Don’t Get Your Hopes Up for Disney’s X-Men ‘97 Revival Animated Series

Posted: 16 Nov 2021 06:15 AM PST

The Wrap announced the mid-90s X-Men cartoon is being revived for Disney Plus broadcast. And who’s in charge of production?

Head writer and executive producer on the series is Beau DeMayo. Supervising director is Jake Castorena and supervising producer is Charley Feldman.

The reason why there’s not much point being enthusiastic is because deMayo, the executive producer who previously worked on The Witcher cartoon for Netflix, is one of west Hollywood’s most outspoken homosexual activists, as this post recorded from a site called Geekiary looks pretty favorably on:

After seeing The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, I tweeted my opinion about how Luka followed Jaskier in the sense that both "straight" characters demonstrated the "Making Homo and Sassy jokes = Haha! Funny!" trope.

That's when I got a reply from screenwriter Beau DeMayo about how Luka identified as gay.[…]

For those wondering if there is any queer representation in the popular The Witcher series, well there is. From what I know, we have a gay hunter named Mislav (his story involves a lover who took his own life). The sorceress Philippa Eilhart is bisexual. Ciri, a main character from the franchise, is also bisexual. A number of fans are looking forward to seeing how Ciri's sexuality will be explored in the live-action The Witcher series as she grows older.

And now, this deMayo has been appointed head of a cartoon based on a franchise that’s but one of many that have been hurt by unrestricted LGBT activism, recalling the time when Axel Alonso went out of his way to have a whole gay marriage ceremony written up for Northstar in X-Men nearly a decade ago. Why shouldn’t realists be worried that he’ll see to it the new series engages in LGBT normalization and promotion? I think there’s at least a few more rabid leftists in the production crew to boot, one more reason to feel discouraged.

On a related note, ComicBook says:

Fans of the original X-Men: The Animated Series have always treated it as the gold standard for Marvel cartoons, as it introduced a generation of fans to Marvel’s merry mutants. […]

In what way, exactly? If we were to consider the character designs, they paled horribly next to even the most mediocre Japanese illustrations. And while I recognize fictional characters can’t be blamed for poor characterization, I’ve wondered why Gambit was made into a leading cast member of the 1992-97 series, if only because of how poorly developed he originally was when he began, and why a character like Cannonball from New Mutants couldn’t have been chosen instead. The TV cartoon didn’t boost sales for the comics by any stretch, and considering most X-Men material like Wolverine’s solo book were written for older-skewing audiences, I just don’t see why a cartoon with a similar approach couldn’t be drawn up (IIRC, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics weren’t kiddie stuff either).

But if such ideologues are in charge of the cartoon proceedings in this day and era, there’s no point in expecting the studio to avoid far-left politically motivated storytelling. No matter how kid-friendly or adult this’ll be, extreme politics ruin everything.

Kathleen Kennedy Damaged Star Wars; Disney Just Extended Her Contract

Posted: 16 Nov 2021 04:45 AM PST

Following last week’s reporting that Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars film will be postponed indefinitely, rumors began circulating that claimed that the decision was made due to “creative differences” between the filmmaker and Lucasfilm management.  Media outlets like The Hollywood Reporter claimed that the delay was due to Jenkins’ hectic schedule. Her other obligations, including the upcoming Wonder Woman 3 for Warner Bros., will preclude her from filming Rogue Squadron next year in time for a 2023 release. According to the source, there was optimism that once Jenkins’ schedule cleared, she’d return to finish what she started with Matthew Robinson (Love and Monsters), who was writing the script.

But now word comes from former Hollywood Reporter editor and known insider Matthew Belloni, that the picture was pulled off Lucasfilm’s production schedule due to disagreements between Jenkins and the company. According to Belloni, the challenges have centered on the film’s screenplay, with Jenkins and studio officials, notably senior VP Michelle Rejwan, unable to reach an agreement on how to proceed.

"I talked to a few insiders this week that said the real culprit was the dreaded 'creative differences'; specifically, Jenkins couldn't agree on the script with Lucasfilm executives, including senior V.P. Michelle Rejwan," writes Belloni. "Jenkins wasn't willing to dick around, and she has other projects, notably Wonder Woman 3 at Warner Bros., where she enjoys more creative freedom."

Belloni mentions that a number of agents have previously indicated that prominent directors are frequently eager to sign up for a movie within the Star Wars series, but are repeatedly stymied by “micromanagement and plot-point-by-committee” methods. According to Belloni, this is a “laughably recurring problem” at Lucasfilm.  Even pointing out that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss “bailed” on developing a new Star Wars trilogy, as did Rian Johnson, whose own trilogy was canceled, according to Belloni.

Most notably, the studio fired Phil Lord and Chris Miller while they were filming Solo: A Star Wars Story, and brought in Ron Howard to finish the picture, which remains the franchise’s largest box office disaster, grossing less than $400 million worldwide. Due to creative disputes, Lucasfilm’s work with director Colin Trevorrow for Episode IX also terminated prematurely, resulting in the return of J.J. Abrams and The Rise of Skywalker, not to mention the issues with Josh Trank who was removed from a Boba Fett film, and Tony Gilroy batting clean-up for Gareth Edwards on Rogue One.

Belloni’s subtitle for the article sums it up nicely: “Kathleen Kennedy is one of the most prolific producers in Hollywood history. But it’s time for someone else to manage the Star Wars franchise.”

Disney apparently isn’t listening. They just extended her contract an additional three years.

Rogue Squadron was first announced back in December of last year, with Wonder Woman filmmaker Patty Jenkins heralded as the first female director of a Star Wars film. The film was originally planned to be released in December 2023, but this recent production delay has left it unclear whether it will meet that timeline, or even get made at all. That could mean that the only other Star Wars feature in the works is Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige’s project, which is rumored to be directed by Chloé Zhao who’s Eternals is the worst reviewed MCU film in history.

Indiana Jones 5 has been a disaster, Star Wars is a highly damaged brand, and everything about her endeavors is politicized. Star Wars is still dead, and it’s going to remain that way.

Ridley Scott Joins Chorus of Directors that Loathe Superhero Films

Posted: 15 Nov 2021 04:10 PM PST

There is this trend among directors that haven't worked for Marvel Studios or on a DC project, and that is to talk badly about superhero movies in general. The latest one to speak out is 83-year-old Ridley Scott whose recent film, The Last Duel, was a critical success but a box office disappointment.

In a discussion with Deadline, the director referred to superhero films as "They're f***king boring as S**t." He went on to say that he's done three great scripted superhero movies: AlienGladiator and Blade Runner and says if he can do it, "Why don't the superhero movies have better stories? Sorry, I got off the rail, but I mean, c'mon. They're mostly saved by special effects, and that's becoming boring for everyone who works with special effects, if you've got the money."

Scott joins other notable directors who has said disparaging things about superhero films including Martin Scorsese who referred to them as "theme park rides" and not "cinema" while Dune director Denis Villeneuve said that they've become too formulaic. And James Gunn has recently said superhero films had become “boring“.

What do you think?

Two New Hawkeye Clips: Does the Show Have a ‘Hunger Games’ Vibe?

Posted: 15 Nov 2021 01:15 PM PST

To go along with the Disney+ Day event, Jeremy Renner popped up on Good Morning America to show and exclusive clip from the upcoming Hawkeye series, and it's one we haven't seen before. Here Clint Barton is walking with Kate Bishop as played by Hailee Steinfeld when a mother says to her child, "Look, honey, superheroes. Do you want your picture with them?" Clint turns assuming its him when they kid runs past and over to a group of cosplayers posing that included Hulk, Antman, Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America and Iron Man along with a woman with a bow.

When Kate points out that she's Hawkeye, Clint corrects her that the character is Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games. Which leads Kate to tell Clint that his problem is branding. It's a good clip I that Clint then recaps the series, that people are trying to kill Kate because she decided to wear the Ronin suit and the he's trying to solve the problem so he can go home to his family for Christmas.

Disney also just dropped a clip during last night’s Sunday Night Football schedule that shows how Hawkeye makes his hi-tech arrows.

Hawkeye makes its Disney+ debut with two episodes on November 24th.

Marvel & Sony to Drop Trailer for ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Tomorrow

Posted: 15 Nov 2021 11:10 AM PST

Sony and Marvel are holding a special event tomorrow (November 16th) where they will be premiering a new trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home. The fan event was announced by Sony recently and will be held at the Regal Sherman Oaks at 5 pm PST and is expected to have "other big surprises".

The film has been the subject of a lot of speculation and leaks with a handful of villains returning from previous incarnations of the character including Alfred Molina as Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx as Electro plus word that Green Goblin, Sandman and the Lizard will also appear though Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church and Rhys Ifans respectively have not been confirmed as of yet.

There has also been rumors of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Charlie Cox making appearances and being tied to certain leaks, but again none of that has been confirmed and most of it denied. The belief is that with the film due out on December 17th, this trailer will be the big one that may confirm some of the rumors to help build up excitement over the last month before it's released. We can safely say that Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zendaya and others from the franchise are returning for the third film.

Let’s see what happens tomorrow.

Uh-Oh: “Significant” Reshoots Scheduled for Doctor Strange 2

Posted: 15 Nov 2021 08:20 AM PST

If you've read The Story of Marvel Studios, you may recall that it explains how reshoots are typical in their production process that allows them to tighten up stories and include any new ideas that improve the film. Usually these take only a few weeks.

Recently the entire slate of Marvel movies got bumped back by a slot starting with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and that is likely due to a series of reshoots taking place now through December. Then The Hollywood Reporter posted a story referring to these reshoots as being “significant” and that the cast, lead by Benedict Cumberbatch, are basically on call through Christmas and will be shooting six days a week until they are done.

The production time includes both several reshoots as well as additional photography. It also confirmed that Sam Raimi is still directing, and Michael Waldron is busily writing the new material as he did the initial script. Some of the sources seem mixed on the significance of the reshoots with one saying: "We've had bigger reshoots on other MCU films." Yet another says: "They're here until the end of the year. That's like a whole other movie."

Clownfish TV posted their take on this news last night:

Most of sources seem to be downplaying concerns that the reshoots are retooling the story. Two weeks of the shooting is said to have been held over from the initial production due to one actor's unavailability. Furthermore it's not clear who besides Cumberbatch is involved in the reshoots at this point, but the star mentioned on Jimmy Kimmel Live when he was asked about the reshoots: "Like everything with Marvel, it comes in fresh, pretty much, most mornings. It's really exciting and the film is shaping up to be something special."

Mr. H commented on the significance of these 6-day a week reshoots until the end of the year.
