Emmy-Winning Director of ‘Chernolbyl’ Attached to ‘Dune: The Sisterhood’

Posted: 01 May 2022 12:55 PM PDT

Johan Renck, the Emmy Award-winner behind HBO series Chernobyl, is to direct the first two episodes of Dune: The Sisterhood, Deadline reports.

The series, which serves as a prequel to the films, was originally handed a straight-to-series order in 2019 by HBO Max. At the time, Denis Villenueve, who directed and produced 2021 film Dune: Part One, was set to direct the pilot.

However, Renck, who is currently finishing up sci-fi feature film Spaceman with Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano, will take over that mantle and will also exec produce.

Renck began his career in music videos, including David Bowie's final two videos for Blackstar and Lazarus. He has directed pilots for series including Vikings and Bloodline as well as episodes of Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead. He also directed all episodes of Sky series The Last Panthers featuring John Hurt and Samantha Morton.

Dune: The Sisterhood, which is based on Frank Herbert's classic novel, is set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides and follows the Harkonnen Sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit.

A "Harley Quinn" spinoff series titled "Noonan's" has officially been ordered at HBO Max, Variety reports.

The series will focus on lovable loser Kite Man and his new squeeze, Golden Glider, as they moonlight as criminals to support their foolish purchase of Noonan's, Gotham's seediest dive bar. The show is executive produced by "Harley Quinn" co-creators Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey, as well as "Harley Quinn" star Kaley Cuoco via Yes, Norman Productions. Sam Register also executive produces. Lorey will serve as showrunner on "Noonan's."

Schumacker and Halpern executive produce under their Delicious Non-Sequitur banner. The show is based on characters from DC and produced by Warner Bros. Animation. Halpern, Schumacker, and Cuoco are all under overall deals at WBTV.

"Harley Quinn" was renewed for a third season with its move to HBO Max, with Season 3 set to debut this summer.

Why is Frank Miller Going into Comics Business with Dan DiDio?

Posted: 01 May 2022 07:55 AM PDT

Anybody who’s a realist surely knew a figure as bad as DiDio wouldn’t stay away from the comics medium for long, much like Bill Jemas later returned with a venture called AWA, which seemed more like an excuse to produce comics intended for movie adaptation. But what’s really dismaying is that Miller would join forces with DiDio, as announced by the Hollywood Reporter (via Cosmic Book News and Bleeding Fool):

After decades of working for DC, Marvel and even indie publishers such as Dark Horse, creator Frank Miller is striking out on his own and launching a publishing banner.

Named Frank Miller Presents, the company will have the writer-artist behind The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City and 300 acting as president and editor-in-chief, with the goal of creating and curating a line of comics that hopes to capture Miller's distinct visual style while also working with a range of talent, from comics veterans to rising artists.

The company has been quietly in the works for months, if not years, and is coming to the launchpad with several titles, including a new Sin City comic and a return to Ronin, the sci-fi samurai creation Miller wrote and drew prior to finding mainstream crossover success with Dark Knight.

I vaguely remember reading Ronin myself many years ago, but can’t say it was such a big deal today. Though I must say, I had no idea Miller still retained the creator rights to the story, seeing as it was originally published by DC in 1983, some time before they launched the Vertigo imprint that became a creator-owned line, and I’d assume what was published under the DC banner at the time would’ve been under their ownership, unless they’d launched a special imprint like Marvel did with the original Epic line, which lasted about a decade, and Jim Starlin’s Dreadstar was originally published under that. But what’s galling about this news is who Miller’s partner is in this venture:

Joining Miller in the new venture is Dan DiDio, who acted as co-publisher of DC from 2010 to 2020 and will now serve as publisher at FMP. Silenn Thomas, the CEO of Frank Miller Ink, will serve as COO of FMP.

"Investing in artists and the future of comics has always been my one true passion and creative calling," Miller said in a statement. "Dan, Silenn and I couldn't be more proud to be launching Frank Miller Presents, which will serve as fertile ground for storytellers and new creations. Our focus for this publishing company is to cultivate a fellowship of artists and writers to mentor, collaborate and push forward not only each other but the art form as well."

After all the harm DiDio did to DC in nearly 2 decades, this doesn’t impress me any more than learning Jemas would open his own publishing outfit. At worst, it suggests Miller’s got no real issues either, despite how, at the time Miller originally wanted to write Holy Terror as a Batman story, DiDio was the EIC, and obviously did nothing to back Miller any more than Paul Levitz did. Rather, since that time, DiDio oversaw the introduction of a politically motivated Muslim Green Lantern, authored by Geoff Johns. Ever since, DC’s become even more of a wokefest.

And here’s something fishy about Miller’s other recent ventures besides comics themselves:

In recent years Miller has focused on screen work and had the YA reimagining of the King Arthur myth he created with Thomas Wheeler, titled Cursed, adapted as a Netflix series in 2020. He and Thomas acted as exec producers.

Wow, does that stand for Young Adult? Well I’ve been aware Miller boomeranged back to the left, and practically made a point of Trump-bashing along the way, so maybe this isn’t such a surprise either. And he worked at ultra-woke Netflix, no less. What can I say? Here, Miller had a chance to take a firm path that’d defy political correctness, and instead, he groveled back to the left-wing, for all the good it did him if we recall how a UK convention shunned him.

When Miller does stuff like this, succumbing to PC and teaming up with unrepentant trojan horses in publishing ventures, it makes it hard to care what he’s working on now, since for all we know, it’ll probably turn out to be something hardly worth the effort. I for one am certainly discouraged from buying anything by Miller’s new outfit if DiDio’s in charge of the publishing, and I’m sure there’s other people who feel the same way. Miller really knows how to be a letdown.

Now known as Avatar: The Way of Water, the 20th Century Studios sci-fi adventure releases overseas starting December 14 and heads to North America on December 16.

Producer Jon Landau came in from New Zealand to make the presentation on Avatar 2.

"The journey across all four movies will create a connected saga," said Landau, "To achieve our goals, we need a strong partnership with you and the studio…an end-to-end community."

Cameron beamed and sympathized with exhibition about their closure during the pandemic, but he's delivering something at the end of the year that must be seen in theaters.

The trailer has been pegged to run exclusively in cinemas on Marvel's Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, which rolls out next week, beginning May 4 internationally and May 6 domestically. That drew applause in the room. The trailer will then go online a week later.

The logline on the movie: Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) lives with his newfound family formed on the planet of Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and the army of the Na'vi race to protect their planet.

The CW Cancels ‘Batwoman’ & ‘DC’s Legends of Tomorrow’

Posted: 30 Apr 2022 03:25 PM PDT

Batwoman's time in Gotham has come to an end, THR reports.

The CW has canceled the DC Comics drama after three seasons. Showrunner Caroline Dries shared the news on social media Friday.

"Just got the sad news that Batwoman will not be seeing [season four]," Dries wrote on Twitter. "I am bummed, but full of gratitude. What an honor to make 51 episodes."

The cancellation comes a month after Batwoman aired its third season (series) finale on the network. It also comes as The CW's owners, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, are exploring a sale of the broadcaster, with local TV station giant Nexstar considered a possible buyer. That has led to speculation that the network would pare back its slate of scripted series.

Many comics fans weighed in on the announcement with “It’s about bloody time!”

Batwoman premiered in fall 2019 to solid ratings. The series initially starred Ruby Rose, who played the title character, aka Kate Kane, a cousin of Bruce Wayne who takes on the mantle of Batwoman when he leaves Gotham City.

Javicia Leslie took over the lead role in season two, playing Ryan Wilder, a former criminal who takes on the Batwoman persona after Kate's disappearance.

Deadline is also reporting that DC's Legends of Tomorrow will not return for an eighth season, which marks the end of a long road for the series, which premiered in 2016.

While The CW is known for giving its longer-running series a proper goodbye, this season of Legends ended on a cliffhanger. Sources, however, pointed out that the characters can easily populate other series in the DC Arrowverse so you may see one or two of them in other shows.

Co-showrunner Keto Shimizu revealed the news on Twitter. "It's been an incredible run. However, The CW has let us know that there will be no season 8… We are heartbroken, but also immensely grateful for the amazing work our cast, crew, and writers have contributed to the little show that could," she wrote.

While the Batwoman was a fairly “woke” series from the beginning, many felt that Legends of Tomorrow was a lot more restrained when it came to divisive identity politics, and it will be missed.

Why Actress Olivia Wilde Just Got Served Custody Docs at CinemaCon

Posted: 30 Apr 2022 12:55 PM PDT

During the Warner Bros. CinemaCon session at Caesars Palace's The Colosseum earlier this week, a strange thing occurred onstage. According to a report by Deadline, Olivia Wilde was briefly interrupted when an unidentified person approached from the front rows and slid a manila envelope across the front of the stage toward her.

"This is for me?" Wilde asked.

She retrieved the envelope and opened it. Wilde was not visibly rattled by what must have been a shocker. The manila envelope that was marked "personal and confidential,"  contained custody papers and legal documents from Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis.

"Papers were drawn up to establish jurisdiction relating to the children of Ms. Wilde and Mr. Sudeikis," a source exclusively told Us Magazine, noting that the Ted Lasso star says he did not have prior knowledge of when the documents would be delivered. "He would never condone her being served in such an inappropriate manner."

Separated since late 2020, Wilde and Sudeikis share two children. The couple were engaged but never formally tied the knot. In 2021 Wilde admitted she had begun a relationship with Harry Styles… yes, that guy.

With her personal life put suddenly on public display, the Wilde continued addressing the audience made up largely of exhibitors about her project. After the trailer for Don't Worry Darling played, it was met with great applause.

Maybe Jason just doesn’t want their kids around a guy like Styles, who knows?

The titles for the new, original works are Pandora and Ancient Enemies.

The movie is the return of the Rescue Rangers, which aired on television 30 years ago, in hybrid live-action/CG form. Lucasfilm Announces All-New Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi Animated Show

Posted: 30 Apr 2022 05:25 AM PDT

Lucasfilm continues to develop more animated Star Wars with ‘Tales of the Jedi,’ a whole new anthology series of shorts that will have its own panel at next month’s Star Wars Celebration on May 26. After the success of animated episodes such as The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Visions, Lucasfilm and Disney hope to continue their streak of animated shows with their newest contribution to the long-running sci-fi brand.

The Star Wars Celebration event website confirmed the new series, which this year corresponds with the premiere of the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The Tales of the Jedi discussion will be chaired by Amy Ratcliffe and will feature Dave Filoni as a special guest on May 28.

The fact that Star Wars guru Filoni will be on the panel means that he will have a hand in the series, which can only be a good thing for the franchise’s newest entry. While there are presently no information on how many episodes the series will have or how long they will be, with so many other projects in the works, knowing that it exists is probably enough for now for Star Wars enthusiasts. Let’s just hope it’s better than the terrible Star Wars: Resistance from 2018.

Tu-Dum!: Netflix Just Abruptly Fired Its Marketing & Editorial Staff

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 03:15 PM PDT

Netflix has abruptly sacked a massive number of employees, just a week after discouraging subscriber growth data was released. All of the employees were working in the Tudum platform, which is a website with written content that promotes Netflix shows.

The sound Netflix produces as it starts up is known as ‘Tudum’. According to a Bloomberg source, Netflix isn’t getting rid of Tudum entirely, but the layoffs are part of a larger restructuring of the company’s marketing department.

Bozoma Saint John, the company’s chief marketing officer, resigned last month.

Netflix’s stock was trading at roughly $600 per share when it engaged the Tudum team in September 2021, as some Twitter users pointed out. It fell below $200 this week.

All of this bad news comes only a week after Netflix disclosed that it has lost subscribers for the first time in a decade. Netflix lost 200,000 customers in the first quarter of this year. The stock plummeted 35% on Wednesday, its worst day since 2004, slashing $40 billion off its market cap. And this came after the streaming company said it lost subscribers for the first time in more than 10 years, and that it expects to lose as many as 2 million more in the current quarter. Despite investing $17 billion on original programming last year. During the pandemic’s lockdowns, numbers were at an all-time high, with user numbers reaching giddy heights of 222 million.

Since last week’s crushing financial losses, Netflix has declared a crackdown on password sharing, which is thought to occur in over 100 million households.   That ain’t gonna fix what ails Netflix though.
