GamerGate 2? Microsoft Banning Minecraft Server Accounts for Thought Crime

Posted: 23 Jul 2022 04:10 PM PDT

Big Tech is about to repeat a big mistake.

Microsoft has actively sought to increase its control of privately owned Minecraft servers since it acquired the game in 2014.

Last month, the tech giant began cryptographically tying messages to accounts, setting the stage for universal moderation. In the upcoming 1.19.1 update, any account which violates the Community Guidelines may be banned from ALL online servers — Public or private.

The long and short of it is that a megacorp is asserting the power to ban you for life from a game you bought for how you conduct yourself in your own home.

It's been almost a decade since the first #GamerGate. The vidya oligarchs are overdue for a sharp lesson in what happens when they piss off extremely online, tech savvy autists.

And let this be another lesson to counterculture artists. Do not sign your rights away to the enemy. Unless you want to see your life's work bastardized and weaponized against your audience.

And let it serve as a reminder to consumers not to pay people who hate you.

In the meantime, there's a petition against Microsoft's Minecraft censorship. Make sure you uncheck the "Show my name" box, and sign it here.

John Cleese Says “Wokeness” is Having a ‘Disastrous Effect’ on Comedy

Posted: 23 Jul 2022 01:20 PM PDT

John Cleese, one of the creators of the classic comedy troupe Monty Python’s Flying Circus, has once more denounced wokeness as a destructive force that’s having a “disastrous effect” on humor in our culture. Cleese believes it is truly the enemy of all artistic creativity.

As reported by David Ng of Breitbart, during the recent Las Vegas FreedomFest conference, the British performer responded to a question in an interview with Fox News, asking whether comedians would be allowed to be funny in 2022.

Cleese said, “No.”

There's always been limitations on what they're allowed to say," Cleese said, citing government censors in centuries past.

"But I think it's particularly worrying at the moment because you can only create in an atmosphere of freedom, where you're not checking everything you say critically before you move on. What you have to be able to do is to build without knowing where you're going because you've never been there before."

He continued: "That's what creativity is — you have to be allowed to build. And a lot of comedians now are sitting there and when they think of something, they say something like, 'Can I get away with it? I don't think so. So and so got into trouble, and he said that, oh, she said that.' You see what I mean? And that's the death of creativity."

Cleese said wokeness and creativity are by nature antagonistic to each other.

"You can do the creation and then criticize it, but you can't do them at the same time. So if you're worried about offending people and constantly thinking of that, you are not going to be very creative. So I think it has a disastrous effect."

Cleese said late-night comedy shows in the U.S. are now over-politicized.

The in-studio audiences are  "more obviously politically aligned than it used to be," he said.

The atmosphere in comedy is much more politicized today, including late-night comedy, the culture warrior and comedian said.

“It wasn’t like this when I first got to America,” Cleese said, according to Fox News. “When I first got to America in the 60s… two things happened. First of all, I very much admired the cross-the-aisle friendships and thought we don’t have that in England. We have real battles between the Tories and the Labour, but in America there seems to be these- and this was destroyed by Newt Gingrich, quite deliberately, for purposes of power. I think that’s a tragedy.”

Enjoy this recent interview where he obliterates an interviewer that disagrees with his feelings about being “woke.”

Amber Heard Appeals Loss to Johnny Depp in Defamation Trial

Posted: 23 Jul 2022 11:15 AM PDT

After previously failing to convince a Virginia judge to overturn the $10 million judgment handed down against her in favor of Johnny Depp, Aquaman actress Amber Heard is now formally appealing the defamation trial judgement.

"We believe the court made errors that prevented a just and fair verdict consistent with the First Amendment. We are therefore appealing the verdict," Heard rep told TMZ. "While we realize today's filing will ignite the Twitter bonfires, there are steps we need to take to ensure both fairness and justice."

Heard’s attorneys submitted the necessary paperwork on Thursday in order to appeal the $10.3 million verdict that a jury said she owed the Pirates of the Caribbean actor. Heard had also submitted a motion for a new trial earlier this month, alleging that one of the jurors had appeared in court when it was actually his father who had been served with the jury summons. Nevertheless, the motion was denied by the judge.

"The jury listened to the extensive evidence presented during the six-week trial and came to a clear and unanimous verdict that the defendant herself defamed Mr. Depp in multiple instances. We remain confident in our case and that this verdict will stand," Johnny Depp’s spokesperson shared with TMZ.

As we’ve reported extensively, Jonny Depp sued Amber Heard for $50 million, alleging that her account of experiencing domestic abuse in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed damaged his ability to make movies. After determining that Heard had defamed Depp and “acted with actual malice,” the jury found in Depp’s favor on all three of his defamation allegations, awarding him $10 million in compensatory damages.

Heard was given $2 million in compensatory damages after the jury concluded in favor of one of her two claims. Elaine Charlson Bredehoft, Heard’s primary attorney, now claims that the actress is “absolutely not” able to pay the millions of dollars in damages she owes her ex-husband. Heard is currently believed to be broke following extravagant spending and rising legal costs.

Heard’s insurance company, New York Marine and General Insurance Co., is also suing her, claiming that none of the $8.3 million in losses Heard owes Depp are covered by the company’s insurance policy because of the defamation charges being proven. Heard is also currently under investigation for smuggling and perjury in Australia.

Can it get any worse for Amber?

Nintendo Buys Animation Studio in Preparation for Chris Pratt as Mario

Posted: 23 Jul 2022 08:34 AM PDT

Video game giant Nintendo (who probably still make trading cards today the say way they originally began in the late 19th century) has taken ownership of a CG animation studio, according to Digital Trends:

Nintendo has announced that is acquiring the CG production company Dynamo Pictures and is renaming it Nintendo Pictures. […]

Nintendo is currently working on a Mario animated movie starring Chris Pratt with Illumination, and it is set to release on April 7, 2023 in North America and April 28 in Japan. Nintendo pictures will likely be involved with future films that Nintendo plays a part in making as well as other GC content that Nintendo needs.

To my knowledge, Nintendo’s far from a PC business, so maybe this could make a great venture and expansion of their projects. And I’d rather see a cartoon based on Mario than the live action movie made in 1993, which fared very poorly. There’s just so many sci-fi stories that would work far better in animation than live action.

Looking forward to this.

Kurt Russell & Son Wyatt Join Cast of Legendary’s Godzilla Series

Posted: 23 Jul 2022 05:25 AM PDT

Apple TV+ and Legendary Television's Godzilla series is becoming a (Russell) family affair.

THR reports that Kurt and Wyatt Russell have been cast in the series, which is set in the world of Legendary's Monsterverse franchise. Details on their roles are being kept quiet at the moment.

The father and son join a cast that also includes Pachinko star Anna Sawai, Ren Watabe, Kiersey Clemons, Joe Tippett and Elisa Lasowski.

The untitled series is set in the aftermath of the battle between Godzilla and the Titans that decimated San Francisco (as depicted in 2014's Godzilla, which launched the film franchise). It will follow a family's journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.

Chris Black (Outcast, Star Trek: Enterprise) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye) co-created the series, with Black serving as showrunner. Matt Shakman (WandaVision) is set to direct the first two episodes. All three will executive produce along with Safehouse Pictures' Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell, as well as Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita of Toho Co. Ltd., which owns Godzilla and other monster characters and has licensed them to Legendary.
