Now that's what I call PC games news 2021!

The end of 2021 is nigh. We're all getting ready to hunker down and gorge ourselves on heaps of festive foodstuffs and great games before another year of gaming news shows up on our doorstep, commanding our attention like an uproarious, slightly soused relative. While we don't yet know what 2022 will bring (well, other than Elden Ring), your trusty PCGamesN news crew has been here all year, clad in proudest orange, spelunking deep into the news mines to gather all the biggest stories for you, our lovely readers.

With the year now almost behind us, now's the time to reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly of gaming news in 2021. To that end, we've fetched a festive feast worth of goodies from the vaults, hitting all the stories that'll warm your cockles to remember, and some you might have missed along the way.

Starting with news that everyone's favourite tomb-raiding hero, Indiana Jones, will return to PC courtesy of MachineGames and Bethesda, and rounding off with the arrival of Final Fantasy XIV's Endwalker expansion (impeccably rendered grapes included), here's our roundup of this year's greatest hits. Or, as we prefer, Now, That's What We Call NEWS 2021!

Today’s free game from Epic is Overcooked-style co-op mayhem

Today’s free game from Epic is Overcooked-style co-op mayhem

It's another day in the two weeks leading up to the new year, and you know that means - yet another entry in Epic's fortnight (ha) of daily free PC games. Today's giveaway is one for party night - a madcap take on co-op games where you've got to pack up and get your furniture moved.

You can grab Moving Out for free on the usual Epic Games Store promotion page from now until December 29 at 8am PST / 11am EST / 4pm GMT, at which point it'll be replaced by another freebie. As always, you'll 'purchase' the game at a price of zero dollars, and it'll remain in your library just like any game you might pay money for.

Here's how the devs explain it: "As a newly certified Furniture Arrangement & Relocation Technician, you'll take on moving jobs all across the busy town of Packmore. Smooth Moves may not be the biggest moving company, but there's no task too dangerous or strange for this busy team of go-getters. Grow your business to brave new heights, recruit colourful customizable characters, and save your town from furniture peril!"

Some of the best city-building games on PC are going cheap on Steam

Some of the best city-building games on PC are going cheap on Steam

There are plenty of great city-building games on our home platform, and a bunch of them are going cheap as part of Steam's ongoing winter sale. So, if you're in the mood to establish your own fledgling city - or settlement - and watch it flourish, now might be a good time to see what's out there.

Tropico 6, Limbic Entertainment's 2019 city builder, puts you in charge of large archipelagos as el presidente, and you'll get to decide whether you're going to be a feared dictator of Tropico or a more benevolent leader overseeing a peaceful, prosperous era for the island state. The game builds on the series with new transportation and infrastructure-building options, a "revised" research system, an election speech feature, and online multiplayer for up to four players. It's currently half-price on Steam in the winter sale, making it £17.49 / $19.99 as of writing, and there are a bunch of different editions and bundles with discounts up to 65% on the store page if you're keen to browse.

Frostpunk, 11 bit studios' 2018 city builder, brings a big survival twist to the genre. You're in charge of the last city remaining on earth in the wake of a volcanic winter that's devastated the alternative late-19th century world.

This Stardew Valley mod makes managing your inventory way easier

This Stardew Valley mod makes managing your inventory way easier

It's probably safe to say that, while it's a useful and challenging gameplay mechanic, inventory management is not always the most thrilling aspect of an otherwise great game. As Stardew Valley fans know well, managing slots crammed full of goods is an important part of growing a flourishing farm, but it can take some work to get all your stuff where it needs to be. Handily, a new Stardew Valley mod helps to make it a breeze.

Creator gaussfire's aptly named Convenient Inventory mod adds some new features to the player's inventory, which makes keeping on top of it all a lot easier. As the modder describes, managing your backpack full of materials and other goodies becomes a bit of a repetitive process after a while: "open chest, deposit items, close chest, open chest, deposit items, close chest, open chest, deposit items, close chest..." and so on. But, the modder proffers a handy alternative: "What if you could stow away all the items taking up space in your backpack, instantly, while keeping the important ones?"

The mod adds a new feature that lets you quick stack to nearby chests, which shows up as a new button in the inventory UI. Hit that, and you'll send your items to - yep, you guessed it - chests lying around within a certain range (assuming they've got capacity). It's not clear what this range is by default, but it seems the mod's config options let you set this yourself in terms of number of tiles from the player character.
