Why You Should Get Excited About Anise Spirits Posted: 02 Dec 2021 06:34 AM PST Here's our cheat sheet to a formerly forbidding spirit that, in 2021, is easy to drink and easy to understand. The European tradition of serving a herbaceous, botanical-influenced drink before or after a meal (as an aperitif or digestif) has gained ground in America over the past few years thanks to the surge in popularity of amaro, the bittersweet Italian liqueur. For many of us this is a whole new category of beverage, sips that can be lead-ins to wine with dinner or provide a last energy surge for the night.
All My Bookcases Failed Me—Then I Found This IKEA Hack Posted: 02 Dec 2021 05:30 AM PST Like many people, the first bookcase I ever bought was IKEA's Billy bookcase. Affordable and simple to assemble, my Billy lasted for a few years before starting to look worse for wear (and eventually falling apart). When I moved to my current apartment almost seven years ago, I bought a new IKEA bookcase that I thought was my library's soulmate: the 35-inch Hemnes bookcase. It was sturdier than the Billy, made of solid pine instead of particle board, and still very affordable. (I loved Hemnes so much that I even wrote about how great it is!) However, my husband and I are serious book lovers and over the years, even Hemnes didn't hold up to the weight of our collection. I learned that not all solid wood is created equal: Pine is particularly soft, so the peg holes for the shelf supports eventually stretched so that the shelves got wobbly. Then, earlier this year, the bottom rung of our shelf split in two. (Readers: Don't blame IKEA, it's my fault, we crammed those books in and even loaded them up on top.) I ended up propping the whole thing up with... a can of soup. It was time to find a new bookcase, and I swore that I wouldn't buy another IKEA bookcase.
24 of the Coziest Dumpling Recipes, From Pierogi to Gyoza Posted: 01 Dec 2021 02:00 PM PST Lunar New Year is just about here: It's the time for food, family, and traditions. And...dumplings. Because what better way is there to celebrate? Indeed, in Chinese culture, jiaozi, or steamed dumplings, are typically folded and eaten on New Year's Eve; they're said to symbolize luck and prosperity for the year ahead. They also symbolize deliciousness. I, myself, am an equal-opportunity dumpling eater, year-round. But for some reason, making dumplings at home has never really occurred to me, but it's actually the perfect weekend project. It's a time investment, sure, but so are those sweet rolls I made this past spring, and that homemade whole-wheat tagliatelle. And there's a huge upside: At home, I can put just about whatever I want in them, steam or fry them exactly to my preference, and freeze them for whenever a dumpling craving hits (they'll probably run out soon). Best of all, dumpling-pleating seems like possibly the most therapeutic kitchen task imaginable, and I could always use a little chill.
27 Last-Minute Gifts That That Look Nothing Like Last-Minute Posted: 01 Dec 2021 02:00 PM PST While I'd like to think that I work better under pressure, there are times when procrastinating is just plain stressful—like holiday gifting. There's nothing worse than finding an amazing, thoughtful, unique gift just to dilly-dally on buying it and ultimately finding it's out of stock or the delivery date is mid-January. The backup plan is usually some generic gift card or a hand drawn IOU that I try to pass off as a joke. This can't possibly be a just-me thing, so even though there are still a few weeks before you see family and friends for gift exchanges, we've got 27 last-minute gifts that are personal, thoughtful, and most importantly, will arrive in time. From subscription boxes to e-gift cards to tech that ships really fast, these 27 last-minute gifts won't make you look like the procrastinator that you really are (don't worry, we won't tell).
14 No-Fail Gifts That Work Every Time, According to Resident Hana Asbrink Posted: 01 Dec 2021 12:17 PM PST If there's one thing I'm good at that isn't kitchen-related, it's buying gifts. There's nothing more gratifying than giving someone the most thoughtful gift, which from my experience, marries style, utility, and a touch of "wow-I-didn't-realize-I-needed-that" whimsy. The following gift ideas are a trusted assortment of beloved items that I own and are so good that I've already gifted them to my loved ones (or in the case of some, let people borrow and never saw them again).
9 Gift Ideas for the Meal-Prepping Pro in Your Life Posted: 01 Dec 2021 10:35 AM PST We've teamed up with Blue Apron to share smart tips, cooking inspiration, and gift ideas to get you through the holidays. A delicious idea: Give the gift of Blue Apron's top-rated meal kits so your friends and family can get cooking this winter and beyond. I've always wanted to be the type of person who meal preps on a regular basis—batch-cooking grains and vegetables to mix and match throughout the week, freezing soups and casseroles for a heat-and-eat dinner, you get the picture. Though I may not have achieved meal prep superstar status yet, there are people on my holiday shopping list this year who definitely have, and maybe you know some, too.
13 Holiday Classics Turned Into Cookies Posted: 01 Dec 2021 07:00 AM PST If you look forward to winter holiday desserts all year long, you're not alone. I have sudden cravings for a cold glass of coquito in April, and sometimes think about a croquembouche festooned with drips of caramel in July. Now that it's finally December, it's time to dig into all those great seasonal goodies. But this year, we have a bit of a twist: Cookies Meet Classics, a baker's dozen of your favorite holiday sweets as cookies. We called up some of our favorite bakers, creators, recipe developers, and cookbook authors to shrink a banquet table of winter treats into a mailable cookie box. In other words, we cookie-fied the classics. That means that you can have the flavors of mulled wine in a two-bite snack, and a perfectly portioned Yule Log for one. These treats are ideal for sharing and dropping off at doorsteps, or just making into a festive platter for yourself. And if you have to dig out the recipes again in June, well, I'm not about to tattle on you.
How to Keep Your Pets from Destroying the Christmas Tree Posted: 01 Dec 2021 05:30 AM PST The last time I was on TikTok—a land of many treasures—I came across a trend where people chase their cats around with the Christmas tree before putting it up. The idea is that the cat will be scared of the tree and stay away from it. It's kind of mean, but cats can be total Grinches, so I get it. However, I'm not one to chase my four-legged kiddos around with a giant tree, so I'll do almost everything else to keep them from destroying the holidays. If you have a cat or dog (or, like me, multiples of each), you're probably all too familiar with the precarious dynamic between pets and Christmas trees. Cats love to climb them (A tree! Inside! How fun!) and use them for parkour stunts while dogs love to rustle around underneath and frequently view ornaments as toys. Needless to say, none of these antics are particularly safe, which is why many pet parents look for ways to keep their furry friends away from the tree during the holiday season—a task easier said than done.
