| Blizzard announces its next game for PC and console, set in an “all-new universe” Posted: 25 Jan 2022 10:32 AM PST Blizzard has announced a new survival game in development for PC and console that will be set in an "all-new universe". Aside from those few details and a couple of small bits of concept art, information on the game is light. It looks like it's very early in development, too, as today's announcement comes alongside a hiring push for the project. "Blizzard is embarking on our next quest," the company says in the announcement. "We are going on a journey to a whole new universe, home to a brand-new survival game for PC and console. A place full of heroes we have yet to meet, stories yet to be told, and adventures yet to be lived. A vast realm of possibility, waiting to be explored." Job listings for level designers of various levels of seniority ask for someone who can create "immersive and explorable environments that you might find in a AAA game", as well as folks who can demonstrate "mastery of level design processes including, but not limited to, level flow, engagement design, pacing, storytelling, PVP, et cetera". Another listing for a server engineer suggests an online component, which should come as little surprise for a Blizzard title. | 70-year-old WoW player banned for six months after being mistaken for a bot Posted: 25 Jan 2022 10:23 AM PST A 70-year-old World of Warcraft fan could not play the MMO for six months after being flagged as a bot and banned. The situation was ultimately resolved, though, after a Reddit post blew up last week, so things have led to a happy ending. One of the 70-year-old's children took to the World of Warcraft subreddit last week to ask for help as contracting Blizzard support and GMs apparently yielded little result. They explained that their father had been banned for six months "for basically playing the game a way that Blizzard assumes bots do," even though he was playing no differently to how he had been for the past decade. "He's been playing WoW since the original launch of Burning Crusade," they explain. "He's a 70-year-old guy who loves to quest around and level new characters. He also doesn't talk much in chat at all. To the outside perspective... yeah, he seems like a bot. But, it's an old guy playing who loves the fantasy elements of the game and the world. He's probably made close to ten hunters at this point." RELATED LINKS: WoW Shadowlands review, The best WoW addons, WoW Classic leveling guide |
| Steam Lunar New Year Sale start time – GabeN gives for the first time in 2022 Posted: 25 Jan 2022 10:02 AM PST Valve still hasn't officially confirmed that we're even getting a Steam Lunar New Year Sale for 2022, but as always, the dates have leaked thanks to developers who've gotten early word on the discount promotion. So if you're eagerly awaiting the Steam Lunar New Year Sale start time, here's when you can expect to commit unspeakable acts of savings. The Steam Lunar New Year Sale is set to begin on Thursday, January 27 at 10am PST / 1pm EST / 6pm GMT and will last until February 3, according to leaked info obtained by SteamDB. The start comes at the usual Steam store reset time, and you can usually expect the store to be broken for a few minutes after the sale begins. The discounts will start showing normally shortly after the start time, don't worry. This will be the first Steam sale starting in 2022, though the 2021 Steam Winter Sale lasted a few days into January. As such, you can expect pretty similar discounts to those of the recently-ended sale, and if you were holding out on anything, now might be the time to splurge. | Twitter bot will take “a couple years” to play through Doom, one frame at a time Posted: 25 Jan 2022 09:43 AM PST Those of us who are helplessly addicted to Twitter are familiar with the phrase 'doomscrolling' - it's the act of scrolling through post after post about all the awful things going on in the world at a given moment. You can freshen your routine up a bit with the Doomscroll Doom Bot, a Twitter account dedicated to posting a complete playthrough of legendary FPS game Ultimate Doom, one frame at a time. The bot is posting images pulled from a Longplay Archive playthrough of Ultimate Doom, which can be found on YouTube if you want to watch it in the boring old-fashioned way. Every hour, the account posts a new frame, starting from the end and working backwards, one second at a time. Since it's 'running' at a single frame per second, you don't quite get the flipbook effect from scrolling through the posts that are up so far. Right now, it's still working through Ultimate Doom's final level, E4M8, which caps off the 'new' Thy Flesh Consumed episode it adds to the original set of levels. | Halo Infinite Forge mode release date – what you need to know Posted: 25 Jan 2022 09:01 AM PST When is the Halo Infinite Forge mode release date? Sure, Halo Infinite's multiplayer is pretty great and we've enjoyed climbing up the Halo Infinite ranks, but we all know Forge is where it's really at. Well, maybe campaign co-op as well but you're not here for that, are you? Forge mode is a staple of modern Halo games and a fan favourite that essentially acts as a content generation engine. With it, players can create their own customised map variants, modes, and more to be shared with the rest of the playerbase and enhance the fun-factor of multiplayer outside of the competitive seen and official playlists. Alongside campaign co-op, it's one of the two major features that weren't ready for the game's launch in December 2021, but hopefully it will release sometime this year. Forge mode is slated to launch alongside the FPS game's third multiplayer season, although when that will be is proving to be something of a moving target. Read on to find out everything we know about the Halo Infinite Forge release date. RELATED LINKS: Halo Infinite release date, Halo Infinite system requirements, Halo Infinite ranks |
| Oculus Quest 3 – release date, price, and specs of the Meta Quest Posted: 25 Jan 2022 09:00 AM PST The Oculus Quest 2 is a VR headset heavy hitter, and Meta is harnessing its success to fuel its Metaverse plans. Not only has the rumoured Oculus Quest Pro morphed into a different VR venture dubbed Project Cambria, but the company says the Oculus Quest 3 is still on the cards. Releasing a successor to one of the best VR headsets on the market isn't an unexpected move, but Meta recently rebranded its Quest lineup to better match its Facebook parent company name. Naturally, this means the Oculus Quest 2 could be the last of its kind, as the Oculus Quest 3 could bear a Meta Quest label instead. Meta's Quest is set to continue, and the gaming PC headset will likely take a different path to that of Project Cambria. Yet, both VR experiences could feature similar tech under the hood, which makes matching up rumours difficult. With that in mind, here's everything we know about the Oculus Quest 3, including its price, release date, and specs. | Posted: 25 Jan 2022 08:18 AM PST Looking for a guide to the Genshin Impact elements? Notoriously addictive gacha game Genshin Impact has taken the gaming world by storm - and whether you're just getting started in the beautiful world of Teyvat, or you're completely smitten with the charming anime game, there are a few crucial combat mechanics that you might need reminding of as you set off on your adventure. According to the lore, there are seven Genshin Impact gods, and each presides over a different elemental domain. The elements in Genshin Impact are: Pyro (fire), Geo (earth), Dendro (nature), Cryo (ice), Electro (lightning), Anemo (wind), and Hydro (water). Every character makes use of one of these elements - the Traveler, however, is able to use Anemo, Geo, or Electro. In battle, Genshin Impact elements combine to create powerful elemental reactions which you can use to devastate your foes. When building your Genshin Impact team, it's important to consider how these elements will synergise. The elemental affinities of your team members also passively combine into Elemental Resonance bonuses, giving you various different buffs if you have multiple characters of the same elemental type. Here's everything you need to know about Genshin Impact elements, and the elemental combos you can conjure up. | How to talk to Haven, Shanta, or Galactico in Fortnite Posted: 25 Jan 2022 08:08 AM PST Want to know where to find Haven, Shanta, and Galactico in Fortnite? One of this week's season challenges for the popular battle royale game asks you to find these Fortnite NPCs and talk with them. It sounds like a simple challenge, but it's far trickier if you don't know where to find them in advance, especially as one of them didn't appear until last week with the return of Tilted Towers. So who are these NPCs? Haven is a hippy flower girl who lives in her own little oasis deep in the desert. Shanta has come to the island via the ancestral plane to assist the inhabitants, and she wears enchanted armour. Galactico is the newest NPC of the bunch, who you can regularly see honing his soccer skills. You only need to talk to one of these NPCs to finish the challenge. Doing so rewards you with experience points to complete this season's battle pass. Each level up on the battle pass gives you points you can use to unlock new Fortnite skins or invest in some free Fortnite V-bucks. | How to glide after launching from Klombo’s blowhole in Fortnite Posted: 25 Jan 2022 08:08 AM PST Want to know how to throw a Klomberry while standing within ten metres of a Klombo in Fortnite? The latest Fortnite update introduces us to the gentle giants, stomping around and hovering up all the discarded items that eliminated players leave behind. Their favourite treats are Klomberries, and it's up to you to bring them this delicious treat. So far, the season challenges have had us complete relatively simple tasks such as knocking down Fortnite timber pines, destroying and collecting Fortnite telescope parts, and destroying Fortnite signal jammers. However, this week's challenges are a little more difficult as you need to interact with a computer terminal at a Mole Time drill site that IO agents guard, harvest stone from Fortnite temples, and of course, feed the elusive Klombo some Klomberries. This guide will help you find the Klombos, how to get to their blowholes, where you can harvest some Klomberries to feed them, and what happens when you eat the Klomberries yourself. Completing these challenges is worth doing as you will get some experience to put towards unlocking Fortnite skins and Fortnite V-bucks via the battle pass. | Rainbow Six Extraction operators Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:54 AM PST Want to know more about the Rainbow Six Extraction operators? Those familiar with Rainbow Six Siege operators will recognise many of the faces in Extraction. Their gadgets are almost the same ones they use in the popular FPS game, so you should feel right at home whether you're using Sledge's hammer or Alibi's holographic decoys. That said, there are enough differences between the two games that you will still need to adapt your playstyle. Sure, the gadgets are the same as they are in Siege but how they interact with the environment - and what they do to the Archæans that stand between you and safety - has changed a little bit. Weapon loadouts are also not the same. While operators like Ela may only choose from an SMG and a shotgun in Siege, she can now also use Zofia's LMG. Operators in Extraction that are from the same organisation share weapon pools, so FBI operators Pulse and Thermite can use each other's weapons. Here is the lowdown on every Rainbow Six Extraction operator, including their starting stats, gadgets, as well as the names of their locked abilities. | Elite Dangerous: Odyssey gets another round of performance improvements Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:51 AM PST One of the main issues that's plagued Elite Dangerous' ambitious first-person Odyssey expansion has been performance - it's tough to keep the space game running at a nice framerate while you're roaming the space game's planets on foot. Frontier Developments has released a new patch for Odyssey and Horizons today that improves optimisation and squashes some pesky bugs. In Odyssey, the developers have improved optimisation for several features, including cockpit and other transparent glass surfaces, galaxy and star maps, avatar decals, forward-lit visual effects, fine textures on planets, shadows, and emissive rescaling. The upshot of all this is that these things shouldn't hit your framerate quite as hard now, hopefully producing a smoother gameplay experience. Frontier says it's also fixed a few bugs, notably an issue that popped up while running with cutting tools. This is generally a bad idea for other reasons, but the game shouldn't throw a fit when you try it from now on. The team also says it's addressed a "quantum physics issue" that apparently would happen when multiple players attempted to grab the same item - the devs don't say what exactly was happening, but we're just going to assume it's a timeline split that'll have to be resolved in act three. | Corsair Virtuoso RGB Wireless XT review – a crystal clear microphone Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:47 AM PST The Corsair Virtuoso RGB Wireless XT addresses a longstanding problem with wireless gaming headsets: microphone quality. Cutting the cord usually comes with a cost of compression that reduces your dulcet tones to a distorted mess, but this upgraded version of the Corsair Virtuoso doesn't sacrifice your voice for freedom. In fact, it justifies its price tag as the closest wireless gaming headset we've seen to the best gaming microphones out there, even if it's not quite perfect. You get the headset, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB-C to USB-A cable, and a 2.4GHz dongle in the box. It also comes with a padded cloth carry case, which has just enough room to store it all. The carry case is decent enough, but not as robust as a hardshell alternative and the microfibre material inside feels cheap. Overall, the build quality of the Virtuoso XT headset is strong and comfortable to wear. Since I'm used to far cheaper models with less tech, It's slightly tighter than I would expect from a new headset and rested heavily around my ears at first, although I soon adjusted. | Respawn is working on a Star Wars strategy game with former XCOM devs Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:32 AM PST Respawn Entertainment is working on not one but three new Star Wars games. You may not be too surprised to hear that one of them is a follow up to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, though you're also getting a new first-person shooter and a strategy game. EA doesn't offer many details, though we know the strategy game is being developed through a production collaboration with former Firaxis art director Greg Foertsch's new studio Bit Reactor. EA says that Respawn will be on production duties while Bit Reactor handles development. During his time at Firaxis, Foertsch worked on XCOM 2, Civilization IV, and more before leaving in 2019. Following a stint in consultation, Foertsch then unveiled Bit Reactor last week. Alongside Foertsch, you've also got other lead developers and creatives who worked on the XCOM series. If you're looking for a tease on what Bit Reactor's Star Wars game could look like, the studio explained in a press release that its aim is to "usher in the future" of turn-based tactics games. "As game genres of all types see refreshed takes in this new generation of technology, one thing is clear in that turn-based tactic games have been greatly overlooked and have an enormous amount of room for innovation," Foertsch said at the time. | AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX is up to 32% slower than the Intel i9-12900H in Geekbench Posted: 25 Jan 2022 07:09 AM PST First announced at the company's Produce Premiere event earlier this month, AMD's Ryzen 6000 Series mobile processors should make their way into the best gaming laptops in the coming weeks. Team red claims its new CPUs are 1.3x faster on average compared to its older Ryzen 5000 Series chips, and a new Geekbench benchmark appears to validate this. However, it also seems that AMD's new Ryzen 6000 chips may not be quite as performant as Intel's Alder Lake platform. The latest entry for the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX on Geekbench database (via BenchLeaks) puts the single-core and multi-core score of the processor at 1,616 and 9,939, respectively. This makes the CPU around 14-30% faster than its predecessor, the Ryzen 9 5900HX, and fits will within team red's claimed 1.3x performance increase. While the 6900HX will undoubtedly be among the best gaming CPUs you can find in a 2022 laptop, it appears to be slower than its main rival, the Intel Core i9-12900H. For instance, the 12900H is capable of scoring as high as 1,962 in single-core and 14,542 multi-core, making it AMD's chip 18-32% slower by comparison. | FFXIV 6.08 patch brings huge buffs for Paladin, Dancer, and Dragoon Posted: 25 Jan 2022 03:43 AM PST Final Fantasy XIV's latest patch is here, and it's good news for those of you who play the Paladin, Dancer, and Dragon jobs, in particular. Alongside a raft of damage buffs for other classes, we've also got a new data centre for the Oceanic region. The Paladin has got a handsome increase in potency across its Spirits Within, Expiacion, Blade of Faith, Blade of Truth, and Blade of Valour moves. The standouts, though, are the last three moves, which have all seen a leap of more than 100 in potencies. The Dragoon and Dancer have done pretty well for themselves, too. The former has got potency buffs to Raiden Thrust, Stardiver, Heavens' Thrust, and Chaotic Spring. Dragon Sight also has more range now, and the targeted party member now doesn't need to remain within 12 yalms to receive the benefits of Left Eye. The latter, meanwhile, has received damage boosts across Cascade, Reverse Cascade, and Fountainfall. The combo potency for Fountain has also been buffed to 280 from 240. To round things off, the four steps potency for Technical Finish has been boosted to 1,200 from 1,080. RELATED LINKS: The best MMOs on PC, FFXIV Reaper job guide, FFXIV Sage job guide |
| League of Legends patch 12.3 notes – big Ahri abilities rework Posted: 25 Jan 2022 06:19 AM PST As we head further into the new year, the League of Legends patches keep on coming. League of Legends patch 12.2 has headed to live servers, bringing new champion Zeri, the Spark of Zaun, and a whole lot of new skins. It seems 12.3 will be a somewhat humbler affair, but there are still some key changes fans will want to know - so, read on if you're keen to know what's next. It appears that League of Legends patch 12.3 won't be bringing new skins - given that these tend to hit the PBE first thing in a new testing cycle, and there doesn't seem to be any as yet - but we do have some big Ahri balance changes coming up. Principal character designer August 'Riot August' Browning has posted some details around this on Twitter. Goals for the refresh include "lean[ing] into her mobile mage identity by allowing R to partially reset, giving her more opportunities to carry fights" and reworking her passive ability to "be more useful throughout the game". Additionally, the devs want to "make her spells feel better to cast in lane". You can check out all the changed abilities in the notes below. | League of Legends’ Chemtech Drake has been disabled for being “too frustrating” Posted: 24 Jan 2022 02:36 PM PST The Chemtech Drake in League of Legends is being disabled after a rocky debut in the latest preseason. Riot says player feedback has indicated that the new dragon type has been "too frustrating to play with." The developer says it's removing the drake from the game, along with its associated soul and terrain - and it might be some time before we see it again. "When we introduced the Chemtech Drake, Soul, and Terrain in preseason, we shared our intent for it to have a higher impact on games than the original four elemental drakes," the Summoner's Rift team says in a new blog post. "Over the past few months, we've heard your feedback across social media and surveys that, even with this goal in mind, the Chemtech addition has just been too frustrating to play with - especially if you're on the losing team." Riot says it's going to be iterating on the designs of the current drake versions to solve some of the issues they've been facing, taking a particularly hard look at their terrain. "This may take time to do right, meaning there's a chance we won't bring the Chemtech Drake back for a while," the team says. | Steam Deck’s dynamic cloud sync lets you jump to PC without shutting games down Posted: 24 Jan 2022 01:38 PM PST Valve's gearing up for the official launch of its Steam Deck handheld, and it's added a new feature to Steam that's going to make it easier to move back and forth between the Steam Deck and your PC. Dynamic cloud sync will upload any save data to Steam's cloud when you suspend a game on the Steam Deck, which means you won't have to fully exit a game before you can pick back up on your PC. "We anticipate that users will frequently suspend their Steam Deck without exiting the game, as is common with other hand-held gaming devices," Valve explains in a new post about dynamic cloud sync. When this feature is enabled, "Steam will automatically upload all modified save game data to the cloud prior to the device entering sleep mode." When you want to move back to the Steam Deck, Steam will then automatically download any new save data when you wake the device back up. If you don't enable dynamic cloud sync, you'll be prompted to shut down the software on the Steam Deck if you try to open the game on another device. | Cities: Skylines gets a free update alongside the Airports DLC Posted: 24 Jan 2022 12:23 PM PST The arrival of Cities: Skylines' Airports DLC coincides with a nice update to the city builder's core game. The free update adds some AI tweaks and new customisation options that'll be welcome for all Cities: Skylines players, whether they've purchased the new DLC or not. First up, airplane AI across the board has been updated, improving airplane behaviour in the base game. You should no longer see planes endlessly circling above your city, and they'll carry more passengers per trip. This applies to any mass transit vehicle that arrives from outside your city: you'll see less frequent trips, but with more passengers per trip. Everyone will also see some new options for customisation. You'll be able to swap out the trees that line roads for the first time, simply by selecting a tree in the landscaping menu, and then clicking the segment of tree-lined road where you want to use that tree rather than the default. This way, you'll be able to change out the little maple trees with tall palms. Changing trees is always free, since the cost of trees is factored into the cost of the roads where they appear. | Sea of Thieves devs tease “the biggest year yet” in the 2022 roadmap announcement Posted: 24 Jan 2022 10:05 AM PST Sea of Thieves is going to continue getting major updates in 2022, and developer Rare is confident this is going to be the game's "biggest year yet". The devs have announced a preview event for the 2022 roadmap coming later this week, and while that will likely be the venue for the major announcement on this year's content, the teaser trailer already provides a few clues on what to expect. The Sea of Thieves 2022 Preview Event takes place on Thursday, January 27 at 10am PST / 1pm EST / 6pm GMT via the developer's official YouTube channel. There's no indication of what format the broadcast will take, but it will provide a look at "the adventures, mysteries, and more that await you in the year ahead." Beyond saying that "2022 is set to be the biggest year yet for Sea of Thieves", today's teaser video doesn't offer much concrete info, but it does provide some tantalising glimpses of a new stone fort and what appears to be the silhouette of Belle, a character who has appeared for years in Sea of Thieves marketing material, but never in the game itself.
