Review: Pocky & Rocky Reshrined Keeps Running and Gunning

Posted: 29 Jun 2022 12:00 PM PDT

Pocky & Rocky Reshrined pays tribute to the original SNES game while slightly expanding on the adventure, but there are a few missteps

Pocky & Rocky is back and, well, it is a slightly different take on a game people might be familiar with. It is all about playing with a familiar formula and adding to it. However, while this is definitely the run-and-gun game people remember, there are also some elements that feel like they're holding the overall experience back.

Pocky & Rocky Reshrined involves shrine maiden Pocky and Rocky the tanuki dealing with Black Mantle and his yokai minions. The duo are responsible for figuring out how to save the day over the course of eight stages. Though really, the plot is awkward and feels unnecessary. It can also come across as a bit stilted, due to the storytelling decisions and localization. But given the nature of the series and this installment, you don't really need to pay attention to the backstory. It all serves as an excuse to keep fighting through various levels.

Pocky & Rocky Reshrined pays tribute to the original SNES game while slightly expanding on the adventure, but there are a few missteps

Pocky & Rocky Reshrined is a run-and-gun game. You'll control one of the two lead characters, though it is also possible to be Ame-no-Uzume, Hotaru Gozen, and Ikazuchi during the adventure. You can freely move your character around the screen. As you progress and defeat certain enemies and boxes, you'll also power-up your projectiles. An additional move allows you to send certain sorts of enemy shots back at them. Survival becomes a delicate balance of knowing when to use certain sorts of attacks, collecting power-ups when you can, and recognizing the sorts of patterns various foes use when they attack.

Story implementation aside, there are a number of design decisions that are quite questionable. The first being that Pocky & Rocky Reshrined's multiplayer isn't immediately unlocked. If you want to play with someone else, you have to unlock Free Mode. Which means you have to beat the single-player Story Mode or get 10,000 coins in Story Mode. That's incredibly frustrating. Especially since, in the original SNES game, you could immediately hop in alone or with someone else.

The other one is that the easiest difficulty option is locked. Which is fine. I had no trouble getting through Pocky & Rocky Reshrined on Normal. But it seems like it would have been wiser to have Extra Easy immediately available for newcomers. Instead, someone has to earn 3,000 coins to open up that option. It would have made more sense, in my opinion, to put the Hard difficulty option behind that 3,000 coin wall.

Pocky & Rocky Reshrined also maintains the same sort of control scheme as the original. Which makes sense, given it is essentially an enhanced remake. But there's been a lot of progress in the run-and-gun realm since. This means you'll shoot in whichever direction you're aiming. I found it frustrating, since it meant needing to constantly move and readjust to ensure my aim would be true or I'd properly reflect certain shots. It isn't a game-breaker, to be certain. But when you get accustomed to more modern control schemes, it means relearning how to play.

Pocky & Rocky Reshrined pays tribute to the original SNES game while slightly expanding on the adventure, but there are a few missteps

Still, while some gameplay elements could use some tweaking, the atmosphere is great. Pocky & Rocky Reshrined looks incredible. The spritework is fantastic. It also has a fantastic soundtrack. It calls back to the chiptune original to create a wonderful sense of ambiance. I'd say its music is perhaps my favorite part.

As far as a revival goes, Pocky & Rocky Reshrined is fine. It offers an opportunity for a new audience to experience the run-and-gun game. It looks fantastic. It also does a good job of paying tribute to the original SNES game while slightly expanding on the adventure. But it also doesn't feel especially considerate of the player. It would have been more convenient to make the additional difficulty level and free mode immediately available. Still, it's entertaining enough.

Pocky & Rocky Reshrined is available for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. There are also Collector's and Limited Edition versions of it available through Gamesrocket.

New Legend of Mana Anime Trailer Shows Off Its Characters

New Legend of Mana Anime Video Shows Off Its Characters

There's a new Legend of Mana: The Teardrop Crystal anime trailer, and this video shows off its cast of characters and pins down a release window. While it previously had a tentative 2022 window, it is now confirmed to appear in October 2022. The new footage also shows off many familiar faces. Even though this story will follow the male version of the avatar, named Shiloh, and its Jumi arc, other people will appear too.

Of course, Elazul and Pearl feature prominently in the video. Elazul is the Jumi Knight who journeys alongside Pearl to find other members of the Jumi. That's a race of people who have a stone embedded into their chests tied to their health and well-being. We also see Shiloh talk about things with Lil' Cactus, who then records it in a diary. Bud and Lisa appear and refer to Shiloh as their "master." (In-game, they join after The Two Sorcerers event.) We also see Duelle and a Sproutling. At the very end, Seraphina, the female version of the protagonist, talking to a fairy. This teaser could mean another arc from the game may get an anime adaptation.

As a reminder, the last trailer for this adaptation appeared back in April 2022.

The Legend of Mana: The Teardrop Crystal anime will air in October 2022.

He also can inflict Null Follow-Up if allies are nearby due to it. His new passive is Chivalry. It enables Canto for him and also inflicts Atk/Spd/Def-5 on enemies whose health is over 50%. The standard version of Xander appeared as a Grand Hero Battle unit.

Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak to Add Shagaru Magala, Furious Rajang

Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak Shagaru Magala

Capcom has revealed the last remaining monsters for the upcoming Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak expansion, including Shagaru Magala. The announcement also revealed several new and returning monster variants, such as the Furious Rajang and Scorned Magnamalo. This gives fans a better idea of what to expect in terms of content for the next few months, once Sunbreak releases later this week.

One key reveal of the announcement is the Shagaru Magala. As the name suggests, the six-limbed, winged Elder dragon is the adult form of the Gore Magala. The monster has appeared in earlier Monster Hunter titles, making its debut in Monster Hunter 4. The trailer gives a brief glimpse of the monster's movements and attacks.

Furthermore, new and returning monster variants are set to appear both on Sunbreak's launch, as well as in the coming months. On launch, Capcom is bringing back the Furious Rajang, as well as adding a new Scorned Magnamalo variant. While Furious Rajang has been a staple in the Monster Hunter series for some time, the Scorned Magnamalo is new. Unlike its normal form, the Scorned Magnamalo is equipped with larger arm blades and is constantly covered in hellfire.

In August, the Seething Bazelgeuse will join the roster. The Bazelgeuse variant will join alongside the previously announced Lucent Nargacuga.

Review: Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Asks ‘What If’

Posted: 28 Jun 2022 12:00 PM PDT

Review: Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Asks What If Three Houses Musou

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is a Musou game that asks a lot of "what ifs." What if Byleth didn't come to Garreg Mach as a teacher? What if someone else ended up aiding Claude, Dimitri, and Edelgard when the three encountered bandits? What if, instead of a traditional tactical game like Three Houses, Three Hopes was a more active one? The answers to all of them, perhaps not shockingly, are rather fascinating.

Shez is a mercenary. Who were they working for? It doesn't really matter. What does is that they face the Ashen Demon Byleth and Jeralt's mercenary company on a battlefield, and things go awry. Everyone Shez worked with is killed, and they nearly fall. However, a being named Arval's fate ends up intertwined with theirs. This grants them extraordinary power. It also leaves the two with a mission. That is, get revenge on Byleth. However, as they go about finding Jeralt's group again, they end up in the same position as Byleth did in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. That is, they wind up at Garreg Mach and tied to one of the three houses. However, in this case Shez is a student alongside the other characters, and their fate intertwines with Claude's, Dimitri's, or Edelgard's.

Review: Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Asks What If Three Houses Musou

What's intriguing about Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is the alternative history it offers compared to the original Three Houses. Because Shez replaces Byleth as the "main" character, so many things also change. Certain character behave differently. Events we saw in the academy before don't go as "planned." It's fascinating. Which isn't to say it makes one telling "right" or the other "wrong." It's a case of "what if." As for how the stories compare, it will depend on the person. I think I liked the Golden Deer storyline in Three Houses more than the one in Three Hopes. But both have their own merits. Though given how much political talk and plot comes up, I sort of feel like someone coming into Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes that didn't play Three Houses will be a little lost.

As a Musou game, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is a more active experience than the traditional installments. When you head into the field, you'll see a map with varying objectives. More will be added as you play, as well as side-quests. You will be able to directly control four of the characters you assign to the fight. (Though in some cases, an additional four can also be deployed as unplayable allies.) When in the field, you'll button-mash to attack units. Tasks tend to involve named units. Their guard will often need to be broken to deal more devastating damage and defeat them. Also, you'll need to capture certain points, guard allies, open closed spaces, and even go after chests.

Lorenz

What I really appreciated about Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is how much more strategic it feels than other Musou games. The weapon triangle system is in full effect, and there is a noticeable difference in damage when you play to characters' strengths. Obtaining extra abilities via changing classes also visibly affects everything. The game very much encourages you to constantly bring up the menu in a fight to direct characters you aren't controlling or who appear as NPCs on a map to handle certain objectives. Getting strategy points to implement certain actions to alter a chapter's major battle, perhaps by making an enemy commander recruitable or to add extra NPC allies, is also pretty great. Not to mention the Adjutant system is in place to add partners.

Though, I will say that the tutorials are sometimes not handled well. First, there are a lot of them. Which can be handy! Some people might not be accustomed to Musou games, and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes' handholding could assist with that. But also, they can be a little overbearing. Especially when you're over five hours in and still seeing them. I also felt like some of the tutorials didn't do as good of a job explaining things. The aforementioned Adjutant system is a good example. I almost felt like it was more of an aside than anything, and I had to look up online to figure out how to actually properly implement it.

Review: Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes Asks 'What If'

There are also a number of general quality of life changes here, from what appeared in past Musou games and the original Fire Emblem Warriors. Shez can fast-travel a limited number of times in-battle. It definitely helps with achieving goals. Getting characters on par with each other is fairly easy, due to the training facilities and leveling options. You're constantly getting rewarded for actions, which also helps with getting people prepared for battle. It's very easy to control. Even though it might eventually wear on the hands a bit, I didn't feel like it is as much of a button-masher as other installments.

I also loved how much Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes draws from Three Houses. The support system remains in place. Characters get closer via gifts, expeditions, performing chores, eating together, training together and fighting together. Which, well, happened in the original game too! There is an optional permadeath option, which kicks in after the fourth chapter. A morale system is in play. There is also the aforementioned class and ability system, with certain items needed to take "tests" for more advanced roles. Not to mention that, like Three Houses, there are multiple routes to take. As I played it, I felt like it understood why people enjoyed the original game and tried to pay tribute to that.

Claude

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is the sort of Musou game that not only gets what is special about Fire Emblem in general, but about Three Houses specifically. It's a very involved title. The story gets quite detailed. So much so that folks who don't have that Three Houses experience might not get the most out of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. But it's generally an incredibly solid Musou game and a lot of fun if you are aware of everything going on.

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is available for the Nintendo Switch.
