| New Venom And Carnage Images Are More Exciting Than The Trailer Posted: 30 Aug 2021 09:31 AM PDT The first Venom movie was a surprise success, even if it was a kind of insane superhero film. However, one of the reasons many fans flocked to the cinemas (back in a time where we could flock to the cinemas and sit together)? Carnage. We all knew that he wouldn't be in the first movie. But even before leaks, trailers, or anything else, we also knew that they'd introduce him in a mid or end credit scene. So, of course, they did, with Woody Harrelson perfectly cast too. Now, while the new Venom: Let There Be Carnage trailer got us pumped for mayhem and murder, the new Venom and Carnage images are even better. So, let's look at them. New Images of Carnage, In All His Brutal Glory, Is Bad News for Venom![]() So many pointy tentacles! (Image: Sony Pictures) When I was a kid, one of my favorite action figures – and one that my mom hated the most – was Carnage. The Toy Biz Spider-Man toy for Carnage Unleashed had a removable mask, tentacles, and two different symbiote weapon attachments! So, basically, for a ten-year-old, it was the best Spidey villain toy ever: ![]() Hardcore nostalgia right now. (Image: Toy Biz) Accordingly, in the new Venom and Carnage images, we can see Cletus Cassidy using the symbiote to create the same kind of crazy weapons. Some tentacles have maces; others have blades. The first film explained this before the battle between Venom and Riot. Some symbiotes are capable of creating brutal weapons and others, like Venom, are more limited in their abilities. And seeing this as a live-action character, I'm starting to see my mom's point. But that's just a few of the pics.
Eddie and Venom Don't Quite Look Ready to Face Carnage in the New Images. We got a wonderfully hilarious moment in the new trailer as Venom tries cooking breakfast for Eddie…it doesn't go well. But the routine, showing the weirdest version of The Odd Couple ever, revealed how out-of-sync they are. Eddie wants to be a journalist again, and win back Anne, the love of his life. Venom wants to eat more people. Compromise is hard, kids. In these new images of Venom and Eddie Brock, we see that they'll have to make their, uh, relationship work out.
Naomie Harris In Venom: Let There Be ShriekingNaomie Harris is one of those actors we were all waiting to see in a superhero role. Probably someone high up in ranking, like maybe debuting as Nubia in a Wonder Woman film. Maybe she'd be the new Emma Frost or Jean Grey when they reboot X-Men. Or even Invisible Woman or Zatanna. She could make Zatanna a household name like Zoe Saldana did with Gamora. But no one would have thought, "Oh, Shriek! The barely-used symbiote from the 90's that’s not even one of the more popular symbiotes from that era. Perfect!" However, the fact that they cast such a high-caliber actress for such an obscure role should indicate that Shriek will be an important character in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and maybe even beyond. Plus, even though we don't see her in her symbiote form in the new Venom and Carnage images, it's important to remember that – with her powers – she is more than capable of taking out both characters.
Do the New Venom and Carnage Images Show Us Our First Look at Toxin? One casting choice that should alert fans is Stephen Graham as Patrick Mulligan – the host to one of the more popular Marvel symbiotes, Toxin. Now, this could have just been a way to include the name, but not really do much with it. However, Graham is a great character actor, and we often see this kind of actor pop into a franchise for a decently sized role and then move on. Toxin could also be a problem for Venom and Carnage both. (Image: Marvel Comics) But what makes Mulligan a little more interesting is how secretive Andy Serkis and Tom Hardy were when asked about the character. Granted, superhero film actors tend to be secretive about most things, but sometimes by not answering us…they kind of answer us. So, just a name for Graham's detective character, or are we getting Toxin? Unfortunately, the new Venom and Carnage images don't tell us much. Venom: Let There Be Carnage debuts in theaters on October 15, 2021Are you excited about Venom: Let There Be Carnage? What Symbiotes do you want to see in the future of the franchise? (Hoping for Agent Venom. Or Agent Anti-Venom. How about you? (Featured Image: Sony Pictures) New Venom And Carnage Images Are More Exciting Than The Trailer |
| The Power of the Dog Teaser Shows Benedict Cumberbatch at His Meanest Posted: 30 Aug 2021 06:31 AM PDT Benedict Cumberbatch is having a great month for movie teasers. His version of Doctor Strange in sweatpants was revealed in the recently released trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, showing that the character is still as rebellious as his original MCU feature film. On the other side of the genre spectrum, the actor has appeared in the first teaser for The Power of the Dog. Coming to Netflix later this year, this drama film will bring the actor back to a darker role. Watch The Power of the Dog Teaser Below“He’s just a man. Only another man,” Kirsten Dunst’s Rose Gordon shares about Benedict Cumberbatch’s Phil Burbank. But while he may be just another man, he certainly isn’t any regular one. Burbank is a sadistic and intimidating, yet charismatic ranch owner with a questionable moral compass. When his brother, Jesse Plemons’ George, marries and brings home a new wife and son to their ranch, Phil is more than displeased. In addition to the actors mentioned above, the film includes Thomasin McKenzie, Frances Conroy, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The cast list went through quite a few changes during pre-production, and Paul Dano was even attached to Plemons’ role before leaving for The Batman. The film, directed by acclaimed director Jane Campion (The Piano), has already built some early Oscar buzz, especially for Cumberbatch. Could it be Netflix’s biggest player come awards season? The Power of the Dog will have a limited release starting November 17th, 2021. It will become available for streaming on Netflix on December 1st. This gives us plenty of Cumberbatch to hold us over until No Way Home releases on December 15th. Does the teaser for The Power of the Dog have you feeling excited about the film? | George RR Martin and Hidetaka Miyazaki Split Elden Ring Writing Roles Posted: 30 Aug 2021 03:31 AM PDT The Elden Ring reveal trailer and release date announcement will forever be huge in my memory. I think seeing the game revealed this summer ranks highly in my favorite game announcements. We knew there was a change that more info was coming at Summer Game Fest. What I didn’t expect was to be moved emotionally by what I saw. It’s just visuals and teaser trailer content, but we know the story is bound to be epic. Game of Thrones author George RR Martin might not be able to finish The Winds of Winter, but he did contribute to the world of this game. We found out this week that Hidetaka Miyazaki split the Elden Ring writing roles with George RR Martin in a unique way. Here’s what we learned. George RR Martin Taking Big Picture Narrative Role While Hidetaka Miyazaki Works on In-Game Writing![]() Image Credit: From Software I can’t be the only one still thinking about that Summer Game Fest 2021 Kickoff trailer, right? The proper reveal of Elden Ring still gets me excited when I think about it. If you’re curious about the story in the game, then you’re missing a lot of details as of now. What we do know, however, is how the team approached the writing of this game and world. IGN first reported that George RR Martin and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki would spit the writing of Elden Ring in a unique way. From Software’s Yasuhiro Kitao explained to IGN that Martin is handling narrative and world-building elements. Miyazaki, on the other hand, is working with dialogue and in-game text. Kitao does add as well that FromSoft “haven't changed our principle of providing a world and narrative that the player can interpret for themselves.” It’s interesting that the writing came from two different minds. That’s not uncommon, but Martin playing a big-picture role is a good sign. Without holding responsibility for the minutia of the game’s dialogue and reading elements, it’s likely that the author could focus on what he does best. I’m stoked to play this game when it releases next year. Interestingly, we know that Martin’s role ended “years ago” thanks to an interview he gave to IGN earlier this year. He’s likely far removed from work on the game but we’re nearing a time where we can actually play it. Maybe with his free time he’s working on The Winds of Winter? Or, you know, scoring a 5-year deal with HBO and forgetting to finish A Song of Fire and Ice. I’m not bitter, do I sound bitter? | Disney+ Adds ‘All Hail the King’ Ahead of the Shang-Chi Theatrical Premiere Posted: 29 Aug 2021 09:01 PM PDT It’s hard to be desperate for superhero content these days. After all, Marvel has a release calendar more full than any of our personal ones. Wedged between new releases, Disney+ has just dropped All Hail The King on its streaming platform, and it’s meant to tie in with the upcoming Shang-Chi release. But what does a spin-off of Iron Man 3 have to do with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings? Well, as with everything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s all connected. Let’s take a look at why this short film might be worth watching before we head to movie theaters this September. Disney+ Drops All Hail The King On Platform Right Before Shang-Chi PremieresThe one-shot, which seems to fall somewhere halfway between the MCU and the Marvel shows on Netflix when representing a prison and displaying raunchy comedy, seemed to exist only adjacently to the real Avengers stories. That is, until now. All Hail the King is a 2014 short film that follows Iron Man 3. Attached to the DVD release of Thor: The Dark World, it sees Ben Kingsley reprise his role as Trevor Slattery. He is interviewed by Jackson Norriss (Scoot McNairy) regarding his personal life before the drama starts. But why drop the one-shot on Disney+ now? Aside from reminding us that the Marvel Cinematic Universe featured some queer inclusion (with Sam Rockwell‘s cameo) long before that brief line in Avengers: Endgame, All Hail the King spends some time talking about the Ten Rings organization. Since Iron Man 3 failed to live up to the promise of expanding on the group and The Mandarin as a character, the one-shot gives us hope that it would eventually make its way to the big screen. And it finally will. ![]() Image via Marvel Studios. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings won’t just expand on the rings mentioned in this short film, but it will also see a real version of The Mandarin, with Tony Leung playing Wenwu. We will also see Ben Kingsley return in the role of Slattery because we certainly haven’t seen enough of him. If you managed to miss the All Hail the King one-shot when it first debuted, we recommend heading over to Disney+ and watching it before the premiere of Shang-Chi. And if you haven’t started getting excited about the upcoming film, check out our review of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings before it comes to theaters on September 3rd, 2021! | Lion King Prequel Casting: Aaron Pierre As Mufasa And Kelvin Harrison Jr. As Scar Posted: 29 Aug 2021 05:00 PM PDT Disney is no stranger to releasing live-action films of beloved animated Disney movies (they know the millennials who grew up with them aka ME will pay the money to see them). Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, and Mulan all got the live-action treatment, sometimes with mixed reviews. The 2019 remake of Lion King was one of these. While it had an all-star cast (Beyonce! Donald Glover! James Earl Jones!) and beautiful visuals, many said it was literally the same movie as the animated version just with CGI animals. Still, it grossed $1.6 billion at the global box office, so Walt Disney Studios was quick to lock down a prequel that will be directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight). There’s no word on a release date yet, but the Lion King prequel casting is in full swing: Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad) will voice Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Waves) will voice Scar, otherwise known by his birth name of Taka. Tell Me More About The Lion King Prequel And Its Casting![]() Image via Walt Disney Studios The as-of-yet unnamed prequel doesn’t have plot specifics yet, but it’s supposed to focus on the early years of Mufasa and his brother, which I’m actually really excited about. In the original animated movie, we only knew that there was a lot of bad blood between the two brothers, mainly from what I assumed to be jealousy. This prequel opens the door to so many possibilities: did Scar secretly love Sarabi? Did Mufasa push Scar into the watering hole and Scar never forgave him? We already know Jenkins is a talented director, so I’m looking forward to seeing what he does with the prequel. In an interview he said:
Now that Disney has its protagonists, we can only look forward to more casting news. Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the screenplay for the 2019 movie, is returning to write the follow-up. Are you excited about this Lion King prequel casting news? Let us know in the comments below! | Victoria Mahoney Is Officially the Director for The Old Guard 2 Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:00 PM PDT The dry spell of film releases caused by the coronavirus pandemic was much shorter than we had anticipated. However, the early summer of 2020 still felt like a time where we would have watched anything just because it was new. When The Old Guard dropped on July 10th, 2020, we flocked to our laptops to watch a woman-led, woman-directed comic book adaptation and were more than pleased with the results. The Old Guard 2 is on its way, and Victoria Mahoney will be its director. Victoria Mahoney Signs Up As Director Of The Old Guard 2The Old Guard gave us an insightful story on the triumphs and terribleness of immortality. Based on Greg Rucka’s comic book, we follow Andy (Charlize Theron, who also produces the film), a warrior who has been dealing with the atrocities of humankind for centuries. She is joined by a team of fellow fighters that are fed up with the world around them. When KiKi Layne’s Nile Freeman, a U.S. Marine, finds herself surviving death, she joins Andy’s group and realizes just how valued immortality is. ![]() Kiki Layne in The Old Guard | Image via Netflix A sequel was already an inviting idea after the first film. There were more than a few loose ends that we’d like to see sorted, including the future of Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) and Quynh (Van Veronica Ngo.) And with an entire endless future ahead of the main characters, there is no limit to what they can get up to. The Old Guard 2 will see Victoria Mahoney take over as director, grabbing the chair from Gina Prince-Bythewood. Mahoney is an exciting choice. Her experience includes everything from working as the second unit director on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and directing episodes of acclaimed shows like You and Lovecraft Country. So, we can’t wait to see what shape the Netflix sequel takes under her direction. The Old Guard is currently streaming on Netflix, watch this space for word on the release window for the sequel.Did you miss The Old Guard last summer? It’s not too late to stream it! Check out our review of the film and start getting ready for the next one with us. And in the meantime, let us know what you think about the choice for the new director on The Old Guard 2!
