the new kid on the block, using your storage devices to mine cryptocurrency rather than graphics cards. This has already caused the prices of hard drives and SSDs to begin rising in China as stock runs thin, causing manufacturers to take action. Galax's Chinese store now shows a disclaimer box to customers, warning that it will refuse warranty claims on SSDs if there's evidence they've been used for Chia mining or other "abnormal operations" that cause much higher daily data write volumes than average.

Naturally, storage being maxed out for 24 hours per day to mine crypto is going to put massively increased strain on the components, so it's not surprising to see Galax implement a caveat. We expect to see more SSD brands announcing something similar in the coming weeks.

More MSI RTX 3080 Ti graphics cards are hitting distribution centres, ready for May

More MSI RTX 3080 Ti graphics cards are hitting distribution centres, ready for May

While Nvidia hasn't officially confirmed the existence of the RTX 3080 Ti, we're inching closer to its rumoured May 26 release date. This date's looking increasingly likely after Videocardz published photos of two boxed Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Tis - specifically MSI's three-fan, RGB-lit Suprim X model.

These photos indicate that the upcoming graphics cards have arrived at distribution centres, which usually happens just a few weeks before the release of new hardware, corroborating the reported late-May launch date.

The new GPU is expected to fill the price gap between its RTX 3080 and RTX 3090, and looks almost identical to MSI's current RTX 3080 Suprim X. The non-Ti model has dual BIOS allowing for two modes, whether that's full-performance or silent operation, and weighs in at just under a hefty 2kg with an included GPU bracket to stop any sag. It costs an extra $200 over the 3080's $699 MSRP, so you can probably expect its Ti sibling to follow suit, with an MSRP higher than its rumoured $1,200 asking price.

Football Manager has joined a social media boycott to protest online abuse

Football Manager has joined a social media boycott to protest online abuse

Social media feeds across English football are going dark this weekend, and that includes official Twitter accounts for Football Manager and its developers. It's all part of a weekend-long boycott of social media as professional players, teams, and our favourite football games demand change to how platforms combat racist abuse online.

"This weekend we are coming together with other sports and organisations, to boycott social media and demand change," the Football Manager Twitter account says in its latest post. In a linked post, Sports Interactive explains that it wants "to demonstrate our collective anger at the constant abuse on social media received by footballers and people in the game, as well as others across the world, which goes without any real-world consequences for perpetrators."

Specifically, the organisations joining the boycott want social media platforms to proactively filter and block messages that contain discriminatory abuse, making them effectively impossible to post on social media. They're also asking for more effective verification procedures, more severe repercussions for abusers, and better reporting tools.

Civ 6’s April patch brings welcome balance to a complex 4X game

Civ 6's April patch brings welcome balance to a complex 4X game

Last week, Firaxis released its biggest Civilization 6 balance patch to date. The April 2021 update includes significant changes to just over half the existing Civ 6 civilisations and adds new combat units. It also introduces new cultural domination incentives, huge Earth and True Start Location maps and even a feature allowing scouts to pet their dogs. For the most part, fans have welcomed these changes, though some fussy Redditors had hoped for more.

The patch, billed as the final free update of the New Frontier season pass, addresses many of the most common complaints. Combining player feedback and data-driven analysis, Firaxis has sought to give the 4X game a face lift.

The result shows what it means to really end on a high note. The patch injects new life into several formerly weak civilisations while nerfing others many considered overpowered. The new units offer more options for early- and mid-game combat - critical stages of the game. Overall, the update refreshes aspects of Civ 6 that would otherwise have become stale in the wake of the New Frontier Pass.

Hearts of Iron devs and former CEO speak out against toxic feedback in EU4 drama

Hearts of Iron devs and former CEO speak out against toxic feedback in EU4 drama

If you've been paying attention to Paradox's grand strategy games this week, you'll have noticed that Europa Universalis IV just received its own expansion and free update. The Leviathan EU4 DLC adds new mechanics that allow you to play 'tall', whereas the free 1.31 'Majapahit' update attempts to give some fresh content for indigenous tribes across the map.

Neither update has worked out quite as well as was intended. In the three days since it launched, several bugs and major issues have been reported - including being able to cancel AI monument building  - along with some major balance issues. The expansion is officially Steam's worst-rated launch ever, and a 1.31.1 hotfix was quickly released.

Sadly, players are now directing hatred towards not only Paradox as a company, but also specific members of the development team at Paradox Tinto, the new studio formed in Barcelona that's now in charge of EU4's development. Other teams within Paradox Interactive's umbrella have noticed and voiced their own concerns regarding toxicity and feedback, specifically the Hearts of Iron devs.

Dress your PC gaming keyboard up like the classic PlayStation console

Nothing makes the best gaming keyboard pop like custom keycaps, giving your setup a splash of personality compared to the dull black husks you're usually lumped with. If you're into the retro aesthetic, accessories vendor Omnitype has something nostalgic in the works with its Dualshot 2 range, which will let you dress your gaming keyboard up like the classic PlayStation console when it launches next month.

Omnitype's GMK Dualshot 2 keycap set and the Dualshot 2 cable are predominantly grey, with dashes of colour reminiscent of the 26-year-old platform. Despite the name being a direct nod to the Dualshock controller, the colours take after Sony's original PlayStation logo, with red, green, blue, and yellow instead of the square button's pink.

Instead of focusing on the US ANSI layout, like most custom keycap makers do, Omnitype has covered virtually all bases and will offer the GMK Dualshot 2 keycap set in both standard and international layouts, as well as including Katakana keycaps, letters with accents, macros, and other additional. It won't come cheap, though, even if these are ABS keycaps, costing as much as a brand new keyboard at $119.99.

The best Genshin Impact builds for each character

The best Genshin Impact builds for each character

Looking for the best Genshin Impact builds? Genshin Impact characters are obtainable through banners, which give you a chance to pull various characters and weapons through Wishes. Some characters are more powerful than others - as our Genshin Impact tier list will attest - but no matter who you pull, we're here to help you get the best performance out of them.

When putting together a Genshin Impact team, you'll need to take into account Genshin Impact elemental reactions - each character specialises in the use of one particular element, apart from the Traveler, who is able to wield both Anemo and Geo. Swapping your teammates out and using different elements in sequence produces powerful effects, so we recommend using a varied lineup.

Some characters are best suited to damage, while others perform better in a support role - depending on the build you choose, you can capitalise on different aspects of their toolkit to help them serve your team better. In order to buff your characters, you need to equip them with Genshin Impact artifacts and Genshin Impact weapons. You can also upgrade your character's Constellations, but this requires obtaining a duplicate of that character from a Wish. Here are the best Genshin Impact builds for each character:

Genshin Impact tier list: the best and worst characters

There are currently 32 Genshin Impact characters available, so there's no shortage of candidates for your dream team. But with so many different weapon, elementals, talents, ascension bonuses, and constellations upgrades, finding your favourites can be challenging.

In truth, it is difficult to find a truly bad Genshin Impact character. While base stats and elemental abilities are important, the value of a character also depends on personal playstyle, available weapons and artifacts, and team composition. So don't worry too much if your favourite character is on one of the lower tiers; you can still make it work with our recommended Genshin Impact builds.

In general, being on the highest tiers mean that the character is the best in their role, is not too difficult to build, and performs well regardless of teammates. Being on a lower tier means that there are better alternatives, or the character needs a very specific build or team to shine.  Just to note, the characters are not ranked within their own tier, and with that out of the way, let's take a look at our ranking of characters in our Genshin Impact tier list!

The best Outriders mods explained

The best Outriders mods explained

Want to know more about Outriders mods? Unlike most loot in the game, it's not completely obvious how mods work. In Outriders you can attach any mods that you have dismantled from old weapons to make weapons and armour even more effective, which is key to optimising your build.

Mods are simply just great perks that come with looted gear, but even the most lowly of gear can make your class skills more potent. Some provide better stats, but others can decrease your class skill cooldown, or better yet, give you additional uses for your skills. Players were unable to utilise mods in the demo, but that certainly isn't the case in the full game.

Here are all of the Outriders mods that we've found in the game so far. In this guide, you'll find all of the weapon mods, which can be applied to all classes, and every single class-specific armour mod that you can find to bolster your skills and stats, or give you unique buffs. Let's begin with how to find mods in the first place.

Civilization 5 leaders – a guide to the best Civ 5 civs

Which are the best Civ 5 civs and leaders? A classic 4X game by any measure, Civilization V allows you to guide your nation from inception to world domination in any way you see fit. Providing one of the broadest list of victory conditions in any strategy game, Civ 5 can be slightly challenging when trying out new things.

Civ 5 civilisations are slightly more niche than in the newer Civ 6, creating a clear focus that allows specific nations and specific Civ 5 leaders to achieve their chosen victory condition more easily. There are also more strategies not tied to specific win conditions as well.

In order to help our readers get better at the game and figure out the best way to achieve their goals and desired play styles, we built this guide to single out the best Civ 5 civs for a range of play styles. Below each entry, you'll also find a summary of what they do best. Alongside this, we've also included their unique faction ability, and how it affects the game. That will hopefully make your game a better experience, and allow you to have much more fun with it.

GTA 3 speedrun undone by series of horrific odds

GTA 3 speedrun undone by series of horrific odds

All it takes for a speedrun to come crashing down is one moment of error or bad luck. For one Grand Theft Auto speedrunner, however, it proved to be the latter. Content creator English Ben was attempting a run that would have seen him complete Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas in succession but was undone by something that only has a 30% chance of happening. That's bad enough, but then it happened another eight times (thanks, Kotaku).

The speedrunner needed to hijack an ambulance in Grand Theft Auto 3 as part of his run. He had made a mistake previously, so he set up a particular glitch to put things back on track. Any car with a toggle-able side mission would have worked, but the ambulance was close by, so it made sense. English Ben explains that the vehicle only has a 30% chance of being locked, too, so you would have thought the odds would've been in his favour.

The speedrunner then takes an intentional death to respawn the ambulance before the run peters out after a few failed attempts to hijack the darn thing. English Ben was then left to keep trying it to see just how bad his luck was. He works out that the odds of the events in this speedrun are 1/15242, or 0.0066%.

Best M4A1 loadout Warzone

Best M4A1 loadout Warzone

While the obvious answer to this question is that the best M4A1 loadout in Warzone is largely subjective, we're pretty certain that the M4A1 class and setup we've got is the best all-round build for the popular AR. This weapon is great for newcomers as it features a modest amount of recoil alongside an impressive time to kill speed.

The weapon meta has been reset in Warzone Season 3, forcing players to reconsider their assault rifle options. The M4A1 is slowly becoming a viable option, offering everything you need for the battle royale: accuracy, range, a fast rate of fire, and the potential to strap on a 60-round magazine. Given the number of players on Verdansk, you'll want to equip yourself with as many bullets as you can.

Of course if you're new to Warzone or Modern Warfare's multiplayer then we're afraid that you'll need to do a lot of grinding to earn all of the attachments that really make this rifle so powerful. The M4A1 setup for Warzone we've got below offers decent damage per second over mid to long-range fights, without making the gun unwieldy in close-up gun battles.

The best Genshin Impact artifacts guide

What are the best Genshin Impact artifacts? It's not long into Genshins Impact that you discover artifacts, but figuring out what to do with them and what the best artifacts for your build are is another matter entirely. There's a lot to learn in miHoYo's new open-world action game, but luckily Paimon is around to show you the ropes of the new world you've woken up in.

Artifacts are equippable items and each character can have up to five artifacts that will increase their stats and give them special bonuses. There are different tiers of artifacts, with main stats ranking either three, four, or five stars - with sub stats ranking from one to five stars. As a general rule of thumb, the higher the ranking, the better the artifact. But, it's not just a case of having the best artifact - you need to consider your character build as well.

Artifacts affect a lot of character stats including healing bonuses, damage output. HP, and critical hits - so you want to select which artifact you equip wisely. There are also five different types of artifacts that fall into sets, giving you even better perks from equipping artifacts in the same set.

The best Warzone M13 loadout and class setups

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:36 AM PDT

The best Warzone M13 loadout and class setups

What is the best Warzone M13 loadout? The M13 is often overlooked in Call of Duty's battle royale as it can lack some punch over long distances and is slightly less effective than the best CR-56 AMAX loadout and the best Grau Warzone setups. However, the M13 is a machine in close and mid-range battles, with next to no vertical recoil and a rate of fire that makes up for its low damage per shot rating. On top of this, it's also very mobile and quick to aim down sights with.

It's harder to quantify, but the M13 simply feels good to use in Warzone – provided you don't try to kill snipers with it. Shooting from long distances with the M13 works well enough, but you won't be able to down enemies very easily unless they have already lost their armour. In order to get the best out of this underutilised AR, we've put together our pick of the best M13 attachments for the dream Warzone M13 loadout.

For this setup we've tried to maximise the aim down sights speed, improve the range and recoil further, and ensure it still has all the essential features of the best Warzone guns, namely a suppressor and big magazines. We also have an alternative M13 class setup that features a short range optic and slightly better handling stats.
