| MIR4 is blowing up on Steam despite mostly negative reviews, probably because of cryptocurrency Posted: 30 Aug 2021 02:23 PM PDT MIR4 launched on Steam and mobile devices last week, and its peak concurrent player count has been increasing dramatically every day since. It's on pace to crack into Steam's top 50 soon, and this success is coming despite the 'mostly negative' reviews posted for the game on Valve's platform. I'm pretty sure cryptocurrency is the reason why. First, a bit of background. MIR4 is the follow up to a decades-old series of MMORPGs developed by South Korean studio WeMade. The Legend of Mir 3 shut down nearly a decade ago, and MIR4 is, as the number implies, the next entry in the series - though you won't see much reference to the older games in most English-language corners of the web. At first glance, MIR4 looks like a lot of free-to-play MMOs, with a load of microtransactions, a vague take on Asian mythology, and female characters dressed up in far skimpier outfits than their male counterparts. |
| You’ll soon be able to vomit on command in Valheim Posted: 30 Aug 2021 11:10 AM PDT Valheim's big Hearth and Home update is coming in a matter of weeks, and the devs at Iron Gate are still slowly teasing out the new features over time. We've already seen some of the changes coming to the food system, and today we're getting even more details on what to expect. Including the fact that you'll be able to vomit on command. As of Hearth and Home, boars, wolves, and deer will all drop different types of raw meat, which will allow you to cook a greater variety of recipes. Cooking stations will now work like other crafting stations, meaning that you'll have to craft nearby upgrades, like a butcher's table, spice rack, or pots and pans, in order to make use of more advanced recipes. You'll also now have to actually bake bread and pies in an oven. You can't eat when you're full in Valheim, so if you want to change what food bonuses you're receiving before the timers run out, you'll soon be able to chomp down a bukeperry. The creatively-named fruit will let you vomit on command, removing one of your food buffs so you can eat something else. | One of the biggest Diablo 2 mods just got another huge update Posted: 30 Aug 2021 10:19 AM PDT Median XL - Sigma is one of the biggest and most comprehensive mods for the classic RPG game Diablo II, and it's just gotten a major update that adds a host of new tweaks and content. Median XL - Sigma 2.0 touches just about every aspect of Diablo II, from screen resolution support to monster tuning, and much more. Many of the big changes in 2.0 have to do with making the journey to Hell difficulty more interesting. Long-time players consider everything leading up to Hell to be 'tutorial' territory, and with that in mind the Median XL modders have focused a lot of attention on Nightmare difficulty. "Two main problems identified were that monsters would be defeated too easily as soon as players knew to craft a key item or two, and that some would have incredibly bursty damage and could rapidly kill unsuspecting characters," they write in the 2.0.0 changelog on the official site. Expect tougher enemies, with power and abilities tuned to better prepare players for the Diablo II endgame. |
| CD Projekt is hiring Cyberpunk 2077 modders to help build mod support Posted: 30 Aug 2021 10:08 AM PDT It seems developer CD Projekt Red is making some big moves to improve the state of Cyberpunk 2077 mods. The modders behind some of the biggest tools in the community have announced that they've been hired by CDPR to help build out Cyberpunk's mod support. "We are extremely pleased to announce that Blumster, Nightmarea, rfuzzo, and I will be joining CDPR under my and Nightmarea's company," Hambalkó 'Traderain' Bence says in an announcement on the Cyberpunk 2077 modding Discord. "We will be working on various projects related to the Cyberpunk 2077 backend and the game's modding support. We are really excited for this and we really hope we can help to bring Cyberpunk 2077 to the next level!" This team is responsible for projects like WolvenKit, which has been used to build mods in CD Projekt Red games like The Witcher 3 for years. The devs more recently added support for Cyberpunk 2077, and given the game's still-limited official mod support, it's been an essential tool for that game's mod community. | China limits teens to 3 hours of online gaming per week Posted: 30 Aug 2021 07:57 AM PDT New regulations announced by the Chinese government will limit minors there to just three hours of online gaming per week. The new rules, meant to combat 'gaming addiction' among minors, restrict anyone under the age of 18 to one hour of gaming per evening on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Daniel Ahmad, a senior analyst at market research firm Niko Partners, describes the new policy as "extremely restrictive" and points out that the existing rules limit minors to 1.5 hours of gaming per day. The policy, which is set to go into effect September 1, will be enforced at the account level by using existing requirements for real-name registration and China's current anti-addiction system, he explains. "For reference, there are around 110 million minors in China that play videogames today," Ahmad said on Twitter. However, it's worth noting that the regulation covers only online games, and Ahmad also says that while 110 million players is a lot of people, Chinese publisher Tencent says they represent only about 2.6% of its total player spend. | Fallout 4 mod Sim Settlements 2 gets a “DLC-sized expansion” this fall Posted: 30 Aug 2021 03:52 AM PDT One of the best Fallout 4 mods around is getting a hefty new update later this year, the team behind Sim Settlements 2 has revealed. The aptly named Sim Settlements Team has posted a new trailer unveiling a "DLC-sized expansion" to the mod, which will feature Fallout 4's ruthless mercenary Gunners as a "fleshed-out faction" - and it's due to arrive sometime this autumn. Called 'Gunner Outbreak', the new mod expansion's trailer gives a good flavour of what's to come, introducing us to the kinds of people and places we can expect to see (embedded below for you to check out). We see the ominous arrival of Captain Wes and his crew of Gunners at a thriving settlement, with the fearsome leader declaring that it's now under his faction's control, with some threats dished out at its poor populace to keep them in line. Eek. While we only get a feel of the mod expansion's storyline in broad strokes in the clip, it looks like it'll see a group of rebels band together in the wake of the Gunners' arrival. There's brand-new - and impressive - voice acting featured, along with a bunch of other new content to dive into. The mod adds "new disease mechanics, multiple large questlines, and a brand-new game mode where you establish your own faction headquarters", the clip's description explains. | Genshin Impact 2.1 release time – countdown to Baal and Sara banner Posted: 30 Aug 2021 03:13 AM PDT The Genshin Impact 2.1 release date is just a couple days away now, which means we've got lots to get excited for in the way of new content coming to MiHoYo's anime game imminently. The Inazuma Archon Quest's final act, some more boss enemies, two new five-star weapons, and three new characters are on the way with the patch - and now we've got an idea of when it'll be dropping. Some spoilers ahead, folks. MiHoYo is kicking off maintenance on Genshin Impact's 2.1 update at the usual time of 6am UTC+8 on September 1, the studio's just announced on the game's site, which translates to 3pm PST / 6pm EST / 11pm BST on August 31. This is estimated to take around five hours, and as compensation for the servers being down for a time, MiHoYo is once again giving players some freebies - 300 primogems, to be exact. That's 60 for every hour the game's offline for 2.1's upload, though you'll still get the full amount even if the update drops earlier than expected. Some of the big news for the 2.1 update includes the new characters coming: Raiden Shogun and Kujou Sara, who arrive alongside the 2.1 update on September 1 with its first banner, while Kokomi will debut with the second. | League of Legends patch 11.18 notes – Pentakill skins, Hextech Tristana Posted: 30 Aug 2021 11:18 AM PDT League of Legends' 2021 patch rollout keeps on, well, rollin' out. We've got another new update to check out that's just landed piping hot on the PBE. League of Legends patch 11.17 has flown off to live servers, and 11.18's now landed on the MOBA game's testing grounds - so, let's see what's coming up, shall we? As you might have seen shared on Riot's social media channels, the stars of this patch are the new skins for League's metal band Pentakill - as well as its newest member. Following some clues earlier this week, Viego, the Ruined King, has been revealed with his own Pentakill skin that has him shredding his gnarly signature sword like an axe - the musical kind, of course. Elsewhere, Karthus, Kayle, Mordekaiser, Olaf, Sona, and Yorick have got their own Pentakill III: Lost Chapter skins, in honour of the band's new album of the same name, which drops in a couple weeks. We've also got a Hextech skin for Tristana in the mix this patch. As is often the case when a fresh patch drops, there aren't any champion or item balance changes to get a look at just yet. But, keep checking back on these notes over 11.18's testing cycle as we'll post them all here when they hit the PBE. RELATED LINKS: Best LoL Champions , League of Legends patch 11.18, LoL tier list |
