Deliver packages with wobbly vehicles you design in Mars First Logistics Posted: 01 Jul 2021 03:02 PM PDT The last game I played by Ian MacLarty was the shifting magic eye maze Catacombs Of Solaris, so I was surprised to learn that his next game is Mars First Logistics, a physics-based, open world simulation about designing your own vehicles to ship cargo across the red planet. Not an unwelcome surprise. Find the announcement trailer below. |
BeamNG.drive update adds new maps and cars to the smashing car playground Posted: 01 Jul 2021 02:18 PM PDT BeamNG.drive is, in a way, the Dwarf Fortress of car games. It's a six years and counting early access project determined to simulate every element of wheeled vehicles, where the fun of playing with it feels like a side effect more than a deliberate intention. But it is fun, and it's just received a massive update that includes new maps, new vehicles, revamped graphics, a traffic light system, and "an improved oil simulation". Heck yeah. |
AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative, from the Zero Escape devs, will arrive 2022 Posted: 01 Jul 2021 01:36 PM PDT Grisly murder mystery visual novel AI: The Somnium Files is getting a sequel. Called AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative, it features a new set of murders to solve with AI-eyeball Alba and new protagonist Mizuki Okiura. There's a teaser trailer below. |
Sony bought PC porting specialist Nixxes Software Posted: 01 Jul 2021 12:33 PM PDT Sony have bought another studio, after acquiring Housemarque earlier this week. This one is of particular interest to us, too. It's Nixxes Software, a "technical video game studio" responsible for, among other things, handling the PC ports for a lot of games. |
Dorfromantik will get our much desired creative mode this summer Posted: 01 Jul 2021 11:49 AM PDT Dorfromantik is an entrancing early access building game about placing hexagonal tiles to complete challenges and construct beautiful, pastoral landscapes. Run out of available moves and it's game over, however, consigning your crafted world to the scrapheap. For now. An update coming this summer will add what I've been clamouring for: a creative mode. |
Get the critically acclaimed Corsair 4000D Airflow PC case for 33% off Posted: 01 Jul 2021 11:28 AM PDT Corsair have gone from one of the worst mainstream PC case builders to one of the best with their latest design refresh, which has so far included the mid-size 4000D, bigger 5000D and full tower 7000D. Today, the 4000D is on sale at Scan for nearly £30 off, making it a great time to build a new PC or move your system into a more modern case. |
This AMD FSR mod makes GTA 5 look super sharp Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:21 AM PDT Despite being released eight years ago, Grand Theft Auto V can still use help with performance. It’s just that sort of game. You can use the in-built upscaler (running the game at a lower resolution than your monitor's native resolution then upscaling to the correct size) to do so, but the image quality definitely suffers from it. Thankfully, a better method has appeared in the form of AMD's DLSS-alike, FidelityFx Super Resolution (or FSR). It's been ported over to GTA V by a fan, and when you compare the two side-by-side AMD’s image quality definitely wins out. |
Our best wireless gaming keyboard is £60 off at Amazon Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:03 AM PDT The Logitech G915 Lightspeed, 'the holy grail of wireless gaming keyboards', has hit an all-time low price at Amazon UK. The ultra-premium keeb, which normally retails for £210, is down to £149 - a savings of around £60. |
Imagine that quest in Oblivion where you get stuck in a painting, but it's a whole puzzle game now Posted: 01 Jul 2021 08:30 AM PDT The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was one of the first games I bought for myself rather than playing whatever my older brother brought home. I saw my mate playing Oblivion at his house and alas, etiquette dictated that I could not simply steal it. I'm glad I got a copy all for myself, though, because one of the most memorable quests I found in it was called A Brush With Death, partly because the name is a very funny, low effort pun. In A Brush With Death, you see, you go after an artist who has become trapped in his own painting. It also reminded me of the bit at the start of terrifying children's tale The Witches by Roald Dahl, where a little girl gets trapped inside a painting in her family's house, where they watch her grow old and eventually die. So imagine a game that is basically entirely that. Surprise! It exists, and it's called Summertime Madness, a first-person puzzle game where a sad artist living in 1940s Prague makes a deal with the devil. He gets to live in one of his nice paintings for six hours - but if he doesn't get out before midnight, he's trapped forever. And you know what? Big deal. These paintings are lovely. |
The Nate Files podcast episode 1: the history of glass aquariums Posted: 01 Jul 2021 08:00 AM PDT Because you're a lovely little sausage and have chosen to support us, we're doing a monthly podcast just for you. It's an Electronic Wireless Show extra, featuring the usual cast of myself, Matthew "Dad Pod" Castle and Nate "The Shatterpillar" Crowley (I do not have a nickname do not even try). But the twist is: we put Nate in charge. Codenamed The Nate Files, each of these podstras features Nate giving a tangent free reign. This month: the history of glass aquariums. It is both educational and ridiculous. Matthew is pleased at the glass-banging possibilities presented by history. |
Expect a big performance boost in the next Microsoft Flight Simulator patch Posted: 01 Jul 2021 07:32 AM PDT There are significant performance upgrades in the pipeline for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The good news was stealthily announced on a livestream by developer Asobo's CEO Sebastian Wloch. He showed off the engine tweaks that take the turbulence out of the simulator’s flight path. Smoother performance, better frame rates and fewer resources will all be implemented by the end of July. |
WitcherCon schedule includes pun-tastic pub quiz, Henry Cavill Posted: 01 Jul 2021 07:31 AM PDT When WitcherCon was first announced last month, I very much thought it would be some silly thing to capitalise on the success of Netflix's The Witcher series (and, I mean, it still kinda is). But now the full schedule has been revealed, it actually sounds like a pretty good time. On the 9th and 10th of July, the virtual Witcher-themed event will hold panels with the likes of Henry Cavill, chatting about deep lore, trivia, quizzes and updates on the upcoming Witcher TV shows. |
Posted: 01 Jul 2021 07:30 AM PDT The original Asus ROG Claymore was my gateway to the world of mechanical keyboards, converting my love of soft, squishy membranes into a new currency of cold, hard clackedy clacks. I still look back on it with great affection, even though its high price prevented it from joining our list of best gaming keyboards at the time. Now, Asus are back with the ROG Claymore II, a new and refreshed wireless take on their classic compact keyboard. |
The best G-Sync gaming monitors Posted: 01 Jul 2021 06:30 AM PDT Playing games at high refresh rates is one of the best things about being a PC gamer, but unless your monitor has some kind of variable refresh rate technology built in, you can often encounter unwanted stutter and screen-tearing. That's why we've compiled this list of the best G-Sync gaming monitors to help you find a great screen that eliminates those pesky defects. We've included a range of screen sizes and refresh rates here, from entry-level 1080p G-Sync screens to 4K G-Sync Ultimate ones. Whatever you're looking for, we've got you covered. |
Chicory: A Colorful Tale review: picture-perfect storytelling Posted: 01 Jul 2021 06:00 AM PDT Creativity lies at the heart of both Greg Lobanov's games. In Wandersong, it was singing. In Chicory: A Colorful Tale, it's painting. While not the most heroic of video game pursuits - indeed, Wandersong's bard and Chicory's janitor-turned-amateur brush wielder are repeatedly shown to be considerably less capable than their games' personal and professional heroes - both end up playing critical roles in restoring their respective worlds to their former glory. They balance out the bad, and revive what was lost. It's a feeling that anyone with a creative outlet can relate to, whether it's drawing, singing, knitting, playing an instrument, heck, even writing, but Chicory goes one step further. Despite its big, chunky picture book veneer, this top-down adventure game strikes hard at what it actually means to be creative, celebrating its joyous and fulfilling highs while also tackling its (sometimes literally) monstrous lows, including imposter syndrome, burn-out, depression and more. It's very much a story first, game second kind of tale, but as with Wandersong before it, its winsome cast, sensitive story-telling and infectious soundtrack go a long way in papering over its somewhat limited mechanical toolset. At the risk of sounding like a big clanging cliche, it's very artfully done. |
Wood and talent are all you need to turn an Xbox controller into a steering wheel Posted: 01 Jul 2021 05:28 AM PDT If you have an Xbox controller lying around, and a prodigious talent for woodworking and engineering, then congratulations! You too can build a steering wheel. That’s what Redditor “jaayaz” did. They encased their controller in a wooden frame and, via a series of levers, bolts, and designer sandals, turned it into a homemade “Logitech G39”. |
The top 10 games on PC in July Posted: 01 Jul 2021 05:00 AM PDT Alright, I know you’re high on Starfield, you’re intrigued by Guardians Of The Galaxy, and you’ve been vibrating with excitement ever since you got your first look at Elden Ring gameplay, but you might as well put all of them to the back of your mind for now. The heavy-hitters of E3 aren’t coming out any time soon, so you’re better off shifting your focus onto video games that you can play over the next four weeks. |
Rainbow Six Extraction's failsafe system will never leave you without playable operators Posted: 01 Jul 2021 04:42 AM PDT During E3, we saw a bunch of new gameplay for Ubisoft's upcoming stealthy alien shoot 'em up, Rainbow Six Extraction (formerly known as Quarantine). It's a spin-off from the tactical shooter Rainbow Six Siege, and I think it looks good - PvE offshoots of PvP games are my jam. But while the new footage showed how a typical mission would go in Extraction, it left me with a lot more questions. So, I reached out to Ubisoft to ask game director Patrick Méthé for a little more detail on how things will work. To be honest, my main goal was to find out if Caveria would be able to tackle aliens to the ground and interrogate them, but it sounds like they probably won't be doing that (which is a missed opportunity, if you ask me - one of her abilities in Siege is that she can question downed enemies to reveal player locations). |
Players will get to redesign Pathfinder: Wrath Of The Righteous' biggest city as they play Posted: 01 Jul 2021 04:41 AM PDT As we quest towards the September release of Pathfinder: Wrath Of The Righteous, our little group of adventurers is being guided to the upcoming cRPG’s largest city. The latest dev diary details Drezen, "the biggest fantasy fortress we've ever built." The stronghold looms large on the horizon, and will eventually become a hub for the player to rest, trade and more. But it’s more than that: the design of the city is tied to the player’s choices as they progress through the world, and the rebuilding process has some drastically different outcomes. |
The ugliest versions of Final Fantasy are being pulled off Steam this month Posted: 01 Jul 2021 04:03 AM PDT To make way for the upcoming Final Fantasy 1-6 Pixel Remasters, the current versions of Final Fantasy 5 and Final Fantasy 6 will be pulled off Steam later this month. Since these are the ugly mobile ports, I think it's safe to say they won't be missed, though. Both Steam pages for Final Fantasy 5 and 6 have been updated with disclaimers that they'll "no longer be available for purchase after July 27th 2021". They then say you should buy the remastered versions instead which are "coming soon". |
Have You Played... Dyson Sphere Program? Posted: 30 Jun 2021 11:30 PM PDT Dyson Sphere Program is possibly the most ambitious game I've ever played. It's certainly the most ambitious game that manages to deliver on its promise. That promise? Factorio, but in 3D, set in a galaxy of multiple spherical planets, and with the goal of creating a Dyson Swarm megastructure around a star to harness its energy. I mean, come on. How can any development team deliver on such a promise? Let alone a development team of only five people? |
Persona 4 Golden has now sold over a million copies on PC Posted: 30 Jun 2021 03:18 PM PDT Ever since its surprise launch on Persona 4 Golden on PC last summer, there's been a decent amount of chatter about PC versions of other Atlus games. Sega have said that the port's success on PC had them considering more PC ports in general and they've now attached a recent number as context for that consideration. P4 Golden has now sold over a million copies on Steam, Atlus say, which sure does seem decent for the port of a game from 2008. |
Rainbow Six Extraction's operators will all be ones you know from Siege Posted: 30 Jun 2021 02:11 PM PDT After spending some time under wraps, Rainbow Six Extraction recently emerged with the expected announcement that it would be ditching its former name "Quarantine". What it isn't letting go of, Ubisoft say, are all of the oh so many operators in Rainbow Six Siege. With so many to choose from, Ubisoft aren't designing new operators for their Left 4 Dead-like co-op shooter. Instead, they're going to be bringing some player favorite operators to Extraction, along with some who "haven’t received the amount of love we think they deserve". |
Diablo 4 will actually let you customise your character's face Posted: 30 Jun 2021 12:52 PM PDT Diablo IV is still an unknown amount of time away from launch, but Blizzard are keeping up with their quarterly blog posts digging into details about the next big hack 'n slash RPG. Up for show and tell this time is Diablo 4's character customisation, which there sure is going to be a heck of a lot of for a game largely played looking down at the top of your own head. That's because Blizzard are planning some flashy "cinematic" moments with your very own character, they say. Don't forget to dye your armor while you're at it. |
Time for an NVMe upgrade? Samsung's 1TB 980 SSD is just £89 today, 23% off Posted: 30 Jun 2021 12:20 PM PDT Samsung's 980 SSD, the Korean chaebol's latest budget NVMe SSD, finally fulfilled its purpose today when UK retailer Scan discounted the 1TB model by £27. That puts it down to £89 and change, the lowest price we've seen and in the same league as other low-cost, high-performance NVMe drives like the Crucial P2 and WD Blue SN550. |
The 32-in Samsung Odyssey G7 gaming monitor is £469 at Amazon UK today Posted: 30 Jun 2021 11:57 AM PDT The Samsung Odyssey G7 has been discounted to £469 on Amazon UK today, beating even the Prime Day Lightning Deal price by a good £30. That's the cheapest we've ever seen this model, and a terrific deal for a 32-inch 2560x1440 monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate and DisplayHDR 600 certification. |
