New speedrun technique brings the Skyrim glitchless world record under 73 minutes

New speedrun technique brings the Skyrim glitchless world record under 73 minutes

Skyrim is a big game, but speedrunners have been making it look small for years, and it seems there's still more to discover. Skyrim speedrunners have figured out a new technique that's managed to shave a full minute off of the glitchless main story quest run, and it's bringing new life to a category whose previous world records had stood for the better part of a year.

The Skyrim glitchless main quest world record is down to 1:12:15 thanks to runner nucular (as spotted by TheGamer). Until just recently, nucular held that world record at 1:14:07, but there's new tech in the air, as demonstrated by fellow runner TODDs_Telemedien, which has broken new possibilities for the category.

Basically, it hinges on the quest A Cornered Rat, where you go into the Riften sewers to meet with Esbern. With some skilled manoeuvring and a bit of luck, you can get an angered guard to follow you toward that meeting so that when you finish with it, he'll take you straight to jail. That effectively serves as a teleport out of the sewers, saving you from having to go to the trouble of leaving the area, and cutting over a minute off the run.

RGB LED light strip deals – Philips Hue, Govee, Nanoleaf, and Yeelight on sale

Nowadays, it's not just your gaming PC that benefits from a splash of RGB lighting, but your entire room. The only problem is that it often costs a fortune to decorate your setup like your favourite streamer's, with light strips, panels, and bulbs coming with a premium price tag. Fortunately, you're browsing Cyber Monday deals, and there are plenty of discounts across the biggest brands, provided you're quick.

That's right, Philips Hue, Govee, Yeelight, and Nanoleaf kicked off Cyber Monday by cutting the cost of their brightly lit decor, so you can plaster your walls, furniture, and lamps with a personal flare for up to 30% off.

After all, RGB doesn't necessarily mean rainbow colours, but the freedom to pick and choose your room's theme on a whim. You can tie everything together so it matches your keyboard and mouse, surround your monitor with warm lights so your face better shows on webcam, and kick back with lights that react to your movies or music.

Another Company of Heroes 3 alpha brings seven days of access to the RTS game

Company of Heroes 3 isn't due to launch until 2022, but the developers at Relic seem keen to provide plenty of opportunities for players to check it out early. Another multiplayer pre-alpha is getting underway this week, and will provide seven days' worth of action against both online players and AI opponents.

The multiplayer pre-alpha starts on Tuesday, November 30 at 9am PST / 12pm EST / 5pm GMT, and lasts until Monday, December 6 at 8pm PST / 11pm EST, or December 7 at 4am GMT. Pre-loads are already available, so you can be ready to play as soon as the playtest goes live.

If you didn't sign up for the previous pre-alpha, you'll need to register over on the official site. Then you can link your Steam account, and redeem a key for pre-alpha access via the Relic page. Once you've done so, the playtest will appear in your Steam library, and you'll be able to download it ahead of launch.

Get up to 63% off when you buy an Amazon Echo this Cyber Monday

Get up to 63% off when you buy an Amazon Echo this Cyber Monday

Connecting your devices can do a lot to enhance your gaming experience. Something like the Amazon Echo has quite a lot to offer PC gamers, whether it's by vocally controlling the RGB lights you're using in your setup, choosing the right background music to play during a long gaming session, or even by setting up notifications so that you know when your favourite games are on offer. If you want to make an investment into one of these delightful pieces of technology, the good news is that they are up to 63% off this Cyber Monday.

The Echo Show 8, released earlier this year, is reduced by a huge 31%, bringing the price down to $89.99. Unlike the Echo Dot models, the Echo Show comes with a small 8 inch HD touch screen which you can use for social and entertainment purposes, as well as being able to give it voice commands, like setting up reminders for time-sensitive in-game events, or reminding you when the Steam seasonal sale launches. You can even set it to curate your news so that you never miss any updates about your favourite games.

Of course, not everybody needs a HD screen with their Amazon Echo. If you just want it for the integrated smart features (like controlling RGB lights or sound systems) then the Echo Dot 3rd generation would be worth a look. This one one has been reduced by a whopping 63%, meaning that you can grab one for a mere $19.99 if you buy it before the Cyber Monday sales pass.

This Civil War game was inspired by Mount & Blade, and it’s taken 10 years to make

The developers behind the popular Napoleonic Wars expansion for Mount & Blade: Warband are in the final phases of development on Battle Cry of Freedom, an American Civil War game heading to Steam in 2022. It's taken them 10 years, and the result is a multiplayer game that allows up to 300 players to duke it out on some of the Civil War's most storied battlefields.

Battle Cry of Freedom is in development by Flying Squirrel Entertainment, the Netherlands-based studio that created the Mount & Blade: Warband - Napoleonic Wars DLC for TaleWorlds. That expansion was published in 2012, and since then, Flying Squirrel has been developing Battle Cry of Freedom, a passion project borne out of the developers' own love of CIvil War reenactment.

Looking over the features list, it becomes clearer why development has taken so long. Battle Cry of Freedom not only lets you fight it out as either a Union or Confederate infantry soldier, you'll also have access to "a wide range of artillery pieces" that each have a selection of munitions, there are barricades and trenches to build, destructible environments, and "dozens of classes to choose from".

Sapphire is allegedly selling custom crypto mining AMD GPUs directly to miners

It's well understood by now that the best graphics cards are hard to come by due to the ongoing chip shortage and unprecedented demand from both gamers and crypto miners. However, a recent report by El Chapuzas Informatico (via Videocardz) claims that GPU manufacturer Sapphire is making and selling crypto mining cards.

The report contains images and specifications of two graphics cards, namely the Sapphire GPRO X080 and GPRO X060. The company's GPRO series of GPUs are billed as products for the commercial market, similar to Nvidia's RTX A2000 and AMD's Radeon's Pro cards. However, the specifications shared by El Chapuzas Informatico specifically highlight the 'reference Ethash Performance', which is used to describe a graphics card's performance when mining the Ethereum crypto currency.

Both cards supposedly use variants of AMD's RDNA 2 microarchitecture, with the GPRO X080 using the Navi 22 GPU found in the RX 6700 and RX 6700 XT, with an MSRP of €750. Meanwhile, the GPRO X060 uses the Navi 23 XL GPU found in the RX 6600, and costs €550.

Cyberpunk 2077 gets a “major update for all platforms” early next year

Cyberpunk 2077 gets a

A major update for Cyberpunk 2077 will launch alongside its next-gen console version, which is expected to launch early next year. Developer CD Projekt Red says the studio is engaged in "ongoing work" on the Cyberpunk 2077 expansions, as well as on the next-gen version of fantasy RPG game The Witcher 3.

"We are hard at work on the next-gen version of Cyberpunk [2077], scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2022, alongside another major update for all platforms," CEO Adam KiciƄski says in a summary report on the publisher's third fiscal quarter. "There is also ongoing work on the next-gen version of the Witcher 3 and the Cyberpunk expansion."

Vice president and chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz notes that the CD Projekt has seen a reduction in net profits this year, which he says is "mainly due to expenses related to updating Cyberpunk and exploratory work on new projects which are at an early stage of development". Despite the reduced net profits, Nielubowicz says the company's financial reserves have grown over the past quarter.

Sea of Thieves Season Five adds buryable treasure and D&D dice

Sea of Thieves Season Five adds buryable treasure and D&D dice

A new season for Sea of Thieves gets underway in December, and while it won't have the big new content drops that we saw in Seasons Three and Four, Season Five is bringing us a host of quality-of-life features that might be even more significant. The update will bring everything from buryable treasure to polyhedral dice, so here's a broad rundown of what to expect.

You will now be able to bury your own treasure. Doing so will create a custom treasure map detailing the location of your booty - you can post that to a quest board at sea posts and outposts, and other players will be able to pick up that map and go seek out the treasure for themselves. If another crew succeeds at that treasure hunt, you'll also get the reputation reward for the loot, as well as a renown bonus.

Perhaps the biggest of the myriad quality of life tweaks is the update to storage crates. While holding a crate, you can now look at a barrel or other container and simply 'take all'. This should make stocking up your ship at the start of a session far less of a time sink.

Minecraft Warden – everything we know

Minecraft Warden – everything we know

Want to know a little more about the new Minecraft Warden mob? This terrifying monster can be found lurking deep within Minecraft's caves, now coming as part of the Minecraft 1.19 update next year.

The Warden patrols the deepest areas of caverns and is the only blind mob in the game. So, what makes the Warden so frightening? Well, lack of sight doesn't mean the Warden can't track you down. Instead, the Warden uses sound to locate the player, which means you have to be very sneaky to avoid a confrontation with this new mob - if you're smart you can throw items like snowballs to get the Warden to head in another direction. However, if you find yourself exposed and with nowhere to go, you will have to take on this powerful beast.

Join us as we go through everything Mojang has shared on one of the spookiest Minecraft mobs in the game, from its damage output and health pool, to its movement characteristics and its spawn location.

The most complex WW2 strategy game is coming to Steam

The most complex WW2 strategy game is coming to Steam

Folks have been playing WW2 games since long before Call of Duty appeared on the scene. Traditional wargames have handled bits and pieces of the war for generations now, and PC wargaming represents what you might think of as a separate evolutionary branch of increasing complexity over time, and in that light, Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2 sits at the top of the food chain. After launching on the Slitherine online store in March, it's coming to Steam December 9.

As you can probably tell from the screenshots, War in the East 2 isn't for the faint of heart. It's an obsessively detailed simulation of the entire 3,000-mile Eastern Front in World War II. Beginning in 1941, it runs through four years of conflict at a rate of one week per turn. You've got to manage your forces on the front lines, of course, but War in the East 2 also involves a massive logistics simulation, as well as both sides' air forces.

There's a lot to do, and it can be daunting to start out with. Fortunately, publisher Slitherine has also created a full-colour manual that explains each component of the game, detailing the phases of each turn and how to navigate its many, many menus.

How to light a candle in Minecraft

How to light a candle in Minecraft

Want to know how to light candles in Minecraft? Candles were added to the sandbox game back in the Minecraft 1.17 update which was released in June. The Bedrock Edition also received the 1.17 update, but some items like candles and potted azaleas were delayed until 1.17.10. Now that candles are finally available for everyone, it's time to learn what you can do with them.

The first part of the caves and cliffs update introduces candles as a way to brighten any dark environment. Sure, you could rely entirely on torches to light up caves, but candles bring a certain kind of flair that you can't put a price on. In our opinion, candles are inherently superior to torches as they have multiple uses - they can be used on a birthday cake to create a heartwarming memory for everyone involved.

Sticking a big flaming stick into a cake doesn't work at all, in case you were wondering. Whether you're looking to light up a birthday cake, or create a wonderful ambience in a nearby cave, these Minecraft candles are sure to light up your world - here's how to use them.

New Halo Infinite event armour surfaces in datamine

It looks like the rewards from Halo Infinite's upcoming Tactical Ops event have found their way online. Prolific Fortnite dataminer FireMonkey has taken to Twitter to share armour, coating, and more from the upcoming occasion (thanks, GamesRadar), though the special playlist isn't currently known.

Alongside the Mark V Zeta helmet and Mauros attachment, you might be getting steel and orange armour coating, a Spartan pose, and various experience boosts. The dataminer also shares that the event will run from February 8 to 21, 2022, so you may have a wait on your hands. While FireMonkey doesn't know what the special playlist will be, they did come across a few things called Tactical: Slayer Stalkers, Commandos, Sidekicks, and Manglers. Due to the usage of 'Tactical', they guess it could be related to the upcoming playlist. As ever with datamines, keep in mind that the loot hasn't been confirmed by 343 Industries and could be subject to change.

Recently, the developer confirmed that Halo Infinite is getting more free content-focused events alongside Fracture: Tenrai called Winter Contingency, Cyber Showdown, and Tactical Ops.

Minecraft allay mob – everything we know

We've said farewell to Minecraft Live 2021, and the devs at Mojang once again provided us with a selection of new mobs to choose between for inclusion in the game. The ultimate winner was the item-collecting allay.

The allay looks like a little blue fairy with bat wings. If you give it an item, it will find nearby dropped items of the same type. But, as the devs note on Twitter, it won't duplicate that item or rifle through chests for it - it's purely about picking up that item when it's dropped on the overworld. The allay will then drop the collected items near a note block, apparently because it loves to dance.

The allay mob is one of several new mobs and features coming to The Wild update, it joins Minecraft frogs, a new mangrove tree and swamp biome, and mud blocks. Although this isn't the next scheduled update to Minecraft, with the Caves and Cliffs part two, otherwise known as the Minecraft 1.18 update.

Myth of Empires is a stunning multiplayer sandbox game that’s hit Steam’s bestsellers

Myth of Empires is a stunning multiplayer sandbox game that’s hit Steam’s bestsellers

Myth of Empires is a historical multiplayer sandbox game that's just come to Steam in Early Access - and it's already proved a bit of a hit on Valve's platform. A couple of weeks on from its debut on November 18, it's snagged a place in the top ten best-selling games on Steam for the week ending November 28.

That's according to Steam stats site SteamDB, which rounds up the platform's best-selling games of each week every Sunday. This week's results have already proved a bit of a surprise, with Farming Simulator 22 impressively taking the top spot, above massive new releases such as Battlefield 2042 - a feat mirrored in the two games' respective concurrent player counts this past weekend. Myth of Empires, however, has nabbed the number ten spot, which puts it just behind FIFA 22.

Developed by China-based studio Angela Game, which was also behind January's free-to-play RTS game Iron Conflict, Myth of Empires is set in a historical and pretty vast game world you'll have to survive to "rise from zero to hero". You'll need to "survive the harsh environment, build your homeland, raise your army, and vanquish your foes on the battlefield," as its devs explain.

The Network N inclusion fund

The Network N inclusion fund

In June last year, in the wake of George Floyd's murder and the civil unrest it catalysed, our parent company committed to increase the visibility of BIPOC and other underrepresented voices across its portfolio. Network N's owned-and-operated sites, including PCGamesN, had their freelance budgets raised by 25%, with the raise allocated specifically to commissioning those voices.

From November 2021, that investment has been raised further, to a total of £5,000 (~$6,500) a month, or £60,000 (~$79,000) per year. This money will be used solely to commission work by writers from BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and other diverse backgrounds across PCGamesN and all its sister sites.

We want to continue to ensure that all such writers are getting the same opportunities as any others, so please pitch us your ideas across the gamut of games writing: opinion, features, guides, reviews; all of it. In addition, we also want to highlight the personal experiences of gamers from these less-represented groups; not only do we want to have more diverse voices covering our usual beats, but more diverse coverage, too.

Halo Infinite devs are taking another look at battle pass progression

Halo Infinite devs are taking another look at battle pass progression

Following plenty of feedback from fans, 343 Industries is taking another look at Halo Infinite's progression systems in multiplayer. Over the past week, several senior staffers have taken to Twitter to assure fans that "constructive feedback is being heard loud and clear", and that progression is top of the team's priority list.

343 Industries head of design Jerry Hook admits that he's "feeling everyone's pain on progression", further assuring players that the issue is "top" of his list with the team this week. Hook's tweet follows comments made by community director Brian Jarrard last week, who also took time out to let people know that the team is aware of complaints over time investment and rewards. "Been travelling so slow to respond - but please know the constructive feedback is being heard loud and clear," he said at the time. Jarrard also explained that "changes will take time" as the priority last week was giving the team a "much-deserved break" for the Thanksgiving holiday.

While the new PC game's multiplayer has been praised for its combat, criticism of Halo Infinite's battle pass is seldom too far away. The developers were swift to introduce a bevy of tweaks, though the conversation picked up once again when the Fracture: Tenrai event went live last week.

Minecraft copper – how to make a lightning rod

What is copper in Minecraft? Yes, we have a brand new resource to play with, which you can smelt, wield, and craft until your heart desires. The new material arrives in the upcoming Minecraft 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update and as part of Mojang's promise to the community to spruce up the cave and mountain system.

As well as copper, the upcoming update will also add new Minecraft mobs such as adorable mountain goats, sweet little axolotls, and the warden - a blind monster mob found lurking in your newly excavated caves. For everything we know about these updates, check out our guides on the Minecraft 1.17 update and Minecraft 1.18 update to get the full Caves and Cliffs release dates, how the new cave system works, and of course the biomes themselves.

It also has a fun quirk that veteran players will adore, in that copper turns green over time as it's naturally exposed to the elements, so long term players can celebrate their turquoise trophies. Or passing players can marvel at your greening Minecraft house - or whatever you decide to build with copper in Minecraft.

AMD Ryzen CPUs with 3D V-Cache could power up gaming PCs by early 2022

AMD Ryzen CPUs with 3D V-Cache could power up gaming PCs by early 2022

Intel has finally made the processor market competitive again with its Alder Lake CPUs, but it appears AMD has a trick up its sleeve that could help the company maintain the lead that it's built up over the past several years. According to reliable hardware leaker Greymon55, we could see Ryzen CPUs equipped with team red's new '3D V-Cache' technology on store shelves by February 2022.

AMD announced that it would begin production of its "highest-end products with 3D chiplets by the end of this year", during its Computex keynote in June, but the company is yet to announce an official release date. Greymon55 claims that team red is already in the midst of mass producing chips and that it "usually takes at least 3 months to get to market, so I'm leaning toward it being announced in January and available in February."

This technology will prove useful in improving performance across a variety of applications, including gaming. AMD says a prototype Ryzen 9 5900X using 3D V-Cache technology can boost fps by 15% on average, versus the company's current best gaming CPU, thanks to triple the amount of L3 cache.

How Arcane gets videogame adaptation right

How Arcane gets videogame adaptation right

Expectations were high for Riot's first animated series after its trailer premiered over two years ago, but not even the most diehard League of Legends fans could have predicted its meteoric success. Arcane currently boasts a 100% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 98% viewer score, and it's among the most-watched shows on Netflix, even dethroning Squid Game in China.

It's a hit with universal appeal that has received plaudits from critics and audiences alike, and most importantly, from people who don't play League of Legends. For any videogame franchise, this is the Holy Grail of expanded universe content - it's peerless.

The question is, what does Arcane have that other videogame adaptations lack? Obviously, obviously, Arcane is jaw-droppingly pretty. Studio Fortiche, the animation team behind Arcane, has blended a heady mix of expressive and fluid 3D animation with painterly textures, hand-drawn 2D effects, and head-spinning attention to detail. Nothing else out there, save for Fortiche's previous work, looks like Arcane. It's a complete paradigm shift for 3D animation in television.

Minecraft Lush Caves – everything we know

Digging underground in Minecraft can be a terrifying proposition for newer players. After all, there are all sorts of scary things that can appear within the dark depths. We're pretty sure you never forgot the first time an Enderman ambushed you as you were mining for precious diamonds.

Eventually, these caves and the underground areas just became samey. There's only so much time you can spend mining for gemstones before the call of the diverse surface biomes tempts you away from the resources below.

In the Minecraft 1.18 update, which is part two of the full Caves & Cliffs update, several new biomes will be introduced to the underground areas and perhaps the most intriguing one revealed so far has been the Lush Caves. Some of the blocks and mobs are already available as of the Minecraft 1.17 update. This rather bright biome is a welcome respite from the relentless monsters and vicious spiders that infest the rest of the underground areas. In addition to being a place to relax, it's also home to perhaps the cutest mob introduced to Minecraft in quite some time.

This CS:GO fan map changes Dust II from desert into an abandoned “green oasis”

This CS:GO fan map changes Dust II from desert into an abandoned “green oasis”

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive fans know Dust II well. Succeeding the original Dust map, it's one of the FPS game's most popular battlegrounds - and it's an iconic one, too, with its distinctive Middle Eastern town-style streets and aesthetic. Now, though, you can play the same map with a whole other vibe, as a modder's transformed its desert setting into a "green oasis".

CS:GO modder BARS's new 'Dust II 2055' overhaul mod is the latest in their '2055' series, which gives existing maps an "abandoned style" by imagining a future state in which weather events have changed, people have left the sites behind, and nature has started reclaiming the buildings and streets. "Dust 2 has turned from a desert into a green oasis," the modder says in the reimagined Dust II 2055's description. "Acid rain and changing weather conditions have completely changed the map" - and it has indeed been totally transformed.

Dust II's previously sun-baked streets have become overrun with moss and grass, there are trees with trails of vines hanging from their branches scattered about, and the whole ecosystem's far from sunny. Even the underground and covered areas have fallen to nature, with huge tree roots breaking through the walls and gates.
