| Sonic the Hedgehog is Freddie Mercury’s therapist in Two Point Hospital now Posted: 30 Jul 2021 02:08 PM PDT Is… is that Sonic the Hedgehog sitting in a therapy session with late Queen vocalist Freddie Mercury? Why yes, yes it is. Wacky medical management game Two Point Hospital is helping to celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog's 30th anniversary by adding a selection of Sonic character costumes, which creates the opportunity for some pretty surreal moments. As part of the celebration, Two Point Hospital is also free to play on Steam for the weekend. You can download and play from now through August 2, and the base game is available for a 75% discount if you decide you want to keep going after that. You'll also be able to dress up your staff as Sonic, Amy, Tails, and Knuckles, which we strongly suspect is not allowed in real hospitals, because it would stress employees out. Fortunately, you have some helpful new items to place in your care facility as well: some Sonic arcade cabinets in the break room to help them relax, for example. There's also a giant Sonic statue and a big gold ring. |
| People are finally playing Avengers, now that it’s free Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:58 PM PDT Avengers is a solid game. I gave it 7/10 in our Avengers review, and was looking forward to sticking with it - and then, well, everybody stopped playing. But suddenly, the game's concurrent player counts on Steam have broken free from the sub-1,000 daily peaks they've suffered over the past year. All publisher Square Enix had to do, it turns out, was make the game free-to-play. Temporarily, anyway. Avengers currently has a free, all-access weekend scheduled to last until August 2 at 9am PDT / 12pm EDT / 5pm BST. Today, on the second day of the promotion, the game reached 7,829 concurrent players on PC, as SteamDB shows. That's the game's biggest number since launch month, and the first time since launch that the concurrent player count has exceeded 3,000. The game's also 40% off right now, so if you want to keep playing after the free period is over, the price is down to $23.99 / £17.99 / €23.99. | Retro sci-fi RPG Encased set to launch in September Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:29 PM PDT Get ready to head into the Dome, because old-school sci-fi RPG game Encased now has a release date. You'll be able to start your adventure into Encased's alt-universe version of 1976 when it launches on Steam on September 7. Encased takes some inspiration from Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's Roadside Picnic, the science fiction novel that heavily influenced the Stalker series. As was the case in Stalker, in Encased you'll be venturing into a dangerous 'zone' to search for artifacts and alien technology. Here, it's a massive sealed structure called the Dome. Once you enter the Dome, you can't leave. Instead, you'll have to navigate between the five powerful factions that have formed inside. Encased promises multiple approaches to each situation: talk or bribe your way out of fights, join one of the factions, or go your own way. You can recruit companions to fight alongside you - or not. With its unique '70s retro-future aesthetic, Encased looks like a refreshing and quirky take on the classic turn-based RPG genre. |
| The best PC games to play on the Steam Deck Posted: 30 Jul 2021 01:11 PM PDT Valve's Steam Deck pre-orders should start shipping in December, giving you plenty of time to get your collection of games sorted in preparation. Of course, it's not going to be as powerful as a gaming laptop or PC, so we've rounded up the games most suited to the device in its handheld form - particularly ones that scale well with the device's small 7-inch screen and boast PC controller support for the Steam Deck's built-in controls. We haven't seen any benchmarks of the custom Zen 3 and RDNA 2-based APU, but Valve says the Steam Deck should be able to run most PC games at a minimum of 30fps at the screen's native 800p resolution. We'll still have to wait and see whether it can handle the most demanding games, such as Cyberpunk 2077 or Microsoft Flight Simulator. You'll be able to easily install Windows onto the device if the built-in Linux OS isn't to your liking, granting you a much larger library of games. For that reason, we've also included some games that won't be playable out of the box, until you install a Windows OS. Whether it's a game that can occupy you for a few minutes, or one that keeps you entertained on the longest flight, the Steam Deck looks like it has the pixel-pushing power to keep you entertained. | Stronghold: Warlords’ next AI lord is Kublai Khan, who enjoys life’s finer things Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:22 PM PDT Medieval RTS game Stronghold: Warlords continues its glorious march through its post-launch content plans. Hot on the heels of a new patch that fixes numerous bugs (including several pesky castle wall issues), Firefly Studios has revealed its Summer and Autumn roadmap. You can expect two big updates in the next few months, and one of those will be the addition of the new AI lord Kublai Khan. Grandson of the legendary Genghis Khan, Kublai Khan was the fifth ruler of the Mongol Empire, and lived from 1215 - 1294. In Stronghold: Warlords, Firefly says he'll behave similarly to Genghis Khan - the major difference between them being Kublai Khan's preference for expensive things. The armies he fields will be mainly built around imperial troops, and he'll demonstrate his royal privilege through his in-game taunts. Kublai Khan will be accompanied by an all-new castle design as well as "fresh strategies to outthink and armies to outmanoeuvre," Firefly says. He'll also feature in six new missions that introduce two new warlords, and this mini-campaign will follow Kublai Khan's military exploits in China, rather than his ventures to Korea and Japan. Before you start working your way up through the ladder, you'll want to know what you're actually working for - so here's a breakdown of what's available each week, and what map you'll be playing on. If you're not familiar with Trials of Osiris, it's a weekly PvP challenge where you enter a competitive gauntlet of 3v3 elimination matches. | Ubisoft employees call on management to “properly acknowledge our demands” Posted: 30 Jul 2021 12:55 PM PDT Ubisoft has come under fire in the past for alleged discrimination and harassment at the company. Following the lawsuit against Activision Blizzard over similar issues, employees of Ubisoft issued an open letter accusing the French megapublisher of not doing enough to address the issues. CEO Yves Guillemot argued that the company had "made important progress over the past year" in his own statement to employees, but workers say that response misses the mark. "We want to say that we have read and acknowledged the public response from Yves tonight," the new letter from Ubisoft employees says. "It seems, however, that the majority of our demands were sidelined and few of our points have been addressed." To that end, the workers raise three demands. First, "Stop promoting, and moving known offenders from studio to studio, team to team with no repercussions. This cycle needs to stop." They also ask for "cross-industry collaboration, to agree to a set of ground rules and processes that all studios should can use to handle these offences in the future. This collaboration must heavily involve employees in non-management positions and union representatives." | Five reasons to be excited for space 4X game Galactic Civilizations IV Posted: 30 Jul 2021 10:17 AM PDT Galactic Civilizations is making its return next year with Galactic Civilizations IV. A lot has changed in the space strategy game arena since the third game's release in 2015, and this sequel is pulling out all the stops to offer a new vision of Stardock's popular 'Civilization-in-space' DNA. There's a long road to launch ahead, but Stardock is opening up the game for feedback with early access that will let you jump into the action today. The alpha build was just updated to version 0.45, with a whole host of new content and tweaks based on the feedback the company has received already. If you're adopting the 'wait-and-see' approach, we can respect that. In the meantime, we've put together a quick article on five of the most exciting aspects of Galactic Civilizations IV, and Stardock's vision for the space 4X genre. We don't know about you, but these already have us fairly pumped. RELATED LINKS: The best 4X games on PC, The best turn-based strategy games on PC |
| Here’s where Xur is in Destiny 2 today – Beyond Light, but not beyond Xur Posted: 30 Jul 2021 10:13 AM PDT Xûr is Destiny 2's Exotic gear merchant. He appears every weekend to sell the game's most coveted items in exchange for Legendary shards, but if you're a casual player with limited shards to spend, it can be hard to know which of his wares is most worth your investment. That's where we come in. As of June 12, 2020, it appears that Xûr is back to providing random rolls - so the Exotic merchant is providing more excitement than he has in a long time. Xûr appears every Friday at 10am PDT / 1pm EDT / 6pm BST, and will stick around until the Tuesday reset. We'll update this guide shortly after he arrives, so if you're reading this, you need only read on to learn where he is, and which are the best items he's selling this week. Now we're in Beyond Light territory, but Xûr's first appearances have been at the usual spots - so maybe don't expect too many surprises from the merchant in the new year of Destiny content. | Halo Infinite’s multiplayer looks like a great re-entry point for lapsed fans Posted: 30 Jul 2021 09:50 AM PDT I've drifted away from Halo over the years. Once upon a time, I'd come home from school and dip into Halo 3's myriad multiplayer and custom map options with friends as part of a set routine. I'd only deviate and actually see someone in person on the weekends - when we'd plough through the campaign in couch co-op. I checked in here and there to see how the series was going under 343 Industries' care, enjoying what I saw but never feeling inclined to stay. Will Halo Infinite - which you can pre-order here, coincidentally - tempt me to commit this time? With the multiplayer technical test having only just gone live, it's too early to say - but it's off to a good start. Halo Infinite's multiplayer already feels wonderfully simple. While the beta is a tad limited as you're only playing against bots in Slayer on a new map called Live Fire, that's enough to enjoy the rhythms and the kinetics of it all. You spawn in with your battle rifle, pistol, and grenades, free to dart towards a better weapon or into a gunfight with the other team. After a few games, I find myself repeating a trick: running right from spawn to pick up a cloaking device so as to flank the opposition. It's a fuzzily nostalgic throwback to a tactic I used to employ in previous Halos. RELATED LINKS: Halo Infinite release date, Halo Infinite E3 2019, Halo: The Master Chief Collection PC |
| The best Genshin Impact Yanfei build Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:43 AM PDT After the best Genshin Impact Yanfei build? This four-star Pyro Catalyst wielder is part of the Genshin Impact 1.5 update and arrives as part of the Zhongli banner. Although she's squishy, paired with the right party and the best DPS build, you can maximise her Pyro damage and ensure she stays alive. Yanfei is the top legal expert in Liyue Harbor, fully versed in every area of the law, also known as the "law that walks". She also shares a mysterious connection to another new Genshin Impact character, Eula. She's part illuminated beast, similar to Ganyu, and generates scarlet seals, which decrease her stamina consumption, when using normal attacks or her elemental skill and elemental burst. You can check out her full abilities below. The scarlet seals can be used to increase her charged attack's area of effect and damage output, so although there's nothing particularly outstanding about Yanfei's stats, positioning her as DPS, alongside shield characters such as Diona and Zhongli, will help you get the most out of her. Let's take a look at the best Genshin Impact Yanfei build. RELATED LINKS: Play Genshin Impact for free, Genshin Impact character tier list, Genshin Impact leveling guide |
| The best Genshin Impact Fischl build Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:30 AM PDT Looking for the best Genshin Impact Fischl build? Fischl is a mysterious adventurer who travels alongside her night raven named Oz – the pair have worked hard to become one of the Adventurers' Guild's top investigators. As a bow-user and Electro character, Fischl is one of the most versatile characters in the game, earning her a high spot on our Genshin Impact tier list. Electro is arguably the best element in the game for causing Genshin Impact elemental reactions, and Fischl can activate these reactions without even being on the field. Fischl can summon Oz in the middle of combat to deal Electro damage for her. Once set up correctly, Oz can remain active on the field for long periods of time, leading to plenty of elemental reactions. This is extremely powerful since Genshin Impact 1.6 as this update included a buff to the Swirl elemental reaction, causing even more damage to nearby enemies. Fischl's versatility means she can play in a damage dealing DPS role, or in a support role to set up as many elemental reactions as possible. Given the amount of quality DPS characters in the game, we've gone for a support build as Fischl can take powerful characters to new heights. Here's everything you need to know about how to create the best Genshin Impact Fischl build. | Valheim’s Hearth and Home update will add more options for gold hoarders Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:12 AM PDT If you've been playing the Viking sandbox game Valheim for a while, chances are you've amassed a good bit of gold in your travels. When the Hearth and Home release date arrives, you'll finally be able to show off all that loot - the update will be adding a bunch of new features that let you flaunt your wealth like a Norse Scrooge McDuck. In the latest Valheim monthly development update, Iron Gate provides a peek at the new gold hoarding features coming to the survival game in the months ahead. Gold coins will be able to be placed in the new coin stack and coin pile, which glitter invitingly wherever they're placed. There's also a new treasure chest on the way, where you'll be able to store valuable items and supplies. All this filthy lucre needs to be secured, of course, and so Iron Gate is adding a new iron grate to build as a doorway into your treasure chamber. That way, visitors to your extremely fancy fortress will be able to look, but not touch. Iron Gate suggests you may even consider building cells to lock up captured greydwarfs, but we can't recommend this kind of cruel behaviour. | Where to find the Memento Lens in Genshin Impact Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:11 AM PDT Do you want to know where the Memento Lens is in Genshin Impact? This quest chain seems to be confusing a lot of players, as it's not very clear where to find the Memento Lens in Inazuma. Genshin Impact 2.0 is by far the biggest update to the game yet, introducing a whole new region, and brand new characters like Ayaka, Yoimiya, and Sayu. There's also new bosses to fight like Baal and the Perpetual Mechanical Array. This quest chain contains a number of new Genshin Impact characters that are almost guaranteed to return when more story quests are revealed. The Inazuma region is known for its Electro properties - the Traveler gains a brand new set of abilities as the Electro Traveler when they visit the Statue of the Seven. Unlocking the Memento Lens can be confusing, so we've broken down every step to ensure you don't get lost throughout the long mission. In order to begin this mission, you need to have already started the Sacrificial Offering quest. Here's how you can find the Memento Lens in Genshin Impact. | Samsung’s new DDR5 RAM chips could give single-stick capacities of up to 768GB Posted: 30 Jul 2021 07:29 AM PDT DDR5 RAM will find its way into gaming PC builds later this year when Intel Alder Lake arrives, although most people will be sticking with similar capacities to the current sets of best gaming RAM. We heard earlier this year that Samsung was working on a mammoth 512GB DDR5 stick, but it looks like even larger capacities could be on the way, after it announced that it's developing a new 24GB module that'll be able to fit up to 768GB onto a single stick (via Tom's Hardware). Sticks of this capacity are currently extremely overkill for gaming, not to mention a price tag that'll make it more suited for server and enterprise rather than consumer use. The development is still great news for gamers, however, as these new 24GB chips could also be used on less-expensive consumer RAM sticks, allowing for much higher memory amounts than is currently possible. Looking back to the early 2000s, your average PC had less than 1GB of memory. Now that a typical gaming PC has over 16 times that, it's not implausible that your average PC will have a memory capacity stretching into triple figures in the future. | Patron is a medieval city builder with a new spin on social dynamics out next month Posted: 30 Jul 2021 07:27 AM PDT Patron is an upcoming city-building game that puts a nifty new spin on how social dynamics work that's due to come to Steam in just over a week. Previously showcased with a demo at this year's Steam Next Fest, the game meshes the staples of the city builder genre with a "unique social dynamics system" that means you'll need to be very finely attuned to the whims and wants of your settlement's people. As a survival city builder, Patron will see you gather and produce resources to create your town and then build it up to make it the best, most prosperous town it can be. Set in a new land rich with goodies to gather, the game gets you to construct your settlement's buildings - homes, farms, production plants, manufacturing bases, and "dozens of other[s]" - to house your people and get 'em harvesting and producing. Where Patron's own twist comes in is in how you balance the delicate social issues that will arise from those people's own distinct perspectives, needs, and desires, which can come into conflict with the decisions and actions you make as you go. | Halo Infinite – everything we know about character customisation Posted: 30 Jul 2021 06:54 AM PDT Want to know more about the character customisation options in Halo Infinite? Unlike the other entries in the Halo series, Halo Infinite's multiplayer mode is free to play on Xbox and PC. The devs have decided to take the same approach as some of the most popular battle royale games, focusing on cosmetics to bring in money rather than relying on game sales. As a result, you can expect to find lots of character customisation options in Halo Infinite when the game officially launches later this year. The only way to acquire new items to customise your spartan armour with is through the Halo Infinite battle pass system. In most games, battle passes typically have an end date, but that won't be the case in Halo Infinite as they're permanent. Customising your spartan armour has always been part of the Halo games, but these systems pale in comparison to what's offered in Halo Infinite. Everything from helmets, shoulder pads, and even knee pads can be altered and equipped this time around. Here's everything you need to know about the character customisation options in Halo Infinite, including what pieces of armour can be altered, what armour cores are, and more. | Dragon Age 4 release date – all the latest details about the new Dragon Age Posted: 30 Jul 2021 08:44 AM PDT Dragon Age 4 is real and in production at BioWare, we know that much. But what when is the Dragon Age 4 release date? Where will the story go next? And which of our favourite characters will return? While BioWare may be tight-lipped about the sequel to Inquisition, a few pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that is their next fantasy RPG are already floating around the internet. So far we've had a cryptic teaser trailer about the Dread Wolf, suggestions of a potential multiplayer angle, and heaps of clues to its story contents courtesy of various interviews and tweets with developers and writers who have worked on previous Dragon Age games. And yet, EA and BioWare are insistent on keeping the game's title and release date under wraps… for now. But, as we'll explain below, the most likely Dragon Age 4 release date is 2022. Join us as we attempt to pick all of that information apart and figure out what kind of game the series' fourth instalment will be. Each entry has been drastically different from the one that came before it, so expect plenty of speculation down below. Here's everything we know about Dragon Age 4. |
| Microsoft releases its most stable Windows 11 preview yet, ready for your gaming PC Posted: 30 Jul 2021 06:05 AM PDT Up until now, if you wanted to get Windows 11 on your PC before its official release later this year, the only insider program for the new OS was the 'dev channel'. Microsoft acknowledges this channel has some rough edges and stability problems, so it perhaps wasn't the best idea to install this build on your primary PC. However, the company's been busy ironing out the bugs reported in this channel, now opening up the beta channel for the latest preview build, which looks like it should offer a much smoother and more stable experience. If you've already been using the dev channel to access early Windows 11 builds, Microsoft says "now would be the right time to consider switching to the beta Channel if you want to stay on more stabilised builds of Windows 11". There are many changes coming with this latest build, such as the removal of a bug that caused Windows Explorer to crash, UI improvements, and reworked animations in the Microsoft Store. Of course, being a beta, it's worth noting that it's still not entirely bug free, even if it's a big improvement over the builds we saw in the dev channel. | The best Crusader Kings 3 mods Posted: 29 Jul 2021 07:55 AM PDT Crusader Kings 3 mods are flying as the game nears the one year mark since release. Turns out people are not only keen to play Crusader Kings 3, they're keen to mod it to high-hell and back again as well. If you're on the fence about buying it, we found it to be a great entry point into the complex world of grand strategy games, although make sure you read our Crusader Kings 3 review, just to be sure. It's still early into the life cycle of CK3, but it's clear that the modding community is already in full flow. Some have already begun work on the ambitious project of making some of the popular mods from CK2 available in CK3. With all this buzz surrounding the mod scene, we figured we might as take a brief look at what's already on offer and let you know what the most promising projects are right now. | Microsoft Flight Simulator is getting a hotfix to address crashing issues Posted: 30 Jul 2021 04:53 AM PDT Earlier this week, Microsoft Flight Simulator got a major update bringing improved performance that reportedly doubled frames-per-second on some gaming PCs, among other changes. However, it looks like some simmers have been experiencing hiccups following the patch's arrival, with some reporting repeat crashing issues. The good news is developer Asobo Studio has announced there's a hotfix on the way. In the simulation game's latest patch notes, Asobo says a hotfix is coming later today (July 30) at 8am PT / 11am ET / 4pm BST to both our home platform and the Xbox Series X and S consoles, with Microsoft Flight Simulator having just landed on the latter earlier this week. It is just a hotfix coming, so changes are minimal in scope, but the stability and performance tweaks should help address the crashing problems players have been experiencing. The hotfix notes list fixes for "various crashes in game and on the world map", "crashes related to the offline AI traffic", and some minor memory leaks. | Posted: 30 Jul 2021 04:37 AM PDT Looking for a guide to the Genshin Impact elements? Notoriously addictive gacha game Genshin Impact has taken the gaming world by storm - and whether you're just getting started in the beautiful world of Teyvat, or you're completely smitten with the charming anime game, there are a few crucial combat mechanics that you might need reminding of as you set off on your adventure. According to the lore, there are seven Genshin Impact gods, and each presides over a different elemental domain. The elements in Genshin Impact are: Pyro (fire), Geo (earth), Dendro (nature), Cryo (ice), Electro (lightning), Anemo (wind), and Hydro (water). Every character makes use of one of these elements - the Traveler, however, is able to use either Anemo or Geo. In battle, Genshin Impact elements combine to create powerful elemental reactions which you can use to devastate your foes. When building your Genshin Impact team, it's important to consider how these elements will synergise. The elemental affinities of your team members also passively combine into Elemental Resonance bonuses, giving you various different buffs if you have multiple characters of the same elemental type. Here's everything you need to know about Genshin Impact elements, and the elemental combos you can conjure up. | Destiny 2: what is the Timelost weapon this week? Posted: 30 Jul 2021 04:28 AM PDT Want to know what this week's Destiny 2 Timelost weapon is? Much like the Destiny 2 Nightfall weapons, every week a new Timelost weapon becomes available. They're essentially better versions of the basic Vault of Glass weapons, with an extra third and fourth perk slot, as well as a slot for Adept weapon mods. To get a Timelost weapon, you will need to complete its particular challenge in the Vault of Glass on Master difficulty. You can check out our Destiny 2 Vault of Glass walkthrough for tips on how to beat it. Five encounters in the raid have a challenge associated with them, which is basically an extra condition to meet when completing the fight (for example, the 'Wait For It' challenge on Confluxes requires you to wait until the Wyverns have started sacrificing themselves before you kill them). On normal difficulty, completing a challenge grants bonus loot, but on Master, this is how you get your Timelost weapon. Only one challenge is 'active' per week, and they rotate with the weekly update every Tuesday at 5pm UTC. RELATED LINKS: Destiny 2: Beyond Light review, Destiny 2 exotics, Play Destiny 2 |
