Luigi’s Mansion is now Mario’s Mansion, thanks to a ROM hack

Luigi’s Mansion is now Mario’s Mansion, thanks to a ROM hack

Modders have been making the world of PC gaming a better place for decades now, and they've been making the world of console gaming while PC gaming just as cool. A new ROM hack for Luigi's Mansion has arrived that does the thing you'd expect any modder to have taken care of - it turns the game into Mario's Mansion.

It's a full conversion that swaps Mario in for Luigi's character model, and traps Luigi in the prison painting. It properly replaces the dialogue text to refer to Mario, and it swaps out all of Luigi's voice clips for Mario samples. It even swaps around little details like star colours, dialogue icons, and more to make the transition look seamless.

You can pick up the hack over on Romhacking.net courtesy of modder Nintendo 64 Wizard, though, of course, you'll need to provide your own copy of the original game for it to work. It only works on emulators, not original hardware, so you'll need to make use of something like Dolphin to play it.

Biomutant patch lets you turn off the narrator

Biomutant patch lets you turn off the narrator

PCGamesN writer tells you that a new Biomutant patch is here. Says it addresses many of the topics the devs mentioned last week, and does a big upsy on the good thing finding. Says that the tutorial is more exciting now, and a toggle for the motion goopies has been added. Most importantly, he says there's now an option to turn off the narrator's translation.

...okay, no, I won't make you read an entire article like that. Biomutant's narrator is sometimes charming, but generally a bit much. New options in the menu let you hear only the gibberish speech while you read the dialogue, or only hear the narrator with no gibberish, to get the dialogue moving faster. There's also a bit less gibberish before the narration when you stick with the default option.

Besides the narrator settings, there's now a slider for motion blur intensity. There's also been a broad rework for loot so that you'll get more stuff appropriate to your level, less junk from high-level containers, and fewer random healing items.

Dark age city-builder Going Medieval looks like a hit on Steam

Dark age city-builder Going Medieval looks like a hit on Steam

Going Medieval looked like a charming take on the 'games like Rimworld' genre when we saw it last month - which, hey, is there actually a name for that genre yet? I'm not actually sure 'city-building games' is right, but it's a similar vibe. Either way, Going Medieval has entered Steam Early Access, and it's already proving a hit among the audience on Valve's platform.

As of this post, Going Medieval is currently the top-selling game on Steam, ahead of games like GTA 5, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, and fellow new releases like Necromunda: Hired Gun and the 1.0 version of Griftlands. The metrics of the Steam top sellers chart are always a bit nebulous, so we just know that for some stretch of time today, Going Medieval was outselling those other games. We'll see how Going Medieval ranks on the full, weekly top seller chart this weekend.

Going Medieval has already reached a concurrent player count of 6,107 just a few hours after launch - not bad for a small-scale game. More importantly, the early reviews are quite effusive, and the game already sits at a 'very positive' rating.

Tell Me Why is free to keep in June to celebrate Pride

Tell Me Why is free to keep in June to celebrate Pride

Episodic adventure game Tell Me Why is free throughout the month of June as developer Dontnod celebrates Pride. Now through June 30, you can add all three chapters to your Steam library for free, and Dontnod says it hopes players will instead spend the money on causes and businesses that directly benefit the trans and queer communities.

Tell Me Why is the story of twins Tyler and Alyson, who can use the power of their supernatural bond to solve mysteries - not the least of which is their own upbringing in a small Alaskan town. Together, they share a fantasy world called The Book of Goblins, and the game's three episodes take you through their memories of growing up together and present choices that will ultimately shape their relationship with each other.

Tell Me Why took top honours at the GLAAD Awards earlier this year, beating out contenders like Hades and Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Dontnod worked with GLAAD during the development of Tell Me Why in order to make sure its portrayal of Tyler, a trans man, was sensitive and authentic.

Nvidia releases the RTX 3080 Ti, leaked benchmarks place it close to the RTX 3090

Nvidia's Computex presentation isn't just about unveiling ray tracing and DLSS support for a bunch of games, but announcing its long-rumoured RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti ahead of their respective June 3 and June 10 release. Usually we'd have to wait a bit longer to see what benchmarks these graphics cards pull in, but Videocardz has already picked up on leaks that are circulating on Chinese social media website Bilibili.

The RTX 3080 Ti's specs sit pretty close to the RTX 3090, with the only glaring difference being 12GB of video memory wrapped in a $1,199 / £1,049 price tag instead of 24GB for $300 more. The size of the card is much more in line with the standard RTX 3080, though, forgoing the 3090's behemoth cooler so it can fit in the best gaming PCs.

Like its power hungry sibling, the RTX 3080 Ti also requires a 750W+ power supply. It guzzles around 350 watts of power with the same 12-pin connector as the other GPUs in its series, but don't worry, Nvidia provides an adapter so there are no compatibility issues.

Blood Bowl 3’s closed beta starts this week, and you can register to join

Blood Bowl is a bit like American football, if the players were occasionally allowed to eat each other. The Blood Bowl III release date is now going to be sometime in February 2022, but there are going to be some opportunities to play the violent Warhammer-themed football game well before then.

While the full release will see Blood Bowl III take to the field on consoles, PC players will get to jump into Early Access on Steam beginning in September. Publisher Nacon hasn't said yet how much of the final game will be included when Early Access begins, but when it does launch next year you'll be working with a roster of 12 teams, each with its own pitch and cheerleaders, plus both single- and multiplayer modes.

If the fall still seems like too long to wait, don't fret! A closed beta kicks off this week, running June 3-13. To register, head to the official site and join the waiting list. You'll need to provide a name, date of birth, info on whether you're familiar with Blood Bowl or not, and your preferred platform. After registering, you'll just have to wait for an email invitation to play.

Humble’s June Choice games include Civilization 6 Platinum Edition

Humble’s June Choice games include Civilization 6 Platinum Edition

The June Choice bundle from Humble is now available, and the headline game is none other than Civilization VI, one of the best 4X games on the market. That's not all, though - this is the platinum edition of Civilization VI, which includes the Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm expansions as well as six civilization and scenario DLC packs.

The June Choice bundle is $12, and along with Civilization VI, it includes social horror game Secret Neighbor, Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse, Worms Rumble (with the Legends Pack DLC), startup-themed roguelike game Going Under, Panzer Paladin, Milky Way Prince - The Vampire Star, zombie survival game Desolate, Ikenfell, Paw Paw Paw, Effie, and Disjunction.

With no disrespect intended to the rest of the games in this month's bundle, it's safe to say the Civilization VI Platinum Edition is the Big Game for June. The Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm expansions both made exciting changes to the established Civilization formula, and they're necessary for playing many of the best Civ 6 mods.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis release date set for next week

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis release date set for next week

June 1, 2021 Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis officially launches on June 9.

While Phantasy Star Online 2 finally made its way to English-speaking audiences earlier last year - officially, anyway - the original game launched in 2012 and wasn't especially impressive-looking even then. Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis aims to change that, and now we know exactly when it's going to launch.

The Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis release date is set for Wednesday, June 9. (That's one week from now, as of this update.) The usual Wednesday maintenance will be pushed forward by "one or two days" to accommodate the release, and the details of the Road to New Genesis Event will change ahead of the launch - though the devs haven't revealed exactly how they're changing just yet.

New Genesis won't replace standard PSO2, but it looks like Sega is hoping players will start to transition over. Log-in bonuses for PSO2 will end as they're introduced for New Genesis.

The Borderlands movie reveals a plot synopsis and a first look at Cate Blanchett’s Lilith

The Borderlands movie reveals a plot synopsis and a first look at Cate Blanchett's Lilith

There are a lot of great games like Borderlands around but none as popular or beloved as the original, which is why it's not a shock that the Borderlands movie is such an enticing prospect for fans - despite the bad reputation other movies based on FPS games have. Nevertheless, the Borderlands movie is on its way and fans have now been treated to their first look at Lilith.

Lilith has been a major character in all the Gearbox-made Borderlands games, and she'll be portrayed by Cate Blanchett in the Eli Roth-directed movie. The shot of Blanchett as Lilith is in silhouette but it certainly looks like the veteran Vault Hunter. Purportedly, the shot was actually taken by none other than Halloween's Jamie Lee Curtis, who's playing the slightly unhinged Dr. Tannis in the film.

Along with this shot of Lilith (which you can see in full below), Lionsgate has also revealed the first plot synopsis for the movie. Seemingly set some time after the events of the first game, Blanchett's Lilith will be the main character and will find herself drawn back to Pandora "to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramirez)."

Warframe’s new Sisters of Parvos and their alien dogs will hunt you down

Warframe's new Sisters of Parvos and their alien dogs will hunt you down

The next big update for Warframe is nearly here, and along with the reveal of the new warframe, Yareli, developer Digital Extremes has also lifted the lid on the main focus of the update: the Sisters of Parvos, the new Progenitor-based enemies after Kuva Liches, who will even send their killer alien dogs after the player.

As revealed in this month's devstream, the player will be able to create their own unique Sister of Parvos adversary after completing a specific mission and donating a Zenith Crown to the Granum Void. Parvos Granum will then pop up with a bit of ominous expository dialogue and spawn one of the new Sisters, which the player should be able to finish off quite quickly if they're careful - at least this time, but it won't be so easy the next time.

While players search for Requiem mods in order to face their Sister on the Orbiter, just like with Kuva Liches they'll have to face the Sister's allies that have been sent out to kill the player. However, instead of Kuva Thralls, the Sister of Parvos sends out an alien hound, which will be more difficult to kill - but more rewarding.

The whole Crysis trilogy is getting a remaster, and it’s coming out this fall

The whole Crysis trilogy is getting a remaster, and it’s coming out this fall

We'll refrain from making the inevitable "can it run Crysis" reference here, but following on last year's Crysis Remastered, Crytek and Saber Interactive announced that they're doing remasters of FPS games Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 as well. The three single-player campaigns will be available this fall as The Crysis Remastered Trilogy, and as individual titles as well.

The series begins on a chain of North Korean islands, where a straightforward rescue mission quickly devolves into a desperate struggle against an invading force of alien drones. In Crysis 2, the action shifts to New York, where the aliens have begun their efforts to wipe out the human race. In Crysis 3, New York has been transformed into a giant terrarium, where jungle plants have reclaimed much of the city beneath an impenetrable nanodome.

Throughout the series, you wear a special nanosuit that gives you superhuman abilities in combat: enhanced speed, cloaking, and armour boosts are just the beginning of what the suit can do. As an early showcase of the CryEngine, Crysis was a true test of PC gaming hardware available in 2007.

The new Battlefield game is getting revealed next week

The new Battlefield game is getting revealed next week

You're getting a look at the new Battlefield game real soon. EA has posted on Twitter that the reveal is set to happen June 9 at 7am PDT / 10am EDT / 3pm BST, which sets it among the cavalcade of reveals and announcements we're getting at E3 this year.

News of a reveal has been coming for a while now. EA took to Twitter back in April to assure fans that an official reveal is coming "soon", with the development team "in daily playtesting mode right now: polishing, balancing, and making the best possible Battlefield game [it] can". We also got some other snippets of information from Dice general manager Oskar Gabrielson in an accompanying blog post.

"I can tell you it is a bold step. It has everything we love about Battlefield – and takes all of it to the next level," Gabrielson said. "Epic scale. All-out military warfare. Crazy, unexpected moments. Game-changing destruction. Massive battles, packed with more players and mayhem than ever before. All brought to life with the power of next-gen consoles and PCs."

EPOS takes on Razer, Blue, and HyperX with its very first gaming microphone

EPOS takes on Razer, Blue, and HyperX with its very first gaming microphone

EPOS is known for its headsets, earbuds, and amplifiers, but is now expanding into gaming microphones with its newly announced B20 - and it looks quite promising. Our EPOS H3 review discovered that it's the best gaming headset if you want a quality microphone built in, so if the B20 keeps some of the H3's DNA, we could be looking at one of the best gaming microphones.

At $199 / £179, it's not a budget option, exceeding the price of high-end models such as the $169 / £159 Blue Yeti X and the $159 / £159 Elgato Wave:3. It'll need to offer more than those two to become a top choice, but with a ringed aluminium desk stand, it's already one of the nicest looking options you can go for.

Just like its rivals, it's a condenser microphone that can switch between cardioid, bidirectional, omnidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns. It has an LED light for the microphone, switching between white and red so you know when it's muted, as well as the option to mount it to a tripod if you need to free up space on the best gaming desk.

Far Cry 6 has “something else” in store for players once the story is over, Ubisoft says

Far Cry 6 has “something else” in store for players once the story is over, Ubisoft says

Ubisoft is teasing that players will be able to continue Far Cry 6 after the conclusion of the story, which would be a first for the Far Cry series, despite being one of the best FPS games around. Anyone choosing to return to the island of Yara after the story is over will apparently find "something else" that'll keep the game dangerous, so players won't have to load a save from before the final battle to continue the game.

This is according to lead game designer David Grivel, who was interviewed by Jordan Van 'JorRaptor' Andel. The interview isn't available yet, but Jordan has posted several snippets from their chat on YouTube, including these first details on Far Cry 6's post-story content.

When asked about what players should expect following the story in Far Cry 6, Grivel says, "what we want you to have is to feel like, okay, you know what, you've completed the campaign, fantastic, but now, ah, there's something else." Grivel also suggests that more will be revealed in the coming weeks, such as at the Ubisoft Forward event at E3 on June 12.

Minecraft ray tracing: how to get the SEUS shader

Looking for the Minecraft ray tracing shader? Real-time lighting effects are a highlight of high-fidelity games like Battlefield V and Metro Exodus, but they're also available in the chunky world of Minecraft. A modder has created a ray tracing shader for use in the classic building game.

Okay, so it's not ray tracing, exactly – technically, the rendering method modder Sonic Ether uses to create real-time global illumination in Minecraft is called path tracing. The difference is that path tracing uses rays that bounce many times throughout a scene, but the effect is similar to that of ray tracing: gorgeously-lit and shadowed scenes, even in something as simple-looking as Minecraft.

The results are pretty astonishing: beautiful beams of sunlight angle through a glass ceiling onto a shiny reflective floor, and a torch gives off a realistic warm glow in the second. You almost forget that you're looking at Minecraft. Here's what you can expect from Sonic Ether's shader and how to get Minecraft ray tracing through this impressive pack, and what we know so far about the version of the mod that doesn't require an RTX graphics card.

Everyone's replaying Far Cry games following Far Cry 6's reveal, just not the original

Just last week Ubisoft gave us our first proper look at Far Cry 6's gameplay and a lot of new details, such as how players can command a tiny dachshund in a wheelchair to bite an enemy's scrotum off. Following this big reveal it seems fans are in the mood to play some of the best FPS games around again, as Steam player counts have spiked for all the Far Cry games... with the exception of the original game, it seems.

According to Steam Database, the player counts for all of Ubisoft's Far Cry titles have seen a significant upturn in players following the Far Cry 6 reveal. Concurrent players for Far Cry 5, for example, have jumped from the previous high last month of 3,786 players to a massive 15,139 yesterday, and it's only going up.

Far Cry 4, likewise, has gone from around 831 players on Steam to 3,067, and Far Cry 3 went from 706 players to 3,428 almost overnight. The newest non-numbered entry, Far Cry: New Dawn, received a smaller but still noticeable increase from 533 players to 1,661.

Ex Civilization dev’s 4X game Old World fully launches on the Epic Games Store next month

Ex Civilization dev’s 4X game Old World fully launches on the Epic Games Store next month

You don't have too long to wait to get your hands on Mohawk Games' historical 4X game Old World. The developer has revealed that the upcoming PC game is fully launching on the Epic Games Store on July 1, almost one year after hitting early access in May 2020.

This one is set in classic antiquity and comes from Civilization IV lead designer Soren Johnson. You select a historical leader and work to establish dominance over the other nations. That's done by settling on new lands, snatching wealth and resources, and - naturally - taking down foes. Keep in mind, though, that leaders only get one life, so you'll be leaving each nation in the hands of their heirs if you let a leader perish on the battlefield.

While you duke it out for supremacy, you can take advantage of Old World's Orders resource, which lets you command your units as you see fit, so you're not limited to moving each unit once per turn. You're also getting a flexible multiplayer offering, with asynchronous, play-by-cloud, and hotseat modes, as well as team games, scenarios, and a variety of turn speeds and styles on offer.

HP completes its acquisition of HyperX and will keep it business as usual

HP completes its acquisition of HyperX and will keep it business as usual

June 1, 2021 HP has completed the acquisition of HyperX and reassured us that "there are no planned personnel changes."

It looks like HyperX is changing hands, with HP set to acquire the gaming peripherals brand from the current owners at Kingston Technology for a whopping $425 million. The deal is set to complete in the first half of 2021 depending on what regulators have to say, but has already been described as a "definitive agreement" between the two companies.

HP's tried to crack the gaming peripheral industry for quite some time, but while its Omen brand has ushered in some of the best gaming laptops, peripherals bearing the name are often overshadowed by more established brands like Razer, Logitech, and Corsair. On the other hand, HyperX's Cloud series regularly tops our best gaming headset list, and the HyperX QuadCast S is the best gaming microphone for streaming with its customisable RGB lighting.

Building upon HyperX's range of critically acclaimed accessories will put HP in a better position come 2024, which is when the "global peripherals market is expected to grow to $12.2 billion" and gaming peripherals should take the lion's share.

Humankind could be the best 4X game, but has one big problem to fix

Humankind could be the best 4X game, but has one big problem to fix

I've had the privilege of playing Humankind four times now. The first press demo was almost a year ago, and was followed by the Lucy and then Victor OpenDev sessions. On this latest occasion, the game build includes the Industrial Era for the first time, and I'm very excited to try it out.

As I embark upon another journey through history, I notice that the Neolithic Era feels much better. There are far more 'curiosities' - Humankind's collectible resource caches, equivalent to Civ VI's tribal villages - to chase, which lends a greater sense of purpose and attainment to this phase of the game. The bounty of resources also means it's easier to multiply my tribe, and I soon have a horde of little people wandering around.

Your tribe grows like this until you settle and found your first city, thereupon beginning the Ancient Era and the no-really-it's-been-brilliant concept of civilisation. It's possible to delay this, swarm all over the map, and overwhelm early rivals in a carpet of tribes - I rebuff the green AI as it tries to expand, boxing it into a peninsula - but presumably there will also come a point where it's in your interest to settle before those rivals build a lead in technology that you can't catch.

AMD’s DLSS rival arrives later this month for both Radeon and Nvidia graphics cards

AMD’s DLSS rival arrives later this month for both Radeon and Nvidia graphics cards

While Nvidia is doubling down on its Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) tech by announcing that the feature is headed for Doom Eternal, Rainbow Six Siege, and Red Dead Redemption 2, AMD's answer is just around the corner. The company took to Computex to unveil that FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) will debut on June 22, and it'll come with four presets.

Currently, DLSS is what makes the RTX 3080 the best graphics card money can buy, provided you can navigate the ongoing stock issues. It renders the on-screen image at a lower resolution before using machine learning and AI to upscale it to what's known as the 'ground truth' image. This reduces the overhead and makes ray tracing and 4K resolution a lot more accessible, and even helps you boost fps on the best gaming laptop where performance might bottleneck.

Nvidia's solution uses physical tensor cores that are exclusive to RTX GPUs. Conversely, FSR is open source and doesn't require specific hardware, opening it up beyond the Radeon RX 6000 series to include previous generations as far back as the RX Vega lineup.

Far Cry 6 release date: everything we know about the new Far Cry

When is the Far Cry 6 release date? Far Cry 5 was one of Ubisoft's best performing releases in 2018, and while the New Dawn spinoff didn't garner as much attention or acclaim, it was only a matter of time before the publisher returned to the beloved FPS series and now, after a number of leaks, Far Cry 6 has been officially announced.

Far Cry is a franchise that's grown from relative obscurity into one of Ubisoft's most bankable hits. The series has taken us across the globe, battling evil (and occasionally good) on tropical islands, across Africa, the Himalayas, and even in the US, with spin-offs and DLC pitting the player against aliens, cyborgs, and even yetis. Now we'll be travelling to the fictional Caribbean island of Yara amid civil unrest and a revolution following decades of economic sanctions.

What else do we know about Far Cry 6? Well, thanks to a shiny new trailer and some pretty screenshots, a fair bit, as it turns out. Here's everything we know about Far Cry 6 so far.

This Red Dead Redemption 2 mod features some of Red Dead Online’s best items

For all the hustle and bustle that Red Dead Online offers, some would prefer to go about their business alone. If that's you, then this Red Dead Redemption 2 mod may be of some interest.

A group of modders has created Red Dead Offline, which aims to bring "all the good stuff from Red Dead Online to single-player". Downloading it allows you to access goodies from various vendors in the western game. Modder LMS notes you could use a trainer to access the items, though they've made sure to make everything fit in naturally so you can have a better experience.

You'll also find that special weapons from multiplayer are unlocked from the start, though they're only available from select merchants to ensure their availability fits in with story progression. For example, you'll find the Navy Revolver at the gunsmiths in Saint Denis alongside the Elephant Rifle. Lowry's Revolver and the Bolas, meanwhile, can be picked up at Fences. There's more on the way, too, as LMS says the team has plans to expand the mod.
