Legendary Writer Roy Thomas Creating New Classic Era X-Men Tales

Posted: 21 Feb 2022 03:35 PM PST

X-MEN LEGENDS, the series where X-Men's most celebrated creators return with new, in-continuity stories set during their classic runs, is back this May with an all-new #1! Coming on board to launch this extraordinary new era of the series will be industry pioneer Roy Thomas. The writer behind some of the X-Men's most memorable Silver Age adventures will pen a new story set after his final issue and before GIANT-SIZE X-MEN. Teaming up with artist Dave Wachter, Thomas will revisit the early publication days of one his greatest co-creations–WOLVERINE!

Having redefined the merry mutants in two seminal runs on the book, Roy Thomas, at long last, returns to the saga of the X-Men! For the first time, readers will get new insight into Wolverine’s government missions before his recruitment by Professor X (including unrevealed details on his battle with the green goliath in the iconic HULK #181-#182). This untold episode will also star Beast and a host of missing mutants, and reveal the secret behind Wolverine’s costume!

"You could’ve knocked me over with one of the Angel’s wing-feathers when editor Mark Basso invited me to scribe a two-part X-MEN LEGENDS story set back in the general period of the X-MEN book during the period when I was originally writing it (as Stan’s successor) in the latter 1960s," Thomas said. "After some thought, it occurred to me that what would really be fun would be to write a story that took place right after the crashing of Wolverine into the Marvel Universe in '1974'–since, after conceiving the character in broad outline (and some specifics), I turned him over to the considerable writing skills of Len Wein, but have long kinda wished that I had scripted that story myself. This is the closest I’m gonna get–so I’m having a ball with it! (Artwork’s pretty great, too!)"

Face front, True Believers! Get ready for an all-new volume of X-MEN LEGENDS with legendary creators and stories covering the length and breadth of X-Men history from the early eras to fan-favorite latter day sagas!

Rapper 50 Cent Developing Christopher Priest’s DC Comic Xerø

Posted: 21 Feb 2022 01:15 PM PST

Deadline reports that Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's G-Unit Film & Television has optioned Christopher Priest's DC comic Xerø for development alongside Color Farm Media as a live-action film franchise.

In the upcoming films, based on Priest and ChrisCross's DC Comics series of the same name, an African American government assassin weaponizes invisibility by disguising himself as a white man, to blend anonymously into the exotic Casino Royale haunts of the international elite. Spanning the gulf between that and the disenfranchised city streets of East St. Louis, Illinois, Trane Walker is a man living in two worlds but taking ownership of neither. Xerø tells the story of his moral awakening and the life-and-death perils it presents.

G-Unit Film & Television will produce the upcoming adaptations alongside Erika Alexander and Ben Arnon for Color Farm, and Joseph Illidge, who serves as CEO of the newly-launched production and publishing company, Illuminous.

"There's no one better than Christopher Priest to bring G-Unit Film & Television into the world of comic book superheroes," said Jackson. "Watch as we build XERO into a franchise alongside Christopher and Color Farm Media, I can't wait for the world to meet Trane Walker in an all new way."

Nothing Sacred: FOX Developing ‘Bloom County’ Animated Series

Posted: 21 Feb 2022 10:35 AM PST

FOX is developing a beloved 1980s comic into a primetime animated series: A TV series version of Bloom County is officially in the works with its Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist creator Berkeley Breathed on board.

Fox is looking to bring to life Steve Dallas, Bill the Cat, Opus the Penguin and other characters from Breathed's strip, which originally ran from 1980 to 1989 and spawned several bestselling books. With a tone that was smart, whimsical and occasionally downright silly, Bloom County examined events in politics and culture from the viewpoint of an idyllic small town in Middle America.

The typically reclusive Breathed will co-write and executive produce the project, which is being produced by Fox Entertainment, Bento Box Entertainment, Miramax, Spyglass Media Group and Project X Entertainment.

The project's official description: "Bloom County centers on a collapsed lawyer, a lobotomized cat and a penguin in briefs and fruit headwear living in the world's last boarding house in the world's most forgotten place deep in the dandelion wilds of FlyWayWayOver country. To wit, today's America at a glance."

Tom Holland Films Take No. 1 & 3 Spots at Weekend Box Office

Posted: 21 Feb 2022 08:25 AM PST

In what some expert thought would be a down holiday weekend at the box office has turned out to be much stronger as Uncharted over-performs expectations over the 4-day weekend taking in $51 million to top the charts. This is quite the accomplishment for the Tom Holland / Mark Wahlberg lead video game adaptation that had been receiving less than stellar reviews from critics.

But audiences disagree with the critics, giving the film an 89% score compared to the 39% from the professionals. This is also the second Tom Holland film to lead the box office in as many months and Spider-Man: No Way Home is still performing well, taking in another $8.8 million which puts it at third place for the week. Sandwiched between the two films is the new Channing Tatum vehicle, Dog, which wagged its way to $18.05 million and second place.

Last week's leader, Death on the Nile dropped to fourth with $7.18 million and Jackass Forever rounds out the top five with $6.2 million.

Watch: Gag on this ‘Peacemaker ‘Blooper Reel from James Gunn

Posted: 21 Feb 2022 06:20 AM PST

James Gunn has dropped a 9-minute gag reel from his HBO Max series Peacemaker. And by “gag” reel, we aren’t referring to the ass kissing John Cena performed on China last year. They just wrapped season one and the series has been approved for a second season. Are you watching the series? That finale did feature a pretty surprising cameo.

You can watch the gag reel below or over on Gunn's Twitter account. And don’t worry, The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy director finally deleted all those sick pedophile jokes from his social media.

‘The Batman’ Will Mark the Return of U.S. Superhero Films to China

Posted: 21 Feb 2022 04:45 AM PST

Warner Bros.' The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson, has secured a theatrical release date in China on March 18, marking the return of Hollywood superhero movies to the country after an extended drought.

The Batman will be hitting China behind the U.S., where it opens March 4, after releasing in Taiwan and South Korea on March 2. Unlike other recent WarnerMedia tentpoles, however, The Batman won't be released simultaneously on streamer HBO Max, which will help prevent high-quality pirate copies from reaching China before the movie is in cinemas. WarnerMedia has promised to wait 45 days before putting the new Batman installment on its flagship streaming service.

The release date for the DC title breaks a prolonged streak of China passing on the releases of Hollywood superhero movies. China may be happy they missed The Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. But they also missed the last five Marvel blockbusters — Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home — which were all left on the shelf by Chinese regulators, leaving studio insiders to speculate about the reasons and significance of the snubs.

The last U.S. superhero movies that made it to the Chinese box office  were Wonder Woman 1984, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Bloodshot.  So now it’s making complete sense why the NBA is promoting the movie so heavily…

Fantastic Four on Deck; Feige Calls ‘Endgame’ the “Final Avengers Film”

Posted: 20 Feb 2022 03:25 PM PST

In the recently released Marvel Assembled which takes a look behind the scenes of Eternals as well as in the Featurettes on the Blu-Ray release, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige referred to Avengers: Endgame as being the final Avengers film. This has, of course, sent the Internet into a frenzy.

There has been a lot of speculation over the last few years that Marvel was building up to a new team that would included Shang-Chi and members of the Eternals even though there is no Avengers film on the Phase 4 schedule. Where an Avengers film would have been historically is now replaced with a team called the Fantastic Four. It is possible that there won't be another Avengers film, but I wouldn't bank on that yet.

If you look at the actual quote which is something like: "After the final Avengers film, we closed the book on the Infinity Saga and wanted to go in a new direction." It is very possible that he is referring to the final Avengers film in the Infinity Saga and not the final one altogether. Its open to a bit of interpretation. Plus, Feige is never one to say never. If in Phase 5 he decides to do Secret Wars or the Kree/Skrull war and slapping the word Avengers on the front makes sense, he will.

Maybe the internet can calm down a little. Nah…

Will HBO Max Be Taking Over The CW’s Arrowverse Shows?

Posted: 20 Feb 2022 12:35 PM PST

The landscape of television is changing on basically a constant basis, as the viewing habits of audiences consistently continue to evolve.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that one mainstay of linear network television, The CW, might be sold by WarnerMedia and Paramount Global, with Nextstar Media Group Inc. being “among the suitors” who might ultimately purchase it. Even as both of the current parent companies could remain minority owners and receive “commitments to be the primary program suppliers for the network,” some have wondered how this acquisition could affect The CW’s current crop of programming.

In a recent interview, HBO and HBO Max chief Casey Bloys was asked if some of The CW’s shows could potentially move to HBO Max if the situation required it. According to Bloys, there’s no way of knowing in the current situation, but the crop of CW shows that already stream past seasons on HBO Max are “very valuable.”

“We’ll see what happens,” Bloys explained. “I don’t know, in that sale, what they’re looking to do or not do but those shows do really well when they come to HBO Max in a window deal. They’re really well done and valuable shows to us. I’m not involved in the Nexstar or The CW negotiations or anything like that so I don’t really know but generally speaking, the shows that Greg does for The CW are very valuable and perform well on HBO Max.”

While a number of The CW’s recent shows are part of an existing secondary streaming deal with Netflix, the network’s originals have found their way to HBO Max since the 2019-2020 season. This means that fans can already stream past seasons of Batwoman, Nancy Drew, DC’s Stargirl, Superman & Lois, Walker, and Kung Fu on the service, with current freshman shows like Naomi and 4400 expected to follow suit.

According to CBR, each “irreverent and emotionally shocking” episode of Diabolical is a standalone short film animated in a different style, with “I’m Your Pusher” taking its visual cues directly from Robertson’s work on the original comic. Ennis wrote the episode, which is directed by Giancarlo Volpe.

FX Chief Promises Big Surprises, but No ‘Ripley’ in Aliens TV Series

Posted: 20 Feb 2022 07:40 AM PST

FX Chief John Landgraf provided an update at the network's TCA winter tour panel today on Noah Hawley's Alien series. "There are some big surprises in store for the audience," exclaimed the network boss. But when asked by Deadline, he said Sigourney Weaver's Ripley won't be starring.

"Alien takes place before Ripley. It's the first story that takes place in the Alien franchise on Earth," said Landgraf. "So, it takes place on our planet. Right near the end of this century we're in — so 70-odd years from now."

He added, "Ripley won't be a part of it or any of the other characters of Alien other than the alien itself."

Despite five scripts already being in for Alien, and Fargo only one, Hawley will shoot the latter series first as it needs to go into production this winter given its Midwest setting.
