| Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s plot twist is genius Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:32 AM PST Final Fantasy VII fans were expecting the 2020 Remake to be a faithful retelling of the original story. Square Enix had other plans: the final few chapters of Final Fantasy VII Remake wildly diverge from the original's ending, introducing far-reaching consequences for the lore and inciting plenty of outrage from some players as a result. 'It's a cop-out', they complain; 'just a cheap way to extend the narrative'. They're wrong. The new ending is utterly inspired, a perfect reimagining of a historic title. Before we dig through all the details, we should flag that there are some major plot spoilers for both FF7 and its remake ahead - you've been warned. And in case you're still on the fence about picking this up, you can read our Final Fantasy 7 Remake review here. The plot of Final Fantasy VII Remake mostly follows that of the original anime game until the team escapes from Shinra headquarters. But along the way, there are inklings that something is different this time around, there are forces at work that we've never seen before: the Whispers of fate. |
| GTA 5 car cheats – PC console commands for GTA V Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:19 AM PST Are you looking for GTA 5 car cheats? Be honest, if you could spawn any type of vehicle right at your feet, you'd have a sports car on every corner in GTA. Sure, you could steal a car from a random pedestrian, but where's the fun in that? Only the most expensive vehicles are worth your time, and if you use GTA 5 car cheats, you never have to drive a cheap car ever again. The beauty of playing GTA 5 on PC is that you have three options for entering car cheats: the cheat console menu, your in-game mobile phone, and using old school cheat inputs with a controller. The easiest method depends on what input device you're using - even if you're using a pad, it might be faster to keep a keyboard nearby as the PC cheats are easier to remember. Entering GTA 5 cheats disables achievements, so we highly recommend making a backup of your save before proceeding. Here's every GTA 5 car cheat to instantly spawn cars, motorbikes, and much more. | Epic’s next free game is a platformer from Donkey Kong Country vets Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:14 AM PST It's Thursday, and you know what that means – another round of free PC games from the Epic Games Store. This week, you can grab the post-apocalyptic action game Daemon x Machina, and as ever, Epic has revealed next week's freebie, too, which isn't to be missed if you like platform games or Donkey Kong Country. You'll be able to grab Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair from the usual Epic Games Store promotion page on Thursday, February 3 at 8am PST / 11am EST / 4pm GMT. It'll be there for one full week, at which point it'll be replaced by another freebie. As always, you'll 'purchase' the game at a price of zero dollars, and it'll remain in your library just like any game you might pay money for. It's been available once before, so this is a good chance to pick it up if you missed out last time. Here's the Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair blurb from the Epic Store: "Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a platform adventure from some of the key creative talent behind 'Donkey Kong Country'. With their arch-nemesis Capital B up to no good the buddy duo needs to spring into action once again to save the day!" |
| New Apex Legends: Defiance trailer shows off a wrecked Olympus Posted: 27 Jan 2022 08:04 AM PST Apex Legends' Olympus map is going to look pretty different next season. Following some teases, Respawn Entertainment has now shown off a new trailer that puts Olympus's newly wrecked state front and centre. The trailer starts with Mad Maggie being thrown from a dropship into the map for a typical battle royale game. After fleeing from one team, she soon stumbles across a mysterious figure below the surface, who you may recognise from Maggie's reveal trailer. The man soon initiates a sequence on a terminal before sending the new tooth-spitting fighter back to the surface of Olympus. Things start to go wrong as the floating map then teleports to a new location before it begins to plummet from the sky. The floating mass of land soon stabilises to avoid smacking the floor below, though it's not enough to stop everything from being tossed about the place. The trailer also all but confirms that the mysterious man is Octane's father, Eduardo Silva - the CEO of a pharmaceutical company. Maggie manages to swipe the mysterious man's glasses before meeting with Octane later, who asks "papa?" when noticing the green spectacles. | Oculus Quest becomes Meta Quest in inevitable rebrand Posted: 27 Jan 2022 07:43 AM PST It's official – the Oculus Quest is now called the Meta Quest, and fans of the VR headsets aren't pleased. The brand's retirement was announced using a metaverse themed two buttons meme on Twitter, alongside the caption "New Name. Same Mission." Meta acquired Oculus for $2 billion USD in 2014, following the success of the original Oculus Rift headset. Since then, the company has used the brand to establish itself within the VR space and establish a foundation for its metaverse ambitions. While the Oculus Quest 2 is primarily designed with VR gaming in mind, upcoming products like Project Cambria aim to offer a high-end mixed reality experience. The social media giant also intends to release an Oculus Quest 3, but its recent announcement means it'll likely be called the Meta Quest instead. It's worth noting that the company hasn't announced official names for its next-gen VR headsets, so we'll need to wait and see whether Meta's new moniker belongs to one device or its entire lineup of metaverse accessories. | Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:41 AM PST Looking for a list of the best Valorant guns and how to use them? We've spent countless hours playing Riot's tactical FPS game, and we've got some solid Valorant weapon recommendations to pass on. Keep in mind that the best Valorant weapon always depends on your current situation - use this list as a guideline to help inform your buying decisions. All aboard the Valorant hype train. Riot Games has taken a fresh approach to its multiplayer first-person shooter by leaning heavily into its competitive credentials. So it makes sense that the studio bases so much of their game - especially the weapon behaviour - off two of the best competitive shooters around: CS:GO and its predecessor Counter-Strike. It's clear that many of the weapons in Valorant have a CS equivalent, but there are some key differences to all of them, and if you've never played a CS-style shooter then there's a good chance they'll all feel alien to you. Either way, we've put them all to the test in order to bring you a tier list of Valorant guns, as well as some tips for handling each one so you can master your favourites. | Minecraft enchantments guide: how to use your enchanting table Posted: 27 Jan 2022 04:09 AM PST Minecraft enchantments can be crafted using an enchanting table and are how you create magic armour, weapons, and tools in Minecraft. There is a significant gamble associated with enchantments in Minecraft, as there's no way of knowing what the enchanting table will spit out when you're done. You could end up wasting a perfectly good diamond sword, or you could imbue it with the Fire Aspect enchantment so that it also deals burn damage with each strike. As you can probably tell, Minecraft enchantments are very powerful, and you'll want to rack up as many as possible to stand the best chance of surviving in this cruel, blocky world. To offset their extraordinary power, getting to the stage where you can build and use a Minecraft enchanting is no mean feat, and there are a lot of steps involved in creating a weapon with a decent enchantment. Join us as we break down the basics on building a Minecraft enchanting table, using enchantments, and offering some additional tips on this advanced crafting mechanic. | You can now play Doom on a portable pinky-sized gaming PC Posted: 27 Jan 2022 03:58 AM PST Transforming everyday appliances into Doom gaming machines is something of a sport. We've already witnessed the FPS game running on everything from a digital camera display to a restaurant order system, and it even runs on holographic displays. Thanks to developers over at Adafruit, the id Software classic is now playable on a gaming PC that's smaller than a credit card, providing you're not prone to hand cramps. The Adafruit QT Py Doom playing device (codename PINKY) uses a ESP32 Pico v3 02 SoC at its core, complete with a dual Tensilica 240MHz CPU and 2MB PSRAM. The device meets the classic shooter's system requirements by also wielding a 1.3 inch TFT display, and a bunch of tiny micro switches to boot. The device uses Retro-Go port of Prboom, an overhauled version of the original Doom engine. While getting the game onto unconventional appliances usually requires some tinkering, Adafruit says the DOS shooter "pretty much just worked" after simply loading the shareware DOOM1.WAD file from an SD card. | Windows 11’s TPM requirement is causing stuttering issues with AMD Ryzen CPUs Posted: 27 Jan 2022 03:56 AM PST Windows 11 has been around for just under four months now, quickly becoming the second most popular version of Microsoft's operating system among gaming PCs. While it will undoubtedly eventually replace Windows 10, there's still plenty of troubleshooting to be done before then, especially when it comes to AMD Ryzen CPUs. A thread on the Linus Tech Tips forums contains multiple testimonies of users experiencing stuttering issues on their Windows 11 PCs, while running an AMD Ryzen processor. Worse still, these reports date back to July 2021. The problem appears to be related to the 'fTPM' BIOS setting (firmware Trusted Platform Module), which must be enabled in order for Windows 11 to be installed. However, users say that turning 'fTPM' not only resolves the issue, but also has no impact on the functionality of their OS. It's unclear what plans Microsoft has to address this issue, or how quickly a fix can be deployed, but the company was previously quick to address other issues relating to AMD Ryzen CPU performance on Windows 11. | The best Genshin Impact Yae Miko build and team comp Posted: 27 Jan 2022 03:46 AM PST Looking for the best Yae Miko build? The popular pink-haired priestess is arriving in an upcoming Genshin Impact banner - nothing has been officially announced yet but data from beta testers indicates she'll be playable as part of the Genshin Impact 2.5 update. Based on this beta information, Yae Miko looks like a powerful Electro DPS character, capable of dealing substantial damage. However, she requires a lot of energy for her burst so if you're planning to take on the most difficult content, we recommend running her as a sub-DPS alongside a good "battery" - a character who generates lots of energy for their team. To help you figure out how to play Yae Miko, we've put together a guide to the best Yae Miko build and team composition. Bear in mind, however, that this is all based on unreleased data and is subject to change when the Yae Miko release date arrives. If you're preparing to pull for her then we recommend checking our Yae Miko ascension materials guide so you can start stockpiling everything we think you'll need to get her levelled up. | GTA Online’s weekly update adds a new car from The Contract Posted: 27 Jan 2022 03:26 AM PST It's Thursday, friends, and that means it's reset day for GTA Online. Rockstar Games will have the full rundown on its newswire later on in the day, but the update is already live, so players are visiting Los Santos to see what's new and worth taking note of. This week, the big swanky addition is a new car from The Contract update known as the Declasse Granger 3600LX. You may recognise it from the recent slice of new content as it looks like a four-door, full-size SUV. You can buy it from Southern San Andreas Super Autos for $1,380,000 in-game currency (or $1,035,000 if you have something to trade in). If you're looking to make some money to put towards your new set of wheels, you can get triple the usual GTA$ and RP rewards on the Every Bullet Counts adversary mode and bike races. Weed and document forgery alongside MC work, meanwhile, are paying out double rewards. Weed farms and document forgery offices are also 50% off this week so it's an ideal time to nab one of those if you haven't already - and, no, I can't believe I wrote that sentence either. | League of Legends update nerfs Zeri Runann’s Hurricane interaction Posted: 27 Jan 2022 02:58 AM PST Riot Games has rolled out a small follow-up update to League of Legends patch 12.2 to make some balance changes to the MOBA game's newest champion. Zeri, the Spark of Zaun, joined the live game last week with the arrival of the patch, but it seems her interactions with a key item have proved a bit too powerful so far, so the studio's nipped the issue in the bud. "We just micro-patched out a nerf for Zeri's hurricane interaction," principal character designer August 'RiotAugust' Browning says on Twitter. "It was looking very strong." This relates to the champ's interaction with the legendary item Runaan's Hurricane, which it seems was adding a significant boost to Zeri's prowess on the Rift due to the way it worked alongside her ultimate, Lightning Crash. "R chain lightning is no longer an on-hit effect (which means hurricane bolts no longer apply it)", the dev explains. So, it appears her ultimate's lightning attacks were capable of dealing some big damage to multiple foes by acting as on-hit effects when paired with the item in certain builds, which was giving Zeri just a little too much of an edge. | Minecraft shields: everything you need to know Posted: 27 Jan 2022 02:59 AM PST Want to learn how to create and customise your Minecraft shields? Shields are a state of the art defensive tool to aid in pixelated combat, used instead of blocking with swords. Minecraft shields are not upgradable, so it's one size fits all, but they can be customised using a Minecraft banner. Minecraft shields will completely negate all front-facing attacks of up to four damage, with the shield taking damage equal to the strength of the attack if the incoming attack exceeds that value. Minecraft shields can be used to deflect some incoming attacks, including arrows that will ricochet and deal damage back at the enemy who fired it, and melee combat which will knock an enemy backwards. All non-damage effects through a ranged attack, such as being set on fire or poisoned by an arrow, are prevented when blocking with the shield. Knockback from melee attacks or projectiles is negated, except explosions, which are reduced to one block or less. Find out how to create, customise, and enchant your shield in Minecraft with these handy tips. RELATED LINKS: Minecraft console commands, Minecraft skins, Minecraft mods |

| WW2 game Post Scriptum has a new map that recreates the Battle of Crete Posted: 26 Jan 2022 02:49 PM PST WW2 game Post Scriptum has a brand new map set in one of the lesser-known battlefields of the war: the island of Crete, which was the site of a heated showdown between Allied and Axis forces in May and June of 1941. The new map, Maleme, is the first Post Scriptum map created independently by a third-party studio, Mercury Arts. The map recreates the Battle of Crete, which was the first massed used of German Fallschirmjäger paratroopers. Defending the island is New Zealand's 2nd NZ Division, who are attempting to keep the Germans from capturing the key airfield on Crete. Should the airfield fall to the Germans, they'll be easily reinforce the invaders, and the Allies will have to retreat from the island. Maleme features the hot, sandy island terrain of the Mediterranean, and it'll be joined by additional maps as part of Mercury Arts' independently produced 'Chapter Mercury' addition to Post Scriptum. In the post announcing the launch of the chapter, the studio says it's working on adding the Greek 5th Cretan Division, the Australian 16th Infantry Brigade, and the Italian 50th Infantry Division in future updates. |

| Genshin Impact Yae materials: all ascension materials Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:23 AM PST Looking for Yae Miko's ascension materials? According to rumours about the Genshin Impact 2.5 update, Yae Miko, the elegant Guuji of the Grand Narukami Shrine, is going to be one of the new Genshin Impact characters on an upcoming Genshin Impact banner. Although she's still in development and her skills are constantly being tweaked on the 2.5 beta server, players have uncovered plenty of early information about the pink-haired kitsune maiden. This includes her abilities, constellations, and passives ahead of the Yae Miko banner release date. As a result, we have a list of the required ascension materials for Yae Miko, which you'll need in order to unlock additional abilities. We've put together a list of all the Yae materials for ascension, and how to obtain them. | PlanetSide 2 just got a new continent to explore for the first time in 8 years Posted: 26 Jan 2022 10:11 AM PST There's a huge update out now for the free-to-play sci-fi multiplayer game PlanetSide 2, and it adds the first new continent the game has seen in almost eight years. As the name suggests, the Isles of Oshur are a dense archipelago of islands ripe for the taking, and there are some all-new game mechanics to take into account while before you join the battle there. Developer Rogue Planet Games says there's "something for everyone" on Oshur, which features not only countless sandy beaches, but also jungles and savannahs ripe for vehicular combat. It's dotted by towering Trident relays, which can only be entered up top - meaning you'll need to make sure you've got air support along with you. The Isles of Oshur don't have the traditional warpgates you typically find on PlanetSide 2 maps, and your new headquarters is located on new Exodus-class fleet carriers out on the water. You're pretty safe while aboard: the carriers have particle projection cannons mounted on their decks that will shred any enemy vehicles that get close. |
| Steam Deck battery life could get a boost thanks to VRS enhancements by Valve Posted: 26 Jan 2022 10:15 AM PST One of the most important specs that defines the success of any portable gaming device is battery life, and the Steam Deck is no exception. Valve estimates that users can expect anywhere between 2-8 hours of playtime from its handheld gaming PC, but the company seems to be working on driver-level enhancements that could help push this even further. According to a recent merge request on GitLab, as spotted and very helpfully explained by Phoronix, it appears that Valve engineers are working on Vulkan Radeon driver improvements. More specifically, to better control how VRS (Variable Rate Shading) behaves at a driver level, in a bid to improve power savings. If you're unfamiliar with VRS, it enables the shading quality of particular parts of a frame to be rendered at varying quality levels. This is useful in all videogames, particularly racing games like Dirt 5. For example, it allows car models to retain the highest shading quality possible, while fast moving peripheral elements like the environment have a lower shading rate, thus freeing up performance and decreasing power consumption. | Rainbow Six Siege gets in-game memorial to caster Kixstar Posted: 26 Jan 2022 09:23 AM PST Ubisoft has added an in-game memorial to Rainbow Six Siege's Presidential Plane map to honour the memory of Michael 'Kixstar' Stockley. Now, when you're wandering around near the plane's bottom stairs, you might stumble across a plaque on a wall with the caster's name on it. The plaque was initially highlighted by Ubisoft esports director Wei Yue following a recent patch, though plenty of players flocked to the map in-game to check it out for themselves. The map holds some significance as it was the setting for one of the Siege caster's finer in-game moments. He got an eight-second ace to clutch the round for his team during one match. If you're not up on your Siege lingo, that means he wiped out the other team by himself. Stockley was initially a professional player himself, though he swiftly found success in casting, becoming a massive part of the game's esports scene. He, unfortunately, passed away in October of last year, which was confirmed in a message from his family that was shared on Twitter.
