Even Book of Boba Fett’s Surprise Cameo Couldn’t Save Episode 3

Posted: 13 Jan 2022 03:45 PM PST

While the season finale of The Mandalorian's season two sent Star Wars fans wild over the unexpected appearance Luke Skywalker, virtually portrayed by Mark Hamill, those who love a good unexpected celebrity appearance in the Star Wars universe were treated to a somewhat less inspired appearance at the end of The Book of Boba Fett – Chapter 3: The Streets of Mos Espa, even though the episode in question was pretty poor.

SPOILERS AHEAD

The latest episode saw Jabba The Hutt's twin cousins take out a hit on Boba Fett, sending the Wookie bounty hunter Black Krrssantan after him. While it was not surprising that things didn't go as planned for Krrssantan, the Wookie does find himself trapped in the familiar pit that once housed the rancor. Following the failed assassination attempt, the Hutts show up at Boba's palace to call a truce and declare they will be leaving Tatooine. As a way of an apology for their actions, they gift him a rancor calf, which comes with its own trainer. And who does that trainer turn out to be? None other than friend of Robert Rodriquez, and movie-buff favorite Danny Trejo.

Considering how deeply involved Robert Rodriguez is in the Star Wars project, and how often Trejo has a habit of turning up in the director's work, it probably didn't take too much to get the 77-year-old, who has appeared in movies such as From Dusk til Dawn, Machete Kills and Con Air, to make a cameo appearance in the new episode.

The reintroduction of the rancor, which played a fun part in Return of the Jedi almost 40 years ago, was likely well received by fans. With a new rancor calf set to grow up to be as big and fearsome as its predecessor, a few people are eager to see how the beast and Trejo, its handler, will be handled by Disney in the future.

Episode two wasn’t too bad, but episode three also killed off some Tusken Raiders, the wardrobes were handled poorly, the space vespas looked like something out of Spy Kids meets Power Rangers. How are they able to afford tricked out space rides, but keep claiming they’re poor… and the fight choreography is cheap looking. Only Danny Trejo’s appearance kept this episode from being a complete failure. I wish Boba would keep his helmet on more too.

If you’re enjoying this, good for you, but that was typical Disney reimagining Star Wars to me.

Despite Mixed Reviews, The Witcher Season 2 Among Netflix’s Most Watched Series

Posted: 13 Jan 2022 01:15 PM PST

Netflix audiences have been busy tossing their coins to "The Witcher," and it shows. The second season of the fantasy epic, which blends the genres of horror, action, romance, drama and occasionally comedy, has joined the streamer's most-viewed TV shows of all time list, amassing 462.5 million hours of view-time.

Season 2, starring Henry Cavill as the titular monster hunter, along with Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra and Joey Batey, is now on Netflix's Top 10 alongside its inaugural season, which garnered 541.010 million hours of viewership during its first 28 days on the streamer.

Both seasons of "The Witcher" focus on the intertwined destinies of three powered individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where magic survives and thrives, and good and evil are not easily identified amongst its many humans, elves and gnomes. Season 2 follows Geralt of Rivia (Cavill), who is distraught over Yennefer's (Chalotra) supposed death at the Battle of Sodden and has taken on the role of surrogate father to Princess Cirilla (Allan). He takes Ciri to his childhood home of Kaer Morhen, where Ciri meets other Witchers and begins training with them. While elves and humans are preoccupied with a struggle for supremacy outside its walls, Geralt is trying to protect Ciri from the dangers she poses to herself.

Zombie Film ‘Final Cut’ Drops Sundance After Festival Changes to Virtual Over COVID Fears

Posted: 13 Jan 2022 10:55 AM PST

Oscar-winning filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius ("The Artist") announced that his latest film Final Cut will no longer premiere as part of the Sundance lineup after the film festival canceled its in-person component. In a statement, Hazanavicius and the team of filmmakers explained their decision to pull the project.

"We fully support Sundance's decision to move the festival to a virtual format, as the safety of audiences and filmmakers is of paramount importance," they stated. "However, we believe that it is best to premiere 'Final Cut' in a theater with a live audience and have made the difficult decision to remove the film from this year's festival. We wish Sundance and all the filmmakers involved an excellent festival and look forward to sharing 'Final Cut' with audiences very soon.”

Things go badly for a small film crew shooting a low-budget zombie movie when they are attacked by real zombies. Final Cut, the French remake of Shinichiro Ueda’s 2017 Japanese film One Cut Of The Dead center on a zombie outbreak that happens while a crew is trying to shoot a low-budget zombie movie. Ueda’s original film was highly praised for breathing fresh life into the genre, and since Hazanavicius’ The Artist won five Oscars in 2012 including Best Picture, the French remake is highly anticipated. Final Cut stars Romain Duris, Bérénice Bejo, Grégory Gadebois, Finnegan Oldfield, Matilda Lutz, and Raphaël Quenard.

Sundance organizers announced last week that the 2022 edition of the film festival would be presented virtually, due to rising cases of COVID-19. "Final Cut" is the only film to date to drop off the Sundance lineup, after the festival pivoted to a virtual model in 2021.

The 2022 Sundance Film Festival will begin virtually on Thursday, January 20. The festival, which runs January 20-30, is just one of a growing list of notable events to cancel or postpone their in-person plans.
