Live Action Uncle Iroh Cast For Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, Plus Two Other Characters

Posted: 17 Nov 2021 09:41 AM PST

When Netflix first announced that they were working on a live action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, fans were cautiously optimistic. The original creators of the series, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were on board, so it couldn’t be terrible right? Then, DiMartino and Konietzko announced that they were leaving due to “creative differences” and people really started to worry. Not another M. Night Shyamalan disaster! However, as Netflix has shared more about the series, it actually doesn’t seem bad. The casting for the four main characters (Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko) looks great and they recently announced that Daniel Dae Kim (!) would be playing Fire Lord Ozai. Now there’s even more exciting news! A live action Uncle Iroh has been cast and they chose Kim’s Convenience‘s Paul Sun-Hyung!

Besides Uncle Iroh, Who Are The Other New Live Action Avatar Additions?

Sun-Hyung, who rose to fame playing the loveable Kim family patriarch, Appa, on the Canadian hit show, Kim’s Convenience (which is also where Shang-Chi star Simu Liu got his start), is the perfect person to play Uncle Iroh in my opinion. Airbender fans love Uncle Iroh for his seemingly endless wisdom and adoration of tea and the game pai sho. He is the older brother to Fire Lord Ozai and acts as mentor to his nephew, Zuko, and is integral to helping him along a better, more peaceful path. Sun-Hyung already has the father figure down pat, so playing Uncle Iroh should be second nature!

Besides Sun-Hyung as Uncle Iroh, it was also announced that Ken Leung (Lost) will play Commander Zhao and Lim Kay Siu (Nightwatch) will play Gyatso. Commander Zhao was the Fire Nation military officer who served as the show's first major antagonist. Gyatso was the wise Air Nomad monk who serves as Aang's teacher 100 years before the young Avatar meets Katara and Sokka.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Is Working With Some Exciting New Technology

As if we couldn’t get more excitement, we also learned that the series has started production and the showrunners are using some of the same VFX technology used in The Mandalorian. Netflix said:

"The state of the art stage, designed and operated by Pixomondo ("PXO") Virtual Production, is 84 feet across and 28 feet high with 23,000 square feet of stage space and more than 3000 LED Panels, making it one of the biggest virtual production volumes in North America."

If you want a sense of what kind of quality we’ll be getting, just know that Pixomondo won several Emmys for its VFX work on Game of Thrones and Martin Scorsese’s film, Hugo.

Sun-Hyung, Leung, and Siu join Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. Albert Kim will act as showrunner, executive producer and writer on the series, with Rideback's Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore executive producing, along with Michael Goi. Roseanne Liang is co-executive producer. Goi, Roseanne Liang, Jabbar Raisani and Jet Wilkinson are directing.

There's no official release date for the live-action reboot of Avatar: The Last Airbender, but you can watch the entire original series on Netflix.

What do you think of Netflix’s choice for the live action Uncle Iroh? What about Commander Zhao and Gyatso? Let us know in the comments below!

Review: Arcane Act Two Deepens The Plot, The Threats And The Tragedy Of Its Heroes

Posted: 17 Nov 2021 06:20 AM PST

Arcane is quite possibly the biggest surprise of this year. A video game adaptation that came out of nowhere and is blowing minds, expectations and changing the game. Literally. Because, even without the industry upheaving animation style that took years to complete, Arcane's story is nothing short of brilliant. The creators take an approach to this show that was serious in every possible way. And their love for the subject material is evident in the show. With act one already released on Netflix, read on for my Arcane act two review, which compromises episodes four to six of the series.

Please note: there will be some act one spoilers coming up in this Arcane act two review. Please read my non-spoiler review of act one, before diving into this.

Arcane Act One Recap

Arcane act two review council.

Image via Netflix.

Arcane is all about the socio-economic difference between the city of Piltover and the undercut Zaun. Piltover houses the rich and elite, while Zaun is home to the downtrodden of this dual society. In act one, we met Vi and Powder, two orphans trying to survive. But when they come across a magical gem, it kickstarts a chain of events that leads to a drastic shift in the dynamic of this society. A scientist named Jayce harnesses the power of the gems to create a new source of technological magic, promising to bring even more prosperity to Piltover. While Silco, an industrialist in Zaun plots to take over Zaun and overthrow those in power up above.

Caught in the middle are the two sisters, who end up involved in the fight. In an attempt to save her found foster family, the bumbling young sister Powder attempts to harness the power of the gems. The resulting accident kills almost all their foster siblings and the man who took them in all those years ago. Unable to contain herself Vi loses it on Powder, calling her a jinx for always ruining everything. This, after years of defending, sticking up for and protecting her from the wrath of others. Vi is arrested, while Powder seeks refuge from her sister's betrayal in the arms of Silco, the villain of Arcane's story.

Act Two Of Arcane Begins With A Time Jump

Arcane act two review Jinx.

Image via Netflix.

League Of Legends’ Arcane act two starts off with a fast forward by a few years into the future from where we left off in act one. The shift in the status quo after the previous act's events is fully realized. Piltover has become an even more powerful city, given their use of Jayce's Hextech to become a hub of progress for the world. While Silco has solidified his dominance into Zaun, with the help of his monster-turning Shimmer drug, and a surprising new ally.

The politics of the world takes a more prominent significance in this episode as the world is fleshed out more. We spend a lot of time in the science academy as Jayce becomes wrapped up in the manipulative nature of government. With larger plans for Hextech, Jayce has trouble reconciling his ideals with what the world needs, now that he's introduced such a dangerous invention to the world. It's complex, layered and difficult to navigate. Along with other things.

Arcane Act Two Review Focuses On A New Character

Arcane act two review gun

Image via Netflix.

One of the more surprising aspects of Arcane Act Two is how a minor character from act one rises to prominence. Caitlyn (Katie Leung) initially just a friend of Jayce's becomes an Enforcer, basically a cop in this world, and becomes the driving force of this act. Coming from a rich family, Caitlyn's background while doing a more blue-collar job, makes her the subject of a lot of derision. But she attempts to rise above it all by being professional and loving her job. When Jayce's (Kevin Alejandro) new tech gets stolen in an act of terrorism, Caitlyn is on the case. While her boss, Marcus (Remy Hill) another low-level character from act one who is now sheriff, tries to cover it up.

While the larger machinations of act two deal with the criminal underbelly Zaun, the political deception of Piltover and how fragile the situation is getting, Caitlyn is unknowingly picking away at those scabs. Her investigation takes her to an unlikely source who can help her navigate the undercity, while she has to learn to shed her proper upbringing and get her hands dirty to uncover the truth.

What An Impressive New Series

Arcane act two review Caitlyn.

Image via Netflix.

I'm constantly blown away by how impressive Arcane is. While the character story of Vi and Powder was on full display in act one, act two develops the world more. Which, I suspected would happen. The time jump shows us where Powder (Ella Purnell) is now, and just how the events of act one traumatized her to the point where she is now. Tortured, stressed out and very much carried the burden of those events with her at all times.

Whereas Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) has her own demons she's wrestling with. Her journey has made her tougher, and more of a badass from act one. Steinfeld is so impressive here and I think I will associate her with this role going forward. This brings us to the awesome action of Act Two

Act Two's Action Sequences One-Up The Previous Act

Doing a review of Arcane act two is difficult, given having to walk around the spoiler reveals and journeys of the characters. But I can go on about the action for days. The brutality and choreography are larger in scope than act one. There are a lot more one-on-one fights, amazing chaos in the form of a raid in the opening episode. And a lot of guns and explosions in this act as well. It's all done so incredibly well that you can just watch them over and over on a loop, to experience its greatness continuously.

Arcane keeps impressing with its amazing details to the visuals, its layered world and story. Not to mention the characters and their relationships which just continues to be some of the best writing I've seen in a long time. A must watch for cinephiles and loves of good storytelling everywhere.

Arcane act two is now on Netflix. Act three premieres on November 20.

What did you think of the second part of this new animated series? Let me know in the comments below.

Early Impressions: Halo Infinite Multiplayer Launch Review

Posted: 17 Nov 2021 03:43 AM PST

In coordination with the celebration of the original Xbox console turning 20, Microsoft brought us a huge surprise. Okay, if you saw rumors and leaks about the big surprise, then it wasn’t all that surprising. Still, we got Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer mode over three weeks early! The History Of Halo is largely based on the success of its multiplayer mode. Given that the last mainline Halo game, Halo 5: Guardians, really lacked the wow factor fans wanted, this new release has a lot riding on it. Given that the most important game mode of the series’ most consequential game launched early, I spent the bulk of the last 24 hours getting a taste of everything available right now. While these are early impressions of a dynamic experience, here is our Halo Infinite multiplayer launch review for the content you can play right now.

Halo Infinite Multiplayer Kicks Off With a Great Foundation for Success

Halo Infinite Multiplayer Launch Review

Halo Infinite looks and feels like the experience so many of us know and love. It’s also noticeably crisper, cleaner, and modernized in all of the right ways. The UI for Infinite’s online multiplayer experience looks great within matches. Environments, weapons, and characters also feel very akin to what I’d expect on latest-gen consoles.

Of course, looks aren’t everything, especially in a game that thrives on fast-paced firefights and cut-throat gunplay. The familiar elements of Halo‘s multiplayer look and feel improved in just about every way. The experience of playing this series online is something that is very nostalgic for a number of players. The cool thing about Infinite so far is that it feels more like the Halo I love than the previous title. Best of all, matchmaking is a breeze and plenty of players are already online, allowing for endless content. Within 8 hours of release, VGC reported that over 270,000 concurrent players were logged on Xbox and PC.

It’s a promising start to the game mode most will spend their time on in Halo Infinite. That said, there are a few things we need worked out before this is a pristine experience.

Battle Pass and Playlists Still Need Work

Halo Infinite Multiplayer Launch Review

My biggest gripes with the game while working on this Halo Infinite multiplayer launch review were certainly the battle pass system and the game mode playlist.

Beginning with the latter, the current playlist mixes in a number of team-based game modes. While Oddball and Capture the Flag are fine, I’d prefer to play straight Slayer mode, the series’ deathmatch experience, either in a free-for-all or team format. I’m guessing we’ll get the ability to choose our match modes of choice by launch. Still, with the insane amount of players already in the game, there’s no reason for 343 Industries to worry about matchmaking. If they can mold it into a catered experience akin to what Call of Duty Vanguard’s multiplayer mode offers, then I’ll be thrilled.

The other glaring downside to playing Infinite‘s multiplayer mode right now is the Battle Pass system. Like other modern multiplayer experiences, a Battle Pass allows the developer to include cosmetic items for purchase as well as an incentive for players to keep playing the game. Halo Infinite Season One multiplayer content is themed around Reach. At the moment, however, the progression system is painfully slow. After a few hours of playing, I still sat at level one in the season’s player rankings.

After wondering why I wasn’t leveling up sooner, I realized experience only comes to players via Challenges. Winning a match, or simply playing one, nets you nothing. I hope this is changed soon, and given the number of people griping about it online, I think 343 Industries will listen.

The Full Game and Campaign for Halo Infinite Launch December 8

Halo Infinite Multiplayer Launch Review

I’m not scoring this review simply because this all comes after a day or so of playing Halo Infinite. If it was a scored experience, then I’d likely sit above a 7 at least. That said, it’s important in these stages to share the positives and negatives while not allowing them to determine the state of the game. The mode is still being referred to as a “multiplayer beta” at this point by Xbox. Still, things are promising even in this semi-official stage of development.

If multiplayer is getting you excited for the full game, then don’t worry! We’re in the home stretch awaiting the official Halo Infinite release date of December 8. There’s a ton to look forward to with the game, especially for long-time fans. I wasn’t in the camp of gamers who hated Halo 5, but it certainly wasn’t a home run. The “back to basics” approach to Halo Infinite seems to be the right move. As we see with the battle pass system, however, there will be some kinks to work out.

As far as the full game goes, a recent campaign overview certainly offered up what we’re looking for as Halo fans. I guess I can’t speak for all fans, but it’s certainly more promising than that initial E3 Gameplay Premiere. When we finally get a chance to check out the game in its full glory, it’ll be nice having had a few weeks to brush up on our skills in multiplayer.

If you’re excited by what you’ve played or seen so far in Halo Infinite multiplayer, then let us know in the comments. Thanks for reading Comic Years for all things gaming, comics, and pop culture!

The Flash Season 8 Premiere Kicks Off Crossover Armageddon Event On The CW

Posted: 16 Nov 2021 09:36 PM PST

After both the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event and then the COVID-19 pandemic, the Arrowverse grew more distant. Following the DC on CW 'Endgame,' event and the loss of flagship series Arrow, crossovers haven't happened. Black Lightning and Supergirl both ended without cameos from other series' stars like the Arrow series finale. And these were the kind of quick cameo crossovers the end of the Crisis event was meant to facilitate. In 2021, the premiere episode of The Flash for season 8 is not just the start of a new season, but also marks the beginning of a new kind of CW crossover. (That's a lot like the first crossovers, actually.) We may not end with a classic mass hero team-up, but instead we will get to enjoy seeing familiar characters for an episode or two throughout the story arc.

The Flash Season 8 Premiere Episode Armageddon Event Part 1 Despero Tony Curran

Image via the CW

Tony Curran, who you might know as Vincent Van Gogh from Doctor Who, makes his debut as a classic DC Comics villain. This version of Despero seems to be very different from what we know though. In fact, as far as I know, he's more of a Justice League foe than a member of the Flash's rogue's gallery. Though, we do get to see some classic dopey rogues who are always used when storytellers want to give DC heroes an easy W. The Royal Flush gang return, and we get to see the kind of Flash a lot of fans want to see.

We also see the return of Brandon Routh, known both for playing Superman and Ray Palmer, the Atom. He left DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and he made it clear he (like certain Doctors Who) didn't want to go. So, it's great they brought him back. He kills it as a superhero.

Spoilers to follow.

The Season 8 Premiere of The Flash Is Light on the Armageddon Event Business

Most of the Season 8 premiere is light on the crossover and more focused instead on Team Flash. Ray shows up early in the episode, before the first act break, but he's just in town being quirky and awkward. This storyline both helps make sense of the lack of crossover in this shared universe and is perhaps a meta-commentary on the real-world. Ray talks about enjoying his time out of the superhero arena, but he also misses it a great deal. There's a seemingly throwaway line about how he hasn't spoken to the other Legends in some time. This is genius because we often ask where other characters are in these shows. We know the real-world answer, but the narrative explanation is that, just like in real life, staying in touch can be hard. At least the Legends have the excuse of being in different time periods.

Still, much of the episode is focused on character. New members of Team Flash, Kayla Compton's Allegra Garcia and Brandon McKnight's Chester P. Runk are growing into their roles. We also see Carmen Moore's metahuman police captain Kristen Kramer interacting with Barry, who she doesn't know is the Flash. (This will probably change because, as this episode proves, Barry reveals his identity to like everyone.) There is a lot of focus this week on characters "leveling up," from Barry with his powers, to the Royal Flush Gang, to Allegra and Runk. This is a fragile time for the series with the loss of Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanaugh (as regulars), so these characters' journeys are perhaps the most important in the show right now.

The show could wind down with the legacy characters in "good" places. But it can also evolve and grow with the characters. Let's hope it's the latter.

What the Armageddon Event Could Be About for The Flash

The Flash Season 8 Premiere Episode Armageddon Event Part 1 Grant Gustin Brandon Routh The Atom Barry Allen

Image by Katie Yu via the CW

Despero shows up with his wild power set and mental powers and shows Barry a vision of the future in which he's running the Earth to death. (Comic books!) In classic Grant Gustin Flash fashion, rather than fighting the villain, he reveals his identity and wants to befriend him. Obviously, this plan will go south, but it maintains that on Earth-Prime, Barry is as pure as a Kryptonian. Yet, in the trailer we've seen showing Cress Williams as Black Lightning, it seems that Barry is having a crisis, this time, of faith. The Arrowverse, if the name isn't clue enough, took its cues from the iterations of the Justice League that has Batman as the leader.

Yet even though we have a Superman in this universe, Flash is that Superman figure. He's the character that's been around the longest, save for Caity Lotz's Sarah Lance. He also is the kind of champion of compassion in this show that Superman usually is. So, I think the ultimate result of the Armageddon Event will be to level Barry up as a leader. On Team Flash, for like the last five seasons, the actual Flash is rarely in the 'lead,' at least compared to how Oliver Queen used to run his squad. While that works for the people he's in the trenches with every day, Armageddon will establish Flash as the leader of all superheroes on Earth-Prime. Remember, he's the one who set up the cool Justice League table, after all.

Outside of the narrative, if this event is a success, this could be how the CW keeps actors and characters in roles without series. They also could do multiple crossover events, confined to a single series, more than once per season. Rather than winding down, the DC universe on the CW might be entering a new, bigger 'phase' than ever before.

The Flash debuts new episodes Tuesdays on the CW.

The New Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer Is Here, And So Are Some Old Friends

Posted: 16 Nov 2021 07:55 PM PST

The new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer is finally here and it's perfect. This whole movie's publicity process has been so bananas, but one month before it comes out in theaters, the new No Way Home trailer is here. There's a lot to look at now that they finally got off that bridge.

What the New Trailer Tells Us About Spider-Man: No Way Home

Peter must have done a lot of souvenir shopping during Far From Home because there's a lot to unpack now that he's back in New York. The trailer starts off with a voiceover from Peter talking about how brutal his life has been. He's miserable, which is about 50% of what goes into any Spider-Man. There's some exposition by Dr. Strange. Peter talked so much he destroyed the fabric of reality. Standard Spider-Man stuff. That’s when the “visitors” start appearing.

New Spider-Man No Way Home Trailer

Image via Marvel Studios

Then it's the scene from the teaser with the pumpkin bomb rolling onto The Bridge and Willem DaFoe's incredible laugh. No Way Home built so much punishing anticipation by showing this scene in the teaser and then giving us nothing but a poster (and a ton of leaks.) One botched spell and the fragile universe is tearing open and villains from every universe are coming in.

The Gang is (Almost) All Here

No Way Home is bringing back villains from 5 different Spider-Man movies from two other franchises. This trailer confirmed what everyone has been saying pretty much since the day the teaser dropped and people saw yellow lightning in the poster. Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, The Lizard, Electro, and Sandman are back. It's the Sinister… 5.

The marketing for No Way Home has done its very best to leave some questions unanswered. The problem is that it did that by leaving 3 perfectly-shaped holes that are so clearly cut around so we kind of already know what's coming. There are a few contenders for who the 6th villain is going to be, but there's definitely going to be a 6th one. You don't just pull in 5 members of the Sinister Six and leave it at that. The Fearful Five doesn't have the bite. There's a possibility it'll be Venom from one universe or another, or they'll make my dreams come true and resurrect Dr. Octavia from Spiderverse to be the much cooler counterpart to Doctor Octopus, even if he just stole some of Peter’s nanobots and gave his arms a new paintjob. It also kind of looks like the Green Goblin from the Marc Webb movies is actually in the trailer, but he's a bit blurry, possibly because he knows he can't live up to DaFoe. The unconfirmed last villain isn't the only gap though.

New Spider-Man No Way Home Trailer

What's a Spiderverse Without The Spiders?

The new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer finally took us off The Bridge. Doctor Octopus gets razzed in what looks like a subway tunnel. Electro T-Poses near some power lines and rocks the perfect electrified version of his mask from the comics. Sandman does his best impression of the Mummy from The Mummy.  And MJ looks like she's getting Gwen Stacied as we get a lingering shot of her falling from some scaffolding with Peter just barely too slow to save her. Another shot shows Doctor Strange struggling to hold something from tearing through the fabric of the universe, even though all the villains are already present and accounted for in that scene. All this combines to make a few perfect cookie cutters in the shape of the most anticipated and worst kept secret of this movie. The other Spider-Men are here. They're just not in the trailer.

New Spider-Man No Way Home Trailer

Image via Marvel Studios

It's all but confirmed that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire are going to be in the new Spider-Man. There’s been all this talk, even from Tom Holland, about a mystery character, but it’s all but settled who that could be. Or at the least the type of person it probably is. Ignoring the leaked images that gain more and more credibility as we see the exact setting the leaks supposedly captured. Ignoring the coy comments from Spider-Men past when they're asked if they'd ever reprise their role. Ignoring all that, the entire cast of villains comes from other movies. It would be so weird to pull dead villains from the other universes and not pull out their potentially living Spidery counterparts.

The trailer ends on the top of the Statue of Liberty, with Doctor Strange failing to stop the probably-Spider-Men from breaking into their universe to duke it out with the ghosts of their slain nemeses. Spider-Man: No Way Home comes out in a month, and that's a long time for some of these unanswered questions.

Lingering Suspicions

There’s a lot here, and we all need some time to really process it, but there are a few big things we can’t ignore. First, is the 6th villain actually just a second Goblin? That would be such a chaotic power movie after the ending of Let There Be Carnage put Venom in the same universe as Spider-Man. It would also be brilliant misdirection to have this actually be a play for the Sinister Twelve, but that seems a little crowded. But if it gives us a chance to have Michael Keaton's Vulture back, I'm so down.

Second, all the ingredients are there for Matt Murdock's Daredevil to appear. Spider-Man needs a lawyer, and who better to help him than the guy who's already in the neighborhood, already in the MCU, and has the only eyewear as cool as Spider-Man.

All in all, looks like it might be the best 3rd installment Spider-Man has had, though the competition is either incredibly contentious or totally nonexistent. It still looks rad, and we only have to wait a month before it's here.

Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters December 17th. What surprises do you think Spider-Man: No Way Home has left for us and what do you think of the new trailer? Give us your thoughts and theories in the comments!

Tapas Media And CAA Are Partnering To Bring Comics To The Screen

Posted: 16 Nov 2021 03:43 PM PST

Comics of all kinds are getting their moment in the sun. Tapas Media, home of pretty much every web comic that has ever become a meme, is going to be working on producing films and shows based on their intellectual property. Tapas Media has signed with CAA and will be "aggressively" moving forward with their plan to adapt their properties to the screens big and small.

What's Going To Happen With Tapas and CAA Working Together?

A lot of the most popular comics on the internet come out of or end up on Tapas. Sarah's Scribbles, Magical Boy, DPS Only!, and all the Sonic the Hedgehog fanfic you could ever want live on Tapas. There's this wealth of really popular stories on Tapas that would translate so well to tv and movies, and now things are in place for that to happen.

Tapas Media CAA

Image via Sarah Anderson, Tapas

Tapas has a lot of stuff they can adapt, and that's particularly exciting if you've ever found yourself scowling at a reboot for a movie that was rebooted again only a year before. Long-time fans of comics like Brutally Honest have the chance to see the characters and stories they love adapted in a new way. Even if you haven't ever heard of any of the comics on Tapas, there's still something to get excited about. These are stories and creators that have gathered huge followings, which usually means a pretty compelling story or comic throughline, and that means there's potential for these movies and shows to have an actual budget.

Why the Tapas Media and CAA Partnership is Exciting

This is a chance to see more stories featuring and created by LGBTQ+ people, and most of these stories aren't the same kind of pity party nightmare hellscape that we often get out of Hollywood. There's enough gay content on Tapas to merit its own category in the menu, so it would be genuinely weird to not see some of that translated to the screen.

Tapas Media CAA

Image via AMC

Representation has gone a long way in the last few years, but there's a lot of room for growth considering TV and film still loves to bury their gays, even if Disney did do the bare minimum and not cut the gay relationship in Eternals. Because AMC will never let Aaron from The Walking Dead find love that doesn't end in death, and because virtually every piece of kids' media featuring gay characters mysteriously seems to end immediately after, this partnership between Tapas Media and CAA is really good news.

What Tapas comics are you hoping to see adapted to the screen? Tell us about it in the comments!

DC Releases A Space Jam 25th Anniversary Comic Book

Posted: 16 Nov 2021 12:34 PM PST

Where were you when a bunch of cartoon characters from the Great Depression era took over the world? The year was 1996, and the biggest movie in the minds of anyone under 18 was Space Jam. In 1992 and 1993, Bugs Bunny helped superstar Michael Jordan sell Nike shoes. Who knew just a few years later that Mike would be helping Bugs save the planet? Space Jam is silly in its premise and stellar in its execution of a timeless telling of an intergalactic basketball game. Two and a half decades passed since that match took place, and among many 25th anniversary celebrations taking place this week is a free DC comic book featuring the Tune Squad. Whether you’re a 90s kid itching to relive the classic film or someone who just loves weird crossover comics, here’s how to find the Space Jam 25th anniversary comic book!

Where to Download the Free Space Jam 25th Anniversary Comic Book

Debuting on Nov. 15, 1996, Space Jam earned $230 million at the box office. More importantly, it became one of the most impactful cartoons of the entire decade. Merch for the film spread into fast food restaurants, streetwear brands, and even kickstarted a boom in toy merchandising. Call me old, but it doesn’t feel like Space Jam released 25 years ago. In my head, I guess I’m still in elementary school trying to recreate the Jordan shot from the half-court line on a Fisher-Price hoop.

WarnerMedia Global Brands and Experiences announced a collection of 90s inspired merchandise and goodies celebrating the anniversary, which took place Monday. Fun stuff to check out includes an upcoming NFT drop, an all-new digital comic from DC, and more to commemorate the 25th anniversary of "Space Jam" and its lasting impact on pop culture. The comic in particular is pretty cool because it’s free and you can download it right now.

Head over to the anniversary site and click “Comic Book” to obtain the PDF. DC worked with Warner Bros. for this original story. In all honesty, I like it’s premise a hell of a lot more than Space Jam: A New LegacyThe Looney Tunes are in an odd spot right now. The new Looney Tunes Cartoons series on HBO Max is pretty damn good if you ask me. That said, they certainly don’t hold the cultural sway they did in the 20th century. There’s still a place for them in pop culture, but it won’t ever look anything like 1996 again.

Space Jam didn’t just become a pop culture phenomenon. In the early days of the internet, it was also one of the first films to have a dedicated promotional website. While you can still visit that website today, a new site hosts all of the 25th anniversary goodies you can buy via Stellar Souvenirs.

On the new Space Jam anniversary site, you can find easy links to the merch and the free comic book released for the film. Everything from a branded rug to NFTs can be found there. If you pick anything up, then let us know what you bought in the comments!
