Who Else Joined The List Of The 2022 Academy Award Winners?

Dune followed through with its nominations, taking home a handful of trophies as well. The Denis Villeneuve-directed film won 6 awards, including Best Sound, Visual Effects, Production Design, Original Score, Film Editing, and Cinematography. The studio waited to find out how successful it would be before greenlighting the sequel, and their decision has certainly paid off.

Another exciting win from the night is Drive My Car taking the award for International Feature Film. James Bond took something home, too, with the Original Song win for No Time To Die, giving the win to Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.

How Did The Comic Book Movies Do At The 2022 Academy Awards?

Comic book adaptations, mostly superhero flicks, earned a handful of nominations at the 2022 Academy Awards. This included technical nominations for films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. However, with Dune’s massive success in the technical categories, the comic book movies are left for the fans and the box office.

Aside from the wins (and losses), a few other heroes popped up during the ceremony. Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, among others, got screen time during a montage of most cheer-worthy movie moments. Though, the moment did feel out of place, especially considering how some of those films were not even eligible for the year’s awards. Another moment of superhero screentime was awkwardly placed in the ceremony, as Amy Schumer dedicated herself to a bit that included waring the Spider-Man suit and spraying silly string onto the stage.

Can The Oscars Succeed At Boosting Their Ratings?

Ratings for the Oscars have been declining in recent years. The Academy is desperate to stop the downward trend, and they continue to try new methods to boost the numbers. Unfortunately, many of the attempts from this year felt misguided and shoehorned into the ceremony. One example is when a pre-recorded segment of BTS, the famous South Korean boy band, discussed their love for animated films. It was far too quick to leave any sort of impact, and the band had no connection to any of the nominated films. Other moments include fan-favorite countdowns and a distracting and divisive change to the presentation of We Don’t Talk About Bruno.

Perhaps the most notable grasp at higher ratings is the inclusion of the Fan Favorite Award, which was given to Army of the Dead. The award didn’t take up much screentime, leaving us wondering if there was a point to it at all beyond giving a few moments of joy to its hardcore fans. Sure, it’s a great movie, but it’s not a real Oscar. So, why bother?

We’re not opposed to watching the ceremony try something new, as long as it is faithful to the integrity of the art of filmmaking. However, many of these tries only hurt the broadcast, disappointing fans who show up to learn about movies – not Tik Tok trends. Another controversial decision was to present certain categories before the ceremony started its broadcast. This was intended to help cut back on the length of the show, but they ended up finding their way to the telecast anyway, making us wonder why they bothered to switch things up at all.

The History Of Batman Podcast – Comic Years Digs Into the Cinematic History of The Dark Knight

Posted: 27 Mar 2022 05:05 PM PDT

The Batman movies keep coming out every couple of years. Either in solo renditions like the Cristopher Nolan films, or as part of a larger franchise attempt, like Ben Affleck's Batman. This year we will be lucky to get more than one Batman on film. After The Batman with Robert Pattinson, Michael Keaton is also suiting up as the 1989 Batman in the new The Flash movie. The same movie will reportedly also have Ben Affleck as Zack Snyder's Batman from the Snyder Cut. With all these new and returning Batman(s) coming to the big screen, it feels about the right time for a history of Batman podcast. Our own Managing Editor of ComicYears.com, Joshua M. Patton takes an in-depth look at all of the Batman movies that have immortalized various Batmen on film. So check out the history of Batman podcast, on this episode of the Comic Years Podcast.

The Batman Movies Vary In Their Tones, Themes And Leading Men

History of Batman podcast Robin. .

Joshua begins the history of Batman podcast episode with his Batman. As in, the version of the character and actor that was his first experience with Batman film. He starts off with the Adam West version, but, in many ways, made way for the first ever dark and gritty Batman in the Tim Burton movie. For many, it was this Micheal Keaton Batman that is their first. For myself, however, despite the many that came and went, it was George Clooney's version from Batman & Robin that was my first exposure to the character in film. And yes, while we know that of all the Batman movies, that one was seen as the worst, it was a lot of fun. Even Joshua admits the campy fun nature of film. In many ways, it was a modern-day return to the 1966 Batman with Adam West.

Batman On Film Has Had a Storied History

The history of Batman podcast features a very thorough look into each iteration of the character. Joshua does a great job of framing each portrayal with the larger context of the movie they're in. While it's easy to pick our favourite Batman in a vacuum, what's important is how the character fits into the story that's unfolding on screen. While Affleck was the perfect choice for this version of a dark brooding older-in-age Batman, so was Clooney as an ambivalent and sexy Bruce Wayne, whose charm somehow bled into his Batman too. And now, so it Robert Pattinson in this new Batman from Matt Reeves.

Joshua expands on this nuance as he goes through each of the Batman movies. What's great about this is that Joshua loves all the Batman movies in their own way. He breaks down how each Batman is a product of its time, the era the movie released in. While the Adam West Batman was campy and borderline hokey when watching now, it was 'serious business' when it released. Accordingly, every Batman does age with time. Even the best Batman trilogy for many, Nolan’s, has certain things that haven't aged all that well since their release. Joshua explains why.

So check out this episode of the Comic Years Podcast about the history of Batman on film.
