| You can now play Doom without even loading your PC Posted: 04 Jun 2022 10:26 AM PDT There are Doom ports to everything under the sun, from Game & Watch to Minecraft to a digital camera, so being able to run the classic FPS game on a regular PC isn't that impressive - but it is if you've barely turned it on. The latest Doom port allows you to run it directly from a PC BIOS firmware, making Doom more important than Windows. Doom is one of the most famous all-time classic old PC games and it's still perfectly playable today, but for some reason, the entire world is obsessed with bringing it to as many platforms as possible - from tiny PCs to a SEGA Genesis to a restaurant. And now, it's playable as part of a system BIOS. Coreboot is an open-source BIOS system firmware, and update 4.17 is out today (via Toms Hardware). It supports a load of new motherboards, a new bootloader, and, yes, Doom. Users can create 'payloads' to add ROM code to Coreboot, including some basic games that load up in the linear frame-buffer - and now, someone's made Doom for it. | Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 3 release date speculation Posted: 04 Jun 2022 10:43 AM PDT Epic Games confirmed the Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 3 release date at the start of the current season. Unfortunately, we don't know the story details for the battle royale game's new season, but right now, there's a war between the Seven and the Imagined Order, set to conclude in the Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 end event. No matter who wins this final battle, the Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 3 release date will be upon us as the dust settles. So what can players expect? It's highly likely that the Collider, the enormous spire in the centre of the map, may change everything as we know it. We also reckon that the appearance of Sideways weapons, last seen at the end of Chapter 2, indicates that the Cube Queen is somehow still involved. There are certainly more questions at this time than answers. Will Tilted Towers get rebuilt or eradicated? Was there a deeper meaning behind the secret Klombo snow mounds and Klombo sand mounds? And perhaps the most important question on fans' minds: will No Build mode become a permanent game mode after Chapter 3 Season 2? Of course, all will become clear when Fortnite Season 3 begins, but for now, here's everything we've managed to dig up about the new season. | Frostpunk dev confirms 3 games and a Summer Game Fest reveal Posted: 04 Jun 2022 09:22 AM PDT With Summer Game Fest coming up fast, studios have begun teasing their upcoming games for reveals at the not-E3 event. The latest is from Frostpunk and This War of Mine developer 11 Bit, which just announced a reveal of its next game for the PC Gaming Show with a teaser trailer - as well as confirming that it has three games in development, along with Frostpunk 2. Today, 11 Bit Studios revealed a tiny highly-teasing teaser trailer for a brand new game that the studio plans to reveal during the PC Gaming Show on June 12. The rather sinister teaser, which you can see below, shows a man waking up in a hospital bed and the quote from surgeon Alexis Carrel, "Man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor." Creepy stuff. 11 Bit is also working on another new game codenamed Project 8, which it revealed back in 2018 and is still apparently being worked on. The only thing for sure is that it's not a management game or a city-building game like Frostpunk. RELATED LINKS: Best city-building games, Best survival games, Upcoming PC games |
| Vampire Survivors update 0.7 adds stage 5 and probably chaos Posted: 04 Jun 2022 07:23 AM PDT The new Vampire Survivors update 0.7 hits on June 9, just in time for Summer Game Fest, and it'll bring stage 5 to the roguelike game - as well as likely more insanity. Other than a new level, the Vampire Survivors patch notes confirm new power-ups and an additional weapon, plus its evolution. The 0.7.0 update for the vampire game has an ETA of June 9 and the patch notes are now available on the Vampire Survivors Discord - but, as fans know by now, the patch notes are deliberately vague. The 0.6.1 update notes claimed "less content than usual," for example, and it turned out to be the game's biggest, craziest patch yet. Developer Poncle confirms the "first iteration" of the proper Stage 5, two new Arcana abilities, one new weapon and its evolution, and one new power-up. There's a lot unsaid here, as usual, as "one new weapon" could easily be swarms of angry cats. There will also be a toggle to turn off Golden Egg bonuses, as well as some bug fixes for them not working, and power-up costs will now increase by a flat rate rather than a percentage. | The best RPG game on PC is now Steam Deck Verified Posted: 04 Jun 2022 04:56 AM PDT It's definitely one of the best RPG games on PC and there are plenty who would argue about it actually being the best RPG of all time - and now, it's a playable Steam Deck game too. No, it's not Skyrim - Divinity: Original Sin 2 on Steam Deck is now Verified and completely functional. While Larian Studios has long since moved on to Baldur's Gate 3 - which should be fully completed and released in 2023 with any luck - its previous RPG Divinity: Original Sin 2 stands as one of the best fantasy games on PC, and in terms of sales, players seem to agree. Larian has previously come out in support of Valve's Steam Deck, calling it "amazing" and complimenting how well both of the Divinity: Original Sin games worked on the hardware. "I'd personally recommend playing them both on it," said Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity director Swen Vincke. However, despite this, Divinity: Original Sin 2 wasn't actually Steam Deck Verified at the time - well, now it is, according to Steam and Larian. | Quake remastered devs want an Unreal game remake Posted: 04 Jun 2022 03:42 AM PDT An Unreal game remake could be on the cards from the team behind last year's Quake remastered. Apparently, Nightdive Studios has "reached out" to Epic Games about a possible Unreal 1 remastered release - which would finally mark the return of one of the best FPS games on PC. Despite the popularity of Epic's Unreal Engine - which these days powers everything from The Witcher 4 to the next game from the Alien Isolation team, as well as the studio's own Fortnite - the engine hasn't been used to create a new Unreal game since the free Unreal Tournament game, which is pretty dead now. While it's not a new Unreal single-player game, Nightdive Studios - the team behind the Quake remaster, bringing Doom 64 to PC, and the upcoming System Shock remake - wants to remaster the original, best Unreal game. According to Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick, Unreal and Gears of War co-creator Cliff Bleszinski "reached out" to Epic head Tim Sweeney after Quake remastered released in order to "give Unreal the same treatment." |
| How to enable Diablo Immortal crossplay and cross-progression Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:59 PM PDT Want to play Diablo Immortal crossplay? The open beta is now live on both PC and mobile, so naturally, you may be wondering if you can enable cross-progression and crossplay between the two platforms. To get Diablo Immortal crossplay working on both mobile and PC, all you need to do is make your character on mobile and then head to the 'account' tab of the settings menu. Next, click the 'connect your account' option and link it to your battle.net account. There is also the option to log in to your battle.net account from the title screen once you've made your first character, and, if you're unsure of which class to go for, check out our Diablo Immortal tier list to make this step a little easier. Oh, and if you have already started playing on mobile then you'll be prompted to link accounts as soon as you boot Diablo Immortal on PC, so it's hard to miss. As Diablo Immortal is always online, hopping between mobile and PC is pretty seamless - you can even log into one platform while playing on the other, and battle.net will automatically save your progress and boot you off the original session. | Escape from Tarkov Arena is a standalone competitive FPS game Posted: 03 Jun 2022 02:43 PM PDT Battlestate Games has just announced Escape from Tarkov Arena, which it turns out is not a location in the Escape from Tarkov we've grown to know and love over the past couple of years. It's a standalone game featuring more traditional multiplayer PvP sessions, with all the "hardcore game mechanics" featured in Escape from Tarkov. Rather than the raid-based gameplay found in Escape from Tarkov, Arena is based around more action-packed PvP matches, the kind you'll be familiar with from countless multiplayer FPS games over the past several decades. The setting is still the fictional city of Tarkov, where a mysterious group called 'The Arena Masters' organises modern gladiatorial battles as a spectator sport. Battlestate says Escape from Tarkov Arena will feature both PvP and PvE modes, with weapon and gear unlocks, and the ability to play as your character from the main Escape from Tarkov game. The arenas look appropriately dystopian: there's a heavily modified partial airliner hull with tyre barricades and plywood set up to create bits of cover and concealment, as well as a larger airport concourse area with urban combat training structures set up along the floors and hallways. | Diablo Immortal leveling guide Posted: 03 Jun 2022 12:56 PM PDT What's the secret to Diablo Immortal leveling? Obviously, the name of the game is to soak up as much experience as quickly as you can in order to unlock more skills to do more damage and gain even more XP. But since Diablo Immortal is structured as a mobile game, there are some additional sources of experience you'll want to look out for regularly, especially as you make your first steps in the RPG game. At its core, Diablo Immortal is similar to its predecessors in the way you develop your characters: killing monsters gives you experience, gold, and loot, and you'll use this to advance in levels and gain additional power. Leveling up itself is a cinch: you'll gain a boost in power through some background stat gains automatically. The only thing you'll have to manage when you gain a level is your Diablo Immortal skills loadout. As you progress through the initial experience levels, you'll unlock new skills for your Diablo Immortal class, and these skills will in turn gain upgrades every few levels after that. | Madden NFL 23 PC version won’t have next-gen features Posted: 03 Jun 2022 12:32 PM PDT Just as it did with last year's edition of the American football game, EA Sports has opted to make the Madden NFL 23 PC edition a port of the last-gen console version, putting it in line with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 experiences. That means this year's Madden game will lack some of the flashy new features EA's been highlighting in Madden this year. One of those is the new 'FieldSense' animation and physics system, which EA Sports says allows players to 'hit anything' and provides enhanced control over player movement and actions. FieldSense drives some of Madden NFL 23's other new features, such as skill-based passing and 360 cuts, but those will all be missing on the PC edition of the game. Last year, EA Sports said it was porting the Xbox One/PlayStation 4 version of Madden 22 to PC rather than the current-gen version because "the team is focused on making the best, quality experience on new consoles before looking to upgrade other platforms." It appears that this remains the case for the 2023 edition. |
| Rust update completely changes gunplay Posted: 03 Jun 2022 11:38 AM PDT Facepunch's Rust Combat Update is live now, and it's the biggest change to Rust's combat since the multiplayer survival game first released in 2013. One of the most significant changes in the combat update makes recoil more bearable and less like you're fighting the gun instead of your enemies. "Ultimately, being good at first person shooters and having the drop on someone wasn't good enough," Facepunch says in the patch notes. "This was fun for people who could spend thousands of hours training their aim, or morally bankrupt individuals who would choose to use scripts to gain an advantage. This was not fun for 99% of the population, and it's time for a change." With the new update, automatic weapons gradually become more inaccurate the longer you hold the trigger down, so you're not struggling with intense recoil the moment you start firing anymore. Facepunch adjusted the bullet weighting as well. Approximately 20% of the bullets fired will land in the center of the spread, which means automatic weapons are now less useful at a distance – something Facepunch said should help encourage players to think about the best weapon for each situation. | Here’s where Xur is in Destiny 2 today Posted: 03 Jun 2022 10:19 AM PDT Xûr is Destiny 2's Exotic gear merchant. He appears every weekend to sell the game's most coveted items in exchange for Legendary shards, but if you're a casual player with limited shards to spend, it can be hard to know which of his wares is most worth your investment. That's where we come in. As of June 12, 2020, it appears that Xûr is back to providing random rolls - so the Exotic merchant is providing more excitement than he has in a long time. Xûr appears every Friday at 10am PDT / 1pm EDT / 6pm BST, and will stick around until the Tuesday reset. We'll update this guide shortly after he arrives, so if you're reading this, you need only read on to learn where he is, and which are the best items he's selling this week. Now we're in Beyond Light territory, but Xûr's first appearances have been at the usual spots - so maybe don't expect too many surprises from the merchant in the new year of Destiny content. | Grab God of War on GeForce Now before it leaves the platform for good Posted: 03 Jun 2022 10:06 AM PDT Sony Santa Monica's God of War is leaving GeForce Now on July 1, Nvidia has announced in a new GeForce blog post. It's not all bad news, though. Anyone who accesses the game once before July 1, even just to claim and launch it, will have it in their GeForce Now library permanently, even after the game leaves the service. As with all games on GeForce now, you'll need to actually own the action-adventure game on PC (via Steam) first before you can add it to your library. So far, God of War is the only one of PlayStation's current PC ports playable on the service. Days Gone and Horizon: Zero Dawn remain in popular demand among GeForce Now users, though there's no sign of either landing on the cloud platform in the near future. That may change as PlayStation ramps up its PC plans, though. In May, Sony posted a job description looking for a candidate to help shape their PlayStation PC strategy, and an investor report mentioned Sony believes its PC game sales will reach $300 million in 2022 alone. |
| Dragon Age 2 characters explain its recent acclaim, says dev Posted: 03 Jun 2022 10:04 AM PDT Just as news of Dragon Age 4's full title arrives, a former series director's deep dive video talks about how the once-maligned Dragon Age 2 "is very fashionable to like now because it's the first BioWare game to intentionally put the characters first." Mark Darrah, former BioWare project director on the RPG game, has released a video in his 'Memories and Lessons' development series talking in depth about the fantasy game's rushed development and the achievements he's most proud of the team for. "Dragon Age II is a game that is about constraints," says Darrah in the hour-long video posted to his 'Old game dev advice' YouTube channel. Following the closure of BioWare's acquisition by EA in 2008 just before Dragon Age: Origins shipped, he explains, the publisher was eager to release BioWare's MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic as a competitor to World of Warcraft. According to Darrah, that game's pushback out of the 2011 fiscal year left EA "pretty mad at BioWare" and insisting that a game was shipped to "plug the hole" for that financial year. This led to the decision to rework Dragon Age II's design, which was originally planned to be similar in scope to what Dragon Age: Inquisition would later become, into a game that could fill those needs. While some work from what was originally a second expansion pack for Origins was rolled into the project, says Darrah, he is uncomfortable with language suggesting the game was "built out of an expansion pack," because almost no assets or levels had been created beforehand and he feels it minimises the team's accomplishment of building the game in less than 15 months. |
| The Division 2’s latest event is delayed due to a fancy backpack Posted: 03 Jun 2022 09:36 AM PDT The latest event in Tom Clancy's The Division 2 has been delayed again. The Fairview Crew apparel event, which originally was scheduled to begin May 24, had been pushed back to June 2 - but another issue has cropped up, leading to another delay. Now Ubisoft says the MMORPG's Fairview Crew event will begin next week, June 7, thanks to a problem with the new backpack vanity item not working correctly. "We had to delay the apparel event as a major issue related to the new vanity item, the backpack, was found at the last minute," the Division 2 team says in a statement posted to Twitter. "The apparel event will start on Tuesday [June 7], and the backpack rewards will be granted once a new patch is deployed at a later date, during the apparel event." The Division 2's apparel events add new cosmetic outfit looks, usually a total of around 27 items, that players can earn in limited time event caches. To open the caches, players race to complete event objectives and projects and earn as many cache keys as possible during the event. | Valheim update aims to fix cloud saves and add Maypoles Posted: 03 Jun 2022 08:16 AM PDT The next Valheim update should prevent players from losing progress thanks to a pesky bug with Steam Cloud saving. Patch 0.208.5, which is now available on the Viking game's public test branch, adds a workaround and failsafe system to keep your save files safe, even when you're playing multiple Valheim accounts on the same PC. The patch also introduces some festive new Midsummer content, so start weaving some flower crowns now. Developer Iron Gate explains that players - especially players who were using multiple accounts on a single PC - have run into issues with losing progress thanks to a bug with Steam Cloud saves. To address this, the devs say they're creating some new folders for Cloud and local save files. Once this new patch arrives on the main branch, cloud saves will be stored in Steam's userdata folder. Save files for dedicated servers and multi-account PCs have a new save file location: folder labelled '_local' that's next to the old save file folder. Old saves will remain in that old save folder, but no new saves will be stored there. Iron Gate says that when you start an old local save with cloud saving enabled from now on, the old local file will be moved to the cloud, and a local backup will be created. | Apex Legends new guns “have to be sexy and strong,” says dev Posted: 03 Jun 2022 06:45 AM PDT The CAR SMG is among the best Apex Legends guns, and one of the FPS game's developers has spoken about the team's intent that Apex Legends new guns "should be fun" in response to a claim that the weapon is overpowered. Respawn's live balance designer John 'JayBiebs' Larson replied to a comment about the CAR's strength with a lengthy post explaining some of the design decisions that go into bringing new weapons to the battle royale game. In a Reddit thread discussing the CAR SMG, which is the newest Apex Legends weapon and was added in season 11, user Sairizard says they feel the gun is an example of power creep and claim that "Respawn are definitely not playing their own game." In response, Larson jokes, "1v1 me bro," before going into detail about the Respawn team's approach to new weapon balance. Larson begins by saying that "it makes sense to lean towards the strong side" when tuning new gear for release, explaining that the "hype new thing should be fun, and if it's fun to use, players get more reps in with it sooner," which makes assessing what makes a particular gun fun, strong, or frustrating for players much easier for Respawn's balance team. "Would rather release strong and nerf than release weak and buff," he adds. RELATED LINKS: Apex Legends characters guide, Apex Legends skins, Apex Legends map guide |
| Most of Sony’s State of Play games are coming to PC Posted: 03 Jun 2022 03:37 AM PDT If you're a PC gamer who watched the announcements at Sony's State of Play games showcase and were excited by the offerings, you're in luck - outside of the PSVR offerings, almost everything shown including the formerly Sony PlayStation exclusive series Spider-Man is coming to PC. We also have a Resident Evil 4 remake release date, some Street Fighter 6 gameplay, and a Final Fantasy 16 release window announcement and flashy new trailer. Sci-fi horror game The Callisto Protocol, from the original creators of Dead Space, got a brand new trailer and is set to release on December 2. Roller skating arena bloodsport game Rollerdrome, announced for an August 16 release, already has its own Steam page - as does 'dating action' anime game Eternights, which features a Persona-style calendar system that tasks you with deciding if you should spend your Fridays dating or dungeon crawling. We also got a Stray release date - the Cyberpunk cat adventure game was previously announced for PC, but we now know we'll be wandering around rain-slicked city streets and hiding in cardboard boxes as a kitty on July 19, courtesy of the Stray gameplay trailer. Atmospheric cycling road trip adventure Season: A Letter to the Future is also on Steam, with an autumn release window. |
| The best Diablo Immortal Necromancer build for PvP and PvE Posted: 03 Jun 2022 01:29 AM PDT If you're wondering what the best Necromancer build in Diablo Immortal is, it's little wonder. It seems like a self-explanatory class on the surface – dark mage summons dead people for battle – but Diablo Immortal's Necromancer class has a surprising amount of flexibility in how you send your foes into the great beyond. Despite being burdened with low mobility, the Necromancer excels in PvE and PvP combat. The Necromancer's skills cover a broad range of areas, including distance attacks and support skills. There's a good deal of flexibility in how you approach these skills too. You could opt for a support Necromancer, for example, or a master of summons who destroys all in their path. If you're playing with a Clan, make sure to consider how your build may complement your party members as well. This guide covers the best skills for your Necromancer and what kind of combat style to focus on for both PvE and PvP modes. We'll also cover which gems you should prioritize to boost those skills and get the most from one of Diablo Immortal's most unique classes. | Insomniac’s Spider-Man Remastered swings onto PC later this summer Posted: 02 Jun 2022 04:02 PM PDT Insomniac's web-slinging hero is coming to PC, Sony has announced during the June 2 State of Play, and you won't have to wait long to play it. The Spider-Man Remastered PC release date is set for August 12. Since this is the remastered version of Insomniac's spin on Spider-Man, you can likely expect the most recent graphical updates, including ray tracing, improved reflections, and the new face model for Peter Parker. In a separate blog post, Insomniac also confirmed Spider-Man: Miles Morales will release on PC sometime in the fall. While Sony announced the release date, the trailer made no mention of what platform we can expect the game to launch on. Given Sony's other PC ports have landed on Steam, though, it's a good bet to expect the same for Spider-Man Remastered. What kind of settings and other features Spider-Man Remastered may launch with remain to be seen. Spider-Man Remastered sets you loose in the vast urban playground of New York City with Spider-Man's impressive arsenal of mobility skills at your disposal. |
| Final Fantasy 16 release window announced, here’s a new trailer Posted: 03 Jun 2022 03:30 AM PDT The Final Fantasy 16 release date has narrowed to summer 2023, according to PlayStation's most recent State of Play livestream. We also got to see an exciting new trailer for the RPG game, and it's clear that developer Square Enix is going big on duels between the series' famous summoned monsters. The trailer, which you can view below, shows some of Final Fantasy's most enduring pocket monsters - called 'Eikons', this time round - facing each other in both cinematic sequences and new gameplay. In the latter, they sport health bars and the camera angle flits between side-on and dramatic third-person perspectives. At times it looks like something between a fighting game and a hack-'n'-slash action RPG, but with enormous, dramatic monsters. Ramuh, Ifrit, Phoenix, Shiva, Garuda, Odin, and Titan are all confirmed so far. Scurrying around beneath the stomping boots of all these giants are the humans of the story, who get much less airtime by comparison, but it's clear there's going to be a "child of fate" and at least one callous emperor who cares nothing for collateral damage. |
| Street Fighter 6 announced, and it’s coming to PC Posted: 02 Jun 2022 04:14 PM PDT Street Fighter 6 has been officially revealed, and it's coming out next year to consoles and PC via Steam. The flashy new trailer shows off a vibrant new art style for Street Fighter, some of the fighters we'll see on the roster, some surprising open-world gameplay, as well as the release window of 2023. The trailer kicks off with a shot in a Times Square-type intersection in Metro City, a place covered in massive digital billboards and bright colours. We cut to a gym, where Luke, a returning character from Street Fighter V, is practising on a heavy bag. The trailer also features appearances by Chun-Li, Ryu, and Jamie, a new character to the long-running series of fighting games. According to the official site, Jamie is an expert dancer who has also taken on the role of peacekeeper in his neighborhood of Chinatown. Intriguingly, the trailer also includes a couple segments of what appears to be open-world gameplay, where a hooded fighter explores Metro City by climbing ladders and entering breakdancing contests. |
| Resident Evil 4 remake release date announced Posted: 02 Jun 2022 04:24 PM PDT The Resident Evil 4 remake now has an official release date. Sony and Capcom revealed that the remake of Resident Evil 4 will launch March 24, 2023, and they showed off a first official look at the horror game's gameplay during Sony's State of Play. The trailer was, as is typical of the Resident Evil series, oozing with atmosphere, and included shots of Leon Kennedy walking along a trail toward the game's village, as well as a shot from his ride on the train. The game has been completely rebuilt, and the brief shots of gameplay show off some of the new tech Capcom will be bringing to bear in the remake. We'd heard rumours about a coming reveal for the Resident Evil 4 last year ahead of Gamescom, but it seems Capcom needed a bit more time to get all of las plagas positioned correctly for maximum scares. | Bungie responds to Destiny 2 Rift backlash, buffs Solar Warlocks Posted: 02 Jun 2022 01:38 PM PDT The Solar Warlock is getting a significant overhaul, Bungie has announced in This Week At Bungie, and it might take some of the sting out of Rift matches in the Iron Banner. While the Destiny 2 developer acknowledges the community's discontent with the MMO game's Rift activity, it looks like the only changes on the horizon are meant for fixing the Iron Banner's reputation issues. Players reported on Reddit that they received minimal – or no – reputation increase after matches, but the next update lets you earn reputation bonuses for playing matches, winning, and wearing a five-piece set of Iron Banner armor. The June 2 TWAB mentions no changes to the speed of Rift matches or even the bugs players say make the activity nearly unplayable at times. Instead, the team recommends playing the objective to get the most out of the activity. What it does mention is a set of extensive changes planned for Solar subclasses, buffing healing abilities for Solar Warlocks and making Solar Titans more interesting in combat. "We'd much rather ship something a little too spicy than something bland that makes a bad first impression. I think with Solar 3.0, we landed somewhere in the middle, and the team feels very passionately that this is the wrong place to be," Kevin Yane, Bungie's Sandbox Discipline lead, says in the TWAB update.
