Babylon 5 Reboot at The CW with Creator J. Michael Straczynski

Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:25 AM PDT

Babylon 5 reboot is in development at The CW, Variety reports. Original series creator J. Michael Straczynski is onboard to write the project. He will also executive produce under his Studio JMS banner. Warner Bros. Television, which produced the original series, will produce the reboot.

The new iteration of the sci-fi series is described as a "from-the-ground-up reboot." In the series, John Sheridan, an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war. His arrival triggers a destiny beyond anything he could have imagined, as an exploratory Earth company accidentally triggers a conflict with a civilization a million years ahead of us, putting Sheridan and the rest of the B5 crew in the line of fire as the last, best hope for the survival of the human race.

The original Babylon 5 ran in syndication and on TNT for five seasons, 110 episodes, and seven TV movies, including the 1993 pilot film. The show is considered one of the best sci-fi series ever made by many critics and won numerous awards throughout its run, including two Hugo Awards and a Saturn Award.

Straczynski followed up Babylon 5 with the TNT spinoff series Crusade. The Babylon 5 franchise also includes novels, short stories, and comic books.

Laughable Outrage at Chris Pratt’s Super Mario Cartoon Casting

Posted: 30 Sep 2021 06:15 AM PDT

Breitbart’s reporting that a new animated film based on Nintendo’s famous mascot is being criticized by Italians for casting the non-Italian Chris Pratt to voice Mario:

Some Italian-Americans and Nintendo fans were angered to see that actor Chris Pratt was cast to voice Mario in the upcoming animated film, Super Mario Bros. Fans fumed over the fact that Pratt is not of Italian descent.

Illumination and Nintendo have put together a voiceover cast for Super Mario Bros., according to a report by Deadline, which added that the film is also being co-financed between Universal Pictures and Nintendo.

You’d think most Italians would know better than to follow the example of POC doing the same, but reality can say otherwise, proving white characters are not immune to politicized controversies by people of white backgrounds. That said, there are signs and suggestions not all the outrage culture advocates behind this are actually Italian, nor are they being altruistic. As the article states:

"why r y'all having chris pratt (a white man) play mario (an italian poc person)," one Twitter user asked.

This is so incredibly stupid. Italians are white, for heaven’s sake! So maybe it’s not really a case of Italians supposedly taking offense at all, but just more incredibly brainless, poorly educated cybertrolls on Twitter looking for excuses to brew up a storm in a tea kettle for nothing, over a cartoon they’re unlikely to see in theaters. Which is only doing Italians a terrible disservice.

I should hope Universal and Nintendo remain firm on their casting choice for Pratt. Besides, Mario is the brainchild of a very fine video game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, and it would be doing a terrible disfavor to him if they turned his creations into political footballs. That should not happen, just like many other nontroversies of the past decade shouldn’t have. I decidedly hope this new cartoon is better than the catastrophous 1993 live action movie starring the late Bob Hoskins, which thankfully didn’t undermine the popularity of the franchise a bit, and it continued to thrive on Nintendo systems for many years after. With the right ingredients, a cartoon can prove far more engaging than a live action film.

Finally Time for ‘No Time to Die’ – What’s Next for 007?

Posted: 30 Sep 2021 04:45 AM PDT

The long-awaited, and frequently delayed No Time To Die film will finally hit UK theaters in a few days. But, as Daniel Craig steps down as 007, what preparations do the producers have for the next James Bond? The franchise’s producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, have teased what might be in store and how the upcoming star will play a role.

Wilson told The Sunday Times:

"Daniel's made an indelible impression. "So it's inevitable that what he brought will be, in some way, incorporated. We don't have any frontrunners — we haven't even thought about it — but whoever it is will take on the role and adapt the character to their personality. It's always been the case."

Broccoli added:

"It's a great compliment people take it so personally. But it's tough on the person that steps in. It's not fair, but it's the way of the world, with the internet being the way it is. Somebody sitting at a computer seems to carry the same weight as the most respected journalist. It's a big decision for us because we're entering into a partnership with an actor."

The producer and daughter of Cubby Broccoli said how casting Bond isn't like finding the best actor at the time, but about resetting the entire template for the movies to come.

Broccoli weighed in: "He's brought humanity. When we used to construct these stories we'd ask, 'What is the mission?'

"But with Daniel, we also discuss what we will put Bond through emotionally.

"Not just physical sacrifice but betrayals, broken hearts. It's a three-dimensional character as opposed to, as Bond is described in books, a silhouette."

No Time To Die hits UK cinemas today, September 30, 2021.

Oof: Mixed Reactions to Netflix’s Live Action Cowboy Bebop Intro

Posted: 29 Sep 2021 04:10 PM PDT

The Cowboy Bebop live-action series, which was first announced in 2018, is an adaptation of the original anime and will premiere on Netflix in November.  John Cho plays Spike Spiegel, Daniella Pineda plays Faye Valentine, and Mustafa Shakir plays Jet Black in the adaption.  There’ve been mixed feelings about the upcoming live-action version of the legendary anime series, but the the streaming giant just dropped the opening sequence which is an emotionless adaptation of the classic anime opener, including the “Tank!” theme tune. The live-action intro was revealed at Netflix’s TUDUM fan event, which is the word they are using to label the noise viewers hear when they start Netflix.

And here is the classic original:

Obviously this opener relies heavily on the original theme music and does NOTHING original. Speaking of music, Yoko Kanno is substantially involved with the program as its principal composer. He’s even planning to write new music for the live-action adaption. But nonetheless, fans of the original series remain skeptical about how the live-action show will turn out.  The costumes and sets unveiled by Netflix in recent months have also appeared to be solid, generally conforming to what was seen in the original 1998 anime created by Shinichiro Watanabe.

Although it didn’t help when Daniella Pineda, plays Faye Valentine, trashed fans who weren’t impressed with the more modest take on her character.

While many of our readers have been understandably concerned about the upcoming series, fans on social media let their own feelings be known about the new series’ opener.

Netflix has a pretty poor track record with live-action adaptations. And the overall history of American remakes of anime films and shows is filled with failures from the live-action Ghost in the Shell or the live-action Dragonball film. What are your thoughts?

Our friends at Clownfish TV have even more to say about this. They seemed to be okay with it, but noticed that the responses generally weren’t good.

Cult of Dracula: Collected Edition on Kickstarter Now

Posted: 29 Sep 2021 02:25 PM PDT

The underground horror comic hit Cult of Dracula made waves in 2021, re-imagining Bram Stoker's classic set within a Manson Family inspired cult. Now, the modern tale of terror is on Kickstarter.com in the form of an exclusive hardcover special edition.

From Source Point Press and Writer/Creator Rich Davis, Cult of Dracula: Collected Edition is promised to be held to outstanding printing standards and made of the highest quality materials available.

"This will be a book that you'll be proud to display in your library. We're holding nothing back with this special edition. Each and every day, you can look at it and say, "I helped make this happen," says Davis.

Cult of Dracula: Collected Edition includes all six issues of the original miniseries from Davis, illustrator Puis Calzada (Hatchet, Willy's Wonderland), colorist Alex Zief (Hatchet, Monster Matador, American mythology: Monsters), and letterer Dave Lentz (Warcorns, Good Boy)

In Cult of Dracula, Special Agent Malcom Bram arrives at the House of the Rising Sun. This secluded compound is the home of the secretive Ordo Dracul and the scene of a horrendous crime coined, "The Cult of Dracula Mass Suicides." Mina Murray leads a documentary film crew to uncover the secrets of the mysterious cult by interviewing its enigmatic leader, Robert Renfield. Neither investigator is prepared for the gravity of the truths they will uncover.

"We set out to do something unique with the Dracula mythology. We wanted to tell our own story while holding true to the original themes and intentions of Stoker's Victorian era tale," says Davis.

Cult of Dracula first released in early 2021, and quickly became an underground sensation, with readers calling it "a refreshing take on classic characters" and "a love letter to the 70s Golden Age of horror films." The series is now set to include two sequels: Rise of Dracula, set to release in December, and Reign of Dracula in 2022. Cult of Dracula is also in development as a TV series from Sure Pictures.

"Cult of Dracula wouldn't be here without an incredible coalition of readers, collectors and comic book retailers who believed in my book when they had absolutely no reason to do so. You embraced Cult of Dracula as your own and you made it an underground sensation," says Davis.

Comic Review: Fantastic Four #36:

Fantastic Four 36

Overview

My Impression of Fantastic Four #36

On the heels of the ‘Bride of Doom’ arc, Johnny has become the main emotional focus. There are a lot of things happening for the hot-shot. His current condition is his own fault. He cheated on his fiancé Sky, breaking her heart and soul bond. As a result of his infidelity, coupled with the honesty and loyalty of Zora, Dr. Doom’s right hand and then fiancé, peace talks with Latveria failed and Johnny has been forced to stay a flamed-on.  The whole of the issue is focused on Johnny and him coming to grips with everything that has happened. Dan Slott has been trying to take readers on a journey with Johnny as he matures and settles down. Every step of Johnny’s arc with Sky has seemingly been a set-up for him to finally mature and perhaps enter a new phase.

This new phase isn’t really emerging though. Instead, with the addition of this issue to the run, Johnny finds himself in the position of Ben Grimm. Seemingly forever flamed on. Will it last? Likely not. The change, for the most part, serves as an obvious metaphor for the emotional and physical damage he’s done to others. In fact, if the flame-on metaphor wasn’t enough, there’s a line by Reed that spells it out for readers; “Johnny Storm doesn’t get to cry”.  And if that metaphor isn’t enough for you, there’s the monstrous transformation Sky goes through as a result. We get it, Johnny is the designer of his own hell.

It’s all his fault and he needs to grow up.

Fantastic Four #36 Final Verdict

I recommend this under one condition; you must have read ‘the Bride of Doom’. This issue is a very nice tie up to Johnny’s infidelity and we actually seeing him face some consequences for his actions. Outside of that? Nope. Dan Slott hasn’t really given new readers a place to jump in during this run, and unfortunately this issue continues that trend. It’s good, but definitely not “new reader” friendly.

Bond Producers Insist the 007 Films Are Meant for the Cinema

Posted: 29 Sep 2021 10:25 AM PDT

With the recent purchase of MGM by Amazon, there has been some concerned over where the studios output may be headed. Would Amazon want the big movies to debut in theaters or on their streaming service? And one of the biggest properties in their portfolio, James Bond, has a new film coming out shortly, the final one in the Daniel Craig era, No Time to Die.

According to Deadline, franchise producer Barbara Broccoli told Sky in the UK: "We focused on making the films for theatrical release and… I think that's our position. [Amazon] certainly have told us that the films will be theatrical films in the future. And we'll see what happens."

Craig, for his part, would've been greatly disappointed if the film had been moved to a streaming debut because of the pandemic. "It would have been sad [to see it on a streaming service], and we got here and we're going to actually get into the cinemas," the actor said.
