Ariana Grande is the Next Pop Artist to Perform in Fortnite

Posted: 02 Aug 2021 09:45 AM PDT

If you’re a fan of Fornite, then you’re likely looking forward to the second half of season 7. The alien-themed hijinks are a great add to the game. I’m actually happy to say I checked out recent additions to the game and loved what I played. The latest rumor surrounding another huge event for the game included two things. Firstly, fans thought we’d get another concert of sorts. The second part is the big piece of news: Ariana Grande was attached to rumors about the concert. We now know that Ariana Grande is set to headline a new concert event in Fortnite called the Rift Tour. For fans of the game and the singer, this might be the finest Fornite collab yet. Here’s what we know so far.

When to See Ariana Grande Play a Virtual Concert in Fornite

After a pretty successful Travis Scott Fortnite Concert, Epic Games saw an opportunity. With a younger audience playing the game most often, pop music fits right into the vibes of Fortnite. The game continues to grow in popularity and prominence, even as fewer people seem to talk about it. A recent Batman Crossover went over really well. The next big name to join the game’s growing guest list: the current queen of pop herself.

Ariana Grande is headlining a series of concerts involved in the  "Fortnite Rift Tour." There will be five slots in which the artist will perform over three days. Epic Games encourages fans to show up about an hour early because of past experiences with server overload. Epic encourages in its announcement that “our goal is to accommodate everyone possible, but if capacity is reached, please join us for one of the other shows.” Even if you’re not a huge fan of Fortnite or Ariana Grande, you have to admit this is a cool collab. A video game is able to work with a huge global pop star in a really unique way. These sorts of things didn’t happen a decade ago, let alone 5 years ago.

Fans can celebrate Ariana's run in the Rift Tour with her arrival in the Item Shop and Icon Series. As a sneak peek, Epic released two cool items of note. You can find the Ariana Grande Outfit and Piggy Smallz Back Bling in the shop now. Ahead of the show, you still have time to unlock rewards for the first wave of Rift Tour Quests. Hop into the game, check out the Quests in the Rift Tour tab between July 29 and August 8, and target ready to unlock rewards. Heck, if you’re not a fan, it might just be worth attending for the Cuddly Cloudcruiser commemorative Umbrella. The cool limited-time item also comes along with the Skye up High Loading Screen and a Rift Tour-themed Banner for anyone who logs in during August 5-9.

If you’re still a fan of Fortnite, then let us know in the comments. Don’t be shy; the game is still wildly fun. Pay no mind to hate online; this is a safe place for whatever you like to play!

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Director to Helm the Dead Space Remake

Posted: 02 Aug 2021 06:55 AM PDT

Say what you will about Assassin’s Creed, but the series is highly influential to the industry. The more we see the series expand in scope and gameplay, the more we rethink the role of action games. Sure, you could argue that hours and hours of repetitive missions are overkill. That said, it’s hard to argue that Valhalla wasn’t a joy to play on last and current-gen consoles. The game owes a lot of its success to its director Eric Baptizat. Baptizat’s vision was stellar for the Viking-themed Valhalla, and now the director will helm the Dead Space remake for EA’s Motive studio.

The Director of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla Will Lead Dev Team for Dead Space Remake

Per VGCValhalla director Eric Baptizat has a new project. The recently announced Dead Space Next-Gen Remake is a hotly anticipated title for many. With great expectations come the chance of a huge letdown for fans if things don’t go smoothly. Luckily, Baptizat is a great choice to lead the game. Baptizat worked at Ubisoft for 16 years with high-profile roles on many Assassin’s Creed projects. On top of directing Valhalla, he served as the lead designer for Origins and Black Flag.

Ironically enough, the other top name on board for the Dead Space remake is another Ubisoft vet. Creative director Roman Campos-Oriola is also attached to Dead Space‘s remake after working for Ubisoft since 2006. The new EA studio Motive will develop the game and is full of great minds from huge releases. Some of the most notable games others on the dev team worked for include Mass Effect Legendary Edition and Star Wars Battlefront 2.

I have high hopes for the release of a Dead Space remake. The premise is quite simple but hugely effective. If you’re not aware, then here’s a quick teaser. Engineer Isaac Clarke is sent to repair a space shuttle’s communications but arrives to find a floating vessel that has become a complete bloodbath. The crew is mutilated and infected with an ancient alien scourge. Thus begins some horrific shooting fun that I can’t wait to experience on new consoles and PC. No release date is known yet, but we’ll let you know when we find out!

If you’re excited to see some big names join the Dead Space remake dev team, then let us know in the comments! As always, keep reading Comic Years for the latest in gaming and pop culture!

New Data Reveals Just How Many Peacock Subscribers There Are in 2021

Posted: 02 Aug 2021 02:37 AM PDT

The Streaming Wars is one of the most intriguing things to watch in entertainment. Platforms and studios are rushing to the competition, all wanting to get a piece of the cake that Netflix has been devouring for years. Some of the newer platforms, like Disney+, are rising to the top of the ranks. Others, like Quibi, have been left in the dust. But what about the ones that are somewhere in the middle? We have some new data from Comcast that shares just how many subscribers the streamer Peacock has earned.

What Is Going On With Peacock Subscribers, According to Data

The second-quarter earnings call for 2021, held by Comcast (the parent company to NBCUniversal), revealed key information regarding the data of Peacock. This service, which launched in July of 2020, has earned 54 million signups. Additionally, there are 20 million accounts that are active every month. These numbers are far ahead of projections, which would have put them at 35 million subscribers by 2024.

These numbers, which are a huge jump from last quarter’s 42 million subscribers, could partially be due to the streamer finally allowing content to show on Amazon Fire TV. The exclusion was a huge problem for many wannabe subscribers when it was revealed last summer. Other reasons for the success include their upcoming slate of original content and adaptations, like the Vampire Academy series heading to Peacock.

Compared to other streaming services, Peacock is fighting a good fight. Noisier competitors, like HBO Max, have reached similar numbers. The WarnerMedia streamer, paired with HBO, has 44.2 million domestic subscribers and climbing after its launch in May 2020. Their futures rely on our continued dependence on streaming platforms and the development of new and original content to watch.

Readers, are you surprised to hear the new data for how many subscribers Peacock has? We were. Drop your thoughts in the comments!

Is the New Jungle Cruise Movie Connected To The S.E.A. Universe?

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 04:36 PM PDT

Wait, what’s this? Another chance to connect recent news to my stupid obsession with Disney Parks? I’ll take it! If you watched Jungle Cruise this weekend, then you’re not alone. The film is on course for an over $32 million debut at the box office this weekend. Likewise, the film’s Premiere Access on Disney+ likely helped it gain more viewers. The movie is a lot of fun and exactly what I wanted from it. I echo a lot of the things our own Comic Years skipper Joshua wrote in his Jungle Cruise review. One thing I’d like to add: I think there’s a good chance the new Jungle Cruise movie is connected to the mysterious S.E.A. organization. If you’re not familiar with this fictional Disney Parks organization, then let me catch you up.

What is Disney’s S.E.A. Organization?

Earlier this year, Emily wrote up about Ronald D. Moore creating new shows for Disney+. One of those projects was a new series called The Society of Explorers and Adventurers. As someone who adores Disney Parks lore, I immediately jumped out of my chair. An actual series based on S.E.A. would be a true love letter to Parks fans. In fact, S.E.A. itself is sort of like a love letter shared between Disney Imagineers. I could write for paragraphs about this silly little fictional group, but here’s what you need to know as it pertains to the new series and possibly Jungle Cruise.

S.E.A. as a concept in Disney Parks originates from Imagineers seeking a way to connect numerous rides from Parks around the world. The lore begins in 1538 with Tokyo DisneySea’s “Fortress Explorations” ride. According to the society itself, "The mission of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers is to collect, conserve, and curate valuable cultural and artistic artifacts from around the world and make them available to the public in an artistically pleasing and sensitive manner.” This mission statement displays at both Mystic Manor in Hong Kong Disneyland and Disney Cruise Line’s Oceaneer Lab.

There’s an insanely detailed story to all of these rides and the fictional characters that star in them. By 2013 during the opening at Hong Kong Disneyland, Disney seemed interested in pushing S.E.A. to prominence rather than just a hushed and hidden Easter egg. While many still don’t know the details about S.E.A., the pending series and Jungle Cruise movie might be a sign of more to come.

Does Jungle Cruise Fit Into the Upcoming S.E.A. Series?

Jungle Cruise was a great film and might fit into Disney’s S.E.A. universe in a cool way. Jungle Cruise, the ride, is one of many rides connected to the society. When you take into consideration the attractions and places near Jungle Cruise at Disneyland, it certainly seems unlikely that the film won’t fit somewhere in the series timeline. Near Jungle Cruise in Disneyland, both the Bengal Barbeque restaurant and Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar have large roles in S.E.A. Whether or not Trader Same from the Jungle Cruise movie will be in the series is yet to be seen.

While the ending of the new Jungle Cruise movie fails to connect S.E.A. directly, we do get word of a society multiple times in the film. In the beginning, McGregor Houghton is presenting findings on the Tree of Life flower. We never hear S.E.A. mentioned directly, but it seems possible. Likewise, we get a mention of Albert Falls in the film. Falls is referenced in the movie as having searched for the Tree of Life. From this expedition, he recovered an arrowhead that Lily Houghton, played by Emily Blunt, carries throughout the film. In S.E.A. lore, Albert Falls is a member of the society and owns a company called The Jungle Navigation Company. Sound familiar? That’s the name of Frank Wolff’s company, who is played by Dwayne Johnson.

All I will say is this: I hope we get to hear more about the S.E.A. series soon. If they confirm connections from the Jungle Cruise movie to S.E.A., then a lot of Disney Parks nerds like myself will be very pleased. Let us know what you thought of the new movie in the comments!

JK Simmons May Return As Commissioner Gordon in ‘Batgirl’

Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:46 PM PDT

Some actors seem to appear in everything. One of our favorites that fit this category, JK Simmons, also has a habit of reappearing in roles that we thought he was done with, like J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and later in the MCU flicks. The latest reappearance of JK Simmons may be in Batgirl, where he is in talks to play Commissioner Gordon again.

JK Simmons Likely To Come Back as Commissioner Gordon In Batgirl

The upcoming Batgirl film will follow the titular character, a.k.a. Barbara Gordon, on an unknown adventure. Plot details remain secret, but most of the behind-the-scenes crew have been announced recently. This includes directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life), writer Christina Hodson, and Kristin Burr as the producer. Actress Leslie Grace (In the Heights) will play Batgirl.

Simmons, already known to the DCEU, portrayed the character of Commissioner Gordon in 2017’s Justice League (and, of course, 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League.) He is an ally to Batman and the commissioner of Gotham’s City Police. While we love his appearances in the film and recognize the key role, it remained a pretty anticlimatic role for such a beloved actor. Hopefully, Batgirl will give him something to do.

A Character Essential To Batgirl

While the role may be underdeveloped in films (so far), he remains a key character in the comics. Gordon made his comics debut in 1939 with Detective Comics #27 and has consistently shown a desire to slow down crime in Gotham City. Additionally, he is tied to Barbara Gordon and has been shown as her adoptive father and uncle.

The role remains in negotiations. But based on the popularity of the character and the key ties to her comics storyline, we would be surprised to see this deal fall through. JK Simmons has also claimed that he signed on for 3 films, increasing the odds that he shows up in this one!

Batgirl will be dropping on HBO Max in 2022. We’re as excited as you are, so stay tuned at Comic Years for more information about the plot and release date!

Readers, let us know your thoughts about JK Simmons joining the cast of Batgirl in his role as Commissioner Gordon. Are you excited to see the actor reappear in the DCEU? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
