Legendary Queen Guitarist Joins the Anti-Woke Against Toxic Cancel Culture

Posted: 29 Nov 2021 01:15 PM PST

Brian May is best known as the songwriter and guitar legend who backed Freddie Mercury in the British band Queen. The guitar master is also an astrophysicist and a noted environmentalist who has called on musicians to come together again and repeat 2007′s 'Live Earth' concerts, and is a not only a vegan, but is also an anti-Brexit liberal. So it’s surprising to see him on the anti-Cancel Culture team with the rest of us.

As reported by Stephen Crowder:

Of all the celebrities coming out, either intentionally or accidentally, as anti-woke, you wouldn't assume it would be British celebrities. You know, what with England being a socialist hellhole. One that America broke up with, and we are never, ever, ever, getting back together. John Cleese has been vocal . JK Rowling's battle with woke-nincompoops has been legend–wait for it–dary . Now, we can add Queen guitarist Brian May to the list.

May recently spoke out against the Brit Awards removing gender-specific award categories. I'm guessing a producer was afraid of what randos on Twitter would think and made the decision for faux-inclusion reasons. He then drew a comparison with his own band and late frontman Freddie Mercury. Mercury, besides being the greatest vocalist in the history of rock and roll, was out and about gay when it wasn't fashionable to be so. In 2021, that wouldn't be enough.

"We didn't have to stop and think: 'Ooh, now, should we work with [Freddie]? Is he the right color? Is he the right sexual proclivity?' None of that happened, and now I find it frightening that you have to be so calculating about everything. …[Queen] would be forced to have people of different colors and different sexes and we would have to have a trans [person]. You know life doesn’t have to be like that.”

May also discussed social media and how the various platforms offer users ‘instant gratification’, but it also promotes cancel culture. When asked how Freddie would have handled this, he said: “I don't find it easy living in this world today. I think Freddie would have been the same.”

The 74-year-old rocker also added that the legendary band Queen would “struggle to be relevant today” without a “trans person in the band”.

Welcome to the resistance, Brian.

Marvel Studios’ ‘Werewolf By Night’ to Begin Filming in February

Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:55 AM PST

We know that there is going to be a Werewolf by Night: Halloween Special coming to Disney+. Now we’ve spotted the following tweet showing a filming schedule tells us that the working title for the project is "Buzzcut", and it will be filming in Atlanta in February and March, with Gael Garcia Bernal as the star and showing that it's being produced by Kevin FeigeLouis D'Esposito and Victoria Alonso.

There is also a brief synopsis that reads: "A new Werewolf by Night is prowling the Southwest, but all is not as it seems! A young man, a family curse, and an unholy experiment prove a dangerous combination for a small town in Arizona. All young Jake wants is to protect his people, but who will protect him from the monster within?"

According to this synopsis, it reads like they're going with the Jake Gomez version of the character that was just introduced in the comics last year, rather than the original classic character Jack Russell. Also, they refer to him as a young man while Bernal is 42, so it is possible that Bernal is not playing Jake. There have been rumors that Marvel was looking at Hamilton and In the Heights star Anthony Ramos for the role prior to Bernal's casting.

Whichever version they go with, will Disney’s Werewolf tie into the Moon Knight series as the character of Moon Knight debuted in Werewolf by Night?

MGM Has Now Begun the Search for Their Next ‘James Bond’

Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:25 AM PST

With the release of No Time to Die, we have seen the end of Daniel Craig’s run as James Bond, and now fans of the renowned spy have been left wondering ‘what’s next?’ for 007. MGM President of Motion Pictures Pamela Abdy has disclosed that the search for the next actor to don the coveted tux is currently begun, and that work on the next Bond film is still in its early stages.

“It's wide open. We've had very early preliminary conversations with Barbara [Broccoli] and Michael [Wilson], but we wanted Daniel to have his last hurrah.”

Barbara Broccoli had previously claimed that the studio will not begin looking for a replacement for Daniel Craig until 2022, saying that they would begin thinking about the future “next year.” But according to Abdy, the search for the next James Bond has already begun. Maybe something has certainly shifted behind the scenes. Maybe they were all too ecstatic to wait.

So, after Daniel Craig’s highly successful final outing, who could the studio be looking at to step up and lead the franchise? For a long time, ecstatic fans have been expressing their ideal Bond actor, with Tom Hardy, Idris Elba, Henry Cavill, and, most recently, Eternals star Richard Madden and Bridgerton‘s RegĂ©-Jean Page frequently leading the fan-casting list.

Daniel Craig recently offered some solid advice to whoever is chosen to take over, "Don’t f-ck it up."  Hopefully that means that there’s no way in hell they will take Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson seriously on his offer to take the role, no matter what his pedigree is.

“It’s been incredible to do these films,” Craig said back in September. “It’s very emotional. I’m glad I am ending it on my own terms. I’m grateful to the producers for letting me do that. But I sure miss it. I’ll probably be incredibly bitter when the new person takes over.”

No Time to Die is now the highest grossing film of the pandemic era. It may still end up losing money.

Comic Book Media Insists Industry Must “Commit to Change” to Succeed

Posted: 29 Nov 2021 06:15 AM PST

Monkeys Fighting Robots has a dismaying op-ed worrying about superhero comics not changing, and not being committed to the same. Even though Stan Lee once suggested “illusion of change” could work well enough in the context of the serial fiction he oversaw in his time. They say here:

Comic books are a relatively recent medium of art but, unlike other art forms, comic book characters haven't changed much. They have been around since the near beginning and are still thriving today, still protected by copyright law and owned by the same publishers. People have come and gone in that time frame, and these beloved characters have gone on their own path, but not as much as an outside observer would expect. Especially recently, any change in status or lessons learned in superhero comic books are reverted after a short period, leading to many versions of the same story being told repeatedly. There are many reasons why this occurs, but it results in stories without consequences and leads to stagnant characters.

But here’s what dampens whatever point this is supposed to convey:

A prime example of a character in superhero comic books that is often refused the opportunity to grow is Peter Parker's Spider-Man. This can be seen in Dan Slott's run of The Amazing Spider-Man and The Superior Spider-Man. Whether or not you enjoyed Slott's time with Spider-Man, you must give him props for doing something different with the famous web-slinger. For those unfamiliar with the run, Doctor Octopus took over Peter's body, becoming the "Superior Spider-Man" for an enormous portion of the run. Peter was eventually restored to his original body but found himself in charge of Parker Industries — a global company that employed thousands. This was a drastic shift from the typical making-ends-meet Peter we know from his appearances in other media. Slott's run would be a fantastic example to refute my premise that superhero comic books refuse to change, had it ended differently.

By the end of his run, Parker Industries was gone, and Peter was poor once again, bringing back the typical image of Spider-Man that most people have in their minds. One of the only large changes Slott had made to the character was allowing him to finish his graduate degree — a change that was reversed in the first issue of Nick Spencer's run with the character (not including the story he did for Free Comic Book Day). Slott discussed this purposeful reversion of the character in an interview he did with Syfy Wire in 2019. "I always knew his company was going to lie in ruins by the end of the story… I always knew I was going to return it to factory setting before I passed it off to the next guy." This is a kind and considerate action to take when thinking of future writers of the character but results in a dull overall story with no lasting consequences from supposedly earth-shattering storylines.

Unfortunately for this column, it thoroughly ignores how Slott’s run on Spidey was built upon the ruins of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage. Why no complaints how Joe Quesada’s machinations threw out a concept/institution lacking respect these days, of married couples? Doesn’t that count as an example of non-commitment to change, or contempt for it? And how come no dismay expressed at Peter making a deal with Mephisto to obliterate his marriage to Mary Jane? That may not be quite as horrific as some of the physically violent ingredients turning up in DC stories in the 2000s, but it’s still embarrassingly bad to see a hero making such a noticeable Faustian pact with a villain who’s supposed to be Marvel’s variation on the devil. And speaking of DC, they too receive mention in this pretentious column:

One consequence of this noncommitment to change in superhero comic books that permeates most Marvel and DC Comics characters is the feeling of no stakes during huge events. For example, when DC Comics has a "Crisis" event today, it is never anywhere near as impactful as the original Crisis on Infinite Earths. Even if similar situations occur, such as two major characters dying, it still won't have the same effect. Because well-versed readers are aware of how infrequently significant changes stick. Even when the publisher decides to keep a major change, such as Alfred Pennyworth's death in Batman #77, it still doesn't make a lasting impression since it is a "Boy Who Cried Wolf" scenario. We've had Superman, the Flash, Batman (several times), Jason Todd, and Damian Wayne die and then come back to life. Who's to say that Alfred won't come walking out of the tomb any day now?

Here too, I find reason to feel depressed, because it sounds like somebody’s not basing judgement on entertainment value, but rather, on whether characters remain in the grave. Does this mean that if Superman is killed off by the end of next year and never comes back, that’ll be fully acceptable, and cannot be questioned at all? I’m sorry, but this is totally devastating. The reason these crossovers have no more impact today is because many of them only exist to terminate any character, major or minor, who the publishers decide is expendable in their twisted POV, regardless of whether any writer could develop a talented story built around them. Or, the crossovers are produced for introducing politically motivated characters similar to what the recently created Jon Kent, son of Superman, now represents. Anybody who only gets into the medium for these kind of goals has no business working in the industry.

Worst, this op-ed ignores that no matter what one thinks of resurrections, it’s part and parcel of science fiction and fantasy. The subject was in discussion on this Reddit thread, and they cited examples like Madness of Angels by Kate Griffith, and A Fire Upon the Deep, to name but some. There’s doubtless many newspaper comic strips where characters don’t change much, like Dick Tracy, so why do only superhero comics get singled out? That’s exactly what’s ruining them, because you have all these “moralists” forcing political correctness upon the creations, never considering the original creators didn’t exactly intend to have them grow according to their absurd standards, and during the Golden Age, most creators were on tighter schedules, so character development and drama wasn’t exactly an easy thing to accomplish.

Tom King

MFR doesn’t even care that writers as terrible as Tom King oversaw bumping off Alfred, nor do they ask whether it was in good taste to do it in the first place. Or, they never ask why there’s too few stories where characters die from natural causes and auto accidents. And complaining about how it’s the same story all over again, coming from such propagandists, is pretty rich, because all that led to was politically motivated leftism in comicdom, which has since ruined everything.

So this op-ed falls flat, because it takes an approach oblivious to objectivity and merit, refusing to accept how superhero comics were destroyed around the turn of the century by PC advocates who, above all, had no respect for entertainment merit. Failure by commentators who’re supposedly knowledgeable of these mediums to offer a meat-and-potatoes viewpoint is what additionally brought it all down. When “change” is exploited by such PC advocates, that’s how everything collapses.

The Disney Brand Wobbles: Encato Underperforms at Box Office

Posted: 29 Nov 2021 04:45 AM PST

The Thanksgiving box office wasn't quite what theater owners had hoped it would be a few months back. Despite rave reviews, Disney's Encanto, an animated musical with songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, took a nosedive at the holiday box office. The tale of a magic castle in Colombia as of Sunday gross just over $40 million over the full five-day holiday.

The studios cannot blame streaming. This is a theatrical-only, global release. And they cannot place blame it on the pandemic. There are plenty of movies opening just fine.

Originally, the Paramount film Top Gun: Maverick was slated to debut this week, but that picture got moved leaving Disney's animated feature Encanto to be the biggest new release over the holiday, with its only real competition being last week's number one film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife which took in another $35.3 million over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Odin’s Movie Blog had the following to say:

YouTube Video

John Nolte of Breitbart shared a few of his own theories on what he believes led to the stumble of Encato.

[…] this is what happens to an industry that's lost touch with its audience. Outside of Manhattan and Los Angeles, no one knows or cares who (songwriter) Lin-Manuel Miranda is. And those of us who do know him find his woketardery obnoxious and off-putting. He's not here to entertain. He's here to lecture!

So why did Encanto flop?

I have no idea.

Nolte continues with how he thinks the Hollywood media is going to try to spin this failure, and why it won’t work:

Although I'm sure the far-left entertainment media will soon blame this failure on "racist" Americans ignoring a movie set in Colombia, that holds no water. Disney's Coco (2017) was set in Mexico and grossed $210 million in the U.S. and almost $900 million worldwideDisney's Moana (2016) was set in Polynesia and grossed $250 million in the U.S. and nearly $650 million worldwide.

Whatever the reason, here's what should worry Disney…

Disney couldn't open this sucker.

If there is one area where the Walt Disney Co. outshines all others, and by a country mile, it is/was the ability to open a movie. Not only is the Disney brand itself magic, but Disney has the greatest opening machine we've ever seen.

Well, not so much anymore, and I blame Disney's Woke Nazism for tarnishing the brand, for monkey-wrenching the machine.

Disney's brand problems began with squatting over its Star Wars brand and dropping a dump of woke all over it.

Disney's brand problems got worse when these fascist China-humpers blacklisted Gina Carano for the sin of rejecting servitude on the Woke Plantation.

Disney is open and strident about its racist and intolerant left-wing politics.

Disney is destroying the innocence of children with its appalling embrace of sexual politics.

And now Disney has no Star Wars film franchise, its streaming service is under-performing, its Marvel franchise has stumbled, and it didn't open a no-brainer like Encanto.

Disney has worked overtime to tarnish a once trusted and beloved brand by all Americans, most especially parents.

Disney used to entertain and inspire. Now it lectures and perverts, and those chickens are coming home to roost.

Another new film for the weekend, House of Gucci pulled in $21.8 million over the five-day period. Rounding out the top five was Eternals with $11.4 million and Resident Evil: Raccoon City with $8.8 million. Not wanting to miss out on the family friendly weekend, Universal snuck their film Sing 2 into 1,000 theaters yesterday at 5 pm for one showing and according to Deadline, the gross was great and will be rolled into it's opening weekend total on December 22nd.

Chappelle Not Backing Down: Woke Cancel Culture is Losing

Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:10 PM PST

Chappelle visited his old high school last week , and Politico reports that the event at Duke Ellington School of the Arts apparently hosted several easily triggered children who offered pushback over their perceived offensiveness of a few of the jokes in his last Netflix special The Closer. Speaking to an auditorium of 580 students, the comedian faced a few tantrums regarding his jokes that involved transgender people.

One student actually called him a bigot, saying, "I'm 16 and I think you're childish, you handled it like a child," referring to responses to criticism of his Netflix special. Another student  said "your comedy kills."

YouTube Video

Chappelle replied, "My friend, with all due respect, I don't believe you could make one of the decisions I have to make on a given day." Later he added, "I'm better than every instrumentalist, artist, no matter what art you do in this school, right now, I'm better than all of you," jokingly adding that he was “sure” one of those students would be "household names" one day.

According to a spokesperson from Duke Ellington school, the hostile questions created a distorted picture of the event, and Chappelle's supporters were a "silent majority" in the audience, as Chappelle's critics were prioritized for the Q&A.

"During the conversation with students and staff, Chappelle specifically invited the voices of discontent to ask questions, however as a result, the supporters of Chappelle became the silent majority," the school’s spokesperson told Politico.  "Our principal was approached by several students after the assembly who were disappointed that they were not able to voice their support for Chappelle in this forum."

But so-called “cancel culture” isn’t impacting Dave Chappelle. The controversial comedian scored a Grammy nominations  the same day as his appearance at the school. Chappelle scored a nomination in the Spoken Word Album category for 8:46, a performance about violence against black Americans that he did with Amir Sulaiman.

Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ Passes $100 Million at Domestic Box Office

Posted: 28 Nov 2021 02:10 PM PST

In a benchmark that was to be expected, Warner Bros./Legendary's feature adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune has clocked past $100 million at the domestic box office. This brings the global running total to north of $370M; the ultimate exclamation point here for the Denis Villeneuve-directed movie being $400M WW. Dune made $400K on Thanksgiving yesterday, sending its domestic total to $100.1M, Deadline reports.

Just because Dune crossed this threshold stateside doesn't mean it's a victory lap for the studio's controversial theatrical-day-and-date HBO Max 2021 strategy (Villeneuve's Canadian homeland had Dune on an exclusive theatrical window during its run there). The mind wonders how much more money Dune could have made. Dune crosses $100M in its 35th day of release, making it the second movie to go past the century mark on Warner's annual slate after Legendary's Godzilla vs. Kong (which made that amount of money in 12 weekends of release).

While Dune was on HBO Max during its first 31 days in theaters, it's now exclusively theatrical, currently playing in 1,312 theaters with a Thanksgiving weekend outlook of $2.26M over three days and $3.2M since Wednesday which will bring its running U.S./Canada total to $102.4M by Sunday.

Warner Bros. is injecting some extra steroids into the all-star ensemble, booking it back into Imax auditoriums on Dec. 3. The movie had 73 minutes shot in Imax, and the large format exhibitor drove 22% of the movie's $41M opening weekend ticket sales, and 20% of its overall domestic total, 13% of the pic's overall global tally.

Also on December 3, Dune will be available for early premium digital ownership at home for $29.99 and for 48-hour rental via PVOD for $24.99 SRP on participating digital platforms where you purchase movies. On January 11, Dune will be available on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD and will also continue to be available to own in high definition and standard definition from participating digital retailers.

R-Rated Version of ‘Birds of Prey’ Not Available on HBO Max

Posted: 28 Nov 2021 12:55 PM PST

Not that many people want to, if anyone decides they want to watch the R-rated version of Birds of Prey, they’ll need to go out and buy the Blu-ray, as the R-rated version is apparently not available on HBO Max. While one version of the Margot Robbie-led film is currently available on HBO Max, according to one report, many viewers who went to watch it realized that it’s an edited version, making the streaming cut much more TV-friendly. This is more than a bit strange given that this is for HBO Max, which includes additional R-rated programming, and no formal rationale for the restriction has been provided.

When you start Birds of Prey, a graphic appears on the screen highlighting that the film has been altered from its original form, announcing right away that it has been edited for content. In fact, everything in the film that led to its R rating has been deleted, including the several swear words, which have been dubbed over or omitted. Other more mature visual gags have also been censored, including Renee Montoya's "I shaved my [testicles]" shirt and Harley Quinn flashing her middle fingers.

This isn’t the first time viewers have noticed this kind of edit. When The Evil Dead was recently added, many fans noticed a more subtle change: a demon’s arm strangling a lady on the cover artwork had been completely deleted and other viewers have commented on seeing modified edits of other R-rated films such as Spawn and Saw VI.

Clownfish TV comments:

YouTube Video

Despite the critical disappointment, poor reviews, and the incredibly bad box office, the Birds of Prey story will be explored in another spinoff starring Jurnee Smollett as Black Canary. This project is apparently in the works for HBO Max, and WarnerMedia may have intended to test the waters with an edited version of Birds of Prey to have a better sense of which rating they should aim for with the Black Canary film. In any event, if you want to watch Birds of Prey on HBO Max, be aware that you will be seeing the edited-for-television version.

Trust us, you don’t want to waste your time on ANY version of this shit show.
