New World review in progress – a flawed, but promising MMO Posted: 01 Oct 2021 12:43 PM PDT After a few dozen hours in New World I still feel like a stranded traveller, newly washed up on the beaches of Aeternum. I've managed to skirt the mammoth queue times for long enough now to get a feel for Amazon Games' foray into the massively multiplayer genre, and that feeling can pretty much be summed up with a shrug and a '...yeah, it's alright'. Will New World scratch that itch you've got in the back of your brain for a new MMO in a pretty world filled with life and stuff to do? Definitely. Will you be gasping in awe wondering how Amazon managed to reinvigorate the genre? Probably not. Friends have asked me about New World's mechanics during my playtime and I've found myself giving a disclaimer every time. The combat feels good for an MMO. The crafting is rewarding for an MMO. The world is gorgeous for an MMO. Sure, the more grounded combat is definitely a nice addition, but on the whole there doesn't seem to be much setting New World apart from its contemporaries other than its admittedly very pretty setting and aesthetic. I haven't had much opportunity to experience PvP combat so far other than a couple of duels - not many players are flagged for open-world combat on my server - so PvE is the only real chance I've had to try out New World's action-combat system. Other than the odd bit of server lag, it feels pretty tight, and the experience varies dramatically depending on which weapon you're using. The greataxe's swing is meaty and impactful, but somehow the greathammer's size belies its range - it feels like you've got to get close enough to touch your opponent's eyelashes. The bow feels meek and lacklustre, but the rifle fires with a satisfying pop and little plume of gunsmoke that other players can see around you. My current favourite weapon is a high-level hatchet I found in a crate, which has a hefty strength bonus. I felt swift and nimble darting around flailing with my swings as my friend aimed headshots with his rifle. Each of New World's weapon types are leveled separately to your main level, so you're encouraged with your introductory loot drops to try out a few. Euro Truck Simulator 2 and ATS are both getting multiplayer mod support Posted: 01 Oct 2021 11:32 AM PDT SCS Software's trucking simulators have had robust support from modders for ages, including a massively-multiplayer online mode with TruckersMP. Official multiplayer support came to American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2 earlier this year, and while that implementation is quite different than the one modders built, it offers its own key advantages. Soon, those advantages will include support for even more mods. Mod support for the Convoy multiplayer mode will go live in patch 1.42 for both ETS2 and ATS, and it's already available for testing in an open beta. As of this update, the server browser will now show you which - if any - mods are required for a given session. If they're available from the Steam Workshop, you'll be able to download them directly via an overlay without even needing to exit the game. "We expect a majority of popular modifications to work from the get-go with this update, however, there may be some compatibility issues with others," the devs say in the announcement. There are some minor caveats, too - many sound mods will only play for local users, for example, so you won't be able to impress your friends with your custom truck horns. A new online tool provides detailed accessibility info for disabled gamers Posted: 01 Oct 2021 10:48 AM PDT A new online tool has launched today that provides detailed accessibility information on a growing list of modern games. The Accessible Games Database, created by games accessibility platform DAGERSystem, allows users to select the accessibility options they need and then view a list of games that include those features. Currently, the Accessible Games Database includes information on 141 games, and includes filters for more than 70 accessibility features. There are additional filters to narrow down the list to show only games from specific publishers or in specific genres, and you can select ESRB ratings as well. Say you want an open-world game that includes screen filters for deuteranopia, a form of red-green colourblindness. You'd add those filters to the list on the left side of the Accessible Games Database landing page, and you'd see that both Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077 fit the bill. Maybe you want an RTS game that lets you pause the gameplay and enable subtitles - the database will tell you that Halo Wars, Halo Wars 2, and Pikmin 3 Deluxe include all of those features. Here’s where Xur is in Destiny 2 today – Beyond Light, but not beyond Xur Posted: 01 Oct 2021 10:06 AM PDT Xûr is Destiny 2's Exotic gear merchant. He appears every weekend to sell the game's most coveted items in exchange for Legendary shards, but if you're a casual player with limited shards to spend, it can be hard to know which of his wares is most worth your investment. That's where we come in. As of June 12, 2020, it appears that Xûr is back to providing random rolls - so the Exotic merchant is providing more excitement than he has in a long time. Xûr appears every Friday at 10am PDT / 1pm EDT / 6pm BST, and will stick around until the Tuesday reset. We'll update this guide shortly after he arrives, so if you're reading this, you need only read on to learn where he is, and which are the best items he's selling this week. Now we're in Beyond Light territory, but Xûr's first appearances have been at the usual spots - so maybe don't expect too many surprises from the merchant in the new year of Destiny content. Konami promises fixes as eFootball 2022 becomes the worst-reviewed game on Steam Posted: 01 Oct 2021 09:31 AM PDT eFootball 2022 is now the worst-reviewed game on Steam. Worse than the XIII remake. Worse than those hentai games. The launch has been a disaster, and all players have been able to talk about is the volume of absurd bugs and glitches they've run into. (Hey, at least it's free, right?) Now Konami says "we are very sorry for the problems", and promises a series of updates and improvements to come. "After the release of eFootball 2022," Konami says in a tweet, "we have received lots of feedback and requests regarding game balance that includes pass speed and defence operation. We would also like to acknowledge that there have been reports of problems users have experienced with cutscenes, facial expressions, movements of players, and the behaviour of the ball." The devs are working on an update for October, "while receiving further opinions through questionnaires to our users". The team promises that the game "will be continuously updated", with "consistent" new content and improvements to quality. |
Where to get New World gems and how to use them Posted: 01 Oct 2021 09:27 AM PDT Want to know where to find New World gems? When it comes to creating the best New World PvP builds or PvE builds, gems can boost your stats and make that build even stronger. For example, gems such as the carnelian are great for tank builds, while fire staff builds benefit significantly from an equipped ruby. But finding them in the first place? That's the tricky bit. They don't turn up reliably - instead, New World gems occasionally appear as rare drops whenever you mine certain minerals in the world. Fortunately, there are ways to boost your chance to find gems, but without these luck-enhancing items, your search may well be fruitless. Thankfully, so long as you're prepared to go into expeditions, there is a different way to get New World gems. This guide will explain where to find New World gems and what items you need to equip to increase your chances of finding them. We'll also go through how to refine gemstones and what each gem does when you equip them for your loadout. RELATED LINKS: New World system requirements, New World factions, New World release date |
Best gaming laptop in 2021 – play PC games while you travel Posted: 01 Oct 2021 10:09 AM PDT While the perfect way to play the best PC games is on a full-sized desktop, sometimes size constraints or a nomadic lifestyle make a gaming laptop a great alternative, ensuring you get PC gaming quality wherever you go. However, choosing the perfect gaming laptop takes a lot of commitment. When you build a gaming PC you can swap out parts later if you want an upgrade. Because laptops often feature bespoke components and aren't designed to be tinkered with, it isn't as simple as picking out the best graphics card and best gaming CPU to suit your personal needs. Not only is there less customisation, but you have to look at other laptop-exclusive requirements, such as battery life, screen size, resolution, build quality, and aftermarket care. With the recent arrival of Nvidia's mobile RTX 30 series cards and AMD's new mobile CPUs and GPUs, the latest gaming laptops are becoming just as good, if not better than the best gaming PC builds. We've come up with our picks for the best laptop for gaming in 2021, whether you're wanting to play triple-a blockbusters like Watch Dogs: Legion, or just want a laptop that can crank up the frames in Fortnite. Six strategy games like Age of Empires Posted: 01 Oct 2021 08:52 AM PDT Let's talk about games like Age of Empires. Ensemble's classic set a gold standard in RTS game design that has had few competitors, most of which hail from contemporary challengers such as Command and Conquer or Starcraft. Since these halcyon days, no newcomer has really managed to topple these titans from their gilded thrones. Even the creators of Age of Empires were reluctant to challenge the series' own legacy, with a fourth game finally coming later this year in October, 16 years after the release of Age of Empires III. If you can't wait for Age of Empires IV and are looking for something similar, we've thrown together a quick guide on five strategy games that we think are pretty neat, and follow the same formula. We've not included titles such as Command and Conquer or Starcraft II, because while these games are RTS titles they are also very informed by their respective settings and differ in key ways. Age of Empires is first and foremost an historical strategy game, so with only a couple of exceptions we're looking at RTS games that also use this as a starting point. Posted: 01 Oct 2021 08:09 AM PDT Strategy games are no longer as niche as they used to be, but they still don't command the attention of gamers at large in the same way that FPS games or other multiplayer games can. As such, there are few titans to look to as the genre's key pillars, but you can definitely point to Firaxis' Civilization, Creative Assembly's Total War, and Paradox's spread of grand strategy games as such beacons. If you're the kind of player who enjoys a good chart, such as the ones that can be found on SteamDB, you might see Civilization VI and Total War: Warhammer II sitting pretty high up the list of most-played games on Steam (looking at current and daily peaks). But you might also be surprised to learn that, when viewed in the context series as a whole, the picture of which strategy games are more popular overall changes quite a bit. User Beneficial_Energy829, posting on the Paradox Plaza subreddit, has pulled together some graphs that look at rolling daily peaks of players for Paradox, Civilization, and Total War titles, going back to 2013. Civilization VI may be the most popular individual strategy game, but for a while now Paradox Development Studio games appear to have been the most popular strategy games in that mix. Back 4 Blood system requirements – your gaming PC won’t feel Left 4 Dead Posted: 01 Oct 2021 07:14 AM PDT Turtle Rock Studios' Back 4 Blood is almost here, and it's likely to entice Left 4 Dead fans back to the gaming PC fold. Thankfully, despite being a modern-day successor to Turtle Rock's original horror FPS, Back 4 Blood's system requirements aren't so gruesome. In fact, the game's recommended specs actually bring Nvidia's GTX series doesn't head to an early grave. Back 4 Blood's not-so-wretched recommendations are slightly unconventional, as they include entries we're used to seeing on minimum requirements lists. For starters, Turtle Rock Studios recommends a GTX 970 GPU, a card that first made its debut back in 2014. The game's minimum specs include the more modern, albeit less powerful, 1050 Ti, which mean if you're currently rocking an Nvidia RTX GPU, running Back 4 Blood should be a breeze. Of course, Back 4 Blood's AMD requirements aren't quite as forgiving as Nvidia's, as the game's minimum and required specs both demand Radeon RX series cards. While the RX 570 is on par with the GTX 970, it's significantly newer and tends to go for a lot more on the used market. So, if you're planning on throwing together a cheap rig to play Back 4 Blood, you might want to stick with the green team. Best CPU cooler in 2021 – our picks of the top air and liquid coolers Posted: 01 Oct 2021 08:36 AM PDT Keeping your CPU temperatures low is essential for good gaming performance from your PC, whether that's because you're planning to overclock, or to prevent performance throttling and ensure reliability. That's why we've assembled this guide to buying the best CPU cooler for your system. With the odd exception, the stock CPU cooler that comes with your AMD / Intel processor probably isn't going to cut it, and in any case it's always worth looking to upgrade if your system is struggling to stay cool when put to the test. Water cooling solutions reign supreme when it comes to overclocking because liquid needs much more energy added to it than air to increase its temperature. Still, you can get some pretty respectable speeds with the best air coolers and you won't have to worry about any potential water leaks or the higher cost of an AIO cooling system. If you want to learn more about the best AIO coolers, then head over to our dedicated guide as it can do wonders if you're pondering how to overclock your CPU. Otherwise, stick around to find out the best CPU coolers you can buy, whether you're being mindful of your budget, form factor, or style. This impressive CS:GO fan map brings a Half-Life-like spin to classic Wingman Posted: 01 Oct 2021 04:34 AM PDT A new and impressive-looking Counter-Strike: Global Offensive fan-made map has popped up on the FPS game's Steam Workshop, which takes its classic bomb defusal Wingman game mode and transports it to a futuristic research facility. Set in a research base called Orion, the map looks pretty darn great, and like it would perhaps appeal to fans of another genre giant: Half-Life. Creators KlixX (environment art), Slimek (level design and material creation), and Squidski (3D art and level design help) have posted a new CS:GO map set in the Orion base - the same location as their popular Hostage Wingman map, shared last year - which this time lets you play the classic Wingman mode in the facility. While the maps appear to differ slightly from each other in layout, the description for the latest says it's "set in a remote top secret research facility", and sees the Phoenix faction "trying to sabotage the scientists' work on space exploration", with counter-terrorist agents being sent in to stop them. From the screenshots shared, the map - like its predecessor - looks really impressive. We can see various futuristic-looking hangars, corridors, and other hubs across the space base that look like they'd play host to some intense, close-quarters combat, with each zone seemingly colour-coded to let you know which part of the facility you're in. Intel’s Alder Lake CPU will premiere alongside Lenovo’s upcoming gaming PC Posted: 01 Oct 2021 04:13 AM PDT Back in March, Intel's Rocket Lake line of processors emerged on the scene, armed with the company's new Iris Xe integrated graphics. Yet, despite its freshness, Intel's 12th gen CPU range is already scheduled to release this year, and Lenovo's upcoming Legion 9000K gaming PC will be the first build to wield the Alder Lake chip. That's right, while reports hint that Intel's upcoming Core refresh will be available to preorder from October 27, it'll also premiere alongside Lenovo's prebuilt powerhouse. According to ITHome, the Legion 9000K will also feature DDR5 RAM support and PCIe 5.0 SSD compatibility, meaning the rig could sport an Intel Z690 motherboard. Of course, while both Intel's CPU and Lenovo's build are PCIe 5.0 ready, we'll need to wait for products that actually use the interface to hit the market. Being a gaming PC, the 9000K's advertising boasts an Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti graphics card, which naturally makes the system a compelling option for anyone struggling with the ongoing GPU shortage. The Legion 9000K should also be available from October 29th, so if your current rig needs more than a GPU upgrade, this PC could be a compelling investment. Intel i9-12900K engineering samples are being sold for $700 USD in China Posted: 01 Oct 2021 03:55 AM PDT Less than a month from Intel Innovation, the rumoured official reveal event for Intel's Alder Lake processors, black market vendors in China are reportedly selling numerous Intel Core i9-12900K engineering samples. As revealed by Yuuki_ans in several tweets, The CPUs are selling for an average of ¥4500 CNY (approx. $700 USD / £520 GBP / €600) but the official MSRP of the flagship chip is still unknown. It's important to stress that these engineering samples likely don't reflect the performance of any Alder Lake processor, with minor bugs and typically lower frequencies when compared to final retail units. The chips also play coy with their identities and bear no clear indication of what CPU they are. Instead, they're simply described as 'Intel Confidential'. Suffice to say, we don't recommend most people buy these. However, should these samples find their way into the hands of those equipped with Z690 motherboards then we could see even more productivity and gaming benchmarks of the Core i9-12900K leak out into the wild. New World devs are aiming to launch server transfers next week Posted: 01 Oct 2021 02:32 AM PDT New World, is turns out, is very popular. Amazon Games' fantasy MMORPG launched earlier this week and immediately saw budding adventures diving into Aeternum in their hundreds of thousands, with peaks of over 750k concurrent players - numbers that put it comfortably among Steam's most-played right now. Naturally, that's meant some pretty hefty queues for some players as servers have struggled to keep up, and the devs announced a server transfer opportunity was coming up to help ease congestion soon. Now, it seems that's due to arrive next week. In a Twitter post updating players on this topic (below), the New World devs announce that they've been "working around the clock to add as many servers as we can and will continue to do so until we stabilise wait times". So far, they've "more than doubled" the number of New World servers and are working to dial up capacity on all available worlds get a higher population cap in place. While these efforts are pushing on, the devs encourage new players diving in for the first time to go for one of the 40% of servers with "low or no wait times". While you might be keen to get stuck in with your friends, the New World devs explain that they're "working hard on a feature that will allow you to transfer your characters to a different server", with their goal being to "release this feature next week". The best Dota 2 heroes for beginners Posted: 01 Oct 2021 04:31 AM PDT What are the best Dota 2 heroes for beginners? Getting started in Dota 2 can seem like a bit of a daunting task. 121 heroes staring at you from the pick screen, arranged in all sorts of categories, grimacing at you unattractively. Learning the game is complex enough without having to narrow down your hero choices, so we've done all the hard work for you - we advise picking one of the following. All of the heroes play a very specific role in battle. Some of them can be played in multiple roles, sometimes even within the same game. To do well at Dota 2 it is important to understand what these roles are and how they interact with each other. But it is equally as important to realise that a hero's role should inform how you play them and the items you purchase. If you're finding these basics a touch confusing, don't worry: so did we when we started playing. But now we've learned the strategies behind a great team, we can provide you with advice to help you choose the right character, and understand their position in the five-player team. Destiny 2: what is the Legendary Lost Sector today? Posted: 01 Oct 2021 06:18 AM PDT Are you looking for the Legend or Master Lost Sector locations in Destiny 2? While many Destiny 2 Exotics can be bought from Xûr or even in the world loot pool, the Exotics in these special Lost Sector instances cannot, forcing players to explore these dangerous areas if they want the best equipment available. To make matters worse, you have to complete them on your own to get a chance at the best rewards. Before you can take on Legend Lost Sectors, you need to complete all the normal Lost Sectors first. If you don't, the new Legend Lost Sectors will not appear on the map. There are two quests per day in which the location, modifiers, and rewards rotate out for something new. The location for the Legend Lost Sector quests appear with the daily reset at 5pm UTC. It's important to remember that Exotic drops are not guaranteed after completing these quests, so you may have to run through the same Lost Sector multiple times. You can go through them quests with a fireteam, but your rewards will be reduced to Enhancement Cores only. RELATED LINKS: Destiny 2: Beyond Light review, Destiny 2 exotics, Play Destiny 2 |
Dyson Sphere Program reaches 1.7 million units sold as the devs detail combat Posted: 30 Sep 2021 04:00 PM PDT Dyson Sphere Program proved to be a delightful take on the factory-building genre when it launched earlier this year, and that was reflected in its player counts. Now, the devs have announced that the game has reached 1.7 million copies sold, and provided the first details on what to expect from the upcoming combat system. Combat is still in the early design phase, but will be focused on "defense, exploration, expansion, and extermination". (Looking forward to the '3X and a D' genre becoming a thing.) The devs hope to get "a huge number" of enemies attacking your base, and early bits of concept art show defensive turret structures. There will also be space-bound enemies of various challenge levels spread across the universe. You will get the option to choose your combat difficulty, or turn it off altogether if you want a more peaceful building experience. Combat features are the big focus for the team right now, though they're not expect to launch until the second half of 2022 - in the meantime, the devs say you can still expect regular content updates in other areas. |
RPGolf Legends looks like the Mario Golf game you actually want Posted: 30 Sep 2021 03:23 PM PDT Mario Golf: Super Rush launched earlier this year, and it was… okay. Good, even! But the game's simplistic story mode failed to satisfy fans (like me) pining for the full-on golf RPG games we got back on the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance. Indie game Golf Story scratched the itch, but that's still a Switch exclusive. Thankfully, RPGolf Legends seems poised to fill the void - with a bit more action - on PC. Publisher Kemco debuted the RPGolf Legends trailer during TGS, and it looks like a delightful combination of traditional golf and basically every other mechanic that has appeared in an action-adventure game. There's exploration, crafting, and combat across an open world with six major environments, and the trailer even shows off a fishing minigame - the true mark of greatness. Developer ArticNet previously launched RPGolf on mobile devices and Steam back in 2018, which garnered mixed reviews. Most of the complaints focused on the game's limited features, which Legends certainly seems to be addressing. Here's hoping ArticNet is finding the right formula for the sequel. |
