How to choose an interior design style that suits you

Posted: 27 Apr 2022 09:25 PM PDT

You might be like me and love a few different designs and never really know what you'd call your interior style! If you're struggling to bring it all together and can't seem to get the flow right, then here are a few tips on how you can narrow it down to help you on your way.

It's easy to fall in love with lots of different interior design trends, but if you're not sure how to bring it all to life, then you might need to slim down your choices. Maybe you're starting out fresh and building a new house, or you think it's time for a cull and a few new pieces in your home.

Here are 4 tips to help you get started:

Research – the internet (and Pinterest) can help you research a style you might like. Save photos of rooms which catch your eye and of those you think you could live with. Gather a list of paint colours and even fabric swatches. Once you bring images and a few samples of things you like together you should start to see a pattern forming.

Inspired by – I find display homes are the most inspiring. A display home sticks to a theme cohesively throughout the home. It's a one-stop-shop for your styling inspiration. If you like beachy, then a display home decorated using this theme will continue it all the way through so can you visually see how they'd style the bedroom through to the kitchen and even outdoor living. Then you can add your own personal touches. Stalk a few project builder's websites as they often have room tours of their popular display homes.

Name it – even though you might feel like you've mashed a couple of styles together (once you look over your saved images/mood board) you might see a couple of interior design "buzz" themes pop out at you. Eg. Scandi, Industrial, Minimalism, Mid Century Modern, Classic, Contemporary, French Country, Boho. Then you can start searching for inspiration using just these couple of words.

Can you live with it – You might be in between a couple of styles, but that's ok! I am always in between styles. I like to combine a few together. I buy what I like and what I can afford. You must think about the practicality and use of the items in your home. There is no use buying lots of glass items or shiny things if there will be upkeep because the kids smudge food everywhere. Don't buy all white if that means you'll be scrubbing finger marks off it.

Research first, find your inspiration, put a name to it and then decide whether you can live with it.
