The Most Important Food Lesson I'll Ever Teach My Kids Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:12 PM PST I grew up in the middle of the city in Copenhagen, but I found peace in nature. From as early as I can remember, I spent time in the woods and ocean, visiting my grandmother and other relatives on the islands of Fyn, in the Southern part of Denmark. I'd pick herbs from her garden or fish with my uncle and grandfather, the sight and scent and sounds showing me the way. As a kid, I struggled in school; the more traditional side of academia collided with my energetic, restless boyhood. But in the ever-changing forests or the icy waters of Denmark's archipelago, I found another type of education. Less theoretical, more tactile. I swore that when I became a father, I would bring my kids into nature. I wanted to instill in them the same type of curiosity and reverence for the land that I was fortunate enough to experience. |
Our 10 Most Popular New Recipes in November Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:02 PM PST Our editors started talking about Thanksgiving this year as soon as Thanksgiving last year was over. We started publishing holiday recipes long before November kicked off. All of which means—no, there is not a single roast turkey on this list. You're welcome! Instead, we've got a savory pie that just happens to be vegan, a feel-good farro bowl with broccoli and olives, and a few-ingredient apple dessert that couldn't be prettier if it tried. From Our Shop 10. Vegan Mushroom Pie With Melted Leeks & HerbsDon't take my word for it—according to one reviewer, this savory pie is: "Truly one of the best and most beautiful things I've ever made." |
16 Best Wine Subscriptions, Based on 40 Taste Tests Posted: 30 Nov 2021 01:25 PM PST There are thousands of wine subscriptions and clubs all around the United States, all making various promises of having the best wine. But to determine the quality and value of what they're selling takes an understanding of the fine print, years of experience, and lots of taste testing—all of which we did to find the best wine subscriptions. We researched dozens of wine subscriptions, went through various signup processes, waited (im)patiently for well-padded boxes, and ultimately tested almost 40 bottles of red, white, orange, sparkling, and more. (Yes, we drank and wasted an intimidating amount of wine, with regrets). |
Latke Patacones Are as Untraditional—& Outstanding—as They Sound Posted: 30 Nov 2021 01:25 PM PST I was first introduced to my favorite snack in Ciudad Colón, Costa Rica—a small town outside of the capital, San José, where I went to graduate school. After class one day, I joined some friends and a professor for drinks and snacks at Zompopas, a no-frills bar and restaurant where you shuffle around fold-out chairs and slide tables together for larger gatherings. Before long, there was a plate of patacones in front of us to share, with a small bowl of refried black beans in the middle topped with crumbled fresh cheese. It was love at first crunch. |
The 'Sun Omelette' That TikTok Is Obsessing Over Posted: 30 Nov 2021 12:53 PM PST You can't look away from TikTok for even one minute without a new recipe, cleaning hack, or travel tip going absolutely viral. This morning, the new hot thing is this trending sun omelette recipe, which uses sliced tomatoes as a mold for scrambled eggs, cheese, and herbs. The recipe has collectively gained more than 20 million views after being recreated and shared on the app by TikTok users arry3453, cocinandoenparati, and abbily985. From Our Shop How to Make Sun OmeletteWake up on the right side of the bed with this viral trend. Here's how to make TikTok's sun omelettes: thinly slice a tomato into approximately ¼-inch rings. Lay the slices cut side down on a cutting board and press a wine glass into the center of the tomato to remove the flesh and seeds. Separate the tomato "rings" from the pulp. Chop the pulp and seeds and transfer the mixture to a bowl. Add two eggs, chopped chives, salt, pepper, and grated Parmesan cheese and whisk vigorously until combined. |
42 Versatile Recipes to Celebrate Chickpeas Every Which Way Posted: 30 Nov 2021 12:30 PM PST If you're anything like me (read: a vegetarian; a lover of good food; a sorta impatient person), chickpeas are in heavy rotation in your cooking—especially now. As of this writing, a pound of the dried stuff and seven cans of cooked chickpeas are hanging out in my pantry, just waiting to be used. (The dried ones are calling for a long Sunday simmer as I putter around the house.) You need no telling how flexible, satiating, and flat-out delicious chickpeas can be, so I won't tell you. I'll just show off 42 ways these little legumes strut their stuff, in crunchy-roasted snacks, slurpable stews, and sweets (yes!) alike. |
16 Ideas for Leftover Prime Rib (Other Than, You Know, Just Eating It) Posted: 30 Nov 2021 11:30 AM PST So you did the thing. To the delight of your family and friends, you herb-rubbed, temped, roasted, temped again, carved, and served up a prime rib during the holiday season. But now, you've found yourself with a bit of a (tasty) problem: What to do with all of the leftover prime rib roast? Sure it's easy enough to make a leftover prime rib sandwich topped with caramelized onions, a dollop of sour cream, and au jus for dipping, but that's not exactly reinventing the wheel (though it does sound damn tasty). We've got you covered. From tacos to pho, here are 16 ways to keep the good prime rib times going. |
30 White Elephant Gifts Under $25 You’ll Want To Keep Yourself Posted: 30 Nov 2021 09:00 AM PST The holidays usually offer (most of) us some reprieve from the chaos of everyday life, but the pandemic has added another layer of confusion and stress. Life right now is anything but perfect, and for some of us, giving a bunch of perfectly-wrapped presents may not be the vibe, or may not be feasible. Thankfully, a white elephant party lets you revel in this imperfect mess with gifts that are so irrelevant you can't imagine how they were made, or so genius that you can't imagine how you don't already own five of them. They take the pressure out of finding the perfect present and instead make gift giving about spending time with people you love. I still remember my first one even a decade later. It wasn't the preppy headband set I left with that made its mark on me, but the pure, unadulterated joy of watching friends and family try to steal each other's gifts and the belly laughs that came with it. |
