An Italian Restaurant based on Millennium Square in Sheffield City Centre, that boasts an open kitchen, cocktail bar and large terrace featuring a fully retractable roof for that more alfresco experience whatever the weather. Piccolino offers a menu of Italian classics with a modern twist incorporating seasonal produce, Italian cheeses, meat and seafood, delivering classic Italian flavours. A nice restaurant whatever your occasion.
We enjoyed a visit to Piccolino recently, my first dining experience at this restaurant. A number of people I know from Sheffield had said good things about their experiences here and I also had a voucher to use from signing up to the Club Individual app and dining at another of the "Individual Restaurants" collections of restaurants; Restaurant Bar & Grill in Leeds. For a Wednesday evening, the place was full and lively with large groups of people dining.
The menu is HUGE (wouldn't fit on the table lol) but there are lots of tasty-sounding dishes to choose from. I feel the price point here is fairly high compared to more local and family-run, authentic restaurants I have recently visited, but is expected of a city centre restaurant with a more modern vibe. Service was ok, unfortunately nothing special. When we chose our dishes I said we would probably be sharing our courses between us, but I think the waitress thought that we wanted all 4 dishes to come at the same time. In the end this wasn't a problem and we quite enjoyed picking at everything at our leisure, and everything was hot so nothing got left to go cold.
For "starters" we shared the Bruschetta al Pomodoro and Arancini Alla Carbonara. The bruschetta was nice, not the best I have had though. The tomatoes were cut really small and the bread thin so the topping just fell off the bread and it was very messy to eat. I wasn't getting the juiciness and freshness that I expected. The arancini were faultless though, really good and delicious.
For our "mains" we shared Casarecce Con Pollo (Grilled Chicken, Seasonal Vegetables, Cream, Matured Italian cheese and pine nuts) and Paccheri All'Amatriciana (Pork cheek guanciale, vine ripened cherry tomatoes, chilli & basil). I absolutely loved the chicken pasta dish. Sometimes I just want a nice chicken pasta with lots of veg in it and this hit that spot perfectly. It was lovely and creamy but also refreshing due to the vegetables. There was lots of it but I forced every last bite down because it was so delicious. The pork cheek pasta was also delicious and was Ben's favourite. The hint of chilli was lovely but could have been stronger for us spice fans. It was all cooked very well.
We did enjoy our visit here and would recommend to anyone looking for a slightly high end, city centre Italian Restaurant. Our bill came to £70 for 4 courses and 2 drinks which is expected for this area, but definitely pricey compared to other great Italian restaurants on the outskirts of the city. BUT saying that we did really enjoy the food here and I believe it will continue to be a popular choice for many in the City Centre.
