Elden Ring has already got the PS1 demake treatment

Elden Ring has already got the PS1 demake treatment

One of my favourite visual trends online is gaming demakes. Not only is it cool to see what a triple-A game of today would look like if it came out in the '90s, but it's also pretty dang nostalgic. A little-known game called Elden Ring has just been released to a rapturous reception, so it only makes sense that someone has given it the demake treatment.

YouTuber Hoolopee has recreated Elden Ring's trailer in the style of a Playstation 1 game. Things start with a low-poly Malenia the Severed attaching her arm before we see a blacksmith working in the dark and a warrior approaching the edge of a cliff. The dramatic tone of the trailer is caught perfectly, which is helped with some voiceover work that's evocative of the original reveal trailer.

While we see plenty of fantastic shots throughout the trailer, few are more critical than Pot Lad. The wait for Hidetaka Miyazaki's latest game has been a long one for fans, though the sentient pot showed up in a trailer, and everyone immediately took him into their hearts. He's actually called Alexander, but we like Pot Lad better.

Truck Simulator heads to Steam Deck with cross-platform support

Truck Simulator heads to Steam Deck with cross-platform support

With the Steam Deck release date rapidly approaching, we're hearing more and more about what we'll get to play on Valve's handheld when it arrives. Now, the folks at SCS Software have given us an idea of what's in store for American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2 in the way of 'Deck support - and the good news is you'll be able to dive in with your pals on other platforms.

"In addition to making some tweaks necessary to support this handheld gaming PC, our games will include several special bindings, along with a basic version of touchscreen support (clicking on the screen to select menu buttons)," the devs explain. "Moreover, we'd like to point out that by choosing to play on Steam Deck you will not be left behind when you will want to drive along with your friend in the Convoy mode, as 'cross-platform' gameplay will be supported."

Convoy mode was introduced last year, and lets truckers create private online games for up to eight players, with synchronised AI traffic, time, weather, and truck customisation options. Oh, it also features a push-to-talk CB radio option so you can natter with your fellow truckers if the lonesome approach isn't for you. Exciting news then that the Steam Deck port will offer the chance to dip into Convoy with PC pals.

Elden Ring has mixed Steam reviews citing performance issues

Elden Ring has mixed Steam reviews citing performance issues

FromSoftware's latest RPG has received high review scores across the board, but Elden Ring's performance issues on PC have earned it a mixed verdict on Steam. Most of the game's launch day gripes are themed around frame rate drops and stuttering, something some users suspect is caused by the inclusion of Easy Anti-Cheat.

While the best graphics cards should be up to the task, GPUs like the GeForce RTX 3080 are apparently struggling to maintain 60fps in Elden Ring. According to some Steam user reviews, Nvidia's high-end GPUs struggle at 1080p, with stuttering also proving to be an issue. Elden Ring's frame rate is locked at 60fps, so you can only boost fps to match the cap.

Over on Reddit, users are also grumbling about FromSoftware's PC port, citing similar performance problems. Again, Easy Anti-Cheat seems to be highlighted as a primary cause, with players reporting that disabling the software can help alleviate the issues. Of course, doing this means you'll need to play offline, as engaging in multiplayer without anti-cheat on could earn you an online ban.

Vampire Survivors might get a new character and weapon next week

Vampire Survivors might get a new character and weapon next week

Vampire Survivors is in for some superb additions next week. Developer Poncle has shared its plans for patch 0.3.0, though some goodies are still in the works, so they might not make it into the update.

The run-based roguelite game could be getting a new character, weapon, and weapon evolution, though the developer is still working on them, so they might not make the patch. Further details aren't available just yet, so sit tight. Poncle reckons that patch 0.3.0 will release on March 1 or 2, so you won't have too long to wait and see regardless.

What we do know, though, is that we're getting three new achievements to unlock: a new stage that includes fresh enemies and events, a hyper mode for the stage, and one new game mechanic to keep things fresh. Antonio is also getting an armour and health bonus, Gennaro and Sour Clerici are getting a health boost, and Krochi will be swifter. Alongside some minor optimisations, we're also getting tentative fixes to stop the game freezing on startup after using localisation mods or on character selection after save data corruption.

Elden Ring multiplayer – how to play co-op

Elden Ring multiplayer – how to play co-op

Want to know how to play multiplayer in Elden Ring? All of the Dark Souls games are notorious for their unorthodox ways to access multiplayer and Elden Ring seems to follow this trend. In some ways, it's easier to hook up with friends now than ever before, but doing so still requires jumping through many hurdles, namely setting passwords and finding unique items in specific places in the massive open-world game.

These items do allow you to summon friends to help you beat the Elden Ring bosses, yes, but if you are up for the challenge you can also participate in PvP duels or invade another player's game to impede on their progress. We do recommend that you gear up with a build that's designed for PvP, equipping the most powerful Elden Ring Ashes of War you can find.

Each player in Elden Ring's multiplayer has different roles, so we will outline what rewards players get for completing their role's objectives and the locations of the items they need to play both co-op and PvP. We'll also discuss how to disable online mode or set up private games.

Genshin Impact codes: February 2022

Looking for Genshin Impact codes? MiHoYo's charming open-world game is notoriously addictive, and if you're anything like us, you're constantly on the lookout for more Genshin Impact primogems and other goodies.

Gathering currency in Genshin Impact can be quite the grind - while you can earn mora and primogems by completing quests such as daily commissions, an injection of extra funds will always be gratefully received. Fortunately, the developers MiHoYo occasionally send out free gifts in the form of Genshin Impact codes that can be redeemed online.

These Genshin Impact codes are released periodically. They frequently appear in MiHoYo's special programs that reveal information about future updates coming to the game soon, but are also released to celebrate milestones or to coincide with Genshin Impact events. Most codes also only work for a limited time - so it's a good idea to redeem them as soon as possible in case you miss out. Codes can only be redeemed once per account. Here are all the current Genshin Impact codes for February 2022, and how to redeem them.

League of Legends patch 12.5 notes – Bees! champion skins, Master Yi changes

The updates keep on coming, LoL fans. League of Legends patch 12.4 has made its way to the live Rift, bringing a raft of new skins, champion balance changes, and - of course - steely new Champon Renata Glasc. That means it's now time to see what's headed our way with its follow-up update. While the latest round of skins gave Kassadin, Shen, and Qiyana some dazzling new Shockblade styles, this fortnight's offerings are fare more whimsical. Let's take a look.

The new skins coming with League of Legends patch 12.5 add more champions to the game's Bees! alternate universe, with four new looks on the way. As you'd expect, the names are pun-tastic, with Heimerstinger, Nunu and Beelump, Orbeeanna, and BZZZiggs joining the skin line. You can check out the in-game clips of these in action and their splash art in the skins section below.

As for balance changes, this cycle we're not seeing too many champions getting a round of buffs or nerfs, though if you're a Seraphine or Master Yi main, you'll want to check out the updates below as they're both receiving a few key tweaks each.

Elden Ring system requirements

Elden Ring system requirements

The next Soulsborne game is finally here, but before you dive into the mind of director Hidetaka Miyazaki once again, you need to know if your rig can handle the Elden Ring system requirements. The bad news is that it might tax lower-end or aging systems by asking for 12GB of RAM. The good news is that it isn't quite as demanding on graphics cards.

Elden Ring will support a maximum resolution of native 4K, HDR, and frame rates of up to 60fps. Unfortunately, it appears that FromSoftware has implemented a frame rate cap, as it did previously with its previous game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. It's likely that this will be circumvented through mods, if previous games from the developer are anything to go by.

While it won't be available at launch, ray tracing support should add another layer of gross incandescence to Elden Ring's world. Currently, there's no indication that AMD FSR or Nvidia DLSS will be available to help boost fps, but we'll update this page if and when that changes.

The best Elden Ring classes – which class to pick

Want to know which is the best starting class in Elden Ring? At the very beginning of your adventure in this highly anticipated open-world game, you get the chance to choose your character's class, known in-game as their 'origin'. This choice determines your starting level and attributes, as well as the gear you start the game with.

Some classes suit different playstyles, and choosing based on that is one option, but there are classes on offer that are simply better for newer players than others. A large part of this is due to each class's equipment, which can give you powerful spells and Elden Ring ashes of war, but there are also the starting attributes to consider.

So if you want to know more about the Elden Ring classes and which one is the best for you, we have a list of all of the starting attributes and items you get. We will also give you a list of all of the keepsakes you can choose from afterwards and why some are better for beginners than others.

Elden Ring beginner’s guide – how to play

Want to know how to play Elden Ring? The ambitious and long-awaited new Soulslike game is nearly here. Elden Ring marks a departure from the well-trodden Dark Souls series, but keeps the taxing difficulty that players expect. We've seen plenty of glowing praise for the latest FromSoftware game, including in our Elden Ring review.

As the long wait for the Elden Ring release date draws to a close, it's time to get up to speed and learn about all of the new mechanics. Of course, there are things that take a little more explaining, such as the Elden Ring map fragments and how to play Elden Ring multiplayer, however, the helpful tips below should at least help you beat even the hardest of Elden Ring bosses.

Before we begin, one way you can save yourself a massive headache is to have a notepad to hand from the very start of the game. Elden Ring won't hold your hand when it comes to keeping track of side quests or if there's an item that you can use at a specific place to uncover valuable items or powerful weapons. With that said, here are our top Elden Ring tips:

Elden Ring map fragment locations

Elden Ring map fragment locations

Want to know where you can find Elden Ring map fragments? As you explore the vast regions of The Lands Between in this open-world game, the places you've visited are gradually revealed on your in-game map. This allows you to easily navigate back to a safe location or return to a dungeon to slay monsters that you weren't quite up to fighting when you first found them. There is, however, a faster way to open up an entire area.

In specific locations in every region, you can find map fragments that fill in the blanks, showing you all of the named locations and Elden Ring dungeons in the local area. Knowing where everything is in the region is particularly handy in your search for valuable items such as Elden Ring Ashes of War or Elden Ring cookbooks. You can also use your newfound knowledge to hunt down all of the optional Elden Ring bosses.

Since these key items are so valuable for exploring each area in The Lands Between, we have a list of all of the known Elden Ring map fragment locations so that you can scoop them up as soon as possible.

How to unlock the horse in Elden Ring

Posted: 25 Feb 2022 12:48 AM PST

How to unlock the horse in Elden Ring

Are you trying to unlock the horse in Elden Ring? Unlike Dark Souls 3 which features a linear game world, FromSoftware has decided to mix things up with Elden Ring by introducing a large open world to explore. It's difficult to move around while wearing leather armour at the best of times - thankfully, Elden Ring players have access to a spectral steed, a special horse named Torrent that can be called upon whenever you need it.

You don't need to use the horse to complete Elden Ring, but you might miss out on several helpful mechanics if you don't. There are many areas across the map called Spirit Springs which Torrent can use to gallop across the sky, all without ever taking fall damage. This allows you to skip lengthy treks across mountainous regions with the press of a button.

To top it off, you can fight on horseback using traditional weapons or spells. This is perfect if you want to avoid taking any damage and if Torrent takes too many hits, you can always resummon it by consuming a flask of crimson tears. Here's what you need to do to unlock the horse in Elden Ring.

Elden Ring dungeon locations

Elden Ring dungeon locations

Want to know where to find all of the Elden Ring dungeons? This open-world game has many optional areas to explore in every region, more so than any other FromSoftware game. These dungeons house some vitally important gear, from healing items and weapons to key items required to unlock new areas.

The dungeons are particularly tough as enemies are waiting to pounce on any unsuspecting adventurers daring enough to enter. Some even have deadly traps to avoid an untimely demise from a poison dart or a gargoyle tower burning you to a crisp.

We go over in far more detail elsewhere how to beat each of the Elden Ring bosses and where to find all of the well-hidden collectibles in every dungeon, such as the Elden Ring Ashes of War and the Elden Ring crystal tears. For now, though, if you simply want to find each one of the optional Elden Ring dungeons, you can find a list of their locations below.

Elden Ring bosses guide

Elden Ring bosses guide

Want to know how to beat the Elden Ring bosses? The most defining moments in any of the best Soulslike games are the tough boss fights. They can be tricky for several reasons: some are hard to hit consistently, others can squash you with just one attack. Elden Ring is also an open-world game, so as you'd expect, there are plenty of formidable foes with big health bars waiting to be discovered.

So far, all of the information we have on Elden Ring bosses comes from the network test last year. Therefore, their locations and item drops are subject to change in the final release. Since any region can have at least 13 bosses, keeping track of which ones you've beaten can be tough.

In this guide, you'll find a list of all of the Elden Ring bosses, where you can find them, which ones are mandatory, and what items they drop when you beat them. It's worth noting that, generally speaking, as you hunt them down, dungeon bosses are not as hard to kill as the major bosses. However, there are exceptions, so upgrading the Elden Ring Flash of Wondrous Physick can make all the difference.

Elden Ring Ashes of War locations

Elden Ring Ashes of War locations

Want to know the locations of every Ashes of War in Elden Ring? Players can customise their weapons and shields using Ashes of War, a special item that imbues armaments with unique abilities. All armaments have their own weapon arts, however, you can switch these abilities out for something different. The Ashes of War also change the properties of your armaments, allowing you to use almost any weapon with your chosen build.

It appears you can farm the Ashes of War to imbue multiple armaments with the same effect. Don't worry if you're struggling to find more, you can always remove Ashes of War from any piece of equipment for free. It's important to experiment with these abilities as they can make a huge difference in creating a powerful build.

The locations of the Ashes of War are fixed on the map, making it easy to create a strong build capable of defeating all of the Elden Ring bosses. Here's everything you need to know about Ashes of War, including where you can find them and what they do.

Elden Ring cookbook locations

Elden Ring cookbook locations

Want to know where to find Elden Ring cookbooks? These recipe tomes are essential for any would-be adventurer in the open-world game. With them, you can craft all sorts of valuable gadgets such as arrows that inflict elemental damage, items that heal status ailments, and consumables that boost rune acquisition for a short time.

Sure, you can purchase some cookbooks from reputable vendors, but you can also find them hidden in buildings or Elden Ring dungeons with help from Elden Ring map fragments, but so far, we've not obtained any cookbooks by slaying the Elden Ring bosses that call these dungeons home.

Once you do get a cookbook, though, you still need the ingredients listed in each recipe to make the items. Knowing how to make recipes in the first place is a crucial step and it's not an easy feat to find all of the cookbooks. So if you want to learn how to make specific items to aid you on your adventure, here's everything you need to know about Elden Ring cookbooks.

Elden Ring crystal tear locations

Elden Ring crystal tear locations

Want to know where to find the crystal tears in Elden Ring? Just like the Estus flasks in Dark Souls, you start the game with healing flasks that you can refill at Sites of Grace. However, this isn't the only type of healing item available - the Flask of Wondrous Physick is a customisable alternative.

To get the Flask of Wondrous Physick, you need to beat one of the optional Elden Ring bosses, namely the Groveside Cave's boss: the Beastman of Farum Azula. Once he's dead, you can open a chest containing the flask and two crystal tears that you mix to customise the flask's effects. These effects trigger simultaneously every time you take a sip, and you can swap them at any Site of Grace.

There are plenty more crystal tears out there to add to your flask, and we found a few of them during the closed beta late last year. We'll go over all of the crystal tears' effects and where you can find them to use with your Flask of Wondrous Physick.

Elden Ring reaches 600k Steam players one hour after launch

The Elden Ring release time has arrived, and players are already pouring in by the bucket full. It's already From Software's biggest Steam launch, and one of the biggest games on Valve's platform - ever - beating out some of the most venerable live service games to get there.

Elden Ring reached a concurrent PC player count of 616,891 one hour after launch, as SteamDB shows, and that number continues to rise. It reached 149,702 players just 20 minutes after launch, making it the biggest From Software game on Steam in the span of about two Bugs Bunny cartoons.

Most of Steam's biggest games - like PUBG, Dota 2, or CS:GO - are either inexpensive or free-to-play. The biggest premium launches on the platform include New World, which reached 913,634 concurrent players on launch weekend, and Cyberpunk 2077, which reached 1,054,388. To date, only five games have crossed the million-player threshold.

Elden Ring (and most of the Souls series) is Steam Deck Verified

Posted: 25 Feb 2022 04:43 AM PST

Elden Ring (and most of the Souls series) is Steam Deck Verified

If you want to play Elden Ring on the go, Valve has you covered. It should be no great surprise at this point, given how wide-ranging compatibility on the device aims to be, but Elden Ring is officially Steam Deck Verified, meaning Valve expects it to play great on the handheld. And if that wasn't enough, pretty much the entire Souls series is Verified, too.

Elden Ring's got full checkmarks across the board for Valve's compatibility metrics. That means "this game's default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck", " all functionality is accessible when using the default controller configuration", "this game shows Steam Deck controller icons", and "in-game interface text is legible on Steam Deck," as you can see on SteamDB.

Each of From Software's Souls games is playable on Steam Deck, too, as Wario64 notes on Twitter. Sekiro, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin, and Dark Souls III are all Verified, meaning they meet the same compatibility requirements that Elden Ring does. Dark Souls: Remastered is listed as 'playable', while the original version of Dark Souls and Dark Souls II are untested.

Terraria gets yet another update before Labor of Love

Terraria gets yet another update before Labor of Love

Terraria has now reached the stage where it's had so many final updates that even the jokes about them are getting exhausting. But hey, I'm not going to complain about further Terraria updates. The 1.4.4 patch, dubbed the Labor of Love update, is still on the way, but before then the developers have another, smaller update, sprucing up the game for Steam Deck compatibility and making some additional changes.

"When we sat down to enjoy Terraria on the Steam Deck for the first time," the devs say in the announcement, "we immediately realised that we needed to make a few tweaks to fully take advantage of all that this new system has to offer." To that end, they've built a default control setup for the Deck - which you're free to customise as you like, of course. If you're curious about battery life, the devs say they "typically get between 3.5 and 5.5 hours of playtime between charges - depending on brightness settings as well as the intensity of action in the game".

But 1.4.3.3, which is live now, isn't purely about Steam Deck optimisations. You can follow the link above for the full details, but the highlights include a big rebalance for the Deerclops, and some changes for NPC happiness, which should make it a bit easier to keep your AI friends pleased.

Halo Infinite’s mid-season update improves anti-cheat

Halo Infinite’s mid-season update improves anti-cheat

Halo Infinite's first mid-season update has arrived, with a handful of important updates to some of the game's larger technical issues. There's a fix for the first-person animation issues, a revamp to the audio mix, and - perhaps most notably - improvements to the anti-cheat system. However, if you're looking for more than bug fixes, you might be disappointed by these patch notes.

We've got "improved cheat detection and other anti-cheat improvements". Developers tend to be vague about anti-cheat developments for fear that too much detail would give hackers an easier time circumventing those systems, but hopefully you should see fewer cheaters going forward.

The update also resolves a long-standing issue with first-person animations, where you would see your arms or gun model animating at a lower frame rate than the game itself. Grenade throws, Needler supercombines, Ravager charges, footsteps, and gunfire have all also been made louder in the audio mix.

Ukrainian game developers ask for support following Russian invasion

This morning, following years of tension between the two nations, Russian armed forces invaded Ukraine. Details on exactly what's happening on the ground continue to be shaky, and Ukrainian civilians are fearful as violence continues following the Russian attack. A number of Ukrainian game developers have taken to social media today in order to ask fans for support.

"As of today, the Russian Federation has officially declared war on Ukraine," STALKER developer GSC Game World says in a tweet. "Our country woke up with the sounds of explosions and weapons fire, but is ready to defend its freedom and independence, for it rains strong and ready for anything. The future is unknown, but we hope for the best, are ever sure of our armed forces and our belief in Ukraine."

"We can't just stand by," Sherlock Holmes developer Frogwares says. "Russia attacks our homeland and denies the sovereignty of Ukraine. We are trying to stay safe, but this is war, there are no two ways about it. We call on everyone to force Putin to withdraw from our lands. We're a peaceful nation, and in all the years since we gained our independence, we've never attacked or threatened anyone. Because of this situation, our work will be impacted and our lives can be destroyed."
