The Ratings for Eternals Are Here and They’re Some of the Worst in the MCU

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 09:00 AM PDT

Some movie lovers will see a Marvel movie no matter the plot, who the actors are, or how the reviews sound. After all, if you’re keeping up with the MCU, then you’ve already dedicated yourself to the big mouse behind Marvel. Reviews and ratings can make or break the box office chances for a new film for more casual fans. The latest attention-grabbing upcoming release, Eternals, is starting to see some pretty bad ratings by MCU standards.

What Is Going On With The Ratings Of MCU Addition Eternals?

Eternals was always going to be something a little bit different than the superhero stories that we have come to expect from Marvel. Most new heroes are introduced in their own film (like with Shang Chi) or as secondary characters in an already established hero’s movie. Meanwhile, Eternals is giving us a new crop of characters without an Avenger in sight. There are plenty of familiar faces. This includes Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, and Gemma Chan, among others. Still, they aren’t familiar to the franchise.

The story focuses on an immortal race of Celestial-created beings that are up against evil counterparts. It already has the potential to be a beautiful film cinematography-wise, and the odds of this happening were only boosted when Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) was announced as its director.

Can a visually breathtaking but introductory tale break past expectations to find a critically acclaimed box office success? We don’t know how much money will come out of it, but we can answer the first half. Unfortunately, early reviews are more than a little negative.

What The Ratings And Reviews Are Saying

For a long time, Thor: The Dark World sat at the bottom of the rankings for the worst-rated Marvel movie on Rotten Tomatoes (with 66%), closely followed by The Incredible Hulk (with 67%.) These weren’t a surprise. While they have their charm, they simply didn’t stand up to the expectations set by such a notable franchise. As a comparison, Black Panther (96%) and Avengers: Endgame (94%) lead the winners.

Thor has been dethroned as the holder of this title because the ratings for Eternals are even worse. With a 60% critic score on the platform, we’re left feeling a little confused. Where did the movie go wrong?

Various reviews of Eternals claim that it tried to do something too big while simultaneously creating something that felt like there wasn’t a lot going on. Some call it “unadventurous” and even “one of the MCU’s worst movies in ages.”  There are plenty of positive reviews that concentrate on the humanity behind the heroes, but these are bogged down by the reviews that say it is ultimately a pretty bland film.

Are All Reviews Truthful?

Some films draw negative attention due to on-screen diversity. We saw it happen with Captain Marvel in 2019. MCU fans thought that it was too much of a feminist take on heroism and pandering to a social justice crowd. They especially attacked star Brie Larson, who is outspoken outside of her on-camera life. Unhappy campers would leave negative reviews of the film on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. Oftentimes they would do so without the reviewer even watching the movie! This is what is called “review-bombing,” when people leave bad reviews before a film releases so that they can hurt its chances of success.

Whether Eternals is being review-bombed or not is a highly discussed topic. The film includes the representation of queer characters and has a diverse cast. These qualities have made a few reviewers angrily rush to their keyboards. Some of their words have been deleted, including one review that commented on how the film checks “woke boxes” and nothing more.

So, there may be instances of review-bombing. Some less obvious reviews may be colored by discrimination, too, based on the personal bias of different writers. But we’re less likely to uncover those. As far as Comic Years is concerned, we’re not going to let a few negative reviews keep us from seeing the film. We’ll watch it for ourselves before we make any opinions!

Find out where the ratings for Eternals, the next big MCU film, are coming from when it hits theaters on November 5th, 2021.

Readers, do you let negative reviews stop you from seeing a film? Let us know how these low critic scores impact your desire to head to a theater next week!

How Were The Numbers for Dune on HBO Max? The Day-And-Date Release Strategy Shows the Numbers

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:00 AM PDT

Dune opened to a happy $40.1 million domestic on its opening weekend. These numbers may not have broken any pandemic records, but they were enough to keep the studio happy as it has already earned its necessary sequel. But what about the virtual numbers? Thanks to the day-and-date release strategy, the traditional box office is only one piece of the puzzle. The HBO Max numbers for Dune are here, and it’s proving to land where we expected it to.

What Do The HBO Max Numbers Say About Dune?

Samba TV, a TV analytics firm, has found that an impressive 1.9 million households viewed Dune during its opening weekend. This number puts the film ahead of HBO Max premieres, including Zack Snyder’s Justice League and In the Heights, which had 1.8 million and 700,000 viewers, respectively, on the first few days. However, it does stand quite a long way down from the opening numbers for The Suicide Squad, which opened to 2.8 million viewers.

Fans of theater-only premieres, especially the film’s director, Denis Villeneuve, will be happier to hear that we won’t need to report on these numbers in 2023. The sequel will have an exclusive theatrical window to start, and it won’t find its way to the streaming service for at least a few weeks.

Are Streaming Numbers Hurting The Film?

Entering into the film’s second weekend at the domestic box office and a little bit later for many overseas markets, Dune has found a total of $241 million. This surpasses its production budget of $165 million. We don’t know the exact breakeven point for the film, but this number will typically fall at 2x or 3x the production budget for most major films. So, the closer the film gets to making $500 million, the better its odds at earning its keep.

Can Dune make it this far? Second-weekend predictions are saying that $15.5 million is likely. This marks a drop of 62%, which isn’t terrible considering the dual release strategy. Meanwhile, the overseas numbers are holding up well.  If it continues to make more money in China, the film could potentially sail to $400 million and beyond.

Streaming numbers have automatically lowered the film’s box office potential, no matter what the final sum is. There is less of an urgency to leave the house and head to theaters when it’s already available at the touch of your finger. But this is the nature of pandemic releases, and we only hope that the sequel has an easier time navigating numbers.

You can still contribute to the HBO Max or theater numbers for Dune, which is in theaters now.

Readers, let us know if you streamed Dune at home or went to the theater. And if you did both, then let us know how your viewing experiences changed!

Supernatural Crime Comic Trim Season Coming Next Year

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 05:00 PM PDT

Independent comic company Scout Comics has announced that they’ll be producing the supernatural crime comic Trim Season. The spooky story will be out next year, which is apparently 2022 (???). I guess.

Supernatural Crime Comic Trim Season Growing–Get It?–Out of the High-Stakes World of Marijuana Farms

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story idea started with Megan Sutherland, Sean E. DeMott and Cullen Poythress. David Blair and Ariel Vida took that idea and turned it into a screenplay. Then Jake Hearns in turn(s) completed the chain by writing Trim Season.

But what is the idea that went through these multiple iterations? The dangers of being a “trimmigrant,” or marijuana farm worker, inspired the story. While marijuana is now legal in California, it obviously wasn’t always so. And obviously, at the same time, that didn’t keep people from using, buying, and/or growing it. In fact, a junction of three counties earned the nickname “Emerald Triangle” for being the largest weed-producing region of the entire United States.

Netflix’s docuseries Murder Mountain, about the disappearance of weed farm worker Garret Rodriguez, covered similar territory.

One of these counties is Humboldt. Besides its role in marijuana farming, it’s also noteworthy for something else. A lot of people have gone missing in Humboldt County. While trimming on weed farms is an attractive job (because it can be very lucrative), it isn’t easy. It’s physically demanding, and the isolation makes for easy exploitation.

THR says that “a group of women who went missing” there is the primary inspiration for the story, which will also involve supernatural elements. According to Scout, Trim Season will tell “the story of a group of young people from LA who go to work at a remote marijuana farm only to encounter unspeakable horrors, a sinister family and human sacrifice.” Neat.

In the Meantime, What to Watch and Listen to

Trim Season, which Scout is producing in concert with Execution Posse and MeJane Productions, won’t be out until next year. Still, though, if you’d like some nonfiction background, then you have a couple of options. For instance, you can watch Netflix’s 2018 series Murder Mountain, which covers the disappearance of Garret Rodriguez. Rodriguez came from San Diego to work on a weed farm before he vanished into the mists of Humboldt County. (Rodriguez’s body was later found in a shallow grave.)

This year’s Sasquatch, from Hulu, follows an investigative reporter as he returns to Humboldt to check up on a story. When he was visiting there in 1993, he heard a tale about a–you guessed it–Sasquatch killing three men. Allegedly, a Bigfoot tore them apart. The truth turns out to be even more disturbing than that.

And finally, The Murder Squad, a Salome-approved crime podcast, covered the stories that probably inspired Trim Season. In episodes 71 and 72, hosts Billy Jensen and Paul Holes discuss the cases of the Humboldt Five, a quintet of missing women. As of press time, Jennifer Wilmer, Sheila Franks, Karen Mitchell, Christine Walters, and Danielle Bertolini are still missing.

Trim Season will be available online and in your favorite comic book stores in 2022.

Who Is Doctor Fate? A Look At The Characters In DC’s Upcoming Black Adam Movie

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 01:00 PM PDT

Last year's DC Fandome introduced viewers to the Black Adam panel, something that Dwayne Johnson has been working with DC and Warner Bros. on for more than a decade. The movie was originally supposed to come out later this year, but thanks to several delays, it's now coming out summer of next year. Well, we can now legitimately feel excited because this year's DC Fandome not only gave us a glimpse of the actors and actresses involved in the movie, but we also got to see the first look teaser trailer! It looks amazing, but it also left me wondering…who are these new DC characters? In this series of posts, I'll be looking at these obscure DC characters, although it's likely they'll soon become household names. So first off, who is Doctor Fate?

Who Is Doctor Fate And What Are His Powers?

Doctor Fate (alias Kent Nelson) will be played by Pierce Brosnan and is one of the founding members of the Justice Society, a predecessor to the Justice League. Nelson was the son of an archaeologist and continued in his father's footsteps. They discovered the tomb of the wizard Nabu (an ancient immortal from the planet Cilia) and the younger Nelson ended up being trained by him in the ways of sorcery as a way to fight crime and the evil that is present in society. He's given an Amulet of Anubis, Cloak of Destiny, and the Helmet of Fate that helps him while fighting. His powers include casting spells, super strength, telekinesis, telepathy, pyrokinesis, teleportation, creating force fields, and the ability to travel between parallel Earths. While he can't counteract spells that have already been cast, he's able to cancel elemental spells that are cast by weaker magicians.

The Beginnings of Doctor Fate

The Doctor Fate character was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Howard Sherman, and first made an appearance in More Fun Comics #55 (published in May 1940). There have been several iterations of Doctor Fate, with Kent Nelson being the first and other versions acting as replacements or reincarnated forms for Nabu. In 2015, a new Doctor Fate was introduced. He was an Egyptian-American medical student named Khalid Nassour and he received the Doctor Fate helmet from a statue of Bastet, which turned out to be his cat. Brosnan's version in Black Adam is likely to be the Kent Nelson version.

As mentioned before, the fateful doctor is one of the founders of the Justice Society. It came about when he was part of a group that helped to defeat an assassination attempt on President Roosevelt's life. At the president's request, this group formed the Justice Society of America. While there isn't much on how Doctor Fate and Black Adam's relationship played out in the comics, we can guess that it will probably involve a lot of working together within the Justice Society.

In case you haven't seen the teaser for Black Adam from DC Fandome, check it out below:

Black Adam is coming to theaters July 29, 2022 thanks to Dwayne Johnson's Instagram.
