“No plan” to have Battlefield 2042 ranked mode at launch

“No plan” to have Battlefield 2042 ranked mode at launch

When it launches, Battlefield 2042 will support the exciting Battlefield Portal mode - where players can build and put together their own Battlefield experiences, even being able to create their own eSport settings and environments. However, the bad news is that Battlefield 2042 will apparently not launch with any sort of ranked or eSport mode.

In an interview with YouTube channel Battlefield Nation (via MP1st), Battlefield 2042's senior design director Justin Wiebe was asked about how DICE/EA/Ripple Effect would be supporting eSports and the eSport creations by players in Battlefield Portal - where he confirmed that "there's no plan to have any kind of ranked or eSport mode at launch".

However, Wiebe also makes it clear that "this is something that obviously we want to hear more about from the community," before Ripple Effect/DICE decides what to do regarding a ranked mode - adding, "if that's something that's important to the community, we'd like to hear about it, and you know, we'll kind of see what happens after that."

José Mourinho blames Fortnite for keeping his players up all night

José Mourinho blames Fortnite for keeping his players up all night

Legendary football manager José Mourinho is a big fan of football, Rome, and even Instagram, but apparently he doesn't have much time for Fortnite. The former Manchester United manager calls Epic's insanely popular battle royale game "a nightmare" and blames it for stopping his players from getting a good night's rest - even when they have a game the next day.

This was revealed as part of a video series of "rapid responses" posted by the official English-language AS Roma Twitter account - AS Roma, of course, being the Rome-based football team that Mourinho is currently managing. He has a lot of nice things to say about various topics, such as his love of all forms of Italian food and the music of Bryan Adams and Bruce Springsteen. Even Instagram he refers to as "fun".

The only harsh words Mourinho has in the entire video, in fact, are saved for Fortnite - which he calls "a nightmare". As he explains, "football players, they stay up all night playing that s**t, and the next day they have a game!"

Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection coming from modders with Valve’s consent

Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection coming from modders with Valve’s consent

Fans of Valve's iconic Half-Life series were excited to spot the sudden appearance of Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection on Steam this week. While sadly not an official Valve product, it is in fact the next version of the excellent Half-Life 2: Update mod from the same team - which will presumably include all the Episode DLC too.

Half-Life 2: Update initially launched in 2015 from community member and modder Filip Victor, and was good enough to get its own Steam page and support from Valve. It featured a complete overhaul of the game's lighting system, new particle and fog effects, many bug fixes, and even a fun Community Commentary Mode - all without sacrificing Half-Life 2's visual look.

Filip Victor's next project is this new Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection, which was spotted on SteamDB and sounds like it was originally meant to just be a major patch for Half-Life 2: Update that incorporated Valve's two episodic expansions. Presumably, the creator has decided the update is big enough to justify its own standalone release, and it'll apparently put the previous Update "to shame".

Decade-old Serious Sam spin-off starring the bomb guy finally hits PC

Decade-old Serious Sam spin-off starring the bomb guy finally hits PC

It's been a long time since the last Serious Sam spin-off game, but now one of the oldest has finally arrived on Steam ten years after its initial release. Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack! is an endless runner that originally launched on mobile in October 2011, and puts players in control of one of the series' iconic Headless Kamikaze enemies in pursuit of Serious Sam himself.

Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack! appeared on Android a decade ago and on iOS in 2012, and was released as part of the Serious Sam Indies series. The series also includes 2D shooter Serious Sam: Double D, JRPG Serious Sam: The Random Encounter, and the most recent game Serious Sam: Tormental - a top-down roguelite shooter, similar to Enter The Gungeon, which is still in Early Access.

As for Kamikaze Attack, developer Be-Rad Entertainment clearly weren't content to just dump the game on Steam, as it's apparently been updated with a few new features - including up-resed crisper graphics, improved particle effects, and cleaned-up UI.

Halo Infinite beta leaks multiple campaigns and story spoilers

Halo Infinite beta leaks multiple campaigns and story spoilers

The first Halo Infinite beta is going on this weekend and alongside enjoying the multiplayer, fans have also been digging into the game's secrets. As it turns out, the Halo Infinite tech preview apparently contains a number of story spoilers - not to mention the seeming confirmation that there will be multiple campaigns on offer.

Just last month Halo Infinite developer 343 Industries hinted at story expansions following the initial campaign, with the Heroes of Reach DLC due sometime post-launch and the possibility of multiple "campaign passes" suggested by a screenshot on the Halo Waypoint blog for June - something the paid-for single-player/co-op game may offer alongside the free multiplayer's own Battle Pass.

It would seem this may well be true, as the current Halo Infinite technical beta includes a number of blanked-out options on the overview menu, which can be easily seen using the Halo Waypoint app - as spotted by Xbox News on Twitter. Alongside 'news' and 'multiplayer' is the suspicious button labelled 'campaigns' - which is in the plural. Either this is a typo or Halo Infinite will have multiple campaigns.

What if: Cyberpunk 2077 came out right now?

What if: Cyberpunk 2077 came out right now?

What's the first thing you think of when you read the words 'Cyberpunk 2077'? Let me hazard a guess: I'm pretty sure it's not blasting down one of Night City's main thoroughfares atop a futuristic Arch motorcycle with Run The Jewels thumping in your ears. It's probably not helping the roguish Panam Palmer reunite the Aldecaldo clan. My bet is that your first thoughts about CD Projekt Red's latest open-world game are about bugs and memes.

Since its troubled launch, Cyberpunk 2077 has been the butt of countless viral jokes - the latest has involved the subreddit flooding with riffs on developer CD Projekt Red's own #CyberpunkInNumbers hashtag. While CD Projekt was sharing figures like "13,000,000,000 enemies defeated," redditors were shooting back with meme versions about how many players had crashed into buildings due to not being able to see an upcoming turn on the minimap.

By the time Cyberpunk 2077 launched in December 2020, expectations had reached ludicrous levels. CD Projekt had been running a full court publicity press since Keanu Reeves' appearance at E3 the year before, and the product the publisher ultimately delivered turned out to be completely unprepared for its big moment in the spotlight. What might have been the biggest hype train in gaming history crashed hard into the ravine floor of multiple game-breaking bugs, severe performance problems (especially on last-gen consoles), and undercooked gameplay mechanics.

Sony confirms it bought a PC port specialist studio “to help with” PC ports

Sony confirms it bought a PC port specialist studio “to help with” PC ports

Earlier this month Sony acquired Nixxes Software, a studio primarily dedicated to porting console games to PC - leading many fans to theorise that Sony bought them to work on exclusively creating PC ports of PS4 and PS5 games. A month later, Sony has now confirmed that this is exactly the case and Nixxes is "to help with" bringing the publisher's catalogue to PC.

On July 1, Sony announced via press release that it had bought Nixxes Software "to provide high quality in-house technical and development capabilities for PlayStation Studios," with studio founder Jurjen Katsman saying that it would deliver the "highest-quality gameplay experiences for PlayStation fans".

Nixxes has been around for over 20 years, and despite having a few PlayStation ports in that time its focus has primarily been on the PC - its most recent projects being the PC versions of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and Marvel's Avengers. Consequently, fans immediately jumped to the conclusion that Nixxes would be working on more PC ports for first-party PlayStation games - and now that's been confirmed.

Picture Metroid Prime in the Doom engine, but a nightmare – that’s Vomitoreum

Picture Metroid Prime in the Doom engine, but a nightmare – that’s Vomitoreum

The lead developer of Vomitoreum says it's "inspired by the likes of Metroid Prime and Dark Souls", so I need you to know that I'm not just pulling the comparisons in the headline out of nowhere. This is a Metroidvania set in a nightmarescape and built in GZDoom, and it's now available on Steam if you're looking for something grim and challenging.

Vomitoreum was the subject of a successful Kickstarter earlier this year, and it's out now on Steam and Itch.io at a price of $9.99 / £7.19 / €8.19. As the devs describe it, you'll "explore a land that has been plagued with an eldritch infection, a horrible fog that blankets the world and turns it's denizens into wretched mutants. Delve deep into the ruins of this plagued world and find a cure for this horrid blight."

A quick look at the screenshot above will probably let you know if you're going to vibe with Vomitoreum's aesthetics - I'm not 100% sure I do, but it's a striking look, and I'm always down for aesthetically daring Metroidvania.

FFXIV devs change the Sage job icon after it triggers a phobia for some players

FFXIV devs change the Sage job icon after it triggers a phobia for some players

Today I learned that trypophobia, a fear or revulsion at certain patterns of holes or bumps, is a thing some people suffer from. The developers of Final Fantasy XIV also recently learned the same thing, as the icon for the new Sage job triggered trypophobia for some players. The developers have announced that they're changing the icon in time for the Endwalker release date.

"The severity of the reaction varies between people, and what triggers it in some may not do so in others," director and producer Naoki Yoshida says in the announcement. "But regardless of such differences, you have given us your earnest feedback, and there's still time to change things. Considering also the fact that job icons are prominently visible in the game, and that they also appear on merchandise, we've made the decision to redesign the sage icon."

The new design is pretty similar to the old one - it simply fills in the holes in three of the four nouliths which represent the Sage's magical abilities.
