Five Years of Fire Emblem Heroes: The Good, Bad and Still Missing

fire emblem heroes 5th anniversary

Nintendo mobile hit Fire Emblem Heroes is celebrating its fifth anniversary this week. It's a great time to look back at what it's accomplished, good and bad, and what we'd still like to see from the game. Let's hear from you too! Drop by the comments and share your thoughts.

fire emblem heroes good

The Good

STREAMLINED STRATEGY: Heroes strikes a good balance between the tactics of traditional Fire Emblem and a friendlier, mobile simplicity. Battles are short and fit easily on a phone, but they also still feel tactical. This wasn't the easiest thing to manage. — Graham

GACHA THAT WORKS: Fire Emblem Heroes really distilled the key appeal of Fire Emblem — its characters — into that most character-focused of games: The gacha hero collector, and made it work. The latter chapters also introduced a number of interesting wrinkles to its multiversal lore, and added appealing original characters of its own. — Josh

DISCOVERING CHARACTERS: I love that Fire Emblem Heroes exposes people to characters from games we didn't get. The Binding Blade? Roy's our boy and here! Thracia 776? Leif's leading his army into our lives! By doing so, maybe it is also encouraging players to look up details about the Japan-exclusive titles. — Jenni

SUSTAINED DEVELOPMENT: Has every addition been a hit? Not remotely. But you can tell that Intelligent Systems and Nintendo are at least trying new things, and that's given the game legs! In ways the rest of the Nintendo Mobile offerings really haven't. — Graham

fire emblem heroes bad

The Bad

THE MONETIZATION: For as many gacha games as I play, make no mistake: gacha monetization is inherently predatory, which is automatically bad! — Josh

MODE EXECUTION: After years of some truly abysmal new "mode" efforts that didn't add any interesting gameplay, recent Fire Emblem Heroes efforts have seen fun ideas like Pawns of Loki and Summoner Duels. These have tried players' patience, though, as power creep and nigh-broken units have made them a lot more frustrating to play. Hopefully we can see some work to remedy these. (And hey, maybe fixing some of the old stuff would be good, too! Like merge-and-skill-dependent scoring, which limits creativity and favors whales.) — Graham

FEH PASS CHOICES: I hate the Feh Pass-exclusive spark system. Some banners now give you a guaranteed character if you pull 40 times... if you subscribe. It feels quite predatory and I'm not a fan. Don't lock that behind a subscription, Intelligent Systems. — Jenni

MORE FEH PASS CHOICES: Honestly, in principle, I don't hate Feh Pass. The idea of paying a small amount and getting a good set of bonuses? More palatable to me than the normal, pay-a-bunch-for-very-little microtransactions. But quality-of-life features like more auto-battling and balance problems like summoner support boosts? That's less great. — Graham

feh missing

The Still Missing

HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO: We're missing male original characters who are the free, focus units for each book. So far we've had Fjorm, Peony, Reginn and now Ash. Heroines are great! But I need a hero. — Jenni

MORE SPINOFF LOVE: While there was a brief nod at Tokyo Mirage Sessions a few years ago, spinoff heroes have otherwise been left out in the cold. We want Cipher! We want Warriors, sort of, though those characters weren't particularly special! — Graham

A TRADITIONAL RELEASE: I wouldn't mind a full-fledged, single-player Fire Emblem game that uses the original characters and elements of Fire Emblem Heroes! When's that happening? — Josh

KELLAM: At least I think so? I suppose he might be in there somewhere and I'd never know it. — Graham

Tales of Arise Zoom Backgrounds Feature Lords’ Thrones

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 11:00 AM PST

With telecommuting and video conferencing prevalence increasing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of developers and publishers shared backgrounds for services like Zoom. The latest is Bandai Namco. It offered an assortment of Tales of Arise backgrounds with Lords' thrones designed to appear behind a person while perhaps in a Google Meeting or Zoom call. There are also no spoilers in any of them.

Each of the Tales of Arise backgrounds features thrones like the one the Renan Lords on Dahna sit in. While each one will be recognizable to those who played the game, there are no "hints" as to who they belong to. There aren't any spoilers regarding regions or people's identities. Rather, they seem like a series of elegant chairs from throne rooms. For example, one of the more recognizable ones is the Glanymede Castle throne from Calaglia

In the past, other Zoom backgrounds for games and series like Bleach, Naruto, Final Fantasy XI and Kingdom Hearts appeared.

Tales of Arise is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. People can also now access a Gallery App for the game. It features art, screenshots, and the Ufotable video that acts as an Introduction Animation.

Megahouse Persona 3 Thanatos Figure Shown

Yet another Persona figure appeared at Megahouse's MegaHobby Plus 2022 Winter showcase. This one is Thanatos from Persona 3. The company confirmed it would rerelease the Game Characters Collection DX statue that first appeared back in January 2020. There's no price or release window for the rerelease, however the original release was 23,000円 (~$200).

The rerelease of the Persona 3 Thanatos figure is being described as an Anniversary Edition. Like the first run, it will still be almost 12 inches tall. Though that height does take into account the Persona's sword. Translucent effect parts appear to make it look as though he is in the middle of an attack. The Persona plays a major role in the game.

Here's how it looks from various angles.

This is one of two Game Characters Collection DX figures from the series to show up in the second phase of the event. Megahouse also revealed a Persona 5 Loki figure. That one is quite early in development. As such, only concept art appeared.

Persona 3 is available on the PlayStation 2 both in standard and enhanced FES editions. Persona 3 Portable appeared on the PlayStation Portable. The Persona 3 Thanatos figure doesn't have a release date yet.

Aegislash is the Next Pokemon Unite Playable Character

Aegislash is the Next Pokemon Unite Playable Character

The next Pokemon Unite character will debut next week. The Pokemon Company International and Timi Studio revealed another ghost-type is on the way. Though actually, it is a ghost and steel type. Aegislash will show up in Pokemon Unite on February 10, 2022.

Aegislash is a unique sort of Pokemon. In the mainline series, it is known for being able to shift its form. So say it would use Iron Defense. It would then shift into the Shield Forme to prioritize defense. But any attack move would use Blade Forme.

The initial Pokemon Unite trailer for the character suggests this will carry over into this game. In the footage, both Blade and Shield Formes appear when certain moves are used. The announcement also confirmed the character will be an "All-Rounder" type that can work in offensive and defensive situations.

This is the second ghost-type Pokemon to come to Pokemon Unite in a row. In January 2022, Trevenant joined the cast. It is a Defender character.

Pokemon Unite is available on the Nintendo Switch, Android devices, and Apple iOS devices, and Aegislash will join its character roster on February 10, 2022.

Demon Slayer’s Mitsuri Will Appear as Pop Up Parade Figure

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 07:30 AM PST

mitsuri demon slayer figure

Good Smile Company opened pre-orders for a Pop Up Parade figure of Mitsuri Kanroji from Demon Slayer just in time for Valentine's Day. Pre-orders will close on March 3, 2022. For Japanese buyers, she will cost ¥3,900 and release within June 2022. Customers in North America can pre-order the figure for $38.99, and she'll ship out in August 2022.

The Demon Slayer Mitsuri figure stands at around 16 centimeters in height. This makes her slightly shorter than the normal 17 to 18 centimeters, but it shouldn't be noticeable. Despite her alert expression, she stands in a rather relaxed pose. You can also see her Nichirin Sword, though she is not holding it. As this is a Pop Up Parade figure, you cannot pose or move her in any way.

Here are some more pictures of the Mitsuri figure:

Mitsuri is one of the Hashira and the master of Love Breathing techniques. She appeared briefly at the end of Demon Slayer season 1, showing her shy but jovial demeanor. She does not fight in the show, and she does not appear as a playable character in Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles.

The Demon Slayer Mitsuri Kanroji Pop Up Parade figure will come out in Japan in June 2022 and in North America in August 2022. She is available for pre-order until March 3, 2022.

Preview: Ghostwire: Tokyo's Gameplay Loop Involves Shrines and Spirits

Ghostwire: Tokyo is going to be a game that dips into two worlds. It is grounded in reality, set in Shibuya. However, yokai and ominous characters from Japanese folklore lurk around every corner. An ominous person named Hannya lets chaos loose on the city. Fog turns people into spirits. Gates open. An exorcist that could have helped deal with it all is killed, but bound to a young man. More importantly, a recent hands-off preview event offered enlightening details about how Ghostwire: Tokyo's gameplay works.

Things began quite early in the game. It hasn't been long since Hannya attacked the city. Akito fused with KK, an exorcist who described himself as "one of the country's guard dogs who ran with a pack of strays." This is represented visually as a sort of black fog over Akito's right eye. (It also means that, in certain situations, you can leave certain actions to KK instead of handling it yourself.) Things began with the "duo" heading to Yugenzaka to start handling the city's issues.

Preview: Ghostwire: Tokyo's Gameplay Loop Involves Shrines and Spirits

It's here that a sort of gameplay loop begins to form for Ghostwire: Tokyo. As Akito explores Shibuya, he will come across shrines and Torii Gates. These gates will need to be cleansed. After he does, he'll gain access to shrines. These can contain things like katashiro that can be used to save spirits or new abilities. For example, during the preview session Akito started with a wind-based attack, then gained a fire-based one from one shrine. Gaining access to the shrine will also open up areas on the map. Which means he's growing in strength and helping to take back the city.

But what happens with a katashiro? These are paper dolls that can be used as talismans. In Ghostwire Tokyo, people might come across spirits of folks who encountered the fog. By using a katashiro, their spirits can be collected and preserved. (You can get them from shrines or your friendly neighborhood nekomata in a convenience store.) Once you have one, heading to a pay phone can provide an opportunity to send them "outside" the barrier around the city. KK's associate Ed set up the system. The game even keeps track of how many folks you saved. For example, during the preview session about 200 had been collected of the 240,000.

While heading to shrines, collecting spirits, and fighting visitors along the way are one part of Ghostwire: Tokyo gameplay, exploring locations seems to be too. For example, during the session Akito headed back to KK's former apartment. There he collected a bow KK had found before things went awry. However, while there another being with ill intent set up a barrier around the building. It could crush everyone inside, as well as alter reality within it. Akito needed to head around to find barrier stones. This meant exploring both the inside and outside of apartments there. When indoors, things would shift. Even some mild platforming was shown as a place's dimensions would shift and furnishings like couches would be suspended in midair. Once the barrier was dealt with, Akito could use Spectral Vision to follow the shadow of the offender and attempt to track them.

Preview: Ghostwire: Tokyo's Gameplay Loop Involves Shrines and Spirits

While the Visitor enemies and Akito were definitely around, they weren't the only residents of Shibuya shown during the session. Early on in the footage, a Shiba Inu appeared. It was barking at something unseen. It served as a warning that a Visitor lurked in an alleyway. When wandering the streets, tengu flew above. Akito could grapple onto them to reach a building's roof. One side quest on the way to the Shiroyama Shrine involved the spirit of an old woman concerned about her zashiki-warashi. Akito could take on the quest to save zashiki warashi, exorcise the corrupted person holder her hostage, and then gain her power as a reward.

So for now, we know of a handful of the tasks Akito (and KK) will tackle as part of Ghostwire: Tokyo's gameplay. Eliminating Visitors will be a regular occurrence. So will cleansing shrines and saving citizens' spirits. There will also be occasions where you'll investigate areas to take down barriers, as well as cleanse and purify corrupted areas or people. However, this is only a portion of things to come. More will likely come up as its 2022 draws nearer.

Ghostwire: Tokyo will come to the PS5 and PC on March 25, 2022.

Square Enix Reports Strong Third Quarter Results Thanks to Final Fantasy XIV

Posted: 04 Feb 2022 05:30 AM PST

Square Enix Third Quarter FFXIV

Square Enix released several financial statements concerning its third quarter results. While sales for the company's general game sub-segment went down, sales for its MMO sub-segment rose compared to 2020. Square Enix largely attributed its success in the third quarter to Final Fantasy XIV. The game saw a sharp increase in subscriptions during that period. Final Fantasy XIV's Endwalker expansion also released within the third quarter. As mentioned, it noted that its general game sub-segment went down in comparison to the previous year. This was largely due to a title like Final Fantasy VII Remake not releasing within that period. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

Additionally, Square Enix noted that performance within its mobile sub-segment was fairly weak within already existing titles. However, overall net sales within its mobile division rose in comparison to the previous year.

Leading up to the release of Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker, Square Enix saw a massive increase in players. In July 2021, the FFXIV Complete Edition had entirely sold out on PC and PlayStation 4. While players could eventually purchase the title again, it remained congested due to the sudden influx of players. Additionally, in October 2021 Square Enix announced the player base for Final Fantasy XIV officially exceeded 24 million players.
