Creeper World 4 is a triumph of consistency Posted: 14 Apr 2021 10:51 AM PDT Consistency. That's the word that comes to mind. It's one to use carefully when talking about a sequel. I'm prone to criticising games, particularly long-running series, for iterating gradually rather than taking bigger chances. I've bemoaned Tropico's rehashes. I've whinged about everyone copy-pasting XCOM to a fault. I've sent guys to show GTA a picture of Saints Row before throwing it through a window. But here's Creeper World 4, quietly releasing at the end of 2020 in an already busy month. I can't say anything about it is revolutionary, or even drastically different to the rest of the series. And yet I become utterly engrossed every time I play it. Again.
Vermintide 2's next free update adds a roguelike mode Posted: 14 Apr 2021 10:37 AM PDT The cooperative ratmasher Warhammer: Vermintide 2 already has some degree of change and surprise across runs, with different enemies in different places, but it's about to go squig-wild. Developers Fatshark have announced the free Chaos Wastes update will launch next week, introducing a new mode with roguelikelike runs. Squads will set out on expeditions, fighting through a random selection of levels, picking up gear and buffs along the way, and risking a return to base if they wipe.
Minecraft's Caves & Cliffs update is getting split in two Posted: 14 Apr 2021 10:37 AM PDT The next major update to Minecraft is a biggun, so big that it's now getting split in two. Mojang have announced that due to technical complexity and number of changes they have planned for the Caves & Cliffs update, it will now roll out in summer and holiday releases. The 1.7 update was previously expected this summer, which will now be focused on adding new blocks, items, and creatures. The winter release will include the big world generation changes that add new cave types, mountain types, and increasing the world build height.
Dragon Age 2 writer says a 'Snyder Cut' would make the city bigger and more alive Posted: 14 Apr 2021 09:10 AM PDT Since the release of the infamous Justice League 'Snyder Cut' last month, it's been fun having a think about what games should get a big indulgent revamp, and what those hypothetical revamps would look like. Former Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider has been pondering exactly that on Twitter, revealing a load of things he would've liked to change in the most polarising game in the series, Dragon Age 2. Unfortunately, none of his ideas involve fewer spiders.
Smite developers Hi-Rez Studios are offering permanent remote work Posted: 14 Apr 2021 09:05 AM PDT When game developers started packing up last spring to work from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I suspect we all knew it was going to be a bumpy ride. Sure enough, there have been game delays galore over the past year as many studios found the adjustment to be a challenge. On the bright side, some seem to have really taken to it. Hi-Rez Studios, the folks behind Smite and Paladins, say "the pandemic has taught us new ways to work that we believe are superior to our previous way of operation." They'll be encouraging 80% of their 435 employees to work remotely if they choose to.
I haven't played Nioh 2 in a while, and I'm scared to go back Posted: 14 Apr 2021 09:01 AM PDT I played brutal action-RPG Nioh 2 religiously for weeks. If I had a controller in my hand, more often than not, I'd be fighting a horrid demon for the umpteenth time. Then I just stopped for no real reason - other than maybe because other games came out and I wanted a break? I don't know. But what I do know is that I'm genuinely scared to boot Nioh 2 up again. My mouse has glanced over it numerous times, but I've bailed at the last second. I get this overwhelming feeling of, "I am totally disconnected from this world", and I think I've finally identified what it's called.
What does the future hold for RPGs? Posted: 14 Apr 2021 07:35 AM PDT A question that crosses my mind from time to time is why there aren’t more horror RPGs. Certainly, RPGs are more than capable of generating psychological terrors, and horror games are as popular as they’ve ever been. But outside of a handful of classics like Sweet Home, System Shock 2, and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, it remains a fairly under-developed area within the genre. I posed this question to veteran developer Brian Mitsoda, who has a long history of working on unique RPGs like Alpha Protocol, having most recently been the narrative designer for the seemingly ill-fated Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2. Mitsoda replied. “When it comes to RPGs, [executives] are going to look at what is the most popular genre for RPGs. And what is the most popular genre for RPGs? It’s fantasy. [...] If your RPG is just focused on horror, it’s probably going to turn off a lot of RPG fans. They’re going to go back to something that’s more comfortable.”
Cyberpunk 2077's patches can't fix its biggest problems Posted: 14 Apr 2021 06:30 AM PDT When a baby is about six months old they're often able to sit up on their own, are eating solid food, and might even have their first tooth coming in. Cyberpunk 2077, the current boxed-cat of games in that it's simultaneously the world's most and least favourite action RPG, is now at that same developmental stage, with its second meaty patch (1.2) having arrived at the end of March. There was even a new hotfix this very day! So I have been playing it to see what kind of a big fat cyber-baby it is now. And the answer is: mostly the same baby it was before, just working better.
Cyberpunk 2077 has patched more quest-blocking bugs Posted: 14 Apr 2021 05:59 AM PDT Following Cyberpunk 2077's huge patch 1.2 at the end of March, CD Projekt Red today followed-up with the hotfix patch 1.21. This is a smaller update, focused on improving stability and fixing crashes as well as addressing some bugs which stopped certain quests from progressing. Every little helps.
Posted: 14 Apr 2021 05:21 AM PDT Last year, Activision filed to trademark Warzone, the name of their popular Call Of Duty battle royale. However, an indie developer behind a browser-based strategy game that's also called Warzone sent a cease-and-desist to stop them. Fast forward to this year, and Activision have filed a lawsuit to declare that the two games couldn't possibly be confused, and the indie Warzone dev has started a GoFundMe to raise enough money to fight the publisher in court. Strap in, this one's a tad messy.
Oculus Quest 2 is getting official wireless PC support Posted: 14 Apr 2021 04:24 AM PDT Oculus Quest 2 owners will soon be able to say goodbye to their cumbersome Oculus Link cables to play VR games on their PC, as Oculus have announced that the standalone virtual reality headset is getting official wireless PC support via their new Oculus Air Link tech. The new feature will be introduced as part of their upcoming v28 software update, and will be available first as an experimental mode before its full release later this year.
Valheim's Necromancy mod lets you command a band of skeletons Posted: 14 Apr 2021 04:06 AM PDT In almost every game which asks me to choose a class, I'll pick the one which lets me summon something. This is because I am lazy, and I like watching something else do all the work for me. Valheim have classes, but there's now a mod which adds a necromancy skill with the ability to summon a group of skeletons. So that's me sorted, then.
Primordia devs go to a terrible carnival with Strangeland in May Posted: 14 Apr 2021 03:09 AM PDT A few years later than planned, Primordia developers Wormwood Studios are returning with a new murky adventure game. Their Strangeland will launch on the 25th of May, publishers Wadjet Eye announced yesterday, inviting players into a surreal and nightmarish carnival with far too many awful clown faces for my liking. Have a peek in the trailer below.

Microsoft Flight Simulator's world update 4 polishes France and Benelux Posted: 13 Apr 2021 03:38 PM PDT Microsoft Flight Simulator was no slouch at launch, but since release its developers have been been applying extra polish to its world map country-by-country. World update 4, out now, brings that extra detail to France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg - including new photomagicry of two major cities and three new hand-crafted airports.
Subnautica Below Zero's cinematic trailer shows icy dangers Posted: 13 Apr 2021 02:31 PM PDT Subnautica: Below Zero has been in early access for over two years, and the underwater survival sim follow-up is approaching its final release date next month on May 14th. To mark that looming date, developers Unknown Worlds have released a cinematic trailer which gives a brief introduction to some of the creatures that will terrify you in the murky deep.
Satisfactory update 4 is out, adds hoverpacks and particle accelerators Posted: 13 Apr 2021 01:43 PM PDT One of my favourite memories from the past 15 years of doing this daft job was at EVE Online's fan fest. A developer on stage in a packed auditorium announced a more efficient way to move items between cargo holds, and the crowd around me erupted with "We just won the World Cup"-level cheering. This is what Satisfactory's update 4 trailer reminds me of. Today's update adds hoverpacks, drones and particle accelerators to the factory building game, but it feels like it's a set of street lights turning on at the end that would get the biggest cheer.
Mass Effect's graphical remaster is more than lens flare - but does it look better? Posted: 13 Apr 2021 01:17 PM PDT Mass Effect: Legendary Edition has the tough job of upgrading the visual appearance of games originally built to run at 720 or 1080p on an Xbox 360. That's a mammoth task even if it was just one game and not the entire Mass Effect trilogy. A new trailer and blog post on the remaster's official site breaks down how BioWare went about upscaling 30,000 textures, and shows exactly how the results look.
