You won't need to go far for some really decent grub in Bucharest, that's for sure! Meat lovers especially will find lots of great dishes to choose from, however there is something for everyone with a fair few Vegan Cafes and restaurants around. I won't go into too much details of specific restaurants/cafes to try as there's too many, but I can give you some dishes I think you should definitely order if travelling to Bucharest/Romania…
One Traditional Romanian cuisine I have to recommend is Mici (pronounced "meech") which are homemade, garlicky, meaty sausages and are usually served with mustard, fresh chilli and bread. These go perfectly with a cold beer of course. Ben fell in love with these juicy, tasty things. These sausages are grilled ground meat rolls made from a mixture of beef and lamb and pork, with spices such as garlic, black pepper, thyme, coriander, anise, and sometimes a touch of paprika. A must try. We would recommend giving a restaurant/venue in the centre a visit called Hanu'Lui Manuc - this is beautiful old Inn with stables/courtyard originating from the 1800s that now houses a restaurant and bar, a small market and various events.
Another must; this time for dessert lovers is Papanasi (pronounced "papanash") which is Traditional Romanian fried doughnuts made with soft cheese and topped with sour cream and cherry jam. As someone with a sweet tooth, these were such an indulgent treat. The donuts were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. Very good - definitely a knife and fork job!
Aside from these, you'll find lots of stacked burgers, meat platters (most tend to come with polenta which I wasn't a big fan of in all honesty), lots of vegans choices as well, fresh salads, pastry counters serving all manner of freshly baked delights. It really is a great city for foodies.
Oh and for beer lovers, 400ml lagers were anything from £2.20 - £3.50 now I call that a bargain!!
Have you visited Bucharest before? Or do you have this on your list to visit? Where else have you travelled to that is a foodies dream?
