After Being Cast in ‘The Continental’ Mel Gibson Evades Cancel Culture Again

Posted: 04 Nov 2021 08:15 AM PDT

Mel Gibson will be making his way to the tiny screen in the not-too-distant future. The Oscar winner just landed a role in “The Continental,” a prequel series to the “John Wick” franchise According to Deadline, the three-night miniseries was first commissioned by Starz in 2018, and Gibson, 65, will play a character named Cormac.

Told through the eyes of a teenage Winston Scott, who was played by Ian McShane in the film franchise starring Keanu Reeves, “The Continental” will explore the origins of the hotel for assassins. He is then dragged into the hellscape of 1975 New York City, where he is forced to confront his past.

After the news was announced, some leftists and partisan media outlets quickly pounced on the news to bash the actor over his own controversial past. Perhaps the most severe was at the Daily Dot.

[…]it's surprising—shocking, even—that John Wick's TV spinoff The Continental will star Mel Gibson, a man whose name is synonymous with bigotry and scandal.

But it wasn’t just the Daily Dot clutching their pearls:

Then Daily Dot’s Gavia Baker-Whitelaw breathlessly joined the Cancel Culture chorus herself with the following biased recollection of all the reasons Gibson is a bad-bad man:

Gibson has been accused in the past of racism, sexism, homophobia, and anti-Semitism. He was accused of physically and emotionally abusing his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, who released a notorious 2010 audiotape in which Gibson admitted to hitting her, threatened to burn the house down, used the N-word, and said that Grigorieva deserved to be raped. (Gibson pleaded no contest in court and was sentenced to community service and a fine.)

Coupled with his 2006 DUI arrest (during which he allegedly went on an anti-Semitic rant and sexually harassed his arresting officer), this led to a temporary slow-down in Gibson's career. But over the next few years, he was welcomed back into the Hollywood fold, with Hacksaw Ridge (which he directed) earning six Oscar nominations in 2016. His thriving career is often used as proof that "cancel culture" doesn't exist for A-list stars, and he remains a controversial figure. Hence the reactions to this John Wick news.

An allegation of anti-Semitism, and a no-contest plea for the accusations leveled at him from an unpleasant and apparently violent altercation with his ex-girlfriend, both incidents over a decade old. Cancel Culture is not a forgiving bunch, making it the new religion for the woke. Can’t we show people a little grace? The man has made amends and asked forgiveness. Get over yourselves.

Why These Married Creators Wisely Avoided Working at Marvel Comics

Posted: 04 Nov 2021 06:15 AM PDT

Here’s an interview Israeli cartoonists Maya and Yehuda Dvir did with Makor Rishon several weeks ago, where they spoke about their burgeoning career in art with their online comic strips titled One of Those Days, and they brought up what they’d originally considered doing before they found success with their own creations, which are primarily satirical takes on their own life. I’ve translated this as best as possible from the original Hebrew format:

What was your professional dream before success disrupted your plans?

Maya: “We planned to come to the United States at some point and work for the biggest companies there are – Marvel, Disney and the like. Aim our careers there because as comic artists this is what we think is the top of the profession. Then the series came and suddenly we said, wait, it’s much more, it is worth working for yourself and not for companies that no one knows you are the one who actually draws, because in such places your name does not exist, but only the name of the company.

“When we go to conferences we meet great artists, legends that we ourselves grew up on, and they are in the hat of who we wanted and aspired to be professionally. “Allow it – once you draw for someone, the painting does not belong only to you. So in this aspect we are happy that it came out that way and not in the direction they were directed from the beginning.”

Personally, I think they did the right thing not to go out of their way to audition for Marvel and the like, given the present status of Marvel and DC, to name but some. It’s not just that the Big Two have destroyed all meaning for their creations, but also that they employ people who could be hostile to Israel, like Saladin Ahmed and Sana Amanat. Who knows if the Dvirs would even get the remotest approval for employment, contractually or otherwise, and it makes little difference whether the couple is left or right leaning? I can guess the Dvirs must’ve thought they could build up an art career not unlike say, Terry and Rachel Dodson, but what if their artwork wound up censored in a bad way, and they got what’d turn out to be a horrible assignment on a social justice-laden book? That could give a sour perspective if their art was dumbed down, something J. Scott Campbell’s been in danger of falling victim to. They presumably are aware of Jack Kirby’s only semi-successful attempts to regain the rights to his art drafts decades before, and how, without the right contractual arrangements, they could be out in the cold after the hard work they’d done.

So I wish them good luck in how they’re going about their career now, and honestly, I do wish they could get to work at the Big Two…but not with the ownership and executives dominating them as things stand today. Such echelons are not whom sane people want to work for.

Uh-Oh: Ghostbusters’ Dan Akroyd Joins the Cancel Culture Chorus

Posted: 04 Nov 2021 04:50 AM PDT

Over the last several years, cancel culture has become a major topic in pop culture, attacking any performer or entertainer that doesn’t tow the liberal narrative in regards to social movements or identity politics. Most recently, the controversy over provocative jokes in Dave Chappelle’s newest comedy special “The Closer”.

Well, leave it to a sad has-been like Dan Aykroyd to fall on the wrong side of the issue, as he did while on the press trail for the upcoming “Ghostbusters” sequel, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” in which Aykroyd reprises his infamous role Ray Stantz from the first film. Aykroyd weighed in on the controversy in a wide-ranging interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“There is enough range in humor where you don't have to go scatological and you don't have to go pulling any divisive cards to get a laugh,” said Aykroyd. "There is more intelligent writing that can happen if you stay away from the offensive material.”

Christian Toto of Hollywood in Toto, points out Akroyd’s stunning hypocrisy.

Quick, name your favorite Dan Aykroyd moment.

It might be his impression of Julia Child, bleeding profusely all over her faux cooking set. What about his sleazy salesman hawking children's costumes brimming with glass shards?

Or, perhaps it's his recurring gig as Elwood Blues, half of the iconic Blues Brothers alongside the late John Belushi.

Some of these comic morsels would no longer be permitted in our woke age. Certainly a Blues Brothers pitch today would be derailed as "cultural appropriation," given how the Blues are considered part of the black cultural experience.

All of those iconic portrayals were hilarious in their time, but as Toto points out, if “Aykroyd wants Cancel Culture to reign supreme, he might find his own work on the chopping block.”

“Consider his 1983 comedy, "Trading Places." The film proved a sizable hit for him and co-star Eddie Murphy, but in recent years it's come under attack for its racial humor. In one scene Aykroyd dons blackface as part of a disguise.

Could "Trading Places" get canceled, and his performance along with it? It's certainly possible, especially since plenty of blackface TV episodes got memory-holed last year.”

This is just disappointing on several levels. Sad to see the same Oscar-nominated actor who created many iconic characters from the early SNL days — Erwin Mainway, Fred Garvin: Male Prostitute, and one of the Festrunk Brothers — and proved that, even way back then in the wildest days of the 1970s, he could create potentially offensive characters that could repel criticism with their multi-layers of smart social commentary.

Meanwhile, other famous comedians including Jerry Seinfeld, David Spade, Chris Rock, and John Cleese have all spoken out against cancel culture's toxic effects on stand-up and even Aykroyd's Trading Places co-star Eddie Murphy recently spoke out against cancel culture, saying he shouldn't have to apologize for past jokes.

Aykroyd's unfortunate alliance with “cancel culture” arrives just as his biggest Hollywood movie in years is pending release, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which opens in cinemas next week.

Did ‘No Time to Die’ Pull Back the Curtain on a ‘Cabal of Global Elite’?

Posted: 03 Nov 2021 04:00 PM PDT

For the average moviegoer, James Bond’s latest film ‘No Time to Die’ is an action-packed fitting finish to Daniel Craig’s tenure as 007. But to some astute observers, who believe the pandemic and the government’s response to it, with the rapid elimination of human rights and a growing global dictatorship, the film is another example of Hollywood showing us what evil elites are doing right in front of our eyes and laughing at us for not noticing the farce.

As Stephen Kokx writes for LifeSiteNews

No Time to Die is about a bad guy who creates a bioweapon that can attack people based on their genetic composition. People that become infected acquire nano-robots in their blood stream. They, in turn, become carriers of the virus, which they can spread to others they come in contact with.

Aside from being pretty much like every other Bond film, the plot of this one follows almost to a T what's happening in our world with COVID-19 — even though the movie was developed before the virus was a thing.

As Kokx explains, thousands of people around the world seem to be experiencing severe adverse reactions to these viral elements, just as they did in the movie. Then being given “booster” shots, which some researchers say allow patients to spread the disease and raise their chances of dying from heart problems and a weakened immune system. All the while, there seems to be information leaking out that not all is as it seems.

YouTube Video

Kokx believes the latest Bond film is merely preparing the populace for what we should come to expect:

Hollywood has been grooming the U.S. and global public for decades these sorts of movies, or should I say indoctrination films. Dystopian flicks like ContagionI Am LegendPerfect Senseand many, many others have similar virus-themed storylines that mirror the events going on today.

Marvel and other "superhero" movies are also a clever Hollywood tool used to get normal people to forget about the real, spiritually edifying heroes of history — missionaries, saints, martyrs — and to develop a cult-like following of leftist A-list celebrities.

Kokx may be on to something here, and even goes into further detail when it comes to listening to what the characters are saying:

There's a rather telling scene about three quarters of the way through No Time to Die when Bond comes face to face with the bad guy. They have a brief but highly enlightening conversation about why he's doing what he's doing. Bond tries to convince him of his evil ways, but he responds by saying, and I'm paraphrasing here, that most people want to be told what to do and to let things happen to them, and that men like him are supposed to create their reality for them.

2015’s Spectre was actually another example predictive programming in Bond movies: exposing the masses to an "outlandish" concept so that when it really happens, the public's sense of outrage is already dulled. The film basically showed how an occult elite was taking over the world and imposing a New World Order and our "hero" was effectively a controlled pawn with a microchip in his arm. And James Bond movies are far from the only example of Hollywood pushing this message. The same exact premise is found in Kingsman – another British spy movie that came out in 2015. In both movies, the "bad guys" are the global elite looking to control the world. Yet, in both movies, there are also clear signs that the British spies are strongly connected to them and that the only real losers are the masses, with little to no say about what is happening.

And to quote Blofeld "A terrible event can lead to something wonderful. Out of horror, beauty". Remarkably similar to the occult elite motto: Ordo Ab Chao – Order out of chaos.

Kokx’s final word of advice? “Take Hollywood at its word. Prepare for what they keep telling us is going to happen as soon as you can.”

Chilling.

A Woman Scorned: Carole Baskin Suing Netflix Over ‘Tiger King 2’

Posted: 03 Nov 2021 01:15 PM PDT

Carole Baskin is taking Netflix to court. Baskin sued Netflix and Royal Goode Productions shortly after the release of the teaser for Tiger King 2, the Netflix docuseries that serves as a follow-up to last year’s big hit Tiger King: Murder, Madness, and Mayhem.

Baskin also filed an emergency application for a temporary restraining order, preventing Netflix from utilizing any video of the Baskins and the Big Cat Rescue refuge in Tiger King 2 or any of its marketing materials.

YouTube Video

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Baskin and her husband, Howard, claim that the video used in Tiger King 2 is in violation of the deal they made to film the first docuseries, claiming they were informed it was for one “documentary motion picture” characterized as a “Blackfish style documentary to expose the large cat trade.” The Baskins further claim that the filmmakers shot extra material at the sanctuary without authorization, and that they were not paid for it. They also claim that the final cut was not at all what they expected.

Baskin’s attorney, Frank Jakes, says in the complaint: “Far from being a documentary motion picture that seeks to expose the illicit trade of big cat private ownership, breeding and cub petting, Tiger King 1 is a seven (7) episode series focused primarily upon portrayal of Joe Exotic as a sympathetic victim and Carole as the villain.”

“After Tiger King 1, Royal Goode Productions again approached the Baskins ‘to clear the air’ and, presumably, to entice them into being filmed for the sequel called Tiger King 2,” the complaint also states. “The Baskins refused, believing that the Appearance Releases prevented any further use of their film footage by Royal Goode Productions and Netflix in any sequel. Then, on October 27, 2021, Netflix released its Official Tiger King 2 Trailer. To the Baskins’ dismay, the trailer prominently displayed film footage of the Baskins and made clear that Tiger King 2 would do the same.”

Tiger King 2 is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on November 17, so the Baskins are asking the court to get involved by no later than November 16. This may turn out to be more exciting and dramatic than the show.

Indie Comics Showcase #157: Creepsters, Thin Blue Line, Spells & Superheroes

Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:15 AM PDT

Welcome back to another installment of Indie Comics Showcase, the weekly blog where we signal boost a few truly independent comics that are currently crowdfunding their projects, crowdsourcing their funding in some way, or just completely self-publishing on their own. Every little bit of support for these creators matters, from a single dollar pledge to the twenty-five dollar bundle, and of course the higher tiers are usually fun too! Even if you can’t back a campaign or buy a book, you can share or tweet about these projects to your friends and followers.

On Indie Comics Showcase, we interview the creators, show off some art, and tell you how you can check out the product for yourself. Below we have some outstanding crowdfunding campaigns this week for you to learn about, enjoy, and hopefully support by backing one or more of them! Thanks for checking these out and for being the best part of Indie Comics Showcase. Let's jump in!

Spells & Superheroes
by Markk Mulgrave

Check out the campaign page here!

Chris Braly: Welcome to Indie Comics Showcase, Tell our readers your elevator pitch for Spells & Superheroes!

Markk Mulgrave: Hey Chris, thanks for reaching out! Spells & Superheroes is a superhero-action-fantasy that mashes together beloved caped crusaders and the classic tabletop RPG Dungeons & Dragons!  Our pitch is:  “a deranged Game Master has captured 4 of Earth’s bravest heroes and he wants to play a game…a game for their lives! Can YOU survive game night?”

CB: Where did the idea for this comic come from, and what led to you deciding to crowdfund it?

MM:  Spells & Superheroes was born very organically, meaning the book is a wonderful combination of all my favorite things growing up. Superhero comics, D&D and role playing games, and there is a sprinkle of horror with the villain Game Master forcing our team to play a game that may cost them dearly.  I funded the project myself and the pencils & inks are completed and the book is being colored now. The idea to put the book on Indiegogo made sense to me because I felt the book would resonate with the IGG crowd and the book was fully funded in just under three weeks so I’m stoked that we were able to make it so quickly!

CB: Who do you think this comic will appeal to?

MM: The book takes place in two different settings. The “real” world and the “fantasy” world. The real world version of the characters is their superhero forms. The fantasy version has the team placed as different RPG classes and races and I think readers will love that reveal because it made me laugh pretty good myself!

CB: Let’s get into the creative and production side a little. Tell us a bit about your creative team that have contributed to this project?

MM:  Absolutely! The pencil & inker is the Jacob “Thunder from Down Under”(he demands I call him this) Whittingham. We have the colors done by Anthony Gambino, Anthony is a writer/artist in his own right and recently had a sketchbook out on Indiegogo. Last but not least, the letters are done by Keith Gleason. Keith is the writer/creator of the comic book The Mighty Mascots! I chose Keith because I felt his tone with Mighty Mascots perfectly fit what we are doing with Spells & Superheroes.

CB: Tell us about your Patchwork Comics. How did that come about?

MM:  That’s a tricky one! Patchwork Comics has gone through a few iterations before our debut of Spells & Superheroes. We wanted to make sure we delivered a fantastic first book and a great backer experience. It’s all about making sure the backers get their books in a timely manner, so that next time we release a campaign people know that we are serious professionals at Patchwork Comics! We love comics and telling great stories is our mission.

CB: Are there more stories to tell?

MM: YES! We are heading full speed into the Spells & Superheroes universe with the release of Foxman #1 next year! I expect the prelaunch to go up for that around July/August 2022. I can’t say too much but I have hired an editor to make sure the readers get the best book I can do! Jacob is coming back to draw Foxman and he is very excited to flesh out more of the character he designed almost a year ago now! The purpose of this book is to tell the type of story I have always wanted to see. There are elements of everything that I love in other media in this book Spells & Superheroes.

CB: What have you learned from crowdfunding through this process?

MM:   The moment I launched the campaign and looked at the page I had a “click” moment where I saw some perk structuring I could have done differently, for example. It was just a small thing but it was immediately after hitting the button. The learning experience is almost the entire ride, but it’s been a great rollercoaster and I can’t wait to get back on and do it again!

CB: Thanks for chatting with us, Markk! Good luck and we are rooting for you!

MM:  Thanks for reaching out, Chris! You rock, bro! Thanks to all the backers so far! You rock, too!

Thin Blue Line
by Mike Baron

Check out the campaign page here!

Chris Braly: Mike, tell our readers your elevator pitch for Thin Blue Line.

Mike Baron: Two cops fight to survive a night of riots in a large Midwest City. Assigned to guard the mayor, they are attacked “activists” as they try to hustle the mayor out of the danger zone. Val Baca is a single mom who joined the blue to serve her community. When the mob kills her partner, she teams up with rogue cop Three Jays, trying to protect the mayor.

CB: Where did the idea for this comic come from?

MB: Obviously inspired by the events of summer 2020 and the rise of the “defund the police” movement. You can’t have civilization without civilized people. You’re either for the rule of law or you’re not.

CB: You first came to prominence writing the Punisher for Marvel. Do you expect fans of those kinds of comics will be entertained the most by Thin Blue Line?

MB: Absolutely. In fact, the various Punisher groups on Facebook are very excited about this project. Frank Castle has goals similar to police, but isn’t constrained by the law.

CB: Let’s get into the creative and production side a little. Tell us a bit about your creative team that have contributed to this project?

MB: I’ve known Joe Arnold and Jeff Slemons for years through our comics meet-up groups. I’ve watched Joe mature as an artist and thought that as a working policeman, this would be right up his alley. And I was right. Joe’s also an experienced martial artists which shows in scenes of hand-to-hand combat.

CB: Do you expect there to be some political pushback from media or publishers with the top of this comic being a police officer? What has the response been so far?

MB: As you know, every publisher we approached turned us down. Big surprise. They’re more interested in pushing an agenda than in entertainment. Our first goal is to entertain. Thin Blue Line will enthrall readers from the first page. There is no preaching.

CB: What is your purpose for telling this story and what are your plans beyond this book? Are there more stories to tell in this world?

MB: The purpose of the story is to entertain. However, as John Gardner points out in his book On Moral Fiction, the reader feels cheated if there is a cosmic imbalance. The reader does not want to see virtue punished and evil rewarded. I envisioned this as a one shot but if the reaction merits, I would be happy to write further adventures for Valeria and Three Jays.

CB: This isn’t the first time you’ve self-published and crowdfunded. What have you been learning from crowdfunding and creating through this process?

MB: Comic fans love superheroes! I do too, but the graphic medium is perfect for this story. Just look at the pages.

CB: Thanks for chatting with us, Mike! Good luck and godspeed, sir.

MB: Thanks, Chris!

Creepsters
by Nasser Rabadi

Check out the campaign page here!

Chris Braly: Welcome back to Indie Comics Showcase, Nasser. Give me your elevator pitch for Creepsters!

Nasser Rabadi: Max must save his sister Emma from the sinister CREEPSTERS that wreak havoc on the seaside town of Perdida Cove!

CB: Where did the idea for this comic come from, and what led to you deciding to crowdfund it?

NR:  A comic I thought I was about to crowdfund was canceled because the artist had health issues. Therefore I needed a new idea, and already had a "tiny monster horror novel" idea, which I decided would make a better comic book. I sat down and wrote the first draft under the title "Creepozoids", but after my friend and editor Roy Guntherson read it, he came up with a much better name: CREEPSTERS. Working with Roy was the best experience I ever had creatively.

Toy company Super Asia Fun Toy approached me and asked to read the script, so I sent it their way. They loved it, so we signed a licensing deal and they invested money up front into making the plush toys featured on our campaign. They are great and high quality and shipping immediately (for international backers) after the campaign goes InDemand.

CB: What kind of comic fans do you expect this comic will entertain the most? Where does it land on the genre spectrum?

NR: It's roughly PG13. There's gore and violence but also comedic moments. If you'd let your kid watch Gremlins, this book would be fine for them. It's pretty YA, the art is manga-inspired, and it's got something for everybody.

CB: Let’s get into the creative and production side a little. Tell us a bit about your creative team that have contributed to this project?

NR:  I wrote it and brought it to my editor Roy, who worked countless hours with me to help me fully realize my ideas and help me to make this book the best thing I've ever written. If you read my books in order, this is the one where you'll see the biggest level up.

John Dillard did our main cover, and he's also drawing the ashcan. The main interior artist is remaining anonymous at this time, because I've had people try to interfere with my comic book artists before, so we are making the reveal after the campaign is over. Criss Madd did our awesome horror variant cover, and we've got an awesome painter working on the mystery variant cover.

Soy Rage is the Creepsters wrangler. He has been a huge help promoting the campaign, getting us new supporters, and helped us to make the glow in the dark wristbands.

Super Asia Fun Toy made the toy from John Dillard's design of Chomper—the main Creepster in the book, the one who befriends our main character Max to help him defeat Chomper's evil brothers. They did an incredible job making this, and making the custom mailer, and I couldn't be happier with how amazing it turned out. Super Asia Fun Toy makes the best toys!

CB: What’s the workflow like? How do you like to work?

NR: I like just sitting down and writing. While that's a great way to get all your ideas down, it's also a good way to accidentally write down a bunch of bad scenes too. That's why working with Roy was such a blessing: he helped me to understand what was important, what was not important, and how to show the reader what was in my head, because a lot of my ideas were in my head but not fully conveyed to the audience.

Art is a shared experience. Art can only be great if it gets a reaction from an audience and the audience's reaction is "This comic is great." So to fully have the shared experience with the audience, I needed to learn how to show my ideas. The best way anyone can express that is to ask "Why does this character do X" or "Why does X happen", because if you ask those questions, you'll either realize you had no reasoning (and thus will figure one out), or you will find the best way to show your reasoning, because your reasoning might not already be on the page.

CB: What is your purpose for telling this story and what are your plans beyond this book? Are there more stories to tell?

NR:  I wanted to tell a fun story about family and friendship. I wanted to tell something that I'd like to read. I wanted to write something that was my magnum opus, or something I could be "all about." Everyone has their flagship, and I wanted to find something that I could tell a lot of stories about. Some ideas are very finite or limited, and would only be good for an issue, possibly two. CREEPSTERS is great for dozens and dozens of stories.

Beyond this book I have at least 2 sequels planned to continue this story (even though book 1 has a solid conclusion and ending and could stand alone with no sequels), and will feature Max and Chomper. There'll definitely be spinoffs and tie-ins, like TALES OF THE CREEPSTERS, the ashcan that John Dillard is drawing and is available on this campaign.

CB: You’ve been crowdfunding comics for a few years now. What have you been learning from crowdfunding and creating through this process? Any tips for indie creators who want to do the same?

NR:  Have fun, make friends, give it your best effort and then give even more. Give your everything to your book first and foremost, make sure you have an incredible script, work with great people who deliver, and have a great time promoting your book. Do YouTube livestreams and have fun on them.

Most importantly: Be kind, be amazing.

CB: Thanks for chatting with us! Good luck Nasser!

NR:  Thank you very much! Thank you for the interview, and I know everybody is gonna love Creepsters and the awesome plush toy!

Silly Adult Children Angry About Chris Pratt Voicing Garfield

Posted: 03 Nov 2021 08:40 AM PDT

A new Garfield film is being developed. Chris Pratt has recently been confirmed as the voice of the renowned orange cat in an all-new animated film slated for a worldwide release by Sony Pictures. The script was written by Oscar-nominated writer David Reynolds (Finding Nemo), and Mark Dindal (Chicken Little) will direct, reuniting the two after they previously collaborated on The Emperor’s New Groove.

Garfield creator Jim Davis will executive produce the upcoming film, which will be animated and produced by DNEG Animation (Ron’s Gone Wrong).

Pratt is no stranger to voiceover work, having previously contributed to the Lego Movie flicks as well as the Pixar feature Onward. It was recently reported that he will provide the voice of Mario in an animated Super Mario Bros. film, a job that has elicited conflicting reactions from fans. Pratt posted an Instagram video at the time about how odd it was for him to play that part because he remembered playing the original arcade game with stolen quarters.

Unfortunately, even with these credentials, people who hate Christ Pratt are angry and letting everyone know. Even his own fans didn’t hold back after it was announced. In fact, even the news about the Super Mario Bros. wasn’t well received by Mario loyalists, with one person Tweeting, "Imagine surviving two recessions and a pandemic only to have to endure Chris Pratt as Mario."
