Op-Ed: Regarding the Intentional Destruction of Our Heroes Posted: 30 Nov 2021 03:55 PM PST
The “Critical Drinker” holds forth on why modern Hollywood is so very bad. It is by design.
His most recent video on the topic is well worth viewing:
He's right.
There is also simply an element of Marxism involved.
The Frankfurt School, long ago, realized that they could not compete with any capitalist economists on any rational argument, so they quite deliberately and openly adopted a policy of merely accusing capitalism of being responsible for any and every evil and ill imaginable, including things having no relation to economics, such as race relations and the war between the sexes.
This was called "Critical Theory" of which one branch "Critical Race Theory" has been making headlines of late.
"Deconstruction" is Critical Theory in regard to art and entertainment: it is the approach that all stories, films, and so on, serve as propaganda for the class interests of the oppressors to cow the oppressed, including innocent boy's adventure tales. By this theory, everything is a sinister attack by the oppressor class attempting to maintain its power; everything is evil.
Hence, the only good storytelling is propaganda exposing the stories of the oppressor class as frauds: the false mask of heroism must be ripped away.
A flawless heroine from the oppressed group must be propped in place, and this is done as a revolutionary act meant to shock the bourgeoisie. The more shocked and annoyed they are, the more revolutionary hence admirable the work.
By placing an oppressed-group heroine in the shoes of the oppressor-group hero, audience expectations are subverted, as part of a Pavlovian attempt to reorder their thinking into revolutionary socialist conformity.
Now, actually showing the diversity hire strong female character actually going through the steps of actually doing something heroic, something involving sacrifice or selflessness or suffering or self-awareness, would affirm the bourgeoisie social values and moral thinking it is the firm purpose of the revolution to overthrow.
Having the Wizard of Oz hand out rewards to scarecrows, tin men, or talking lions simply will not do, since the whole charm and point of that famous scene is that these humble heroes had in themselves the virtues they sought all along, as the audience saw when they rescued their friend from a wicked witch. In Critical Theory, to deconstruct this narrative, the wicked witch must be glorified as good, and the white-privileged farmgirl must be humiliated.
And when a Marxist gives out rewards, he is a bigger humbug than any wandering carnival wizard. Marxism grants them to those who do not deserve them and never will: the oppressed identities that he thinks actually are brainless, heartless, and craven: as when elevating military officers not for bravery but for gender dysphoria; or christening warships for sodomites.
Likewise, in a deconstructed narrative of the heroine's journey, the diversity girl must be simply given the medal, the diploma, and the testimonial of hero and scholar and philanthropist without ever being shown earning any of those things.
The purpose is not to entertain the audience with tales of soldiers and saints shown doing admirable acts. The purpose is to condition the audience to invert normal morality.
Got that? Under Marxist theory, entertainment is not meant to entertain the audience but to shock, annoy, and anger them.
Mission accomplished, Hollywood.

Not Spider-Man’s Endgame: Tom Holland Doing 3 More Spidey Films Posted: 30 Nov 2021 01:10 PM PST
Although it’s being billed as Spider-Man: Endgame — a Spider-Man movie so big and so historic, it’s pulling in characters from across 20 years of live-action Spider-Man movies. This third film in the “Homecoming” trilogy, Spider-Man: No Way Home, will wrap up a trilogy of films that began with 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, and continued with 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, but it won’t be the last we see of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Fandango reports.
Not by a long shot.
With tickets now on sale for Spider-Man: No Way Home (in theaters December 17), Fandango spoke with producer Amy Pascal, who was not only an integral part of the earlier Spider-Man film franchises starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, but she was also a key figure in negotiating the game-changing collaboration between Sony Pictures, which owns the film rights for Spider-Man, and Marvel Studios, which makes films and TV shows for Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pascal was quick to confirm that Sony will continue to collaborate with Marvel Studios on Spider-Man movies, and those movies will indeed star Tom Holland.
“This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel – [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie,” Pascal revealed. “We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.”
After seeing how impressive the latest film’s pre-sales are, this should be no surprise.

No Way Home’s Pre-Sales Just Beat Avengers: Endgame & Last Jedi Posted: 30 Nov 2021 10:55 AM PST
While some in the industry are still trying to blame a lackluster box office on the pandemic, think again: Sony's Spider-Man: No Way Home in its first day of pre-sales yesterday on Fandango already beat that of 2019's Avengers: Endgame; that movie ultimately turning into the biggest domestic opening of all-time with $357.1M. In addition, the presales for Spider-Man: No Way Home, which opens on Dec. 17, outstripped the first day advance ticket sales of Black Widow in two hours time, that Disney/Marvel movie previously owning the online ticket retailer's best record of 2021.
The first day presales for Spider-Man: No Way Home are higher than those for pre-pandemic titles such as Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. In a Fandango survey of 2K moviegoers, Spider-Man: No Way Home was chosen as the winter's most anticipated movie.

Rumor: Sam Raimi & Marc Webb Brought In to Consult on Spider-Man 3 Posted: 30 Nov 2021 08:20 AM PST
Another day, another rumor about the impending Marvel sequel Spider-Man: No Way Home, this time with very surprising reports claiming that previous Spider-Man series filmmakers Sam Raimi and Marc Webb were consulted on the web-slinger’s next adventure. Following Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man being revealed by Mysterio at the end of 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next sequel will likely begin with the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler’s life and reputation turned completely upside down, so he turns to his friend and colleague Doctor Strange to use magic to help him restore his secret identity. Unfortunately for both Parker and The Sorcerer Supreme, the spell goes catastrophically wrong, allowing supervillains (and perhaps even superheroes) from different universes who have already fought a Spider-Man to enter the current Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Of course, like almost everything else about Spider-Man: No Way Home, this is just a rumor at this point, but given all of the confirmed cameos (as well as a couple that are still a rumor), Raimi and Webb’s perspective would make sense. In fact, the source indicates that the production team behind Spider-Man: No Way Home is dealing with the already established Spider-Man universes in a very intriguing way.
Pay close attention to the second No Way Home trailer that dropped last week, specifically to the part when Stephen Strange says, "They all die, fighting Spider-Man." Given that these iterations of Spidey villains are the same ones we saw in the previous films all those years ago, some of these characters' deaths don't line up. The first example would be Sandman from Spider-Man 3, whom we know Peter Parker forgave and let go be free following their confrontation. The other example would be The Lizard from The Amazing Spider-Man, who was jailed at the end of their conflict. So how would they have died, according to what Strange says? Sources close to the production have informed us that the lore from the universes of these 2 Spider-Men (Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield) will be expanded upon during the film. We'll be given some backstory as to what the Spidey’s have been up to in their world since their sagas ended. This includes learning about how Sandman died in the years following Spider-Man 3 and how Lizard passed away years after The Amazing Spider-Man. Another significant point addressed during this film is the kind of toll that being Spider-Man has taken on Maguire's and Garfield's adaptations.
This type of world-building plot is going to be significant for the fans of these franchises. Jon Watts had the uphill task of not only developing his own iteration of Spider-Man but continuing and building upon the previous iterations that are already such recognizable characters in pop culture. Luckily, sources also tell us that the former directors (Raimi and Webb) were consulted during the development of these characters, so at least knowing their vision will be continued as the directors intended should be reassuring for some fans.
What do you think of this rumor? Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 17, 2021, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. The post Rumor: Sam Raimi & Marc Webb Brought In to Consult on Spider-Man 3 appeared first on Bleeding Fool. |
Is the MCU Brand Damaged? Hawkeye Performs Worse than Loki, WandaVision, and Falcon Posted: 30 Nov 2021 04:45 AM PST
The first episode of Marvel's Hawkeye on Disney+ drew 1.5M U.S. households over the Wednesday-Sunday holiday stretch, while 1.3M stuck around and watched the second episode.
This is via Deadline and according to the latest streaming viewership stats from Samba TV which measures 3M U.S. households, and what they watch on streaming over a five-minute increment. That first episode number for Hawkeye trails the 5-day U.S. household viewership figure for Disney+/Marvel's Loki which was watched by 2.5M homes over June 9-13 by -40%. Hawkeye's first episode premiere also ranks behind Loki's finale which pulled in 1.9M homes over five days per Samba TV. Hawkeye's 5-day is also behind the 3-day premieres of Disney+/Marvel's Falcon and the Winter Solider (1.8M) and WandaVision (1.6M).
The number of Disney+ subscribers stands at 118.1M worldwide, with roughly more than a third of that coming from North America. This means less than 3% of their subscribers have bothered to watch the latest Marvel Studios series, which seems strange given that this one focuses on one of the original Avengers team members. In fact, Hawkeye has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his first appearance as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in 2011’s Thor.
This is on the heels of tentpole films like Black Widow, Shang Chi, and Eternals all progressively underperforming and performing lower than each one’s predecessor. As we reported yesterday, their latest animation ‘Encato,’ premiered as a flop at the box office. Could we be at peak Disney and the MCU? Has Disney abused the Marvel Studios brand? Or is Hawkeye just not a very popular character? Perhaps next month’s Spider-Man sequel will sufficiently reinvigorate the struggling brand.
Hawkeye, which critics have praised at 93% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, follows Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) as she takes up the bow and arrow and title of the Avenger Hawkeye, as she encounters the original hero Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) in NYC while he's on holiday with his family. Hawkeye is the fourth live-action MCU series on Disney+.

Why Stephen King (& DC Comics) Chose Batman Over Superman Posted: 30 Nov 2021 04:15 AM PST
For those familiar with the writings of veteran horror-thriller novelist Stephen King, this will definitely not be a surprise. All the same, I thought this could make a good case study in research for somebody who made it clear he considers the guy who lives in the dark superior in every way to the guy who lives in the light. Case in point: the introduction King wrote for the 400th Batman issue from October 1986, at least 35 years ago, as seen in the scans below:
King said he always chose Batman. He tries to assure everybody he never disliked Superman, but then he goes on to argue the Man of Steel was too strong and capable, without even considering that in a sci-fi world, you could still conceive enough obstacles to fill a whole galaxy, including, but not limited to, Kryptonite and the magical energies Superman was vulnerable to as established by writers in the Silver Age. And this was a novelist who dealt with sci-fi/fantasy elements in some of his books, even as horror was the main name of the game. King goes on to address the 1978 Superman film ads that said, “you’ll believe a man can fly”, and in King’s case, he didn’t, and not just in the movies, but “not completely in the comic books” either. I guess that means he didn’t believe Green Lantern could fly with the help of his power ring, huh? Or that Hawkman could do the same with the 9th Metal devices he built.
He even describes Perry White as a precursor to J. Jonah Jameson without clearly acknowledging the fundamental differences in their prescribed MO: the former was depicted as an honest news editor, while the latter was mostly dishonest in his coverage of, but not limited to, Spider-Man. King wasn’t even impressed with Superman’s cold breath-blowing, and probably not with his heat-ray vision either. I get the feeling King’s failure to appreciate Superman for what he was created as, sci-fi premise or otherwise, simply stemmed from inability to appreciate optimism. After all, it’s not like King’s novels were all built upon brightness so much as they were upon darkness. Did any of DC’s other heroes in publication at the time ever get the kind of introduction to an anniversary issue as King lavished upon Batman? Sure, Ray Bradbury wrote the introduction to the 400th issue of the Superman series originally launched in 1939 (later modified to Adventures of in 1987, as a third spinoff was launched by John Byrne), which conveniently also came out on an October in 1984, but that was only one page, not two, like King’s was. I get the feeling the publishers did not put as much value on an opinion for the Man of Steel as they did for Batman, and that’s what really dismays me.
And if that’s what King thought then, who knows what he thinks of the Masked Manhunter now, at a time when Batman’s franchise has fallen victim to political correctness as much as any other DC/Marvel book, and Bruce Wayne’s another character who may be on the verge of being kicked to the curb for the sake of a social justice substitute? A similar situation’s taken place in Batman Beyond/Urban Legends #7. If King’s got no complaints, wouldn’t that make his introduction to the anniversary issue from 35 years back moot? In which case, one could argue the UK Guardian has a point, that the only thing about King that’s amazing is his ego. Let’s also not forget this guy’s a real far-leftist, and it sure isn’t doing much to ensure his work will age well.
Also, I know Daredevil wasn’t much more than 2 decades old at the time King wrote his Batman intro, but still, as I’ve argued a time or two before, how come these authors with an overinflated ego wouldn’t offer Stan Lee’s superhero who lived even more in the dark than Bruce Wayne ever did some high regard? Is it because unlike DC’s famous vigilante, Matt Murdock has superpowers, even if it wasn’t super-strength? One sure thing, there’s no chance King would ever offer high praise to the Punisher, and definitely not today. Lest we forget, Frank Castle’s own co-creator Gerry Conway’s been otherwise shunning his Marvel vigilante creation for the sake of wokeism. Which reminds me, the chances King would ever write a story like The Green Mile today are much lower, and would be less accepted at the Oscars, because some have argued since that the novel/film embody a “magical negro” stereotype. Indeed, it’s not like King’s all that beloved among modern leftists these days as he used to be, based in part on these issues. In the end, as noted before, it’s far from surprising a novelist so obsessed with the dark in some way or other would supply the introduction for the standout representative of all that’s dark at DC. That’s the problem when you have a whole industry where darkness is overvalued, and then look where it leads to: an inability to genuinely appreciate brightness and optimism.

‘Princess Bride’ Star Remains Steadfastly Against any Reboot of the Classic Film Posted: 29 Nov 2021 03:55 PM PST
These days, it seem like remakes are the go-to for a brain-dead Hollywood, and sadly they are nearly always a moneymaker, as fans of the original can’t help but be interested in seeing what’s been done to a narrative they either grew up watching or have some other connection to.
Thankfully, actor Cary Elwes isn’t on board with the idea of reproducing perfectly wonderful and popular films just because they’re older, as evidenced by his continued insistence that The Princess Bride should never be remade.
While numerous movies from the 1980s have been remade or relaunched with varying degrees of success, The Princess Bride has managed to stay true to its original vision, and anything less would be…well… unthinkable. It still remains one of the most famous and well-received films of the 1980s.
The film is about a grandfather, played by the legendary Peter Falk, narrating a story to his grandson. It was directed by Rob Reiner and based from William Goldman’s 1973 novel. The story is told by an ensemble cast that includes Elwes, Robin Wright, Chris Sarandon, Andre the Giant, Mandy Patinkin, and Christopher Guest, as well as Billy Crystal, Mel Smith, and Peter Cook who make memorable cameo appearances.
Elwes reiterated his stance that there is no compelling reason for The Princess Bride to be remade in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
"For the studios, the cost of promotion and advertising has become so prohibitive now that they want to cut down on that. Their feeling is that when they do a reboot or remake, they have a target audience, so they don't have to spend as much on marketing. So I understand the motivation. But my theory is, look, if the movie is popular and it's done well, and people love it, I think it's pretty much best left alone. If a film has landed in the hearts of the public, then, to me, it is not a good idea to try and revisit it."
In recent years, there has been a spike in movie sequels revisiting 80s and 90s films, resulting in films such as Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Hocus Pocus 2, and the most current line of Halloween films, all of which have rejuvenated previous titles and tapped into its readymade fan following. While The Princess Bride is a self-contained story that doesn’t require a sequel, any remake would almost certainly do more harm than good.
Unfortunately, as bereft of ideas as Hollywood is these days, any resistance to a sequel or remake probably won’t last indefinitely. The post ‘Princess Bride’ Star Remains Steadfastly Against any Reboot of the Classic Film appeared first on Bleeding Fool. |
Legendary Queen Guitarist Joins the Anti-Woke Against Toxic Cancel Culture Posted: 29 Nov 2021 01:15 PM PST
Brian May is best known as the songwriter and guitar legend who backed Freddie Mercury in the British band Queen. The guitar master is also an astrophysicist and a noted environmentalist who has called on musicians to come together again and repeat 2007′s 'Live Earth' concerts, and is a not only a vegan, but is also an anti-Brexit liberal. So it’s surprising to see him on the anti-Cancel Culture team with the rest of us.
As reported by Stephen Crowder:
Of all the celebrities coming out, either intentionally or accidentally, as anti-woke, you wouldn't assume it would be British celebrities. You know, what with England being a socialist hellhole. One that America broke up with, and we are never, ever, ever, getting back together. John Cleese has been vocal . JK Rowling's battle with woke-nincompoops has been legend–wait for it–dary . Now, we can add Queen guitarist Brian May to the list. May recently spoke out against the Brit Awards removing gender-specific award categories. I'm guessing a producer was afraid of what randos on Twitter would think and made the decision for faux-inclusion reasons. He then drew a comparison with his own band and late frontman Freddie Mercury. Mercury, besides being the greatest vocalist in the history of rock and roll, was out and about gay when it wasn't fashionable to be so. In 2021, that wouldn't be enough. "We didn't have to stop and think: 'Ooh, now, should we work with [Freddie]? Is he the right color? Is he the right sexual proclivity?' None of that happened, and now I find it frightening that you have to be so calculating about everything. …[Queen] would be forced to have people of different colors and different sexes and we would have to have a trans [person]. You know life doesn’t have to be like that.”
May also discussed social media and how the various platforms offer users ‘instant gratification’, but it also promotes cancel culture. When asked how Freddie would have handled this, he said: “I don't find it easy living in this world today. I think Freddie would have been the same.”
The 74-year-old rocker also added that the legendary band Queen would “struggle to be relevant today” without a “trans person in the band”.
Welcome to the resistance, Brian. The post Legendary Queen Guitarist Joins the Anti-Woke Against Toxic Cancel Culture appeared first on Bleeding Fool. |
Marvel Studios’ ‘Werewolf By Night’ to Begin Filming in February Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:55 AM PST
We know that there is going to be a Werewolf by Night: Halloween Special coming to Disney+. Now we’ve spotted the following tweet showing a filming schedule tells us that the working title for the project is "Buzzcut", and it will be filming in Atlanta in February and March, with Gael Garcia Bernal as the star and showing that it's being produced by Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito and Victoria Alonso.
There is also a brief synopsis that reads: "A new Werewolf by Night is prowling the Southwest, but all is not as it seems! A young man, a family curse, and an unholy experiment prove a dangerous combination for a small town in Arizona. All young Jake wants is to protect his people, but who will protect him from the monster within?"
According to this synopsis, it reads like they're going with the Jake Gomez version of the character that was just introduced in the comics last year, rather than the original classic character Jack Russell. Also, they refer to him as a young man while Bernal is 42, so it is possible that Bernal is not playing Jake. There have been rumors that Marvel was looking at Hamilton and In the Heights star Anthony Ramos for the role prior to Bernal's casting.
Whichever version they go with, will Disney’s Werewolf tie into the Moon Knight series as the character of Moon Knight debuted in Werewolf by Night? The post Marvel Studios' ‘Werewolf By Night’ to Begin Filming in February appeared first on Bleeding Fool. |
