This Elden Ring mod is the Star Wars Darth Maul RPG we need Posted: 01 May 2022 10:21 AM PDT This will be a day long remembered, as there's a new Elden Ring lightsaber mod that immediately transforms the RPG game into an even better Souls-like Star Wars game than even Jedi Fallen Order - and, at last, an Elden Ring Darth Vader skin, with a Maul one on the way. These mods are the first uploads by Xelerate on Nexus Mods for Elden Ring, and they already threaten to turn it into the ultimate Star Wars open-world game. The first mod is the double-bladed lightsaber pack, as favoured by Darth Maul, which replaces the Godskin Peeler twinblade and comes in a variety of colours. Xelerate promises that the Darth Maul skin you can see in the screenshot above "will be released soon", finally giving Star Wars fans that Darth Maul game they've been hoping for - even if via Elden Ring mods. The opportunity to drop Maul to his knees and scream "MALENIA!" at the start of her boss fight will be too much temptation for me to pass up. Someone is doing a Stanley Parable demake in Quake Posted: 01 May 2022 09:26 AM PDT A developer is working on a The Stanley Parable demake in the 1996 style of a Quake mod, which they announced shortly after the release of the game's latest remake: The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe Edition. The Stanley Parable is one of the best works of interactive fiction on PC and has received several expansive remakes with a lot of extra content since the original mod for Half-Life in 2011 - the most recent, as mentioned, arriving just last week. Developer Jaycie - in a manner not unlike Stanley himself - decided to go in the opposite direction, and do a demake of the original mod in Quake 1. After her original announcement, she asked her followers if they preferred a direct port of the original Half-Life mod to Quake, a 1996-style demake, or a demake with a little more of a more modern-ish style. The project is now a proper Quake engine '96 demake. You can check out Jaycie's progress with what she's now dubbed 'Stanley96' over on her Twitch channel. Fan turns Final Fantasy 7 Remake into FFVII classic Posted: 01 May 2022 08:25 AM PDT A YouTuber has used Final Fantasy 7 Remake mods and some camera slanting tricks to turn the JRPG game into a more recognisable 'classic' Final Fantasy VII - with the same level of graphics, just with a zoomed-out isometric camera angle and a gorgeous result. It's not the first time modders have recreated the original look and camera angles of the PS1 and PC Final Fantasy VII within the remake - they've even gone so far as to make a classic-style combat mod, too. However, while YouTuber Flurdeh uses camera mods created by Frans Bouma, it's more with the goal of recreating a "miniature world" with Final Fantasy characters for artistic purposes rather than anything actually playable. Flurdeh has done this for multiple games in the past, such as Red Dead Redemption 2. He uses tilt-shift photography to turn these games into beautiful dioramas that look like tabletop games, and the results are both sweet and stunning. It might be difficult to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake like this, but it sure looks cool. |
Cyberpunk 2077 with a cat indie game lands this summer Posted: 01 May 2022 07:18 AM PDT It's a Cyberpunk 2077 cat game, or at least a cyberpunk game where you play as a cat, and the Stray release date is now delayed to summer - after previously having been down for an "early 2022" release on both PlayStation and PC. Stray is an adventure game that was announced alongside the PS5 back in 2020 as the first game from the ex-Ubisoft team at BlueTwelve Studio, to be published by Annapurna Interactive. It's a PlayStation console exclusive, but it's also heading to PC too. Most importantly, it is an action-adventure game where you play as a cat exploring a large futuristic cyber-city, and that alone makes us want to play it. The goal is to "entangle an ancient mystery" and escape the robot-occupied city while sneaking, interacting, or just being "sometimes as annoying as possible" to its residents. So it's Cyberpunk 2077, A Plague Tale: Innocence, and Untitled Goose Game rolled into one - except with a cat instead of geese, rats, or Keanu Reeves. |
This Skyrim mod adds Elden Ring player messages Posted: 01 May 2022 05:08 AM PDT A new The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim mod adds the asynchronous multiplayer side of Elden Ring or Dark Souls to another of the best RPGs on PC - specifically, the iconic player messages system, so you can now tell other players in-game that every single wall in Whiterun is a liar. There are plenty of great Skyrim mods on PC, including a number of multiplayer mods, but now one of the most underrated parts of the Elden Ring experience has now been added to one of its fellow open-world games - the online player messages system. With the new Skyrim Building Bridges mod, players can create and leave messages for other players with the mod Dark Souls-style. The mod is compatible with both the recent Special Edition and Anniversary Edition of the fantasy game. The messages appear as paper notes on the ground, and you can even rate their helpfulness as you can in Elden Ring - with particularly helpful players being rewarded with the ability to leave longer messages, more often. Valorant 4.09 patch nerfs Chamber Posted: 01 May 2022 03:53 AM PDT The latest Valorant 4.09 patch notes are available in the multiplayer game's public beta test area, and they point towards a significant Chamber nerf - in particular, towards his Trademark ability. You'll also soon be able to better mute your teammates, too. Out of all the Valorant agents and abilities, Chamber's Trademark trap can be one of the most equally useful and troublesome powers in the FPS game. Basically, it allows the player to place a trap that casts a slow-down field on an enemy after a short countdown. Its power cost is low, making it an all-round useful ability. A little too useful, in fact. As Riot describes, Trademark "outperforms other Sentinel tools in both reliability and power", so the team is nerfing it. Trademark charges are reduced from two to just one, the power cost is upped from 150 to 200, and it's louder now too. "This should mean Chamber will have to make a choice based on if he wants to play selfishly around his Trademark, or place it to help his teammates instead." Even Hollow Knight-like indie games hate the Silksong delay Posted: 30 Apr 2022 09:59 AM PDT Haiku the Robot is a new platform game in the style of hack-and-slash Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight, and apparently, even fellow indie games are tired of the wait for that game's sequel - as this Haiku the Robot Silksong Easter egg suggests. Hollow Knight: Silksong, the follow-up to Team Cherry's beloved action-adventure game, was announced back in 2019 and there hasn't been much announced about the sequel since - other than a couple of silky songs and the promise that it'll only come out "when it matches the quality" of Hollow Knight. Three years later and fans are impatient to hear more about the game, and apparently, fellow 2D indie games like Dark Souls are too. Haiku the Robot is highly influenced by Hollow Knight and was just released this week, so it's impressive that players have already discovered its Silksong Easter egg. You can examine a statue in a graveyard that features the haiku, "to those in the distant future, should you find my grave, I ask this: is Silksong out yet?" |
You can get the best Jurassic World game for only $1 Posted: 30 Apr 2022 08:37 AM PDT Despite last year's Jurassic World Evolution 2 being good we still kind of prefer the original management game - and now, the best Jurassic World game is available for the pauperly sum of just $1, with the complete edition and all expansions available for not much more than that. With the new Jurassic World: Dominion trailer hopefully getting you hyped up to play some dinosaur games on PC, you might want to find out if you can do better at managing the little Godzillas than John Hammond, Claire Dearing, et cetera. If so, Jurassic World Evolution is still probably your best bet - and right now, it's a cheap bet too. While it's been given away free on the Epic Games Store previously, this is the cheapest the Steam version of the building game has ever been - just $1 / 71p for the base game with the Humble Jurassic bundle. You can also get a few DLC dinosaur packs if you pay over the average. RELATED LINKS: Jurassic World Evolution tips, Jurassic World Evolution enclosure guide, The best building games on PC |
Battlefield 2042 and FIFA 22 Game Pass likely coming soon Posted: 30 Apr 2022 06:53 AM PDT It looks like a FIFA 22 and Battlefield 2042 Game Pass release could happen as soon as next week, according to a couple of new rumours - including a leak from the Xbox store itself showing EA's multiplayer game and football game as part of the Game Pass May games. While only still a rumour, EA has increased the amount of games available on Game Pass for Xbox and PC via its EA Play app recently - such as Dragon Age 2 and Star Wars Squadrons in April. Now, it seems as if the publisher is readying one of the best sports games on PC and a struggling shooter for Game Pass. Battlefield 2042 first leaked as an imminent Game Pass release on a couple of European storefronts, as reported by German site Xbox Dynasty (via ResetEra) and Polish site XGP (via Reddit). The page for the FPS game had a Game Pass badge added to it, and Xbox Dynasty reported that both it and FIFA 22 are now available on Game Pass - they just can't be downloaded yet. |
Survival game The Long Dark gets paid season pass this year Posted: 30 Apr 2022 04:51 AM PDT In its latest developer diary, Hinterland Studio says that a The Long Dark season pass is coming "later this year" - which will represent the first paid DLC for the popular survival game since it was released eight years ago in 2014, as the studio founder hands the reins to a new lead. In a lengthy April update on Steam, Hinterland founder Raphael van Lierop talks about the future of The Long Dark and the changes coming to the open-world game - specifically, about the team's plans to "decouple" the sandbox survival mode and the story mode. He explains how The Long Dark has steadily "increased in scope and complexity" to the point where it has become "unwieldy". Furthermore, the close connection between the two modes meant that certain planned updates for one mode "couldn't really be done because of how they might impact the other". However, the team is now at the stage where it can "update survival independently of story". According to Raphael, players can now expect "a whole new era of survival mode content updates that will bring new life and new energy back into The Long Dark". |
Dead Space dev on PUBG horror game: “almost time” for reveal Posted: 30 Apr 2022 03:25 AM PDT It's been a long time since we heard anything on the PUBG horror game from the creator of Dead Space, but apparently it is "almost time" for The Callisto Protocol gameplay reveal - possibly even at Summer Game Fest in June, in fact. The Callisto Protocol is a new horror action-adventure game set in the PUBG Battlegrounds universe - for some reason - made by Striking Distance Studios, which includes several members of the ex-Visceral team that made Dead Space, such as series creator Glen Schofield. So, it's an exciting prospect - except that we haven't heard anything about it since its reveal at The Game Awards in 2020. Now, founder Glen Schofield has revealed some new concept art from The Callisto Protocol on his Twitter account, showing a creepy zombie-like human covered in an organic mass. Tantalisingly, Schofield also confirms that "it's almost time to show you the real thing". The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley replied with the classic teasing 'watching' emote. Given that Keighley also hosts Summer Game Fest in June, it's not that far of a stretch to imagine The Callisto Protocol getting a proper reveal at the show. |
Valheim update shows off new Mistlands creatures and ruins Posted: 29 Apr 2022 10:23 AM PDT Developer Iron Gate has posted a short but tantalising Valheim update to the game's Steam news page, providing fresh information on development for the survival game's newest Mistlands biome. The update shows off a couple of structures that the Valheim dev team has been working on for the Mistlands, with some rather striking stone designs, as well as unveiling the biome's first mammal, the Mistlands hare. The work-in-progress Mistlands area, which is the first new biome since the game's release, is still under construction. While you can visit it in-game, there is currently very little there and no active creature spawns can be found. Originally it featured giant trees and spiderwebs, although these were removed in a patch last November and the current location is fairly barren. The Iron Gate team says that "just like the other areas of Valheim, the Mistlands were once a place where civilisations of old built homes and strongholds alike. In the past month we have been finalising the designs of these structures and we quite like how they fit in the world!" The devs note that these designs may change somewhat before they arrive in the final game, as they have been built mostly intact but the intention is to turn them into weathered ruins to emphasise their age. Genshin Impact 2.7 delay announced by Mihoyo Posted: 30 Apr 2022 04:01 PM PDT Developer Mihoyo has announced a Genshin Impact 2.7 delay, stating that the next big Genshin Impact 2.7 release date has been temporarily postponed. The delay is likely at least in part due to the recent COVID-19 lockdown in Shanghai where Mihoyo is based. This means players will have to wait a bit longer for the much anticipated new Genshin Impact characters Yelan and Kuki Shinobu, who are due to arrive in the version 2.7 update. Fans of the open-world RPG were anticipating a May 11 release date for version 2.7, based on the regular six week development cycle that Genshin Impact updates have mostly stuck to in the past. However, this announcement almost certainly means that the update will be arriving a little later down the line. The official Genshin Impact Twitter account which announced the delay did not give a specific timeframe, but said Mihoyo "will provide the corresponding information to Travellers as soon as possible." Datamined information for Genshin Impact 2.7 means some of the key components of the update are already out there. Part of the 2.7 trailer has been leaked, though it doesn't give away much new information. New character Yelan's ascension materials are already likely known, so check out our guide if you want to use the extra time provided by the delay to prepare the things you need to level her up when she arrives. Final Fantasy 16 update: RPG in “final stages,” says Yoshida Posted: 29 Apr 2022 08:15 AM PDT Naoki Yoshida, producer on Final Fantasy 16 alongside his work on the hugely successful MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, has given a Final Fantasy 16 update in an interview with Uniqlo Japan's in-store magazine saying that FF16 is in the final stages of development. Via translation by aitaikimochi on Twitter, Yoshida hopes that players who have drifted away from Final Fantasy will find it to be a game that reinvigorates "the passion that you once had with the series." It's been a while since we heard much about the development of Final Fantasy XVI, with the upcoming JRPG having its development delayed "by almost half a year" due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fans were reassured that the game's next big reveal would be due in spring 2022, so this brief nugget of information should come as welcome news as it suggests things are still on track for the time being. Yoshida's statement, part of an interview for a special 35th Anniversary edition of the Uniqlo magazine, also speaks to their general goals with the project. Yoshida emphasises that Final Fantasy XVI is designed to be a single-player experience which "focuses on the individual player and immerses you in the story." |
YouTuber beats Minecraft challenge run with no kills Posted: 29 Apr 2022 06:25 AM PDT Minecraft challenge runs are a staple of the crafting game's creator community. It's generally not what we'd call a violent game, but you do end up killing a surprising number of enemies in a normal playthrough - whether that's the zombies that bother you at the beginning, farming items from creatures in the Nether, or just slaying the Ender Dragon - and so a pacifist playthrough is trickier than you might think. You enact a lot of violence without ever really planning on it. You don't have to though, and we know that now because of SwitchBackMongo, a Minecraft YouTuber who mainly plays in Hardcore. SwitchBackMongo decided that the cycle of violence had to end and embarked on a journey to defeat the game without killing any Minecraft mobs. Well, mostly. They technically didn't kill anything, but the explosive beds - that's right - they used around the Ender Dragon definitely did. Anyone who's played Minecraft before will know that if you're looking for resources, you end up having to defend yourself. When you're deep in the crust of the overworld, skeletons, spiders, and creepers are all going to try and find and kill you, so just avoiding them is a fairly titanic effort. Even the simple act of grabbing some iron can get you into a fight or, y'know, killed. Remember, this is Hardcore, so death isn't an option. Total Warhammer 3 Immortal Empires release date: not before July Posted: 29 Apr 2022 05:59 AM PDT Creative Assembly has published the Total War: Warhammer 3 roadmap for its 2022 DLC releases, which includes two free Regiments of Renown unit packs and a rough window for the Total Warhammer 3 Immortal Empires release date. The RTS game's much-anticipated Immortal Empires DLC is set to release in Q3 2022 (July - September), which is probably later than fans would have hoped given that Warhammer II's Mortal Empires campaign released just a month after the base game's launch. Q3 will also see the arrival of mod tools with the Total War Assembly Kit. The Total Warhammer III Immortal Empires combined map is scheduled to launch with update 2.0, and will unite all three Total War: Warhammer games into one grand-scale campaign for players that own all three of the titles. The mode will intially be available as an integrated open beta, and Creative Assembly calls it "a monumental undertaking that will continue to grow and evolve" over time. Update 2.0 will also see overhauls for the remaining races who haven't been brought up to date with Total Warhammer III's newer mechanics. First up will be the Warriors of Chaos, who are likely to see new systems, units, and balance to help bring them up to speed with the current game. Also releasing alongside update 2.0 is the first true DLC pack, currently titled Lord Pack I. This will introduce new legendary lords, heroes, and other units which can be used in both grand campaign and multiplayer modes. Bungie’s claim against Destiny 2 cheats seller dismissed Posted: 29 Apr 2022 04:27 AM PDT The everlasting struggle between game companies and cheat sellers rages on, with recent developments to a complaint filed by Bungie at a Seattle federal court. The FPS game's developer is accusing Destiny 2 cheats seller AimJunkies of both copyright and trademark infringement for its 'Destiny 2 Hacks' toolset. TorrentFreak reports that U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Zilly has now dismissed Bungie's claims of copyright infringement, although the trademark infringement accusations still stand. Bungie had success in its ongoing fight against cheat manufacturers earlier this year when it successfully sued GatorCheats alongside Valorant developer Riot Games. The lawsuit ended with a £2 million settlement and the shutdown of GatorCheats. However, Bungie's case against AimJunkies has now hit a slight stumbling block with the Judge's ruling that Bungie "has not pleaded sufficient facts to plausibly allege that AimJunkies copied constituent elements of Bungie's work." This does not mean the end of the case, as Judge Zilly concluded that the trademark infringement case was suitably pled. This refers to AimJunkies' unsolicited use of the Destiny name and logo in a manner which "is likely to cause confusion, mistake, or deception as to the source, origin, or authenticity of the cheat software." The Judge notes Bungie's claim "that it has invested substantial resources in marketing, advertising, and distributing" using the Destiny name and logo, meaning that its "false origin" claim (often tied into trademark infringement) is also being upheld.
