I Lost My Cooking Appetite When Pregnant—Here's How I Got it Back Posted: 24 Feb 2022 07:00 AM PST Author Leanne Brown's Good Enough: A Cookbook celebrates human imperfection. Through personal essays about attainable recipes, Brown considers cooking through the lens of mental health and self-forgiveness. In this excerpt, Brown shares her experience with severe nausea during pregnancy—and therefore, loss of joy around food—as well as her postpartum journey with cooking, and how the larger experience helped her to press pause on her "inner perfectionist and just make something." From Our Shop Being a person is really hard. You are constantly confronted with what you want to do and the limited time and energy you have to do those things. You have to work to earn money to live; you have to work in your home and on your relationships and projects. You also need to rest and have fun or you grind yourself down and can't do any of those responsible things anymore. Being engaged as a person means constant work and constant growth. It is exhausting. I frequently feel overwhelmed by my responsibilities, and never more so than in recent years, when I was pregnant and during my daughter's first year of life.
We Still Can’t Stop Thinking About the Gold Wine Glasses on 'Love Is Blind' Posted: 24 Feb 2022 05:30 AM PST Well, we're here again: The finale of Love is Blind Season 2. Two years after the premiere of the first season on Netflix, we're waiting to see if a new crop of poorly matched and ill-fated couples will make it out of the self-proclaimed "experiment." And by "make it out," I of course mean get married just weeks after meeting their partner for the first time. It's a bonkers concept for a television show, and while this season has been altogether less captivating than the first, I'm still waiting with bated breath to see what will come of these hopeless (truly, hopeless) romantics. While of course I'm wondering what will become of the fat-phobic Shake (and his undeservedly lovely fiancée, Deepti), or the insufferable Shayne (and his red-flag-ignoring fiancée, Natalie), there's something else that's been on my mind… the golden goblets.
5 Less-Expensive Places to Get Custom Furniture Posted: 24 Feb 2022 05:30 AM PST Traditional custom furniture often brings to mind chicken-scratch doodles on the backs of napkins, rounds of approvals with designers, and the nail-biting wait until your one-of-a-kind creation gets delivered to your home. Oh, and the exorbitant prices. Having the perfect couch that fits your space or the just-right shade of sage comes at a cost, and made-to-order can certainly cost you. That's where custom direct-to-consumer furniture brands like Interior Define, Burrow, and even Anthropologie come in. They're the more streamlined and comparatively less expensive cousin to the traditional stuff, but with the same quality, uniqueness, and in some cases, even more customizations.
Posted: 23 Feb 2022 01:30 PM PST A well-made chocolate egg cream is hard to find. The beverage was invented by Louis Auster in the 1890s, and remained popular throughout the early 20th century. Famously containing neither eggs nor cream, the sweet treat was once poured freely by soda jerks in candy stores throughout Bay Ridge, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, and the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City. Recently, it's been popping up on menus as a relic of the past or a novelty; but, if you order it, odds are you will be disappointed with the taste. Not many people know how to make it well anymore—egg creams often come out too chocolatey, too watery, too thin-tasting. So what's the secret to mixing an egg cream that rivals an old fashioned soda shoppe (because of course it has to be spelled with two p's and an e on the end) without the use of a time machine? Before we get into how to make egg cream at home, here's a quick primer on egg creams.
12 Under-the-Radar Trader Joe’s Products You Need to Try Immediately Posted: 23 Feb 2022 02:07 PM PST Shopping at Trader Joe's can feel less like a necessity and more like a never-ending hunt to find your new favorite product. There are hundreds of items to choose from, making it easy to overlook some real gems that haven't received the same fanfare as a block of Unexpected Cheddar or Everything But the Bagel Seasoning. But consider us Trader Joe's investigators because we've uncovered 12 sleeper hits that are more than deserving of a spot in your future cart or basket. Check out our list below, which we're almost reluctant to share because we selfishly prefer that these remain in stock and don't develop cult followings.
How to Scrub Away Rust From Cast Iron Posted: 23 Feb 2022 01:24 PM PST I love cooking with cast-iron. It makes the skin of my salmon or potatoes crispy as heck and is so easy to clean—aka it basically requires no cleaning at all. A rinse of the pan with warm water and a splash of soap, a thorough wipe-down with a paper towel or dish towel and a bit of oil, you're good to go. It's the ultimate lazy person's cookware. But said laziness can come with some unfortunate side effects, such as a rusty cast iron skillet. From Our Shop It's happened to me time and time again. A little splotch on the underside of the skillet, a small mark around the perimeter, but nothing to worry about, right? Brush it aside (mentally, that is) and continue to sear, sauté, and bake away. But it can't be good to let the rust fester, right? Let's see what my good friends at the USDA have to say: "Rust is not a food safe material so it should not be ingested. If you see rust on the surface of a utensil such as a cast-iron skillet or knife, remove all the rust before using it." Fair enough.
18 Essential Oils To De-Stress, Restore, and More Posted: 23 Feb 2022 12:37 PM PST Self-care looks different for everyone. For me, it includes engaging in daily movement, reading as many books as possible, and indulging in some serious couch time. For others like CEO of luxury pet fashion house Pagerie and self-care expert Mandy Madden Kelley, essential oils are key to holistic well-being. "I'm a big believer in nurturing your body in as many ways as you can, which is why I fell in love with aromatherapy," she says. "When I discovered essential oils, I was invested in finding the best ones to enhance my moods, and relax my body and mind." Mandy isn't alone in her quest for the best essential oils for every situation, which is why we chatted with nine experts about their favorite oils and blends that help de-stress, boost energy, encourage a restful sleep, and more. Read on for their tried-and-true picks.
How to Hard-Boil Eggs to Dye for Easter Posted: 23 Feb 2022 10:00 AM PST Every year on the Saturday before Easter, my family gathers around our kitchen table and dyes eggs together. We fill my parents' set of Corelle Shadow Iris mugs with hot water, a splash of white vinegar, and a few drops of every shade of dye in our box of McCormick food coloring. We grab spoons and toothpicks, rubber bands and Q-Tips, and begin to discuss décor ideas: pink ombré, a warm sunrise, stripes and polka dots, or a cross crafted out of the aforementioned rubber bands. But before dyeing said Easter eggs, my dad spends part of the morning carefully cooking eggs for our favorite holiday craft. Turns out, there's no real difference between cooking perfect hard-boiled eggs for a quick breakfast or eggs for Easter. If anything, it's slightly easier to boil eggs for coloring because you don't need to worry about any "easy-peel methods"—such as adding baking soda to the boiling water or letting the eggs cool off in an ice bath for five minutes post-cook, pre-peel. Here's how you do it.
Jenn de la Vega Has 4 Separate Pantries (at Least) Posted: 23 Feb 2022 09:00 AM PST Welcome to Jenn de la Vega's pantry! In each installment of this series, a recipe developer will share with us the pantry items essential to their cooking. This month, we're exploring seven staples stocking Jenn's kitchen, which includes Japanese, West Indian, American Southern, and Filipinx ingredients. I struggle defining the cuisine that I cook. When confronted, I'll stammer about being a Filipina from California, and living now in Brooklyn, New York. If you ask what I do, the answer depends on the time of year. From January to June, I'm a recipe developer and cookbook recipe tester. Between August and December, I'm mostly a wedding caterer. I say "mostly" because there might be craft services for an indie flick, food styling for a magazine, or a nonprofit fundraiser dinner. On Tuesdays, I curate the hot dogs at a local bar called Wonderville. We look to video games to inspire the names. My current favorite is called "Pancit! At the Disco Elysium," an all-beef hot dog with vegan stir-fried noodles and crunchy lumpia chips on top. As a result of all these different jobs, I don't have just one pantry; I have four.
Does Butter Need to Be Refrigerated? Well, It Depends. Posted: 23 Feb 2022 08:00 AM PST Do you store butter in the fridge, freezer, or at room temperature? When I floated this to home cooks on social media, the most common answer wasn't, actually, any of the above. It was all of the above.
