Orange Scones with a Creamy Orange Glaze

There are many different types of scones out there, and I am here for all of them! I have yet to find a scone that I didn’t like. Then again, I enjoy all kinds of food a bit more than the average person! These glazed orange scones are the perfect contribution to any breakfast meal or brunch. The dough has fresh orange zest, so the flavor is not too overpowering but so fresh and delicious. Plus, there is a subtle hint of orange flavor in the icing is really the cherry (icing!) on top.

Not only do they go perfectly with just about everything (because who doesn’t want orange at breakfast?!) and taste terrific, but they aren’t too hard to make either! Even the most beginner of bakers can whip these up like a pro. They take just over 40 minutes, and that includes the baking time! It’s time for you to grab these ingredients a make a batch or two… Your whole family will thank you later!

What Ingredients are in Orange Scones?

Glazed orange scones are filled with delicious ingredients and have some sugar in them! So if you’re looking for a healthy option, this isn’t it, but man, these sure do taste good! See the recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact ingredient measurements.

  • Flour: I used all purpose flour for this recipe!
  • Granulated Sugar: The suagr will sweeten up the scones.
  • Baking Powder: Baking powder will give your scones that breadlike texture.
  • Salt: The salt enhances all of the flavors in the recipe.
  • Orange Zest: Use the zest from fresh oranges and you will see that this is the secret ingredient that makes these scones stand out!
  • Butter: I used unsalted butter that was chilled so that it could be grated easily.
  • Heavy Cream: Leave your cream in the fridge until you are ready to use it.
  • Egg: The egg will bind the dough together.
  • Vanilla Extract: This will bring out the sweet flavors in the scone.
  • Sugar Crystals: These are used for topping on the scones.

Icing

  • Powdered Sugar: This will dissolve easily making the glazed nice and smooth.
  • Orange Juice: The orange juice gives it that subtle orange flavor to go with the orange scone.
  • Heavy Cream: Heavy cream will bind the icing so that it mixes up well.

How to Make Glazed Orange Scones

Glazed orange scones are delicious and easy to make. I can’t wait for you to try them! Once you make this recipe, it will for sure become a family favorite!

Dough

  1. Preheat and Prep: Preheat the oven to 375° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  2. Whisk Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and then the orange zest together.
  3. Grate the Butter and Mix: Use a box grater to grate the cold butter into the dry ingredients. Use your hands to lightly mix the butter into the flour.
  4. Form the Dough: In a medium bowl, combine the cream, egg and vanilla extract. Then, pour it over the butter and dry ingredients and stir to combine. Trying to work the dough as little as possible, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and work into a ball. Flatten into an 8-9 inch disc. Then, use a sharp knife to cut into 6-8 equal pieces.
  5. Bake: Arrange the pieces on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches between each one. Bake for 22-25 minutes, or until nice and golden brown. If you find the scones are browning too quickly, lay a sheet of foil over top of them to prevent them from burning while they finish baking. Allow to cool for at least 5-10 minutes before drizzling the icing over the top.

Icing

  1. Whisk: In a small bowl whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice and heavy cream. If needed then you can thin it with more orange juice 1 teaspoon at a time.

Tips for Baking Scones

Try out some of my tips and tricks so that your orange-glazed scones turn out perfectly! These are so good, it will be love at first bite!

  • Cold Ingredients: It’s important that your ingredients (like your butter and cream) are chilled and cold when you bake. Because, if your butter mets too soon while it’s baking then you won’t get that soft and flakey crust.
  • Don’t Overmix: You don’t want to overwork your dough. Make sure that everything is thoroughly combined and then leave it alone. It will make your scones be hard and not soft and flakey.

How to Store Leftover Scones

Orange glazed scones make a fantastic breakfast the next day! Here is how you can store them properly and then you can enjoy them for a few days in a row!

  • At Room Temperature: Once your scones have coole then place them in an airtight container. They will keep for about 3 days.
  • To Reheat: Simply pop your scones in the oven at 300 degrees farenheight for about 5 minutes. They will come out perfectly warm and fresh!

Irish Potato Candy

Posted: 28 Feb 2022 05:00 PM PST

Irish potato candy is a no-bake treat filled with cream cheese and coconut flakes and then topped with cinnamon. These aren’t your regular potatoes, they are candy, and I am here for it!

I love things that have cream cheese as the main ingredient. Whether it’s sweet or savory, I am willing to try it! If you love it too, then you must try my tried and true cheesecake egg rolls, these stuffed strawberries, or these super cute and delicious mini cheesecakes!

A paper bag on its side spilling out Irish potato candy.

What is Irish Potato Candy?

Fun fact about this Irish potato candy, It’s not even Irish! Nope! You may have never even heard of this candy unless you are from Pennsylvania. It originated in Philadelphia. Around the month of March, every year, it’s sold to candy makers throughout that part of the country. It’s safe for someone to assume that it’s made of potatoes if you base it on the name! Luckily, it’s made from delicious cream cheese, shredded coconut, and some cinnamon on top. If you like a Mounds bar, then you will probably like these!

You will see this recipe pop up around St. Patrick’s day, and there are many different versions of this out there to try. I personally love this cream cheese version because it’s delicious but not overly sweet. It’s a delightful treat and one that my kids not only love to eat, but they love to make! Try it out for the month of March, along with some green and festive mint brownies and a shamrock shake!

What’s IN Irish Potato Candy?

The ingredients list for Irish potato candy is short and sweet! This is a great treat to make because you probably already have all of the ingredients at home. See the recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact measurements.

  • Cream Cheese: Let this sit out and get to room temperature before mixing it in so that it mixes well, without any lumps.
  • Butter: I used unsalted butter at room temperature.
  • Vanilla Extract: This adds a subtle but sweet flavor to the candy.
  • Salt: The salt enhances all of the other flavors.
  • Powdered Sugar: Using powdered sugar instead of granulated suagr allows the filling to be silky smooth. It dissolves easier and tastes delicious!
  • Sweetened Flaked Coconut: This brings that delicious texture in a candy with cocolnut that we all know and love!
  • Ground Cinnamon: Dip it in this to not only add a delicious contrasting flavor but this is what makes them look like potatoes!

How to Make Homemade Irish Potato Candy

This simple recipe does not take a lot of time! It takes less than 30 minutes to put these all together, and then you chill them in your fridge for another 30 minutes. Easy as pie (or candy, I should say)!

  1. Beat: In a large bowl beat the cream cheese, butter, vanilla, and salt together until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  2. Combine with Powdered Sugar: Add the powdered sugar to the mixture and beat on low speed until incorporated. Increase the speed and beat on medium for about 1-2 minutes, until smooth and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl again and add the coconut. Using the low setting on your mixer, beat until the coconut it mixed throughout.
  3. Scoop and Chill: After you have mixed it then line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Then, scoop one tablespoon of the mixture at a time onto the parchment paper. Once the mixture has been all used up then chill for about 30 minutes.
  4. Coat: After it has chilled in the fridge then take out the mixture and roll the scoops between your hands. Form an oblong, potato shape. Roll in the ground cinnamon until fully coated. Place the cinnamon coated candies back on the parchment and place back in the fridge to chill. Keep chilled until ready to serve.
6 pictures showing how to make the filling, form it into balls and coat them with cinnamon.

Do I Have to Chill it in the Fridge?

Yes! Don’t skip this step! It’s essential to chill these before you coat them in the cinnamon sugar because if you don’t, they will be too mushy and not hold up. The texture is so much better after they have chilled and they will hold that classic, potato shape!

How to Store Irish Potato Candy

The key to storing this candy is that you want to keep it in your fridge. They are made of cream cheese so this is the dafest place to keep them. Not to mention that if they are left too long at room temperature they will lose their shape and get too soft. You can stack these in an airtight container and put it in your fridge. They will last for 4-5 days!

  • Chopped Vegetables: Keep in mind that you are eating your soup with a spoon! So you probably don’t want to chop your veggies up too large. Think of all that you want to eat in a spoonful and keep that in mind as you are cutting things up and preparing it.
  • Let it Cool Before Storing: Make sure that if you have leftovers of your soup that you don’t put it in the fridge right away. Put it on your counter and let it cool to room temperature and then place it in an airtight container to put in your fridge.
  • Simmer: When you have cooked your soup then you want to let it simmer. This allows it to stay warm but to also allow the flavors of all of your ingredients to blend together. It will add a depth to it and make it taste so good!
