Roguelike Metroidvania Dead Cells is getting “at least another year” of free updates

Roguelike Metroidvania Dead Cells is getting “at least another year” of free updates

Dead Cells has been among the best efforts to combine the exploration of Metroidvanias with the replayability of roguelike games, and the developers have continued supporting it with a combination of free updates and paid DLC for years since its exit from Early Access. The devs aren't finished, either, as they've just detailed a new DLC pack and confirmed that another year of updates is coming.

The Queen and the Sea is the next DLC pack for Dead Cells, and is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2022 at the usual price of $4.99 / £4.49 / €4.99. It'll bring a new ending to the game, concluding "the path started with The Bad Seed and Fatal Falls", and it'll feature two new biomes with the Infested Shipwreck and the Lighthouse, which will be in parallel to High Peak Castle and the Throne Room.

The devs at Motion Twin say that the DLC will help fund their next project and continued Dead Cells updates. After the DLC launches, they'll be "releasing more free stuff! And we'll continue to do that for at least another year. There's already a good chunk of content planned and being worked on right now with some fresh ideas in play, so you shouldn't be getting bored with us anytime soon."

Minecraft devs confirm the new 1.18 ore distribution

Minecraft devs confirm the new 1.18 ore distribution

Minecraft 1.18 is finally here, and that means it's time to start exploring some deep caves and figuring out where the diamonds are with the new ore distribution. Luckily, the devs have provided some helpful charts and videos to get you pointed in the right direction.

Previously, most types of Minecraft ore would generate evenly regardless of the y coordinate, so if you were mining within a given ore's height range, you had an equal chance of finding it. Now most ore has a sort of 'triangular' distribution pattern, meaning that you're most likely to mine successfully toward the center of the height range.

As an example, diamonds generate in that triangular pattern between y-144 and y16. Since the Minecraft world ends at y-64, you won't be able to reach those juicy diamonds spawning below the bedrock. That means, simply, that you'll find more diamonds the deeper you go, as the lowest levels get you closest to the centre of the distribution pattern.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite Season 2 begins in two weeks

Aliens: Fireteam Elite Season 2 begins in two weeks

It's time for another bug hunt: season two of Aliens: Fireteam Elite will begin in December, and the update will include a raft of free content for the sci-fi co-op game. All colonial marines will see free content in the form of a new game mode, new weapons, new challenge cards, and plenty more when the season kicks off December 14.

Season two in Fireteam Elite is called Point Defence, which coincidentally is the name of the new game mode arriving with the update. Point defence is a variation on horde mode, where you and your team will have to defend three key locations during several waves of enemy attack. As these points take damage, you'll need to repair them as well, which means someone may have to be fixing things instead of shooting at any given moment as hissing hordes of xenomorphs descend on the area.

As you play Point Defense, you'll earn fabrication points that can be used to buy consumables that temporarily buff you and your team. The mode also offers 20 rewards to unlock through playing it at different difficulty levels.

Capcom’s arcade emulation collection is the eighth-biggest Steam game of all time

Capcom’s arcade emulation collection is the eighth-biggest Steam game of all time

Capcom Arcade Stadium reached nearly a half-million concurrent players on Steam earlier today, making it the eighth-biggest game in the platform's history. There's a free download with access to classic shmup 1943 but, uh… well, this isn't exactly the only way to play arcade games for free on PC. You can thank bots and Valve's trading card system for that.

If you keep a close eye on SteamDB's list of the most-played Steam games of all-time, you'll find some weird names in the top 25, like Life is Strange 2, Postal, World of Warships, and Kathy Rain. Some of those games are quite popular, but not normally at the level of the platform's biggest games. What they all have in common is that they briefly went free without disabling access to Steam trading cards, drawing bots to idle in those games so they could resell the cards on the Steam marketplace.

At a peak of 488,791 players, though, Capcom Arcade Stadium is the biggest bot draw ever. (The game didn't even clear 1,000 concurrents at launch.) As SteamDB developer Pavel Djundik tells PC Gamer, cards just became available for the collection, drawing in bots by the hundreds of thousands.

Humankind’s Dia de los Muertos event extended after players report lost progress

Humankind’s Dia de los Muertos event extended after players report lost progress

Historical 4X game Humankind has been running a seasonal event this month, but it's run into a few snags. Players have reported losing progress on various challenges in Humankind's Dia de los Muertos limited time event, which has led to frustration as it draws to its scheduled conclusion. Amplitude has announced that it's got a fix on the way, and that it's extending the event into December to give players more time to finish.

Dia de los Muertos will now run until December 21, rather than wrapping up today, November 30. Amplitude says it's worked out what the problem was that was causing lost progress on the event challenges, but that it won't be ready to deploy a fix until mid-December.

Many players reported losing their progress on the Civil Evolution and Necropolis challenges, while others said they'd been able to complete all the challenges and unlock the new avatar preset, Catrina, but were not able to use it. Fortunately, Amplitude says it will be granting the event rewards to anyone who has made progress on any of the challenges prior to the forthcoming patch.

Genshin Impact 2.4 release date – Lantern Rite and Enkanomiya details

The Genshin Impact 2.4 update is due to arrive in early 2022 and will coincide with the anniversary of last February's Lantern Rite festival, an extensive celebration with plenty of activities and rewards. Genshin Impact fans have uncovered information indicating that the Lantern Rite festival will return during 2.4, and may include a rerun of the immensely popular Windtrace event.

In addition to Lantern Rite, 2.4 may also introduce a new area called Enkanomiya. According to information from the 2.4 beta, this mysterious region is accessed from Inazuma, although it has its own separate map. Reportedly, Enkanomiya operates on a unique day/night cycle, and players can manually switch between Evernight and Whitenight in order to solve puzzles and modify the environment.

Genshin Impact 2.4 could also include two new characters - Yun Jin and Shenhe - and dataminers have uncovered new skins for Keqing and Ningguang, in addition to hangout events and new weapons, and new furnishings for the Genshin Impact Serenitea Pot. This information is based on beta gameplay and has not been officially confirmed by Mihoyo. With that in mind, here's everything we know about the next Genshin Impact update ahead of the Genshin Impact 2.4 release date.

The best grand strategy games on PC

The best grand strategy games on PC

Grand strategy games are an emerging sub-genre of strategy games that typically encompass long periods of history (or, if sci-fi, time), and involve many intricate layers that players need to contend with. It's not just about winning that war or setting up this mine; you've got to develop infrastructure, set policy, and manage internal dynamics over the long term.

This genre often involves the exploration of the map in order to better understand the resources at your command and the position of your enemies – and your friends. Lines blur when picking apart the edge cases, but by and large count on grand strategy games to make the management of your faction the primary part of the experience. They often over-lap with other genres within strategy gaming, especially 4X games, but a key difference can be in framing. Games like Civilization, for example, typically put the emphasis on managing military resources in particular, with other mechanics in a supporting role.

It can also be just as much a case as to what the accepted definitions are and how a game is marketed. In any case, this is definitely a genre worth exploring in more detail.

Destiny 2: what is the Nightfall weapon this week?

Destiny 2: what is the Nightfall weapon this week?

Want to know what this week's Destiny 2 Nightfall weapon is? Each week you've got a chance at a different weapon for completing Nightfall Strikes, and as of Season of the Lost, you can now get fan-favourite legacy weapons from the original Destiny. Two more of these weapons arrived in Season of the Lost, so it's more important than ever to know in advance the Nightfall weapon schedule.

In case all these words are new to you, Nightfall: The Ordeal is a playlist available in the Vanguard menu, alongside the basic Strike playlist. Each week, a different Strike is chosen as the Nightfall, and offered in five escalating difficulties, with harder enemies, challenging modifiers, and enemy power levels cranking up.

The coveted Nightfall weapons have a chance to drop from any Nightfall Strike difficulty, but it's far more likely at higher levels. Your best bet for farming each week's Nightfall weapon is to set the Strike to Master difficulty, according to YouTuber Aztecross. You should also note that there's no automatic matchmaking above Hero difficulty, however, so you'll need to get a squad together.

When does the new Warzone map come out?

When does the new Warzone map come out?

Want to know more about the new Warzone map? Sledgehammer Games' WWII themed release will integrate with Warzone in December 2021, introducing new weapons, vehicles, and a brand new WWII map set to replace '80s Verdansk. The new map is called Caldera, and it's going to launch with Vanguard and Warzone Season 1.

Black Ops Cold War fully integrated with the battle royale game at the beginning of Season 3 with the release of '80s Verdansk, five months after its November launch. There were a number of issues with the Cold War integration that took a while to fix: popular weapons were completely unbalanced for months, attachments didn't function like they were supposed to, and weapon balancing on Modern Warfare weapons completely stopped.

A recent Call of Duty blog post broke down everything coming to Warzone less than a month after Vanguard launches. There are plenty of in-game events on the run up to Warzone Pacific, so stay tuned for more information. Here's everything we know about the new Warzone map so far.

Genshin Impact Yun Jin release date and abilities

Although update 2.3 in Genshin Impact is out this week, attention is starting to drift further afield as a long-rumoured character is reportedly coming to the anime game in the not-too-distant future.

Yun Jin's name has popped up several times already in Genshin Impact. Back in January 2021, dataminer Lumie shared a render of the character on Twitter.  She has also appeared in the game, albeit scarcely. We caught a glimpse of her during a recent cutscene for the Moonchase Festival, and several existing characters mention her by name in their voice lines. Here's everything we know about Yun Jin in Genshin Impact so far.

Mihoyo has revealed Yun Jin in a recent tweet, although we don't know her abilities just yet, it is confirmed she's a Geo polearm and is the director of the Yun-Han Opera Troupe and is famous figure in Liyue Harbor's opera scene. She was unveiled alongside Shenhe, another polearm user with Geo abilities.

New Hearts of Iron 4 hotfix drops today, and a bigger patch is due next week

New Hearts of Iron 4 hotfix drops today, and a bigger patch is due next week

Hearts of Iron IV received a new hotfix today, its third in the week since expansion No Step Back's launch its third since the release of the No Step Back expansion, and a bigger update is on the cards for next week. The 1.11.3 micro-patch doesn't do much other than fix some AI issues and some bugs, but it builds on other fixes introduced at the end of last week. These dealt with issues around other expansion content and anti-virus software preventing the game from launching.

Now that these early teething issues are out of the way, we expect the next few patches to deal with other critical bits of feedback that have come from the formidable Hearts of Iron IV playerbase getting its hands on the game.

The Hearts of Iron IV development team is running a small beta test for the new patch, and you can see the current list of proposed changes on the official forums. There are a lot more fixes coming down the pipe, although it remains to be seen which changes will actually make the final release. We imagine all of the bug fixes will, but there are balance changes as well which will need fine-tuning.

Terraria devs are using Steam Deck delays to make the port even better

Terraria devs are using Steam Deck delays to make the port even better

While Valve has been forced to delay the Steam Deck by two months due to global supply chain issues, many developers are reaping the benefits. One such team is Re-Logic, with the Terraria developer explaining on a Steam blog that the extra time has allowed the team to push its ambitions for the Steam Deck port event further.

"We are going to gratefully take the extra time allowed by the recent Steam Deck launch delays to take our deck optimisations a bit further," Re-Logic explains. "More on that later, once we get a bit further clear from the 1.4.3 launch/fixes!"

If you're not keen to wait, though, the good news is that the Terraria Switch release date has been pencilled in for January 4, 2022. It's not quite the Steam Deck, but it's portable enough, we're sure. You've also got plenty to keep you going in the meantime, too, as Terraria has just got its second major crossover update - this time with indie survival game Don't Starve. The collaboration features new content, such as the Deer Clops boss, new items, and a new world seed that introduces Don't Starve Together gameplay elements into the world of Terraria.

Razer and Qualcomm's handheld looks like a Wii U and Gizmondo hybrid

Cloud gaming is all the rage these days, with the likes of Xbox Cloud Gaming (formerly project xCloud) facilitating bringing sharp and responsive gaming experiences on Microsoft Edge compatible devices. There's no doubt that some gamers will use the upcoming Steam Deck for streaming too, but a new dev kit leak suggests Razer could be conjuring up a new Snapdragon-powered stream machine in collaboration with Qualcomm.

According to leaked slides obtained by Videocardz, the collaborate Razer handheld features Qualcomm's Snapdragon G3x, a chip that's 20% faster than the company's current-gen SoC, and a 4th Gen Adreno GPU. Documentation for the device also suggests that it'll be marketed as a cloud gaming machine, meaning it could support services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now.

CPU and GPU specs aside, the unannounced Razer device boasts a 120Hz HDR OLED display and a hefty 6,000mAh battery, both of which could put devices like the upcoming Steam Deck to shame. That said, while the dev kit's design likely isn't final, it does look more like a cross between a Wii U gamepad and a Gizmondo than a handheld from this decade.

Starfield is “more grounded” than Skyrim, but still has that magic “step out” moment

Starfield is “more grounded” than Skyrim, but still has that magic “step out” moment

Starfield, the upcoming space game from Bethesda Game Studios, is a "more grounded" experience than Skyrim, but game director Todd Howard says you'll still have that signature experience of stepping out into a marvellous new world - in fact, Howard hints, there are two such moments in Starfield.

In the first of a new series of videos called Into the Starfield, the RPG's lead developers chat about its lineage and the experience they've brought to bear working on it. It features a few new glimpses of Starfield, both in-game footage and concept art. The developers discuss some of the goals the studio has for Starfield, as well as how its new setting provides opportunities for the team to use their varied talents and interests in fields like robotics and engineering.

"It's got a more realistic, science-based backing to it," art director Matt Carofano says. "Whereas Skyrim is sort of an epic fantasy, this is a more grounded game, and a grounded setting about exploration. I think that gives us a different take on how we make everything."

Warframe’s The New War expansion is out in two weeks

Digital Extremes has revealed that Warframe's The New War expansion will release on December 15, 2021. The release date was announced during Warframe's final devstream of the year, which also featured a CG story trailer and details on hosted giveaways and Twitch drops.

If you've been out of the loop, The New War is Warframe's next free cinematic questline. You take control of a new playable character, which is a first for the sci-fi game. The story unfolds across three acts and features various missions set in new environments, including open worlds besieged by Sentients. There's plenty that you'll find familiar, too. Digital Extremes explains in a press release that you'll "take control" of enemies like Kahl-175 the Grineer, Veso the Corpus Tech, and the Dax: Teshin as they fight to push back the invading Sentient force. Story details are light right now for spoiler reasons, but the developer teases that "while the war rages on, so will the fight for the truth behind the conflict - understanding the Lotus' past to unlock a new future".

Alongside a new story to progress through, you're also getting more customisations, weapons, and accessories. There's also the Caliban, which is Warframe's 48th unique, uh, Warframe. Think of it as a Sentient-Warframe hybrid, which makes it fit neatly into the expansion theme.

Genshin Impact Shenhe release date and abilities

Genshin Impact is getting two new characters called Yun Jin and Shenhe. The pair have sporadically popped up in datamines over the past year, but Mihoyo has now confirmed on Twitter that they are real, continuing a trend of introducing characters before they're due to get a banner.

Shenhe is a Cryo user who wields a polearm in battle. She hails from a clan of exorcists and is a disciple of an adeptus called Cloud Retainer, who chooses to take the form of a white crane for what it's worth. Mihoyo further fleshes out her background by sharing that, of all the pupils Cloud Retainer has taken on, Shenhe bears the closest resemblance to her. Shenhe thinks she's neat, too - believing her to be a "knowledgeable and chatty" master.

Here's everything we know about Shenhe's banner in Genshin Impact and when we can expect to see her in upcoming updates.

The best Battlefield 2042 weapons

Want to know about every gun in Battlefield 2042? Unlike other games in the series, Battlefield 2042 scraps the traditional class system which ties weapons to specific classes - If you wanted to use an SMG in Battlefield 5, you were forced to pick the Medic class even if you had no intention of healing or reviving dead teammates.

The new Battlefield 2042 Specialist system allows players to pick the weapons they want, alongside the gadget and trait that suits them best. This also opens up Battlefield to different types of classes other than the usual Recon, Support, Assault, and Medic archetypes. There are ten specialists available in Battlefield 2042.

There's also the 'Plus System' in Battlefield 2042 that gives players the ability to change their weapon attachments on the fly. If your assault rifle has an ACOG scope that isn't needed on a close quarters map, remove the optics and revert back to iron sights to get a clearer shot. Here are all the best guns in Battlefield 2042.

Hearts of Iron 4 meta – combat width, division templates, and more

So, you want to know about the new Hearts of Iron 4 meta? With the release of Hearts of Iron IV's No Step Back expansion, the WW2 strategy game has changed in several significant ways, and we're not just talking about HOI4 supply. One of the stated goals of the free 1.11 patch that accompanied it is to shake up the grand strategy game's previous - stale - meta of specific division templates and combat widths.

It's safe to say that things have changed, that's for sure. Whether this new meta will get as stale as the old one remains to be seen, but early indications suggest that there are more viable options now, especially with the new supply system making larger divisions less useable than they used to be.

If you're a veteran looking for the topline on what's new, or a new player trying to understand the conversation and whatever the hell a 40/20 is, we hope this guide will help you get up to speed on the Hearts on Iron IV No Step Back meta.

Genshin Impact outfits – available skins and what’s coming next

Genshin Impact outfits – available skins and what's coming next

After months of the community asking for character outfits, Genshin Impact gives players the chance to change their character's outfits using the skins system. This system was introduced in the Genshin Impact 1.6 update, which also welcomed the Anemo Sword user Kazuha to the game. Ayaka, the Cyro Sword user, arrived in the second banner in Genshin Impact 1.6.

One of the big questions surrounding the skin system was how skins were planned to be distributed. As Genshin Impact locks characters behind gacha mechanics, players were worried that skins may be sold using the same system. The 1.6 livestream revealed two methods for unlocking skins: purchasing them outright, and exchanging them for specific items collected during an event. If you happen to miss the event, the skin will make its way to the Character Outfit Shop in the future.

This is only the beginning of the skin system, so don't feel bad if your favourite character doesn't have a skin just yet. There hasn't been a new skin since the 1.6 update back in June, but it looks like Genshin Impact 2.4 is going to change that. Here are all of the Genshin Impact outfits so far.

Into the Echo is a “time travel odyssey” MMORPG and it hits pre-alpha this week

Into the Echo is a “time travel odyssey” MMORPG and it hits pre-alpha this week

Announced in April and revealed with a brief teaser trailer in September this year, Into the Echo is an upcoming "time travel odyssey" MMORPG. While details on the game are light on the ground right now, the story and concepts shared so far are intriguing - and now developer Etlok Studios is giving a small batch of players the chance to dive into a pre-alpha later this week.

The Toronto-based studio shares in a press release that it's giving 250 players the chance to dive into the early build for its pre-alpha debut on the weekend of December 4-5. It's a small group of playtesters that'll be selected from those who sign up to try it out on the game's site, though additional keys will release "in batches over the coming months", the studio adds, so if you miss out this time there's still a chance you might get to give it a whirl pretty soon.

The MMORPG is set in the mystical land of Raava, a place struck by a cosmic event a million years ago which imbued its people with a special power called Qen. "Revered by some and feared by others, Qen has been a part of life for the Raavai," the devs explain on the game's site. "Battles were fought and kingdoms were destroyed for the mastery over Qen until the formation of The Order of the Silver Birch. But the centuries-long peace seems to be once again threatened.

Guild Wars 2’s End of Dragons beta lets you try the MMO’s new siege turtle mount

Guild Wars 2’s End of Dragons beta lets you try the MMO’s new siege turtle mount

Guild Wars 2 is getting another open beta for its upcoming End of Dragons expansion today. The fourth beta is set to run until December 4, and features the new siege turtle mount and all nine of the new elite specialisations while the latest beta's on.

We're quite taken with the giant turtle ourselves. While mounts get you where you need to go swiftly, there are fewer things more joyful than taking up most of the room with a giant mount you're keen to show off. The siege turtle fits that bill nicely, we think. Once you raise it from a hatchling, you can outfit your giant turtle with jade cannons and jump sets. This isn't all for show either, as you can deal damage to foes by stomping on them from upon high. The mount can also carry two people, because giant siege turtles are best enjoyed with pals.

You're also getting to try Guild Wars 2's new elite specialisations. You've got the Willbender for the Guardian, the Vindicator for the Revenant, and many more.

Factories are gearing up to produce Nvidia RTX 4000 series GPUs ahead of 2022

Factories are gearing up to produce Nvidia RTX 4000 series GPUs ahead of 2022

The best graphics cards are still scarce and expensive in 2021, but the industry is still looking ahead to the future, with rumblings of yearly Intel Arc Xe releases and a complete Nvidia Geforce RTX 3000 series refresh. Yet, despite component shortages, it looks like the green team's ambitions for next year stretch beyond current-gen re-releases, as new reports suggest that factories are already gearing up to produce RTX 4000 GPUs.

According to a DigiTimes report spotted by Chiakokhua, Nvidia's RTX 4000 series could arrive next year and Taiwan factories are going "all-out to support 5nm RTX40 generation". While previous leaks also suggest a 2022 launch, this new industry report suggests manufacturing is about to kick off, adding clout to previous release date claims.

Digitimes' article doesn't outline an ETA, so it's hard to say whether the Lovelace lineup will release after Nvidia's RTX 3000 plans, or if both will simultaneously emerge on the scene in 2022. If this is the case, we could end up with a wide variety of RTX series graphics cards, including a new RTX 2060, revamped RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 cards, and next-generation RTX 4070, RTX 4080, and RTX 4090 GPUs.
