Everything You Were Wondering About Orange Wine Posted: 25 Jan 2022 02:00 PM PST Just when you thought you've figured wine out, a new style of wine hits the scene and it's time to catch up or you'll be left behind. Enter: skin-contact wine. You may have noticed a new category listed on your favorite restaurant's wine list, or an unfamiliar array of wine colors on the retail shelves. Don't fret! Skin-contact wine, which is commonly referred to as "orange wine," has been around for centuries but really became mainstream in the last decade. So what made this rare, ancient way of making wine the most asked for wine over the last few years? Was it the growing presence on trendy wine lists and retail stores? Are we to thank Action Bronson and his love of French natural wine bars? It doesn't matter! Skin-contact wine is here to stay. Here's the cliff notes on skin-contact winesDon't be alarmed when you hear the terms skin-contact and orange wine being used interchangeably. When it came to brand marketing, the term "orange wine" won the popularity contest and the rest was history. Wine professionals prefer to use the term skin-contact because "orange wine" creates a whole slew of confusion: First, the wine is not made from oranges, it's made from white wine grapes, and second, it has a range of colors outside of orange so the name can be quite misleading.
8 Totally Doable Decor Swaps to Refresh Your Home Posted: 20 Jan 2021 05:30 AM PST The advent of a new year often brings with it a desire—even enthusiasm—to refresh our spaces. While I sometimes think that January is just another month on the calendar and that home improvement can happen anytime during the year, I can't help but be drawn to the idea of an update in the beginning of the year—especially if it doesn't require a ton of time, effort, or money. So, we tapped some of our favorite design experts for their easiest solutions to make over our spaces. Here's to making our homes more peaceful, practical, and pretty in 2022—and beyond.
We Stan Dolly Parton & Her Brand-New Baking Mixes Posted: 25 Jan 2022 10:44 AM PST The one thing it seems that all Americans can agree on is Dolly Parton. She's a national treasure. The queen of country, who has spoken in favor of Black Lives Matter and helped to fund the COVID-19 vaccine (again, we stan), has teamed up with Duncan Hines for the sweetest partnership ever—beginning in March, home bakers will be able to stock up on Dolly's favorite baking mixes inspired by her family's favorite southern recipes. The Dolly Parton x Duncan Hines baking line includes two cake mixes: Southern Style Coconut Flavored Cake Mix and Southern Style Banana Flavored Cake Mix, which will retail for $2.19. From Our Shop "I have always loved to cook and, growing up in the South, I especially love that authentic Mom and Pop kind of cooking," said Dolly Parton in a statement. "I am excited to launch my own line of cake mixes and frostings with Duncan Hines, bringing that sweet, southern-style baking experience I enjoy to others." In addition to the two cake mixes, the collaboration also includes two frosting mixes: creamy buttercream and chocolate buttercream, each of which will retail for $2.09.
10 Feel-Good Snacks to Pick Up at Trader Joe's Posted: 25 Jan 2022 09:40 AM PST New year, same me…at least when it comes to my obsession with Trader Joe's. The experience of shopping for food at the beloved grocery store chain is so much more than a necessity—it's a never-ending scavenger hunt to find products I've never tried before. But sometimes it's easy to get a little too carried away with the excitement, resulting in moments of scarfing down entire bags of Patio Potato Chips and Smashing S'mores in one sitting. And then good ol' indigestion inevitably comes knocking at my door.
13 Lunar New Year Dessert Recipes to Devour Posted: 25 Jan 2022 08:00 AM PST Whether you follow traditions from the Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese—or another East or Southeast Asian—perspective, when it comes to Lunar New Year celebrations, you simply can't skip dessert. "The biggest holiday of the year, Chinese New Year, is the time when families reunite, cook a large feast, and admire a new year's moon," writes Kristina Cho in her cookbook Mooncakes & Milk Bread. "We enjoy my pau pau's steamed cakes, their tops bursting to signify the luck and prosperity you hope for in the year ahead." To hear a bit more about Cho's work, stay tuned for an upcoming episode of Genius Recipes Tapes podcast (even better, make a batch of the steamed cakes while you listen).
13 Decorating Rules We Love to Break Posted: 25 Jan 2022 05:30 AM PST The other day, I was on the treadmill, distracting myself with one of my favorite home decor podcasts"), and my attention latched on to something the hosts were chatting about: design crimes, specifically the ones they'd like gone in the new year. High on the list of offenders were karate-chopped pillows, overly styled coffee tables (ya know, the kind with no space to put down your drink), and matchy-matchy decor. I chuckled at most of them, but it did get me thinking: What "design crimes" am I guilty of in my own home? And is it an offense if it works for me? At the start of each year, design trends are on the minds of a lot of people. Which ones are we happy to turn our backs to? Which new ones will capture our imaginations (and wallets)? As a home editor, I'm obviously very invested, but I'm also firmly on Team Do-What-Makes-You-Happy. Trends expand our creative possibilities and rules give us a framework for action—to determine the height of your pendant light, for instance—but there's nothing wrong with letting a trend (or many) bypass you completely, or taking a rule and stretching its boundaries.
