Nier: Automata is finally getting a patch on Steam

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 10:10 AM PDT

As much as I adore Nier: Automata (degree: a lot), I cannot deny the PC version is a bit bum and has been since it launched four years ago. It's daft that we've had to use a fan-made fix to run it in the correct resolution or stop cutscenes stuttering. Square Enix did us dirty. But oh my giddy aunt, the stars have aligned and today they finally announced an "upgrade patch" for the post-apocalyptic RPG's Steam version. Presumably with the fixes from the recent Microsoft Store edition?

The Weekspot podcast #033: Enoch great, Enoch terrible

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 10:00 AM PDT

Ever since the demo failed to wow people back in February, it was pretty clear that Outriders had a ceiling. Not an outrageously low ceiling, but a ceiling nonetheless. Still, even with launch issues a lack of anything extraordinary, it's actually a pretty decent video game.

Preview: the Elite Dangerous Odyssey FPS expansion is best when you're not shooting

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 09:00 AM PDT

There's a Vulture circling overhead. Not a scavenger bird, but the somewhat larger Core Dynamics Vulture. Its engine reverbs across the moon's surface as it boosts off into orbit, ignoring me. I'm not worth the hassle. My Sidewinder, the trash-tier space banger of Elite Dangerous, is parked quiet and unoccupied on the edge of a huge meteor crater. I'm out for a walk, you see, with the long-awaited space legs of the upcoming Odyssey expansion. Not everything is smooth and picturesque in this ongoing public alpha. Despite that, it's gratifying to boot up your favourite space-trucking game and find not just a walking simulator inside, but a moon-walking simulator.

It all begins tonight with the Second Chance mode, in which each player will get to instantly respawn once per match.

There's a new batch of AMD Ryzen 5000 CPUs on the way

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 08:35 AM PDT

AMD have announced six new additions to their family of Ryzen 5000 CPUs today, including their first pair of budget-focused Ryzen 3 chips. Based on the same Zen 3 architecture and 7nm manufacturing process as their existing Ryzen 5000 CPUs, the Ryzen 5000 G-Series will also come with integrated Radeon graphics chips capable of delivering "smooth 1080p gaming" without the need for a dedicated graphics card. However, if you were hoping to bag yourself one to tide you over until GPU prices start getting back to normal, you may be disappointed, as they're only going to be available in pre-built OEM systems at launch.

Ubisoft ending online services for Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and more

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 08:31 AM PDT

As they do every so often, Ubisoft have announced they're ending online support for another round of games this year. The latest games condemned to lose online services include Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. This is on top of the server shutdowns Ubi announced earlier this year, which included Far Cry 2 and Anno 1404. It especially stinks because Vegas 2 multiplayer has been broken for months, so players can't even give it a proper send-off.

What The Dub is a Jackbox-esque party game where you dub daft dialogue over old movie clips

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 08:26 AM PDT

If there's one thing I've actually enjoyed during the last year of lockdowns, it's been how much more frequently I hop into online party games with my pals to mess around. That's probably why I'm drawn to What The Dub. It's a multiplayer game where players watch clips of strange old B-movies, then replace a bit of the script with some even more bizarre lines to try and make your mates laugh. Undoubtedly, this will turn into everyone trying to make the characters say incredibly vulgar things, but truly, what else are these sorts of games for?

I want more games to redefine what 'survival' means

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 07:30 AM PDT

I think we can generally agree that one of the main functions of video games is wish fulfillment. They let you believe you might not only be a powerful and competent person, but also the most powerful and competent person in the universe (and if that is not the case, why do Bethesda games even exist?). And, that being the case, survival games occupy a strange twilight world for me. I really wish I was good at them, because I really like the idea of most survival games.

I can barely survive my actual life when that includes sitting in a nice warm flat eating roasted, salted cashews from a bag that was sealed by a huge and complex robot the size of a warehouse, that was created specifically for the bagging and sealing of roasted, salted cashews. So pretending that I would, if I got stranded on an island or survived an apocalypse, be at all capable of doing anything other than lie down and wait for death to come to me is pure power fantasy. Except, I am very bad at most survival games.

This video game teaches you how to use Git repositories

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 06:14 AM PDT

It's easy to feel like a super wizard class hacker once you learn a little programming. You're writing wee apps, you're scripting this and that, you're surely mere days away from seeing the world in Matrixvision. And then you have to use version control software, and your dreams and confidence are crushed. Fortunately, helpful people have made a game to help teach the arcane workings of the Git distributed version control system. It turns commands into friendly cards, and each level uses an actual real Git repository. Is it helpful? I will confess, even the thought of Git as a game made me nervous. But I like the idea of Oh My Git!

Of Love And Eternity's demo is an unsettling wander with good noises

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 05:42 AM PDT

I'm a sucker for games which have undead knights as their main protagonists, and especially those which thrust you into underworlds filled with horrible creatures. Enter Of Love And Eternity's alpha demo, which not only ticked both these boxes, but impressed me with its noises. Trust me, the sounds are great.

Somehow, 'Medieval Tinder' makes Crusader Kings 3 feel more believable

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 05:00 AM PDT

One of the many things I love about the Crusader Kings games is their ability to maintain a relatively consistent tone when, strictly speaking, they should be all over the place. These are, after all, games about the acquisition of power. They model the full range of monstrous things which people are prepared to do to each other to get it, and they don’t shy away from the consequences.

But then, these are also games where spymasters can plot to murder themselves, and where a horse can become Pope. For all the thrill of forging a dynasty over the course of six centuries of roleplaying, there’s no denying that some of the finest moments in Crusader Kings come from those times when things get silly.

Final Fantasy XIV patch 5.5 arrives with new story quests and Nier raid finale

Posted: 13 Apr 2021 03:54 AM PDT

The wait is over: Final Fantasy XIV's servers are back online, and patch 5.5 Death Unto Dawn has landed. This update serves as the mid-point between the game's previous expansion, Shadowbringers, and the upcoming one, Endwalker (which will arrive sometime this autumn). It brings new story bits that lead directly into Endwalker, alongside the next part of the Nier-inspired raid, YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse. On top of that, FFXIV has added new quests, balance changes, New Game+ updates and more.

Have You Played... Don't Starve Together?

Posted: 12 Apr 2021 11:30 PM PDT

I hadn’t played Don’t Starve before, despite it being a thing I knew about for quite some time. I just never fancied getting into it as I often get frustrated with survival games I’m not immediately good at (read: all of them).

When some Stardew Valley bug problems ruined some lockdown date nights though, Don’t Starve Together was recommended to me on some internet list as one to try out, and what a recommendation it was.

Become a viking wizard with this Valheim mod Skyheim

Posted: 12 Apr 2021 03:12 PM PDT

Valheim already has its own sort of magic with the forsaken powers you get from each boss, but if you're more into to slinging fireballs around you may want to try out Skyheim. This mod adds runes that you can craft with loot from bosses and dungeons. Summon a light instead of carrying a torch. Scorch a forest full of Greylings with your fire. Oh, and teleport yourself back to your bed at will. It sounds pretty powerful, but chucking fire and ice around sure looks like a good time.

A Roblox roleplayer scammed their way into real White House press briefings

Posted: 12 Apr 2021 02:15 PM PDT

What does it take to get your questions answered during the White House press briefing? Less than I'd have imagined, apparently, thanks in part to Covid-19 protocols. A player in a Roblox political roleplay group managed to invent a journalist persona for themselves that was good enough to fool their supposed colleagues and have their questions asked to White House press secretary Jen Psaki multiple times. They seemed like legitimate press corps questions, too. Power to the players, apprently.

Epic spent $444 million to secure exclusive games for their store in 2020

Posted: 12 Apr 2021 12:10 PM PDT

Epic Games have been working to carve out a larger space for themselves in digital distribution of games for multiple years now. They've made exclusivity deals with tons of games, which they plan to do a lot more of, and have been offering free games as an incentive to customers, which they've yet to stop doing either. That all costs money, naturally, and some new court documents from Epic's ongoing legal battle with Apple dig into just how much. Epic committed $444 million to securing exclusive games in 2020, meaning they'll almost certainly be spending even more on this year's deals.
