Heavy Metal Mag Beclowns Self on Social Media After Pushback

Comic book fans of the original 80’s animated film Heavy Metal had been looking forward to another limited series comic starring ‘Taarna’, the film’s main protagonist. But reader who expressed their disappointment with the direction the comic was taking after seeing a recently revealed cover of the publisher's six-issue miniseries from writer Stephanie Phillips, were met with ridicule and disdain by the magazine’s social media account.

Taarna is normally suited up in a bikini armor similar to Red Sonja, but that changed in Taarna #5, where she donned a full suit of armor. Writer Stephanie Phillips chatted recently about her redesigning Taarna’s new battle armor for issues #5 and #6.

"One really cool element to the finale was getting to design new battle armor for Taarna. Al [Barrionuevo] and Bryan [Valenza] created some of the coolest armor for Taarna that I hope we get to see beyond the issues we worked on together. It's such a cool look. Both Al and Bryan are incredibly talented and a great team to close out the story with."

Fans were not impressed and expressed their displeasure on Instagram, where the person running Heavy Metal’s account was quick to respond with ridicule and mockery.

The insults weren’t just relegated to Instagram. When called out on Twitter, the social media director doubled-down on the salt.

Does this make you confident in the direction of Heavy Metal? Can they correct this? Will there be an opening soon for a social media director at the publisher now being run by Tim Seeley?

Founder of BOOM! Studios Appointed Chairman of the Board

Posted: 29 May 2021 08:00 AM PDT

BOOM! Studios is pleased to announce that our Founder and CEO, Ross Richie, has been appointed Chairman of the Board by the company's Board of Directors.

In this new role, Mr. Richie will continue to provide vision and strategy for the company, targeting new business activities and arrangements to take the company to its next stage.

"While it's difficult to shift away from being hands-on in the daily activity of the company, this new role will allow me to concentrate more deeply on trailblazing, which is my greatest passion," said Mr. Richie. "BOOM! Studios has tremendous momentum in every facet of our business, which coupled with my confidence in the strong team I've built to manage the daily operations of the company, means there's no better time for me to make this transition to create new opportunities. We've built the largest independently owned library of comics properties in America together, and the opportunities ahead are thrilling."

Scott Lenet, who is stepping down as Chairman of the Board after serving in that role for the past decade, commented: "I'm very proud of Ross, having seen how he has built BOOM! from the ground up, recruited a world-class team, and created one of the most innovative and creator-friendly models in media. It's been an honor being Ross' partner in building the company, and I continue to expect great things from Ross and BOOM! as he grows into this next leadership role. It goes without saying that I look forward to continuing to work with him on the Board."

Mr. Richie's transition from the CEO role to Chairman of the Board will move him out of day-to-day management. The leadership of the company will remain in the hands of its respected and veteran management team – Stephen Christy (President, Development), Matt Gagnon (Editor-in-Chief), Joy Huffman (CFO), and Filip Sablik (President, Publishing & Marketing) – each of whom will remain in their respective roles.

Under Richie's 16 year tenure as CEO the company has won "Publisher of the Year" from Diamond Comic Distributors 9 times, multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards, and published BRZRKR, the best-selling comic book in comic book shops in the past 29 years. Currently in a first-look deal for television with Netflix, BOOM! is producing R.L. Stine TV series Just Beyond for Disney+ and Mech Cadets for Netflix, with over 24 media projects in active development.

Bite Sized Archie, the first-ever webcomic series from Archie Comics, is expanding its online presence with a new syndication deal with digital comics app Tinyview and the upcoming release of the first in a series of digital collections on ComiXology.

“We created Bite Sized Archie because we were looking for a new way to deliver funny and relevant comics content directly to our dedicated fans on social media,” said writer and Archie Comics Director of Publicity & Social Media Ron Cacace. “We’re continually amazed and humbled by the positive feedback from readers of all ages. And getting to add the series to a platform like Tinyview, where a whole new audience will be able to follow along weekly alongside our current readers on social media, it’s such a wonderful feeling and we’re so grateful for the opportunity.”

“I never would have thought that my random lunch break doodles of Archie and Jughead would set the style for the company’s first ever web comic series,” said artist and Archie Comics Art Director Vincent Lovallo. “I’m very grateful to Ron, my comrade in comics, who pushed the concept for the series forward and continues to deliver smart, relevant, and fun stories that anyone can enjoy.”

New and previously published editions of Bite Sized Archie will continue to be posted every Friday on the Archie Comics social media pages, while Tinyview users will get a special early preview on Thursday evenings. All previously released and upcoming editions of Bite Sized Archie will be available on the Tinyview platform for web, iOS and Android, and adapted for its vertical-scroll format. Bite Sized Archie joins a diverse assortment of popular webcomic series on the platform, which specializes in delivering short bursts of comics content directly to readers in an easy-to-read format and is the first addition from a major American comics publisher on the service.
